Chairman’s Newsletter – March 2020

Posted on March 16th, 2020

Hello everyone

Normally, this Newsletter would be looking forward to the start of the full spring and summer programme, with a particular focus on the Tuesday evening programme. Sadly, this is not a normal year. We had a committee meeting earlier this evening and of course this came shortly after the UK Government’s dramatic announcements about the latest steps in tackling the COVID-19 virus. To be honest, we are not sure what to do right now. On the one hand there is clear direction to avoid gatherings, social activity and non-essential travel. On the other hand, those isolated are encouraged to leave the house for exercise as long as they are a safe distance from others. Many local clubs have already cancelled all their rides until further notice. It is also very sobering to note that in recent days both Spain and Italy have banned all recreational cycling.

As most of you will know, we are a local member group of the national organisation Cycling UK. We have therefore decided to take advice from their national team before deciding what to do. It has to be said that the signs are not good, but we want to take appropriate advice before a final decision on the upcoming season.

Therefore we undertake to let you all know what the plans are for the coming season by Thursday this week at the latest.

Best regards
John
