Regular Sunday Ride [from Grove] | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a re-run of the 3* I led last year for the 90th Anniversary of the Oxford DA, this time – unfortunately - without afternoon tea at Standlake. Note that the ride starts at Grove. We will take a northerly direction through Buckland, Aston, Crawley, Stonesfield, Ditchley Park, Spelsbury, and a lunch stop at The Bull in Charlbury @ 60km [www.bullinn-charlbury.com]. After lunch, we will head south through Fawler, North Leigh, Witney, Stanton Harcourt, Standlake, Longworth and West Hanney. Total distance = 106km. No major hills, although the road rolls quite a lot around Charlbury – total climb = 710m. We’ll be riding at “Sunday touring pace” – approx. 20kph average. Please let me know if you intend to ride by 16 September so that I can book lunch. |

Speeds matched: we were often bowling along in the high 20s on the flatter sections. The weather was decided autumnal - cool with mist and overcast skies for much of the ride relieved by a couple of hours of sunshine around lunchtime. The Bull Inn couldn’t cater for the whole group, so some volunteers made do with sandwiches from the Co-Op while the rest of us dined in style. I must re-think the lunch venue when we do this ride again, and try and work-out a coffee stop mid-morning! There was a minor touch of wheels whilst negotiating the outskirts of Witney, resulting in Richard and Adrian essaying an interesting pas-de-deux which, unfortunately, no one caught on film. No serious damage and we all made it home safe in time for rugby and Grand Prix watching. Good ride and thank you all for your company. | ||

Kudos to Adrian for a) providing a very soft landing, b) supreme bike handling skills in not crashing himself when suddenly faced with carrying a passenger, and c) for being such a gentleman about having a plonker crash into the back of him! |
