Regular Wantage Ride - the Oxford Special Series 2*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
PLEASE NOTE: to try to assess catering, could anyone planning to join this ride contact me to confirm? I don't need a 100% commitment, just wanting to get a feel for it.

NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove.

A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, 2* pace, but a long day with a total distance of around 90km / 57 miles.

We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington, past the house with a shark in the roof, down Headington Hill, right into the heart of Oxford for some classic sightseeing moments (I am a College Bursar - I can give you the inside stories). Then we head north for a great lunch stop at the Plough pub in Wolvercote, before some lovely scenery around Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor, followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield and Charney Bassett.

Easy riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph).

Report:
A wonderful day for a bike ride, and a good group gathered. A particular welcome to Eusebio, recently arrived in the UK with his wife and keen to join us from a very strong cycling background back in Spain.

We made good time in the first 20 miles or so and decided to treat ourselves to a bonus extra coffee stop at Nutcotts Garden Centre. Having worked our way to the Baldons immediately after that, we were startled by a very big explosion. At first everyone thought it was a gunshot, until Des pointed us to his rear tyre blown off the rim by a disintegrated inner tube. A definite candidate for "puncture of the year". Fortunately it hadn't damaged the tyre and it was quickly fixed. The climb of Garsington Hill was despatched easily enough, but a combination of recent rain and a lack of time prompted a change of route so that we dropped down into Horspath rather than Wheatley and left the Headington Shark experience for another time. Having sailed down into the centre of Oxford, we resisted the temptations of the Broad Street Beer Festival and headed north for lunch at the Plough in Wolvercote. They were busy and the food was slow coming out, but we enjoyed sitting in the sun and 'helping' Eusebio with English phrases. Port Meadow was lovely, Cumnor Hill was not too bad and we headed for home via Appleton, Hinton Waldrist and Pusey.

A great day out, thanks to a really fun group.
