Daytime Thursday Special - Family Ride 1*
Leader:
Stephanie Haddrell
Start Time:
10:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
This week we are offering youngsters an easy taster ride around the local villages, to promote cycling among students, build their confidence and encourage them to enjoy safe cycling in their free time. The ride will be approximately 9 miles long around quiet country lanes. There will be experienced riders on hand to offer support and deal with any mechanical issues.

Please arrive at the start (Old Mill Hall car park in Grove, OX12 7LB) by 10.15 am for registration. This is a free experience but as with all our rides, children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and older children require informed parental consent. We ask all newcomers to complete a Guest Consent form which can be found under the resources section of the website: here. If you could bring along completed forms (signed by parents) that would speed matters along although there will be hard copies available for completion on the day.

To register an interest or for further information please contact Steph (mobile no. above or email info@cyclingukwantage.org.uk).

Report:
It was a real pleasure to welcome 6 youngsters aged between 4 and 11 on this Family holiday ride, which considerably reduced the average age of the group! We split into two groups for safety and thanks must go to regular one star riders Di, Des and Roger for supporting the ride and acting as secondary leaders and sweeps.
The first group of the Legate family led by Steph, with Rachel and Natasha setting the pace, and Di sweeping headed out along Brereton drive and on to Denchworth. Roger led the second group, who followed with the remaining 1*riders, and included youngsters Owen and Lewis who by now were becoming regulars, and cruised out! We all stopped outside the Fox in Denchworth to take stock and admire the memorial to be found on the pub wall. Our youngest rider Chloe aged 5 had hitched a lift with Dad Steve to climb the railway bridge, and took this opportunity to break free, and rode on independently. On our way to Goosey we were blessed with glorious sunshine; and once there we stopped on the village Green where Cath and Laura provided some welcome sustenance for the youngsters, (and some of the adults!). Having replenished our energy stores we were ready for the off, and headed back towards Charney Bassett and onto the Denchworth road. At this point we offered some of the youngsters the opportunity to return to Grove at a slightly faster pace, and Owen Lewis, Rachel and Natasha jumped at the chance to do so. Led by Roger with Des sweeping the speedy group made their way to the cornerstone cafe where we had agreed to meet for some well earned refreshments! Chloe set the pace for the second group, which included Dad Steve, Mum Laura with little brother Matthew in his seat, (his challenge was to stay awake...which he did!) , Steph Lizzie, and Di. Chloe maintained a really steady pace, declined a lift over the bridge, and in fact chased a rabbit up the bridge! It was lovely to end the ride at the cornerstone cafe where we enjoyed coffee and cake or lunch, and it was a real pleasure to see that the youngsters finished their 9 mile ride with smiles on their faces! Thank you to all 1* riders for supporting this initiative.
