Isle Of Wight Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:7:45 am |
Start Location:Lymington Pier |
Description:THIS RIDE IS NOW FULL. PLEASE CONTACT ME IF YOU WISH TO GO ON A WAITING LISTAfter a break of a couple of years, the IoW club special returns - with changes! Although this is over a 110km riding with just shy of 1300m of climbing, done at the right pace, this is an accessible ride for anyone with underlying fitness, that takes in the best of the Isle of Wight. Glorious views, swooping hills and a ferry ride at Cowes (1 pound), what more could you ask for We will catch the 08:15 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (19.40 pounds for adults and 14.40 pounds for 60+) tickets can be bought online in advance or at the ticket office before sailing. Bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 40 minutes. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (9 pounds for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines or alternatively you can use Ringgo to pay for your ticket, see here: http://www.wightlink.co.uk/go/isle-of-wight-ferry-routes-destinations/lymington-yarmouth-ferry/. You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding, even if you have bought your ticket in advance (which is advised). Boarding commences 15 minutes before sailing. We will car share as much as possible. There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes, toast) but there is a café at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast! Depending on the wishes of the group, there will be an option to visit the Needles not long after we disembark in Yarmouth. Our previous lunch stop in Bembridge has gone up-market and instead we will take the opportunity to check out the Red Squirrel Trail from Shanklin to Wroxall and stop for lunch in Sandown at just under half way. We'll aim to stop for an afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes dependant on the time. Return ferry will either be the 16:05, 17:05 or 18:05 from Yarmouth. |

The views were astounding, particularly from the Needles which we returned to after many years. All agreed this needed to be part of future routes. We discovered a National Trust mobile catering van far too early but all enjoyed the treats. The small lanes continued to delight as in previous years. WE diverted to Godshill for food and discovered a delightful vegan restaurant tucked away that was excellent value and nobody complained at the lack of meatThe addition of riding the Esplanade between Shanklin and Sandown was fab on such a hot, sunny day (note for next years briefing: don't be tempted to cycle on any sand!). The changes to the route after Bembridge were nice but definitely not as nice as in previous years so if we visit the IoW next year, won't be included. The heat, sun and unrelenting hills took their toll and extended our day accordingly and we glimpsed a departing ferry as we approached the port. However the wait for the next one allowed at least one member of the group to run (in cleats) for a magnum before the shop shut . Thanks Andy for a fantastic job of sweeping and to everyone for being so good natured All in all a great day out! | ||
