3* Saturday Half Day Ride - Oxford Special | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).This uses the route of last year's May Day ride to give us a great entrance into Oxford. We head out to Fyfield, under the Tubney tunnel and across to Sunningwell before joining the river by Kennington for a lovely route into town past the College boathouses with views across Christ Church Meadow. Then we will take a look at some of the best buildings Oxford has to offer (including my own St Cross College) before heading out of town again to Wolvercote for a big loop around Port Meadow. Finally we conquer Cumnor Hill and head for home. There will be a coffee stop somewhere in the mix! It is just over 40 miles and we should be back in Grove by around 1pm. |

However, we set off in good spirits and made good time to Tubney, at which point we suffered a slow puncture on a tubeless tyre which got rather complicated... To cut a long story short, we had a very nice coffee at the Proof Social Bakehouse at Sandford:https://www.proofbakehouse.com and then another rider decided to head for home as the cold was getting to them. Fair point - the northerly wind was rather brutal. A 50% attrition rate might be considered a bit excessive, but the remaining four soldiered on and fortunately it all went according to plan from there. We enjoyed the Sustrans path from Kennington down to the river, the towpath to Folly Bridge, a glimpse of some 11th century stonework, the glories of central Oxford, another improved path alongside the Oxford canal, Port Meadow and Cumnor Hill with a rare tailwind before taking full advantage of the same tailwind to race home. Thanks to all for taking part in one way or another! | ||
