3* Isle of Wight Special 3*
Leader:
Katherine Boyce
Start Time:
8:00 am
Start Location:
Southampton
Description:
THE RIDE IS NOW FULL. Please contact me if you want to go on a waiting list in case anyone drops out.

The annual IoW club special.

This year we have a few deviations from the traditional route round the island. including starting from East Cowes using the 8am ferry from Southampton. As ever it is quite a tough route being approx. 105k with lots of ups and downs, (approx. 1,200m of climbing in total).

Parking: https://www.southampton.gov.uk/travel-transport/find-and-plan/find-parking/cruise-parking/

I have been advised that the best parking is Eastgate Street Multi-storey, Southampton, SO14 3HB, UK, and is a maximum of £9 a day. It is a short ride to Terminal 1. Please be there at least three quarters of an hour before to allow time to park, assemble, get to the terminal and board. I would strongly suggest you book your tickets via https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/faqs#booking as soon as possible (£23 return in advance), once you have checked there is a place on the ride. When you book you have to include a return ferry time. Please select 17.30 - albeit that it is usually possible to change this which will give us some flexibility.

Most past participants have chosen to have breakfast on the ferry (or bring your own) and this makes sense as the plan is not to have a formal cafe stop until a mid morning type stop in Freshwater. The new starting point puts the Bembridge cafe lunch will be at Newchurch (72k). We are hoping to identify a replacement for an ice cream at the beach in Cowes near the return ferry point but can’t guarantee it I’m afraid.

Please let me know if you intend to join. The ride has filled up quickly in prior years. For safety the ride will be limited in numbers to around 12 riders at the ride leaders discretion after assessing forecast etc.

Report:
Change of start to Cowes, allowed for changes to the previous route. The successful changes were to use the cycle path from Yarmouth to Freshwater and picking up part of the Squirrel Line at Newchurch to allow access to the rather splendid Pedallers Cafe. Also successful was splitting into 2 groups and keeping about 5 minutes between us. Interesting was Katherine taking her group across the Causeway at Bembridge! Once again the Round the Island route at Ryde was narrow and uncomfortably busy. Definitely one to avoid next year.

All-in-all a very successful trip: thanks to Sharon for leading the first group and everyone for being such a great group to be out with for the day :) :) :)
