Tuesday Evening 1* Ride - Change of route | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:HEATWAVE UPDATE 18 July - due to the hot temperatures forecast through to Tuesday evening, I propose a change of route to reduce the amount of climbing and distance (if we so choose). Instead of riding out to the Letcombes, we can head to Childrey via Denchworth and the metalled bridleway from West Challow. We can then decide on returning via either Goosey or Wantage. Please bring plenty to drink. Please let me know if you would still like to ride.A ride out to the Letcombes this evening with a few ups and downs and the hardest hill we do on 1* on a Tuesday Evening - Holborn Hill on the west side of Letcombe Bassett. Once we've caught our breath and enjoyed the view at the top, we can enjoy a lovely descent to Childrey and then more gently all the way down to Challow Station. After a short stretch of the A417, we return to Grove via Goosey and Denchworth a round trip of about 14 miles. This is a bridging ride at the upper end of 1* for those who would like to try an easier 2* ride next week. Please let me know by text if you are thinking of coming. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Report:What started as a ride in sticky heat under overcast skies turned into a much more pleasant affair as a cold front moving through brought a refreshing southerly breeze, a nice drop in temperature and patchy sunshine.Despite the lingering heat of the hottest day of the year, 5 of us were up for a ride, and lovely to be joined by Mila as we left the car park. I had already changed the route to reduce the amount of climbing but a further change was required when a passing motorist informed us of an accident at the Circourt Road-A417 junction. We had stopped at the top of the railway bridge to admire the view and were looking back at the dark skies further east. Were those a few rain drops? The decision was taken to partially retrace our steps to Goosey and then make a loop around the Vale. At Goosey, we headed over to the church in the corner of the green and were delighted to find the door open. The lady cleaning was very happy for us to come in to the cool and look around. Later as we approached Charney Bassett, the wind picked up and rain started to fall. After the briefest of showers, the sun came out and we could see a faint rainbow. From Lyford back to Denchworth the cooling breeze was in our faces making for harder work, but in very pleasant evening sunshine. Back in Grove at 8:15pm, we were all pleased to have ventured out. Thanks to all for your company. | ||

Report:A lovely evening although still rather hot for the planned route. We headed out to the Letcombes as planned, taking our time at a rather more sedate 2 star pace. There were several options to shorten the ride and we all felt that to do the full planned route would be too much. At Childrey we reviewed the situation and decided that the flat route back to Denchworth via Goosey woudl be a good option with a stop for rehydration at the Fox. A lovely evening with great company! | ||

The road surface between Denchworth & Hatford was starting to melt which made things a little difficult at times. Once we had crossed over the A417 at Shellingford the road surface was much better & the humidity vanished leaving us with a cooler head wind for our return leg home. A nice group to lead! Many thanks to Andy for sweeping. | ||
