Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:Adrian West |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. This month we will ride out to Filkins for our tea stop at the Cotswold Woolen Weavers. The ride will be a little longer than usual at just under 60km but fairly flat with only one notable climb. This will give 2* riders a taste of touring without having to dive straight into 3* 100km+ rides. (which are great btw) We will head out from OMH to Filkins via some rarely used roads so hopefully some new scenery and a welcome change for regular riders. A good afternoons cycle touring at a 2* riding pace so expect to be back at Grove late in the afternoon. Come along it will be fun and the cream teas at Filkins are to die for UPDATE: I have contacted the tea stop and they are glad to have us visit. Out of courtesy I said around a dozen or so may be visiting. There is plenty of safe bike parking for us. |

A lovely warm afternoon with scattered sunshine encouraged a lot of the riders to attend, along with a good route and promise of an awesome tea stop. Due to the number of riders we split the group into two with group 1 being led by myself and group 2 led by our Chairman JT. An interesting route via Park Lane, Stanford, Hatford (where group 2 had a minor detour), up the rarely ridden Sandy Lane, Littleworth and a beautiful descent to Thrupp. I think this is where we lost David T in group 2 to a broken spoke according to the flyby. Thereafter both groups continued through pretty Cotswold Villages to our Tea Stop at Filkins where Brian left us and headed home. As soon as we parked the bikes and eagerly entered the tea shop it was evident that the poor lady working there hadn't been informed of our visit by the boss who I contacted previously. Unfortunately this meant that there was a shortage of cake and cream teas and a few people had to wait quite a while to get served. Over an hour later and an apology from the boss's wife we continued on our journey. Chris and Phil left the ride and made a hasty journey home due to needing to be back for family etc. and the rest of us carried on to Bampton past some Morris Dancers and then up the hill to Buckland. We continued on the well worn path through Charney, dropping various riders as they departed for home, through Denchworth back to OMH. A fantastic afternoon out with fantastic company. We must do it again sometime Please see the cool Monty Python esq Strava animated Flyby: http://goo.gl/SBKyQk | ||
