Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove 2*
John Tranter
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:

UPDATE 9.30 SATURDAY MORNING: weather looking slightly weird, but the ride will go ahead regardless!

There was exceptionally good feedback from my recent ride into the centre of Oxford, so I thought I'd try another variant. Simple routing across the north Vale to Cumnor, down Cumnor Hill (all the way this time!) and then it gets cunning as we sneak along the tracks over the A34 junction and enjoy the old road up to Godstow and around the top of Port Meadow. We pop through the village of Wolvercote, down the Woodstock Road, through the back streets of Jericho and enjoy another VIP tea stop at St Cross College (being the Bursar brings certain benefits...). We head out of town south to the river bank and follow my cunning route west back to Cumnor. Then we track back through Tubney and Fyfield.

This will be run at 2* pace and will be a fairly long ride because of the intricacies of the city centre routing. Expect to be back in Grove 5.30-6pm.
Distinctly dodgy weather. Thunder rolled around as we set off and some had driven through flash floods to get to the start. But - how amazing that so many had made the effort!

The first half was all good - the rain held off and we enjoyed the swoop down Cumnor Hill and the nice loop around Port Meadow and down into Jericho.

As we arrived at St Cross College the sky began to darken rather dramatically. Fortunately we were just about indoors with cake and coffee purchased before the downpour really began. After waiting for a while, we decided to tough it out and set off again regardless. The riverside tracks were fun and the climb of Cumnor Hill was managed well. But, my goodness, the rain was pretty unrelenting by then! We had a fairly spectacularly damp return ride, but everyone was in good spirits as we got back to Grove.

Thanks to all for good company and stoic endurance!

Many thanks also to Steve for heroic sweeping with a big group.
