Tuesday Evening 4* Ride | 4* |
---|
Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. Right folks, I've booked warm dry weather (actually there is now a realistic chance of sporadic thunderstorms, so come prepared please!) for a series of loops heading West, with 3 climbs separated by a good deal of rouleur territory. Woolstone #1 will check the little ring is accessible. The most Westerly loop is started by a challenging descent into Compton Beauchamp - CARE: holes, gravel and adverse camber make for a heady mixture. Woolstone #2 leading straight onto Dragon Hill (reverse) is the main event. We will stop at the very top around the corner & past the cattle grid to gather breath, regard the awesome view and consider the next cattle grid & Give Way at the foot of the hill where YOU MUST STOP. A cheeky diversion down to Uffington opens up the Westerly approach climb to Fawler/Kingston Lisle, from where we regain Baulking Lane and in the calm of the evening take the A417 right into Wantage & thence Grove. |

Riders:Andy CowanFrank Schroer Jason Jones Nick Fisher Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:7 starters, quickly augmented by Frank (completing his warm up?) made a train of 8 keen to head out West. Park Lane was enlivened by an oncoming tractor, but no great drama. As Uffington flew by the anticipation of climbing was palpable & as we approached Woolstone for the first time, the greyhounds were unleashed. A flatlanders loop from Compton Beauchamp up to the Longcot Road was enjoyed, passing through tree tunnels in the cooling evening sunlight. Back to the grindstone, we tackled Woolstone again leading straight on to Dragon reversed. I have been reliably informed by the grimpeurs that Nick was first to the top, powering up a gritty and dampened road, suggesting local showers had passed by recently. Mist & low cloud were illuminated by oblique sunlight over the Vale - quite a sight. The descent safely negotiated, we settled into a useful clip again & rattled off the Fawler climb before regaining the Baulking Road. The late evening selection of A417 straight into Wantage providing a rapid and pleasing end to a really great evening. My thanks to all the group for making it such fun, a good workout with no issues at all - ride leader paradise, cheers chaps | ||
