Tuesday 4* Evening Ride 4*
Leader:
Phil Ward
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at an average riding pace of ~25km/h (16mph). May be hilly.

This is a bridging ride at the LOWER level of the range to encourage riders who feel ready to move up to the next star level.

Donovan's "Mello Yellow" (1967) is an inspiration for this ride. C'mon and feel the 4* breeze folks - but not too much of it as you'll be tucked in nicely, following a wheel won't you? Actually, as the song says "Born high forever to fly, Wind velocity nil" we might even get dreamy evening float conditions, we'll see ?

We're heading East towards the Power Station (hat tip to Robert Palmer) on a shorter 44km loop. Lumps and bumps predominantly in the first half, on at times narrow and gravel-strewn lanes, opening out to delicious smooth tarmac around Milton Park in a rare urban dalliance. The final section is a flat run-in to build the tension culminating with the Denchworth Dash to give the full 4* experience :D.
At a relaxed average speed of ~25kph (range 16-40kph) it should take us to around 8:15pm to get round, well before dusk.
Lights and spares are de rigueur, appropriate clothing/drinks etc for the day is up to you - I'm not your Mum (doh) !!
Come expecting some closer formation/group riding (its both efficient & collegial), concentration, clear "hazard calling" and a good workout. We chat too, but only when all the other bases are covered ;-)

Any queries please do get in touch, we don't bite, honest!

Report:
We welcomed Sian Mitchell (yet another of the enthusiastic Hendred Posse) to the 4* fold and headed out in cool, grey but dry conditions. Early climbing up past Lains Barn showed the group to be all feeling up for giving it a bit of a tickle, so we pushed on to negotiate challenging lanes-surfaces en route to Ginge. Marginally smoother tarmac on the A417 was met with a pacy run to Rowstock and the jiggle to take in Harwell Village. Didcot marked our Eastern limit and we turned to begin the push for home through Milton Park, surviving some erratic motorists and recrossing the A34 to knock off the final climb up above Steventon. The Hanney Road and a lanes detour via Lyford brought us rattling towards Denchworth and the much anticipated Dash, which appeared to be keenly contested although I was by this time well out of position to pronounce a victor. A 5 minute advance on our predicted Grove return suggested a solid (<2 min stationary time), but oftentimes conversational pace had been maintained throughout the cooling evening, tick box :-)
Well done all on completing a route through what at times resembled minefields or a moonscape without any mechanicals or mishaps. Persistent & clear hazard calling helped enormously, thanks.
Roll on Summer eh ?
