Oxford Special - 2* Saturday Half Day Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Note the 9.00 start to beat the traffic. Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). A route I haven't used for a few years, but one of the most fascinating and cunning ways to get into the centre of Oxford almost entirely on off-road tracks. We head across the Vale for Appleton and Cumnor, down Cumnor Hill before hitting the back roads and trails to get us to the river by Osney. A lovely river crossing before we hit the centre of town. Coffee stop with the opportunity to see inside my old College, St Cross. Then we head north out of town on the canal towpath to Wolvercote, loop around Port Meadow and head for home. I'm excited about bringing this one back. 41 miles / 65km at a nice steady 2* pace. |

I had postponed this from Saturday due to torrential rain, and in the end it enabled more people to join the ride so a big win all round. It was a nice mixed up group, with some regular 2* and some regular 3* riders. We had a good tailwind over to Oxford and then we explored the back tracks of west Oxford and the river before popping up in the centre of town. Greens cafe provided excellent coffee and cakes which we enjoyed in the quiet Blackwell Quad of St Cross College. Then we headed north on the Oxford Canal to Wolvercote and Port Meadow before conquering Cumnor Hill and heading for home. Thanks to all for a really fun morning! | ||

Thanks for the great ride John and the added commentary on the archaeology, historical and geographical features of Oxford. Tim. |
