Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. A fairly standard loop around the vale taking in Denchworth, Stanford, Southmoor, Hanneys, Steventon, Hendreds and Lockinge. There are 2 off-road sections: the bridleway over the A420 at Southmoor and the NCN Route 544 from East Hendred to Lockinge. Both are decent surfaces and perfectly rideable on road tyres. This is a 50 km ride with no significant hills, but some gentle inclines. We'll stop for tea about 3/4 of the way round at Q Gardens. |

Riders:Adrian WestBarry Stanton David Bridge Des Higgs Jo Little John Groves Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Karen Townsin Karl Blake Paul Penfold Steve Boreham Val Smith Riders = 13 Weather:Report:11 riders suitably dressed in short sleeves and sunglasses gathered on this beautiful September afternoon - the Summer's not done yet!We met Adrian and Des and with numbers swelled we made quick progress North to Hinton Waldrist and crossed the A420 again to Southmoor. We now faced the headwind, though the superb new road surface on the Hanney Road made the ride to West Hanney, where the Michlemass fair was in full swing, a little easier . The fact that the traffic lights were out at the top of the rise out of Steventon should have been a clue; we arrived at Q Gardens to find all power out and only cold drinks available - there were still cakes though. After a slightly chaotic stop we headed down Featherbed Lane, through the Hendreds, Ginges and enjoyed the descent past Laines Barn. With Val's help, and only one wrong turn, we negotiated the roads and avenues of Grove and arrived back at OMH just after 4:30. Thanks everyone for a very enjoyable ride. | ||
