Tuesday evening 1* Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:After the faster and hillier ride last week, a more gentle and flatter offering this Tuesday (and fingers crossed for warmer weather!).A tour of the village greens: visiting West Hanney, Lyford and Charney Bassett, out-and back through Denchworth. A round trip of 12 miles.Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
||
Report:Our 1* regulars are a hardly bunch and despite a heavy shower at 6pm and leaden skies, there were four of us for this evening's 1*. There were a few spots of rain as we made our way to Denchworth, but nothing much. We continued sedately to West Hanney and enjoyed a relaxed chat on the green before riding on to Lyford. Here we stopped by the small patch of green before reaching the church. Martyn spotted a barn owl in the adjoining field and we watched transfixed for the next 10 minutes or so while the owl swooped back and forth across the top of the long grass hunting. On several occasions it reared up as if to swoop and twice it did. The second "kill" was close to the road to Charney and we cycled round in the hope of seeing the owl from there. By then, however, it was gone.We continued on to Charney Bassett and green #3, where we saw a family of swallows wheeling overhead. By this stage time was getting on and, deciding to leave Goosey green for another day, headed straight back to Grove. And none too soon; light rain started to fall as we left Denchworth. I got home just before the main shower broke. Thanks all for a memorable ride and to Martyn for the self-timer selfie. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. ***LOWER BRIDGING RIDE***This is the first of our Bridging Ride series designed to help those who would like to progress to the next level of cycling. As such it will be ridden at the lower end of the pace range. Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. We'll head East on a familiar route through Lockinge to East Hendred, then onto Featherbead Lane, Steventon and back to Grove via Hanney and Denchworth. There is a small amount of gravel track which is easily accomplished, even on my 23mm tyres. Please bring lights. |

Report:Well despite the ropey forecast, it was great cycling weather. In fact we all had to stop in West Ginge to take off waterproofs because we were roasting.A lovely ride with strong riders, so the average pace stayed within 2* limits, rather than set at the lower end. Thanks everyone | ||

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Riders:Chris GrayJason Jones Robin Tucker Riders = 3 Report:Despite rain and no Davids, 3 of us still turned out this evening and we clocked a fair distance. We set out via Crab Hill just in case Mike was waiting by The Nelson (nope) then up Lark Hill and Bitham, down to Lands End and straight back up the Ridge.Then across to Harwell and through the woods by the campus. We were going to add a bit more on, but the rain felt like it was starting again, so we headed back on the NCN, Jason peeling off in Wantage and Chris and I heading back over Crab Hill to Grove. | ||

Riders:Clare HazellDavid Jackson David Talboys Eddie Little James Bosley Jane John Jo Little Joy Arthur Julie Haynes Kirsten Smith Nicole Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Stephanie Haddrell Susie Turnbull Yvonne Bird Riders = 16 Weather:Report:Despite a weather report that predicted possible rain and thunderstorms there were 16 of us who were willing to risk it. We split into two groups, but kept close together - which proved very sensible in the circumstances. The ride began well with warm, dry weather and a sighting of 4 deer at the base of Dragon Hill.Unfortunately Kirsten caught her wheel in a rut under a railway bridge between Uffington and Longcot. As she came down she also brought down David J and Dave T. Both KIrsten and David were looking as though they had potentially broken bones so an ambulance was called but, after an hour, it had not been dispatched so other ways were found of dealing with the situation. I now need to thank many people: Joy for her first aid at the scene NIcole and Roger P for their traffic calming/control Susie for leading the rest of the ride back to Grove John and Carin Tranter for coming to collect some bikes Kirsten, David and Dave for being so brave and not making a fuss about their pain or the cold and damp conditions or the non-appearance of the ambulance. Steph for lending me her jacket Eddie for all his phone calls to the ambulance and to JT Finally, and especially, Roger P and his wife Juliet for taking Kirsten to Swindon hospital. As people may know, Kirsten has a badly displaced shoulder joint and severe bruising, but was able to attend her graduation on Wednesday. David has a broken scaphoid and lots of bruising. Dave T was being very tough and wouldn't admit to more than a sore back. Thankfully we have come off more lightly than it seemed at one time. Sorry for the long report but I just wish to finish by thanking everyone for their support and teamwork both throughout the whole evening and since. | ||

Report:I was hoping the weather would make up it`s mind and pour down this afternoon and we wouldn`t have to endure the forecast showers but as it turned out it was very pleasant,warm,no wind and the roads were fine.Only Chris took up the offer of the Bridging ride and the three of us basically had a nice easy going chilled chat around the lanes.Nice. | ||
