Tuesday evening 1* Ride 1*
Leader:
Martyn Wigmore
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.
Denchworth, Challow Marsh, West Challow, Childrey and then back to Wantage along the bridleway as the sun sets before dropping back to Grove.

Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

This may well be a first, a Tuesday 2* ascent of Gramps Hill. After seeing it hyped as an iconic climb in the pre-publicity for the Gravel Cat Adventure Event on YouTube, I thought we should check it out... Short and steep, but at max gradient of 1 in 7 it doesn't warrant an arrow on the OS map, unlike the more familiar icons of White Horse Hill and Blowingstone, or even neighbouring Castle Hill on which we will descend (a great straight on-road descent).

To add to the mix, there are several stretches of non-technical bridleway including the metalled track from West Challow to Childrey, a short stretch along the Ridgeway, the NCN544 track to Lockinge and the rougher track from West Lockinge to Ardington.

Gravel bikes not required but low gears or Shanks pony. We'll take our time on the climb and enjoy the views from the top.

All subject to better weather of course and that the off-road sections have dried out.... If not there are more gentle alternatives.

Tuesday Evening Off Road Ride 2*
Leader:
David Yearley
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather.

We'll go out through Charney Bassett and cross over the A420 before going down Buckland Hill and along Great Brook. Then through Standlake and crossing back over the A420 via the bridge at Southmoor before back through West Hanney and Denchworth to Grove.
This is a flat ride and so will be ridden at the top end of 3* pace. The evenings are getting darker so lights are advisable.

Weather:
sunnywindy (fine)
Report:
A large group of riders tonight, so we split it into two groups and set off on a sunny and warm evening, though with a very strong headwind.
I had promised a fast ride and did my best to provide one. The route was flat and we enjoyed going in a different direction for a Tuesday evening - through Charney, over the A420 and then down Buckland Hill before going along the Great Brook, round the villages and then back towards West Hanney and Grove.
Thank you for being such a good group of riders and thank you to Eddie for being second leader and to Jane and Yvonne for sweeping.

Report:
We were having a good ride, relaying nicely, keeping nice and tight and generally enjoying ourselves when we experienced the most reckless driving I`ve witnessed on a bike, enough said but a clear reminder why I don`t encourage my kids out on the roads.
Other than that a success, relatively lumpy, reasonably quick but well within everyone`s range with decent weather thrown in.
Thanks all
