The Ramsbury Rampage! | 3* |
---|
Leader:David Smith |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Well maybe not quite a rampage.A hilly route of just under 42 miles heading out of Wantage via Chain Hill, just past Farnborough we head across to Great Shefford, East Garston, Chilton Foliat and Ramsbury where we can restore our strength with tea & cake at Cafe Bella in Ramsbury (http://www.thebellramsbury.com/cafe-bella.html) before returning to Grove via Lambourn. Pace will be to suit the group. Although the evenings are getting lighter, bringing lights would still be sensible, just in case mechanical problems lead to a delay. |

Riders:Bryan CharlestonChris Walters David Bridge David Smith Frank Schroer Janet Charleston Ken Pelton Neil Mowforth Nick Dunton Ursula Hallam Riders = 10 Report:A very good turnout for a blustery March day with a promise of rain. The car park at Old Mill Hall was packed as there was a dog show in the hall. Nine of us set off from Grove in sunny but blustery conditions and we picked up 2 more riders on the route.Picking Chain Hill as our exit from Wantage was possibly not a good idea, particularly in windy conditions. We seemed to have a head wind on the steep parts and a very strong cross wind on the nice swoopy bits. We were protected from the wind quite a bit as we headed down to Great Shefford and on to East Garston, however there was a quite heavy shower of rain on the way up to the Goodings. We had a puncture just outside Chilton Foliat where, as we were all quite wet, Chris kindly led the group to Ramsbury and the Cafe, while the ride leader stayed with the others to guide them to Ramsbury once the puncture was fixed. Chris and Ken decided to push straight on after reaching Ramsbury. Cafe Bella was every bit as good as the website promised and, to me, seemed very good value and is highly recommended for future rides. The sun came out again while we were in the Cafe and stayed with us for the rest of the ride. The route from Ramsbury via Whittonditch was new to me but was on pleasant, quiet roads and we all had a great descent down Baydon Road in to Lambourn and a straight forward return to Grove via Hackpen Hill, with various groups peeling off and heading for home along the way. Four of us arrived back at Old Mill Hall just as the dog show was finishing. A welcome to Claire on her first ride with CTC Wantage. | ||

Report:A select group of cyclists for this ride. Cold yet sunny morning’s riding, with a coffee stop in Abingdon. The cycle path between Didcot and Long Wittenham is being re-surfaced and will shortly be in excellent condition. Lunch at Golden Balls Notcutt’s along with all the grannies being given Mothering Sunday treats. Steve was suffering from a cold and a sore knee, so we abandoned the middle section of the ride to Stadhampton, back-tracking to Wittenham and over the Clumps to South Morton, then “Cercle de Didcot”. Hagbourne Hill was the only real climb of the day. Steve then led though the Harwell complex and on to the cycle path to Ginge. Back just after 3.00, amazing missed most of the rain showers forecast. | ||

Report:Only David and I were around, so we decided to start early. We rode up to the Ridgeway via Goddards Brook, then over the other side, up the next big hill. Then 2 brilliant twisty tracks back down. And up to the Ridgeway near A34. Under A34 and down to Prospect Farm and Harwell. It was all going so well until we heard the hissing. David had 2 punctures despite having tubeless tyres with latex in them. We reckon the latex had gradually run out in his several apparently puncture less months. We had a tube each, and thanks to borrowing a pair of pliers from a passing biker were soon back on the road. We got to Betterton and he got another flat! No tubes left. Tried to patch it, but it wouldn't stick to the tube due to latex. So David pumped and set off for Grove, and I set off for Steventon so I could get car if needed. It wasn't - we both arrived home at about the same time. Moral: if you run tubeless, carry 2 tubes! | ||

Riders:Adrian WestAndy Belcher Barry Gills Brian Hipwell Chris Walters Edith Hipwell Gez Cornish Glen Savegar John Stamp John Talbot John Tranter Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Riders = 13 Report:Spring had certainly arrived today! In fact temperatures would not have seemed out of place in mid summer!A bit of a busman's holiday really (being my occasional cycle commute to work!), but a lovely afternoon with excellent company. We were certainly blessed with end to end sunshine, and fab displays of daffodils as we passed through the countryside. A pleasant tea stop at Eynsham Emporium sitting in the courtyard, and then a gentle return via Stanton Harcourt on mostly quiet lanes (Just the occasional tractor and Porsche with its roof down), with a single ascent from river level at Newbridge. Even the short stretch on the A415 seemed pretty quiet today! Thanks everyone! Glen S | ||

Weird, I am sure I was on this ride (and so were you Robin!). Had a puncture which was fixed with everyone lights following the proceedings. This was on a very warm day for the end of March and as the clocks were changed in the weekend before it so most of the ride was in the (twi)light |
