Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Iain Kent |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Out to Eynsham via Charney Bassett, Appleton, Cumnor and Farmoor reservoir. Then turning West to have a coffee stop at Aston Pottery. Returning through Buckland and Charney Bassett. 39 miles on mostly flat roads with an average speed of approx 14-15mph depending on the group and weather! Lights will be needed. Let's hope the snow stays away this week!Update: Looks like the snow is set to start any time after 3pm tommorow so will probably do a shortened version taking a more direct route up to Aston. We can warm up there if needed or just head straight back which would be 28 miles in all. New route would be: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=349187 |
||
Report:Considering the day started with -9 degrees in Wantage this morning, we were grateful for the +2 degrees of warmth we experienced this afternoon! It turned out to be a good idea to have taken the short cut as the first flurries of snow arrived just as we were approaching Aston at about 2pm. We decided to miss the coffee stop and get back before the weather worsened. Apart from the cold, conditions were actually quite good and I think we were all pleased to have made the most of the 'weather window' and clocked up 30 miles before the snow came. | ||

Snowdrops at Welford Park | 2* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:The plan is to cycle over to Welford Park via Lambourn to see the snowdrops .Entry fee is £5 for adults in aid of a local charity. We'll have lunch either at the tea room there or at a local pub. Please bring your camera, an extra warm layer and you may want a change of shoes - takes about 45 minutes to walk around the snowdrop route, which can get muddy if it's been wet. Please see the link below for further details. We'll return via Boxford, Chaddleworth and Brightwalton. Around 30 miles total at a relaxed pace. Note the slightly later than usual start time. Report:For the second year running this didn't work out quite as planned. After snow on the preceding Thursday and subsequent low temperatures a number were evidently put off by the threat of icy roads, although David W had said he was coming and Dave S had emailed to say he and Ursula would see us there.On arrival in Wantage only David had come and after waiting a few extra minutes (just in case) we headed off through the Letcombes. Fortunately the roads were largely clear and damp rather than frosty. However, we could see snow ahead of us on the downs as we approached Letcombe Bassett. The junction at the bottom of Hackpen Hill wass our decision point, whether to proceed to Lambourneor stick in the Vale. Unsure of what conditions would be like higher up we decided to play safe and chose the latter. We managed to contact Dave and Ursulla, who were on the road near Kintbury to give our apologies (did you make it to Welford?) and then dropped down through Childrey and on to Sparsholt where there is a good if much smaller display of snowdrops opposite the church. We continued on to Kingston Lisle, dropped down to uffington and on to Frenham, where we decided to stop and warm up over a coffee at the Woodman. We returned via Shellingford, Gainfield and Charney, Dave splitting off to hanney and Steventon before Denchworth. Thanks Dave for your convivial company on a winter's ride. Steve | ||

Hi there, yes we made it - courtesy of our fat tyres, the towpath out of Newbury was quite snowy - shame we couldn't meet up. Plenty of snowdrops, nestling in the snow, at Welford plus good tea and cake! A new place for us even though local. Journey back to Newbury via Brightwalton. Thanks also to Dave for convivial company :) |

Report:The worst ever mud on this ride! It must be something to do with freezing and then thawing. It was sticky and claggy and pulled us to a halt within a few hundred meters of Crab Hill. Even the to of the Ridgeway had a bit of this, though by riding on the grass it wasn't impassible.But we did get going again, and made it to the Ridgeway and back. Up Goddards Brook, down Betterton. Chris's new light worked well so looks like being very good value for money compared to more established and more expensive brands. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Glen Savegar |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:80-100km all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, riding pace 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.This month we will head to Lechlade for lunch. Proposed route will be- Wantage, Letcombe Regis, Letcombe Bassett, Childrey, Sparsholt, Kingston Lisle, Uffington, Woolstone, Watchfield, Coleshill, Lechlade. We will return via Langford, Kencot, Alvescot, Black Bourton, Bampton, Aston (Optional stop off at the pottery for tea), Buckland, Gainfield, Charney Bassett, Denchworth, Grove, and Wantage. |
||
Report:Well it turned out to be a fine day following Saturdays gales. An early morning frost and clear skies south of the Thames turned cloudier as we headed north of Lechlade to skirt the edge of the Cotswolds.A very nice lunch at the Black Cat Cafe, with jacket potatoes, sandwiches, and even a late morning (early afternoon?) English breakfast among our choices. Post lunch and a traverse on quiet lanes to Alvescot and Black Bourton, before joining the main road to Bampton and Aston, where it was decided to push on, resisting the temptation of cakes at the pottery. A good move really, as it seemed only a short time since lunch, and rewarded us with maximum benefit from the lovely but fading winter sunlight. A big welcome to Camen from CTC Oxford City, on her first ride out with CTC Wantage. Thanks everyone! Glen S | ||

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:Chris Walters |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Ride out at a standard 2* pace, via Steventon, Sutton Courtenay and giving Didcot a wide berth to Blewbury, where we will stop for tea either at the garden centre there or at Chilton, before heading back on the road via Ginge and Lains Barn.A slightly longer ride than usual, but the first 2/3 of the ride is flat and we have the option to shorten a little after the tea stop if anyone needs to. Lights recommended for the end of the ride. |
||
Riders:Adrian WestAndy Belcher Brian Hipwell Chris Walters David Smith Edith Hipwell Guy Yeates John Stamp Robin Tucker Ursula Hallam Riders = 10 Report:Good to see a decent number so early in the year - mention must be made of Andy's lovely new bike and his fear of having a "not unclipping" moment, which fortunately did not come to fruition on this ride.We picked up Guy barely before we had picked up speed, and gave Robin a tow back to Steventon (note to stats compilers - need to deduct at least 45km from Robin's total for the year!) The next noteworthy moment happened after Appleton, where Guy's bike decided to stop working, so he left the ride. Bless, he's not got a great record of finishing Wantage rides... Folks were pretty much gagging for a stop when we got to the garden centre in Blewbury, and that meant that we'd have a hill directly after tea. We had a split on the way back with a couple of folks returning via the A417 and the rest tackling the Col d'Ginge. All in all, a long but rewarding 2* ride, made all the better by the start of the summer. | ||

Report:A longer route tonight. No just up to the Ridgeway but over the other side, up again and down near West Ilsley, then up to the Ridgeway near the A34. Back on the Ridgeway and down via Ginge.Richard had 50+ miles under his belt and was feeling a bit knackered by this point. Is that a first? | ||
