London Midweek Sightseer | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Hampton Hill |
Description:Please note that although I am contact for this ride I haven't entered and it's unlikely I will be riding it this year. This is an un-led audax ride and you will need to make your own arrangements for following the route - JohnPossibly the most exciting 100km audax you will ever do and definitely not the quickest. See all the major sights and some fascinating lesser known parts of one of the world's great cities. Mainly using cycle routes, cycle paths and quiet roads this is the best possible way to see London. A very clever route that takes in a lot of quiet paths, backstreets and parks to visit many of the major tourist sites in London from west to east and back again. There are some VERY busy sections of on-road though, notable through the city past St Pauls, Trafalgar Square, Aldwych and near Buckingham Palace. Don't enter if you're not prepared to mix it with the midweek London traffic! It's not a quick route due to numerous traffic lights, junctions, paths etc. but you don't want it to be, this is a sightseer ride. You even get to fly at one point It's also not conducive to keeping a big group together. Generally twos and threes form to help with the navigation and keep it friendly. Talking of navigation I highly recommend following the route sheet on this one, GPS devices struggle amongst the buildings and with the tricky turns. As this is an audax event you will need to pre-enter beforehand. There is easy on-street parking near the start and allow yourself plenty of time to get there. http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/15-558/ |

Leader: |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.A relatively flat 72km ride out east, taking afternoon tea at Benson. Out via Appleford and Stadhampton and back via the Moretons and Rowstock. |

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Walters John Groves John Talbot Karen Froud Karen Robertson Nick Dunton Richard Saunders Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Nice weather! On the way to Benson we managed to pick up John and a puncture in Sutton Courtenay before the day's major incident of some very dangerous driving and a threat of violence to a club member. No contact was made on either though, and hopefully Thames Valley's Finest have had a stern word with the driver....Tea at the Waterfront was rather pleasant, out in the sun by the water front. We bade farewell to Karen and John and Nick before Blewbury, and then got into a head-down effort for the rest of the group - some great training, and well done, everyone! An unplanned but enjoyable diversion through Ardington village, and then we were back. Well done to everyone for riding well and strongly, and most importantly, for not losing their cool. | ||

Lunch at 'The Tea Cosy' was enjoyable, if a little slow, and the steady but manageable ascent of the escarpment allowed everyone to work off their luncheon ! Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.OK, I have been very impressed with the growing confidence and fitness levels of the 2* gang this year. So surely now is the right time for a spicy little challenge - Uffington White Horse Hill!! I know many of you will assume this an impossible challenge, but believe me it isn't. You just have to take your time, have a couple of stops as necessary and the reward at the top is a huge sense of achievement and the most spectacular view in Oxfordshire. Not to mention the fun descent all the way down to Woolstone. The rest of the ride is an easy loop around familiar roads. 22 miles, with - a hill!! |

Tuesday Evening 4* STREATLEY SPECIAL | 4* |

Leader:Andy Cowan |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours ride at a riding pace in excess of 24km/h (15mph). May be hilly.This is at the top of our Evening Ride range at 55k and 600m climbing but there are plenty of fast stretches so we should just about make it in 2 hours, but please schedule in an extra 10 mins just in case. We've had a great turnout recently and the last thing I want to do is put anyone off so the emphasis will remain on the group so let's make it a record 4* turnout. Up Lains Barn, Rowstock, Harwell, Blewbury, Streatey, up Streatley Hill, Compton, the Ilsleys, Farnborough down Chain, wait for me and home. Pump your tyres up, two bottles and a rear light please. |

Riders:Andy CowanAndy Pixton Frank Schroer John Quinn Ken Pelton Nick Fisher Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Riders = 8 Weather:Report:I don t really know what to make of that one but I m sure the other Leaders will tell you some rides can be a bit stressful for the poor ol` leader and this for me was one.The issue became the climbs with about a dozen stiff ones, with Streatley half way through, our range in climbing ability began to show particularly with the need to make the most of the wind and crack on when we had the chance, so handling the splits was a bit distracting, oh and did I mention one frankly unroadworthy bike! Ken you`re going to have to sort that out I m afraid. Having said that, the will was there, everybody gave it their all, with especially spirited efforts from John who found life easier without a huge rucksack this week and Andy who must be the 3*KOM, surely!!It was a tough route and we have a new rider who slotted in really well. but be warned, he skipped up Streatley and volunteered to go back down again, so welcome Nick. We had the pleasure of the company of Mr Jarvis for a few miles who met us past Harwell but after a tough one on Sunday and joining at a point of decent pace decided a pootle was probably in order. Av 16.8 Thanks everyone for coming , it was good to do Streatley on a Tuesday night if perhaps a little over ambitious, but maybe not? | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A slightly longer ride this week heading through some of the Springline villages to Sparsholt, where we'll stop to have a look at the historic church with its unusual wooden effigies.We'll ride out through Stockham and after a short stretch on the A417 to East Challow, we'll join the track and bridleway to Childrey (its mostly paved but with a short stretch of easy off-road that's a little rough) from which there is a great view over the Vale. We'll rest by Childrey pond before continuing on to Sparsholt. On the way back we'll retrace our steps almost to Childrey before turning down the lovely long and gentle descent to Challow station. Back to Grove via Goosey and Denchworth. A round trip of about 14 miles. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Report:A pleasant dry evening although a bit windy. And a new to the group appearance from Bob.We started up Crab Hill, Goddards Brook and on to the Ridgeway. Then, after checking that Bob was up to it, we went down the back of Betterton and back up to Scutchamer's Knob. We went down the Harwell descent - always a blast! Then to give Bob a final test, we approached the 'bridge of doom'! He handled it with aplomb, and a big grin (or was it gritted teeth?) We returned the way we came out and got back to Grove at about 8:40. | ||

Saturday morning off-road ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Crowmarsh Gifford Primary School. OX10 8EN |
Description:STOP PRESS. I may be late for the start. Please call or text me so I can keep you posted. RobinOur monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. Held on the second Saturday of each month, we start from various locations to take in some of the best tracks in the south of the County. This ride again goes from Crowmarsh, starts with Grim's Ditch and covers a similar area down to Goring, but using many different tracks to the May one! Each ride will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road. The terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. We aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). |
||
Report:Setting off up Grim's Ditch we immediately encountered hundreds of joggers on the 100km Race to the Stones coming the other way. Yes, 100km!So we picked another route, only to find ourselves joining the flow of the runners on a later part of the route. So, the original route plan went out of the window and I started improvising with the aid of memory and my trusty OS map. It ended up with a pretty brilliant route (if I say so myself) which included a tough rooty climb, twisty singletrack through the woods and a fast and fun descent down Mongewell Woods. | ||

Ironstone Country | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Woodstock |
Description:Note change of date.A special away day ride in the Ironstone hills of north Oxfordshire. Starting from the free car park next to the library off of Hensington Road in Woodstock (MAP this ride explores the rolling countryside of north Oxfordshire. We set off initially heading westwards to Charlbury before we turn north to Great Rollright where we will take a short break at the coffee shop at Wyatts Farm Shop. There is an optional short detour to the Rollright Stones from the coffee shop if we wish. The ride then explores small villages nestled in the north Cotswolds to Edgehill and its magnificent views. Descending steeply the ride crosses the M40 and almost immediately climbs the fabulous hill to Burton Dassett Hills Country Park. You have no doubt seen the tower on the hill to your right as you drive north on the M40! By now we will have dipped our toes into southeastern Warwickshire and before we return to Oxfordshire we will stop for lunch at the National Herb Centre in Warmington. After lunch the ride heads south to the west of Banbury past Broughton Castle, through the tranquil Barfords (birthplace of my paternal grandmother), Bloxham and the Bartons back to Woodstock. The ride is a decidedly lumpy 100km on mainly minor roads and lanes. Option for an additional coffee stop at the end in Woodstock. |
||
Report:A small but beautifully formed peloton of five riders on a re-run of last November's ride.Warm and sunny weather (quite a bit warmer than forecast) throughout. Once we got the slightly draggy section from Woodstock to Enstone out of the way we were into the fantastic scenery of north Oxfordshire. Most of us took the short detour to the Rollright Stones before stopping at Wyatts for tea and cake. After refreshment the rolling terrain to Edgehill with great views followed. The sharp descent on new tarmac was rudely interrupted at the bottom by a right-hand turn to get to the bottom of the Burton Dassett climb. The scenery around here is fantastic and the views magnificent and it wasn't much longer before the steep little climb through Warmington and lunch. The bistro at The National Herb Centre outdid themselves again, they are extremely welcoming to groups of cyclists and the food is fantastic. Highly recommended. After lunch we enjoyed the run through the Barfords, the gated road to Over Worton and the Bartons. A closed and flooded road near Woodstock nearly thwarted us but the workmen kindly let us through the barriers. Shortly afterwards we were enjoying ice creams in the market place. Great ride, great company, thanks for making it such an easy ride to lead | ||

Betjeman Ride | 1* |

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:Betjeman Park, Wantage |
Description:As part of the Wantage Festival and in partnership with the Trustees of the Betjeman Park in Wantage, this is a gentle beginners ride from the Park to Uffington, where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's.We leave the Park and cut across to Grove past the famous Plane on a Stick, then Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to the parish church in Denchworth, where delicious tea and cakes await. 10 miles and no hills - seriously, anyone can do this! If you are up for it, we will guide riders back to Grove/Wantage as well. |
||
Report:A very interesting and enjoyable version of the Betjeman Ride this year. The origin of this ride was to make a connection between Wantage and Uffington, both places where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's-50's. It was proposed by the Trustees of the Betjeman Millennium Park in Wantage. So this year we had two very important (although arguably somewhat elderly) Trustees on the ride - Ralph and Sue Cobham. They added greatly to the interest and fun of the ride, although we also dropped our average speed quite a lot!Oh - and the new Mayor of Wantage, StJohn Dickson, arrived to send us off in style! Lots of kindness and good catering at Uffington church. Delicious cakes! Also two new riders intending to ride with us again - welcome to Mike and Dan! | ||

Repeat of one only 3 of us did in the rain so we'll try to get up Chain, straight to Newbury, Shefford, Manor Hill descent and home. If any leaders want to take a ride please do, with my lack of IT skills and sense of direction we could benefit from some countryfied wiggly routes, so don't be shy! |
||
Riders:Andy CowanJason Jones Ken Pelton Laura Pittard Nick Fisher Phil Ward Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Quite heavy drizzle, a bit nippy, wet roads and a concerned leader after last weeks splits in the hills resulted in a consensus that this would be a more together 4*, and so it proved.No-one had any problems with Chain and from there to Newbury we were all on the wheel with Phil doing a nice relaxed job on the front, so far so good. We turned towards Shefford with, and I was delighted to see Nick back for his 2nd ride, taking his turn pacing perfectly. Then a first for me, simultaneous punctures, Jason coming through his debut repair in front of a group with flying colours and Phil showing he's an old hand but unfortunately a tyre split meant he had to limp home so sent us all on. Again we kept it together, down Manor and home to watch Nibali hand the title over. For me a really good ride with the whole group on the same page, easy and thanks very much everyone. Report:Tonight's ride was short on riders (just two Daves), but big on drizzle. It made for a distinctly soggy ride.We went out via the usual Crab Hill route and then to Lockinge and along to Betterton. We chose the climb up to the Ridgeway from here as the surface was likely to be consistent despite the rain. Once atop the Ridgeway we rode eastwards before dropping down to West Ilsley, stopping only for a super sharp flint puncturing my rear tyre, creating a split too long for the tubeless fluid to deal with. Thanks to Dave for coming back up to check on me and assisting with the plugging of the hole. From West Ilsley we headed along the road towards Lands Ends, and then up Wether Down (Ice Valley), and then back to Lockinge via the Bitham Wood and Goddard's Brook. Then we took the usual route back to Grove via Crab Hill. This Dave was jealous of the other Dave's waterproof shorts, but a good ride was enjoyed by the both of us. | ||

Blazing Saddles - Wiltshire White Horses | 3* |
---|
Leader:David Smith |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Marlborough - Hackpen Hill |
Description:Tour of all eight of the visible White Horses in Wiltshire and a flight of locks thrown in. Refreshment stops at the 40km and 90km mark - bring snacks if you are likely to feel hungry in-between. Note also a short bridle path section through Marlborough to see the Manton white horse.As Marlborough is hosting its annual Jazz Festival this weekend, we will meet at the Hackpen Hill car park (free) on the Ridgeway - that's Hackpen Hill, just north-west of Marlborough (NOT the Hackpen Hill we regularly ride from Wantage and the Letcombes). Here is the Google map for it. And yes, that means a hill-top finish! From Hackpen Hill, we will be taking the anti-clockwise route, descending to the north-west, to see the Hackpen horse followed by Broad Hinton and swinging south to Cherhill. Climbing up and over the Wessex ridgeway, we'll sneak a peek at the baby of the stable - the millenium Devizes horse - before descending to our first stop at the Rowdey Cow serving a variety of breakfasts, cakes and icecream. Then we will head out west to Westbury stopping to admire the Caen Hill flight of locks. Options at Westbury to simply take the route out to the viewpoint or, if time/inclination permit, a climb up to the white horse itself. After that a rolling section via Market Lavington and Urchfont takes us to the second refreshment stop at the Woodborough Garden Centre. Another sneaky peek view, this time at the Pewsey horse, brings us to one of our best climbs of the day, Alton Barnes with it's own steed. A swift route through the back streets of Marlborough to see the Manton white horse and we will arrive at the foot of Hackpen with just the polka dot jersey up for grabs. Please let me know if you intend to saddle up and ride! |

A fantastic ride and very well led Dave. Just tough enough to make us work really hard but nicely paced so that no-one fell off the back. Thanks for that ! |

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |

Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.Middle of Grade anti-clockwise circuit of about 100 km with 900m of climbing, mostly in the first half and none very sustained, taking quiet lanes where possible. After a fast run down to Lambourn we head East along to Boxford then take scenic lanes over to Snelsmore Common and onto Hermitage for an early lunch at Hillier's Garden Centre. After lunch we pass through Yattendon and Upper Basildon and on to Goring. After a brief encounter with the Chilterns we will head back via Wallingford (tea stop), Appleford and Drayton. |

Report:By 0930 Wantage market square was awash with 50 – 60 cyclists. But major logistical difficulties were avoided – all except three were off on a ride to Winchester! (www.hyde900.org.uk/2015/03/23/w2w-2015). (It always amazes me how I manage to avoid the publicity surrounding local events).So three of us set out with far more serious intentions than a paltry 53 mile ride to King Alfred’s final resting place. Three soon became two as Joy decided she would be holding the group up and headed off to do a local loop instead. If we had had a few more riders she might have been persuaded to continue, but it turned out to be a harder ride than I predicted be due to the brisk wind. So Louis and I did the ride in beautiful weather and enjoyed the extensive views - the section between Boxford and Snelsmore is particularly recommended. We opted for a quick bun and tea stop at Hermitage before heading on towards Goring. The clouds threatened as we worked our way along the minor roads through Ipsden and down to Crowmarsh, but the sun reasserted itself as we sat outside Bean & Brew at Wallingford (Recommended) for a well-earned cakestop. On the way out of Wallingford we picked up another rider, Kieran, making his way from Hertfordshire to Bath and showed him a much more pleasant (though quite a bit longer) route back to Wantage. Taking turns at leading into the wind we made rapid progress back to the market square. | ||

A few mechanicals also meant we were behind schedule by the time we got to Lilley. Riders were given the option of cutting the ride short by going directly back to Wantage via Farnborough or going the longer way via West Ilsley. Around half opted for the short version so we split the ride in two with the remainder taking the longer way around. An uneventful run round to the top of Chain ensued followed by the lovely whoosh down to Wantage. The longer routers were back around 8.50pm but still did the 45km in less than 2hrs cycling time so without the hold ups we did pretty well. Thanks to Nick for sweeping | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A few ups and downs on the 1* ride this week as we cycle out through Charlton to follow NCN544 to Lockinge, Betterton and Ginge. We'll drop down to West Hendred and return via Ardington and Lains Barn. Two fantastic descents to enjoy and some great views over the Vale. A round trip of about 14 miles.Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Riders:Alvaro ReyBrian Hipwell Edith Hipwell Ian Mackay Lorna Swanton Sarah Dore Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:6 riders set off from Grove to be joined by Alvaro at the start of the track off Larkhill (NCN 544). From Lockinge, we climbed steadily to Ginge and continued to the very top of the hill above West Hendred before stopping for a well-earned rest. As ever the descent into West Hendred was fun although there seem to be growing number of substantial potholes to negotiate . A short stretch along the A417 (now a lovely road surface ) brought us to Ardington, where first Edith and Brian and slightly later Alvaro left us to continue into Wantage.There were a few tiring legs when we reached the top of the climb to the Lains Barn cross-roads but the reward was our second long descent of the evening through the trees and out into the vale. There was something of a headwind on the stretch back to Grove and a short sharp shower prompted some of us to don waterproofs (at which point the rain abruptly stopped, of course). We were back in Grove at 8:10, meeting the 2* group coming down Main St just as we turned into School Lane. Thanks everyone for an enjoyable ride and welcome back to Ian on one of his occasional visits to Wantage. | ||

But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Report:Another dry evening and the trails are even getting to be a bit dusty. (I"m writing this on the Saturday afterwards between 2 days of heavy rain so that's probably all changing!)Good to see the return of JD making a total of 5 of us, and DY benefitting from a clean bike and well-adjusted bike thanks to me borrowing it for a test ride We we up Crab Hill and Lark Hill then crossed to Manor Hill for the climb up to the Ridgeway. Then back East, going down Jolly Green Giant and up again. At this point DY had a puncture in his tubeless tyres again - fixed with a rubber 'anchovy' and a bit of friendly help and CO2. Having rested a bit, and with user consent, down opposite Betterton and back up to Scutchamer's Knob. This all encouraged us for a final big descent at E Ginge, which is now running brilliantly again. Then across the fields a bit and back home, ending a relatively long ride just before 9pm. | ||

Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Gloucester |
Description:UPDATE Saturday 4pm : - With no one else to ride with and the weather forecast looking no better I've decided to cancel this ride and will try and re-schedule it later in the year.UPDATE Friday 11am :- I've only had two people express interest so far and the weather forecast looks very poor on Sunday. I'll be making a go/no go decision by 4pm Saturday. Please check this listing after then to see if the ride will go ahead. Please let me know if you are planning to ride if possible before Sunday so I know to expect you at Gloucester. Starting from Gloucester exploring the Wye and Severn valleys including the Forest of Dean, Tintern Abbey and a crossing of the iconic Severn Bridge. Parking will be at Castlemeads Car Park (£2 all day). Please note that Google has an error with the location of this car park if you search for it. It's actually on the A430 near the docks (https://goo.gl/maps/WcuWP. We will head westwards adjacent to the A40 and then for a short distance on the A48 before heading on quieter roads into the Forest of Dean where we will stop for elevenses (Kaplan's Café in Coleford). This section is undulating with a couple of stiff climbs until we get into the Wye Valley. This glorious section of road runs adjacent to the river past Tintern Abbey to Chepstow. There's a long steady climb after the Abbey before dropping into Chepstow. Lunch will be taken at Chepstow Garden Centre which has a café, restaurant and outdoor seating in pleasant surroundings. After lunch we cross the Severn Bridge (hope you have a head for heights!) and return to Gloucester via the flatlands of the Severn valley. Option for an afternoon tea-break/ice cream at the canal-side Black Shed café near Slimbridge. Please note there are two short sections of towpath alongside the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. The surface of the first is a little rough but road bikes will be fine. The total distance is about 125km (78 miles) but a large portion of it is completely flat with all the climbing early on. This is a touring ride so we won't be going flat out and there will be opportunities to stop and take pictures, take in the scenery etc. Please be confident that you will be able to ride the distance at an average 3* pace before attempting this ride. |

Fortunately, that didn't matter - though he was more cautious than usual down the slopes.As it was pub night we set or Westwards, and we decided that is was worth heading to the White Horse for a stretching ride.
