A very wet evening indeed for the first autumn evening ride of 2015, but two of us decided to go for a short ride via Denchworth and Hanney and back again. Luckily the rain eased off half way round and it did turn out to be quite a nice night on the bike

CANCELLED - Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 3*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
OK - decision taken. This afternoon's 3* ride is CANCELLED.

High winds, strong rain and surface water aren't going make it either safe or pleasant!

Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.

A classic Vale loop suitable for the winter, featuring a cheeky climb of Uffington White Horse Hill from the rarely climbed western face. This is a modified version of the Childrey Spring Classic route. Out via Denchworth and Hanney to Southmoor, back down south via Fernham to Compton Beauchamp, then the great climb and home via Uffington and Goosey. I reckon the view as you descend the east face of the Hill (the way we most commonly go up) is the most spectacular in Oxfordshire. only 53km / 33 miles, but with some serious climbing. Given the restricted daylight, I am planning not to have a tea stop.

A strong wind out and a tailwind home with no misshaps or anything.

A good ride and good company - A perfect Autumn evening ride.

CANCELLED - Regular Wantage Ride 3*
Leader:
Nick Stokell
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Update Sunday 0700: RIDE CANCELLED. Looking at the Wantage and Chiseldon forecasts there is no change in the timing and the wind will only decrease below 20 mph after 1300. Sorry about that! Thank you to Richard (Pethybridge ?) for alerting me yesterday - I had been inside all day on DIY!

Update at Sat 2030: Currently winds of 20-25 mph with higher speed gusts are forecast. I will consider possible route changes, check the weather early tomorrow and post a decision by 0830.

Nick

Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

No quite to Barbury Castle!
This is a variant on David Smith’s November 2013 ride to Barbury Castle. This time we will avoid the up and back to Barbury Castle (forestalling possible mutiny!) in favour of a trip out to Coleshill on the homeward leg. Relatively hilly on the way out (should keep us warm) and some steepish (but mercifully short) lumps at Badbury Clumps and Fawler to test out tired legs. There are options to shorten the return route if the weather is particularly grim or we are running late – nevertheless at this time of year lights should be carried. Since the lunch stop is early (Three Trees Farm Café at 38.5 km) I am not planning a coffee stop so snacks may be needed.
The envisaged route is:
Wantage – Letcombes - Lambourn – Baydon – Aldbourne – Ogbourne St George – Chiseldon – Liddington – Wanborough – Shrivenham – Coleshill – Faringdon – Fernham – Uffington – Kingston Lisle - Wantage
20 km/h touring pace, should see us back in Wantage between 1500 and 1530.

With a gentle breeze, well 50mph, forecast maybe it wasn't a surprise that only 2 of us were out. Fortunately despite the wind, it wasn't raining and wasn't cold.

We went up Crab Hill and Goddards Brook to the Ridgeway, then had the joy of being blown up a very slight gradient without actually having to pedal at all.

We went down Ice Valley and back up to Scutchamer's Knob. Turning west, as soon as we left the cover of trees, we heard and felt the power of the wind. We pushed hard to maintain a waling pace forward. Then, turning right down Zigzag Hill, we were both blown off the track into the field!

Once we got lower down things eased off a bit and we managed to struggle back to Wantage and Grove.

A great turn out again on a blowy night but gale force gusts weren't going to cancel this ride!

A base building interval session with enough puff left during the recovery periods to have a natter. We must just be getting fitter!

We're over half way through now and I wanted to say a really big thank-you to everyone for making these sessions such a success. It's been a great team effort with everyone taking their part, whether that's been leading sessions or helping set up and clear away at the end. (clap)
The general feedback appears to be that we should go for another session after Xmas. I'll find out about hall availability and in the meantime, if anyone has any helpful feedback, please let me know.

Easy Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 1*
Leader:
Sara Ward
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.

We will head out from OMH along quiet roads and a stretch of bridleway (cycle track!) to Childrey, then wend our way through the villages and descend into Uffington for tea. Returning through the vale. A gentle 19 miles/30km to clear the head, stretch the legs and escape the hoards of Christmas shoppers.

Suitably warm clothes, gloves and lights required.

Final update: The ride is ON. It is windy, bright and forecast to stay that way. We plan to meet as planned and utilise this wintery sunshine.

Report:
We were pleased to welcome Constance and Karl as new riders and fortune definitely favoured the brave and hardy eleven. The temperature stayed at 2 degreesC but we were rewarded with a delightful, bright and sunny ride out to Uffington.

The Forget-me-not cafe did us proud - tea, coffee and home made cake all served with efficiency and a smile by Donna daughter of Des Higgs (giggle) and co. The group stayed together well for the second leg too and we were back in good shape before the light and temperature dropped significantly.

Thanks all for a very sociable afternoon.

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove 2*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

THE RIDE IS ON! Let's go for it. There is squally weather forecast but it isn't due til about 3pm. So we can adjust as necessary. Please be prepared for showers.

With just over a week to go before the Mince Pie ride, I'm planning a route with a few ups and downs to get our climbing muscles in action before we tackle White Horse Hill next weekend. There will be (at least) two options for those who want to do some extra climbing (or not) with some short-cut options back to Grove too.

First, we'll tackle the Lains Barn climb before dropping into Lockinge to join Sustrans route 544. We'll climb steadily to Ginge and then use the Farm Track to East Hendred (road option via West Hendred for those that would prefer). We'll continue to Steventon where we can potentially split the group before heading back west across Cow Common. The shorter route (27m, see below) will loop round to Childrey via Goosey, coming back into Wantage via the track to East Challow. The longer route (31m) will loop round to Kingston Lisle and have the option of taking in the Letcombes as well (+2m).

Tea stop in Wantage at the Bay Tree Café at the end of the ride. Please bring a snack for a short stop at East Hanney, half-way around. Lights are required and will be needed for cycling home after tea.
