Riders:Andrew RobertsonAngela Sanders Brian Hipwell Chris Lea Chris Walters Des Higgs Edith Hipwell Henk Altmann (deceased) Jo Bindloss-Gibb John Tranter Lorna Howard Peter Busby Philip Thornton-Evison Sarah Tranter Sorrel Williams Steve Joyce Steve Sanders Steve Swanton Riders = 18 Report:Ater weeks of either starting off or returning through Denchworth this week the route went South East of Grove. The evening was sunny with a breeze and the route was out towards the Hendreds (don't know waht each one is). Lains Bard hill saw the split of the groups with the faster goup speeding through Ardington, Ginge and halting at the first Henred - opposite The Hae. We had a breather here whilst Des found a stray cysclist to have a chat with. The slower group deciede to take the official cycling route from Ginge which is a bit rough and come out in the other Hendred. Both groups went down Featherbed lane with the slower goup turning off the main road to go to Steventon. The faster group also went to Steventon but rode a few extra miles by cycling down to the rounderbout (the group was split because of the traffic lights), up through Milton (I still can't understand how there can be a stream so high up) and down the the Sutton Courtney - Drayton road. We met a few 3 person persuit s here. At Steventon the was a bit of a race along Cow Lane and at the end the the leadres just caught a glimpse of the slower group heading off through Hanney. After a break whilst the riders regrouped we again set off through the Hanneys and yes we endd up in Denchworth again. Timing was spot on wit both groups joining at the junction by Tescos. Distance just under 24 miles at an average of 15.5 mph. Many thanks to Henk for sweeping.Peter B

Riders:Barry BakerChris Lea Geoff Neill Lee Wright Paul Wright Peter Clayton Simon Dales Sorrel Williams Riders = 8 Report:Great sunny day for the 25 mile offroader.The offroad started from Ginge following the Sustrans route,turning right through Chilton and over the Ridgeway at Compton Downs. Good decent into East Ilsley where liquids were taken on at the Crown and Thorns Pub. Afterwards the second part of the ride being more challenging the riders travelled west through Woolvers Borders to meet Old Street. The going was a bit muddy in places with the odd branch to duck under but otherwise OK. Next following Old steet,with an excellent decent to Lands End, up to the Ridgeway. Decending viar Ardington Down back to Ginge to complete the ride. One rider had some mechanical problems but all agreed it had been a good ride

Riders:Bryan CharlestonChris Lea David Bridge Edith Hipwell Henk Altmann (deceased) Joseph Kingbury Liam Smith Sorrel Williams Riders = 8 Report:The weather forcast of wind and rain must of kept the cyclists at home tonight we set of with 9 Rider, but quickly lost David and Jo who decided he did not like riding in the wind. we headed out in the wind in the direction of Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett. Henk plan was to climb Hackpen hill and back down blowing Stone hill, however faint hearted cyclist like me decided that i did'nt fancy climbing up onto the downs where the wind would be even stronger. We decided to head back down the hill through Childrey and out round the Vale. Henk got a punture at Childrey and sent us on while he stopped to mend it. The rest of us completed 19 miles and arrived back into grove in good time. on my way home I met Henk cycling back into grove to check we arrived home safe.

Start Location:WMP |
Description:A full day ride of 80 to 100 km, including a pub stop for lunch.Flattish route round the Thames Valley to the Vine PH at Cumnor (one climb just before lunch). Return via Abingdon, Milton & The Hendreds |
||
Riders:Barry EastwoodDerek Boutle Des Higgs Mavis Rose Neil Warner Pat Hurt Sue King Teresa Belcher Riders = 8 Report:Twisty little route in the morning; I kept tacking bits on, so we didn't arrive at the pub too early, so we ended up doing Denchworth, Charney, Kingston, Northmoor, Stanton, Cogges, Sutton, Eynsham and Farmoor, before the climb of Tumbledown Dick to Cumnor & lunch. Waited at the top and gave directions to the PH, and promptly managed to lose two - but they turned up safe and sound a few minutes later.Was a chilly day, but the sheltered garden and wan sun was warm enough to sit outside in, and Richard Divall then arrived just as we were set to go, having been dog sitting all morning. A quick diversion over Boars Hill, to work off the repast, then a swoop down to Bayworth, and back through Abingdon, Drayton, Milton & the Hendreds/Ginges to Wantage. Neil accompanied Me, Sue & Thresa to Uffington, where we were joind by Rex for a well deserved tea.

Riders:Helen BeaneJulian Gough Pat Hurt Sue King Riders = 4 Report:After depressing days of inclement weather, a late afternoon departure on the Fri led to a nice wait in the sunshine on the car park called the M25. After dropping Sue off on an overnight visit to a friend, finallly arrived at the campsite around 8pm, just in time to find Jules finishing his Fish & Chips.The event has obviously become more popular over the years since my last visit, as the main pitch area now also had an overflow field, and solo / lightweight campers were being tucked into odd corners and nooks around the school buildings. We had quite a large free area on the pitch, so got Jules to drag himself round and share the same area as us & Helen, rather than hide around the corner. Saturday I was up and away on the 200K Audax: confused the organiser, who'd obviously thrown away my entry of 7 months previous and kept no record. Chased the fit boys to the first control (50 miles in 2 & 3/4 hours), then stuffed my lungs back in and decided to ride at a more sensible pace. Two bigs loops took the riders East & south through the lumpy bits around Saffron Walden, then around Newmarket & around the Bedford Levels to the Rally. Jules & Helen pottered around, and Sue rode over Sat PM, and we all went foraging into local hostelries, disdaining the BBQ & Jazz night, where old favourites were being murdered by the band. Sunday we all had a pleasant pootle out across the South of the Levels, and then folllowed an NCR along the Great Ouse into Ely. Me, Sue & Helen explored the Cathederal & shopping areas, whilst Jules wandered around, stumbling across a practice session for a classical singing concert, which almost made him miss the return trip. We ambled back across the Levels, making Sue repeat the (not too rough) tracks she'd come across on the Sat. We wandered wound the trade and private stands for a whiles, then in the evening attended the Quiz held at the local Cricket Club, but unlike the last time with Jules, we didn't end up victorious. Saw JB & Audrey, and the Hickmans, who had trained/ridden from home. Moday was to be a short ride, as we wanted to watch the Grass Track finals and scope any remaining bargins, so we broke camp, then headed NE along country lanes, and eventually dived into the depths of the Breckland Forests. After spending some time following tracks in random directions, just to see what would happen, we eventually made it to the visitor centre for tea & cakes, and then an easy following back of part of Sat's Audax course. Sat for a few hours watching various semi-finals and finals of the Grass Track, and then ambled round the closing Trade stands, but couldn't really get interested in buying anything, so wended our way home. Most enjoyable time; it's what the Birthday Rides should be like.
