Start Time:

Report:
Our first wet ride of the season saw the 2* riders joining the 10-mile club for the evening. It was spitting gently when we set off and gradually got heavier as we made our way to Charney Bassett. Lorna turned back with a sore back at Denchworth and Henk left before Charney.

We conferred. It didn't look like getting any better but probably wasn't going to get much worse either. So as all were wet already we decided to continue. Unfortunately, the rain gradually got heavier ...

Miserable conditions, but it was not cold and it was at least good to be out in the fresh air. We had a brief stop under a large tree on Church green in Stanford, before returning via Park Lane and Asti stud. Back in Grove we went our separate and damp ways.

A warm welcome to Dennis, who enjoyed the ride despite the weather.

Saturday afternoon ride from Grove - easy 3* 3*
Leader:
Chris Walters
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
63km (40 miles) afternoon ride out to the Eynsham Emporium for tea, riding pace of 20-22km/h (13-14mph). This will be at the easier end of the 3* range for riders wishing to try a 3* ride - it's not hugely long, and pretty flat for a 3*, but we'll try and keep to the advertised pace.

Report:
Well, we had no 2* "upgraders", so plan B was enacted, taking in a larger loop to the north of Eynsham before tea. Neil only just made it in time, and we picked up Kevin and Wen at Gainfield crossroads.

An incident just after the A40 crossing saw a group of riders disappear off with no clue where they were going (the wrong way as it turns out), and they seemed to be all following each other. Anyhow the flock of lost sheep returned, somewhat sheepishly, eventually. First rule of club rides, know where you're going. Second rule of club rides, if you ignore rule 1, stick with the leader.

Tea at Eynsham was splendid in the little courtyard, nice cakes and ice-creams all round. Kevin and Wen set off a little early to get a head start up the hill to Cumnor, and timed it perfectly! After that we had folks dropping off at various points to get back to their respective homes, and another "following the wrong person" incident, which nearly saw Geoff going back to Longcot with Des and Derek - I was sure Geoff lives in Grove!

Ten Miles to Fabulous
A group of women and young girls and one young boy had a great afternoon cycling the lanes.
Naomi came over from Witney. Barbara came with Ben (4) attached to the bike and Ellie (8). Jan, Lisa and Annette came from Challow with Nirvana, Lois, Hannah, Ella.
The group all agreed they were all happy to cycle to the pub at Charney Bassett via West Hanney.
We set off from Grove and went to Denchworth and on to West Hanney, where we stopped to admire the Village Green. Then took the road towards Kingston Bagpuize where we did not take the first turning to Charney but added a bit more to the trip to loop round to Charney.
We got to Charney in time for last orders and sat and enjoyed the village atmosphere before heading back to Grove.
A tremendous ride which saw a record number of women and young people out riding and we all felt FABULOUS.

A glorious evening, 11 set out from Grove, some not sure whether to attempt Hackpen or not. We got through the Letcombes without incident, climbed up to the base of Hackpen and then created the plan of action. Three riders would take a short-cut and then rejoin us on the other side of Childrey, and the rest set off, huffing and puffing. The north-easterly breeze was in our favour, and everyone made it to the top without stopping - well done to all.

The descent back down to Sparsholt was loads of fun - 40mph +. Catching up with the breakaway group at Childrey (sunning themselves in the evening light), we carried on to Goosey, and then back to Grove. Great ride and great company - thanks!

A flattish ride of about 35Kms going via Locking, East Ginge, East Hendred ,Chilton and up nearly on to the Ridgeway before heading down to Ardington for tea stop.
lf conditions are good ,dry and warm, then I propose an addition to the ride( 3Kms). Going up on to the Ridgeway at Scutcham Knob (no Ardington tea stop) along to the Mounument ,part way down Chainhill and left down track to A338 and then into Wantage with tea stop at Sainsburys. Offroad bike recommended and bring some refreshments as tea stop is at the end of the ride.

Report:
Six riders took part including Sue Sentance who rode the same event last year. A somewhat quicker pace from last year and a bit longer. I'm happy to say along dry tracks and the sun came out for part of the time. There were a number of minor incidents. Firstly a young crow decided it didn't want to move off the track adjacent to the Harwell site and had to be almost lifted to one side. We think it had a damaged wing but looked OK.
The grassy descent(Middlehill Down) alongside Chainhill road contained some 200 sheep and there was some discussion as whether to proceed or go down the road. Eventually did so ,be it a little slower and with minimal movement of sheep.
Finally yours truly took a dive into the shrubbery on a fast descent past Furzewick Farm to Wantage. He wasn't hurt as the general vegetation and nettles broke his fall. After a quick dust down of weeds from his back he was away off down the rest of the descent with tea taken at Sainsbury's.
Overall an excellent ride inspite of the nettle rash.

A top rate evening. It started out badly with young Robbie having had a crash on the way over - bloodied and shaken, he was patched up by Tony, and we got under way. All 20 of us. What a fantastic turnout, no doubt helped by the weather and lack of England playing.

The ride was without incident, and we cruised into the wind to Shrivenham, and then sailed back, dropping a few folks on the way who were taking their direct routes home to tea.

Special mention for Adam (Bryans brother), Peter for a good workout after his knee op, Dan joining us while on holiday from university, Robbie for easily keeping up with us despite his battle wounds (and he's only 10 years old - one to watch for the future!), and finally "big brother" David who kept his spirits up and did what big brothers should.

A select group of 3 10-milers rode out from Grove on a beautiful summers evening. We followed the route as planned through Charlton to the Nelson and out along route 44 to Betterton. We stopped at the top to admire the views before speeding down the hill into Ardington.

Here we stopped for a mellow half at the Boar's Head sitting outside in the sunshine. Refreshed, we decided to do part of the hill again, so returned to Lockinge, turned left up the hill, carried on past the church and then turned left up the estate road to regain the Ardington road by the Icknield Way. Lovely cooling breeze on the descent...

As Lorna hadn't cycled in to Wantage from Lockinge before and Alvaro was heading back to Charlton anyway, we decided to retrace our steps to East Lockinge and back into Charlton.

Another enjoyable evening.

45-55km (30 - 40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of ~18km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

This month we will head out on a flattish route, taking in Lyford, Fyfield Wick, Netherton, Appleton, Eaton, Cumnor, and Wootton. We then have the option of a short but steep climb to Boars Hill for lovely views across to the "dreaming spiers" of Oxford. A glorious summers afternoon cycling. Actually I was a bit concerned it might prove to be a bit too hot at first, but once underway the gentle pace ensured a comfortable temperature. In retrospect it was a slightly mixed bag of a route really, with some lovely quiet stretches and a couple of less inspiring but unavoidable bits. The ascent of Boars hill was well worth the huffing and puffing, and a good chance to pause at the summit to enjoy a well earned drink of water. The views across to Oxford were beautifully clear from the top road, followed by a cool swooping descent of Foxcombe Hill to rejoin the Wootton road.

One slightly worrying moment on route to Cumnor was the sight of an upside down car in the ditch on the opposite side. On investigation it appeared the incident had happened a while back judging by the yellow "police aware"stickers. As a response to the impatient driver who decided to blast his horn(I doubt he/she will ever get to read this... but!..)You really do need to grow up and show a little respect! There may well have been casualties in that vehicle !....

The "Merry Miller" at Dry Sandford provided a pleasant cold drinks/coffee stop, before a very enjoyable final few miles cycling back to OMH in the lovely sunshine. Not one of my best rides I'm afraid, but some nice moments along the way !...

Thanks everyone for your company ! : )

A beautiful evening for a ride. I can't remember why it seemed a good idea at the time, but the route was out via the Letcombes and Childrey to Uffington and then straight up White Horse Hill. Always a good work-out. Welcome to new rider Paul. Nine cyclists headed out of Grove in the direction of Lains barn for the first hill of the ride. We made exceedingly good time with everyone beating me to the top. Then for the roller coasters up and down the hills around Ardington and the Hendreds through Featherbed Lane and down the hill to Steventon where the cyclists thought I was leading them down a dead end lane - they have no faith in my judgement, but they followed reluctantly. We did make it back on the Hanney road and headed for home. But a cycle accident slowed us down when Dennis came off his cycle at traffic slowing bollards. with his back light broken and his pride hurt we continued home.

Another delightful balmy summer evening to be out on the bike. Lorna and I travelled out to Challow via Downsview Road and the track past Crown up to Segsbury. We rendezvoused with Barbara on the track to Childrey and continued along the minor roads through the Springline villages to Westcot, enjoying the views up to the Downs and down into the Vale. We stopped for a rest by the manor in Kingston Lisle.
Refreshed, we enjoyed the whizz down the hill and then with the wind on our backs glided back to Goosey. Here Barbara needed to make a decision concerning her route back. As the loop via Denchworth opened possibilities of a quick stop at the Fox, it wasn't difficult...
