Description:An old favourite. Heading north for an arc round Witney and dipping our cleats into the Windrush and Evenload valleys. A mix of small country lanes and some larger roads where we can stretch our legs. A few hills as we flirt with the fringes of the Cotswolds – plus the climb from Tadpole Bridge to Buckland – but nothing serious. Two small sections of bridle path. Tea stop at Aston Pottery. 78.4km. Back c. 5.30Route: Grove, Denchworth, West Hanney, Southmoor, Appleton, Cumnor, Farmoor, Swinford Bridge, Enysham, Cuckoo Lane, East End, Ashford Bridge, Wilcote, Delly End, Hailey, Priest Hill Lane, Crawley, Curbridge, Aston, Great Brook Lane, Tadpole Bridge, Buckland, Charney Bassett, Denchworth, Grove. |

Riders:David SmithJerry Bird John Groves John Tranter Joy Arthur Karl Blake Nick Dunton Sharon Bedford Ursula Hallam Yvonne Bird Riders = 10 Report:Perfect cycling weather and a great group of riders made for an enjoyable outing. We welcomed Andrew Small from CUK Reading. The route was enlivened by Denchworth Fete and Enysham Carnival, or was it Enysham Fete and Denchworth Carnival? Whatever. The new single-track section through the woods was a novelty and voted as “niftyâ€. Difficult to get started after the tea stop in the sun at Aston Pottery but we were soon battling Buckland Hill and upped the pace a little from there for the final sections home. Thanks to David for sweeping the ride. | ||

Report:Welcome to Steve Legate on this first ride out with the club.We took the usual Crab Hill route from Grove to Wantage, before heading up to the Ridgeway via Larkhill and the Bitham Wood. From there we descended the other side through Ice Valley to Lands End, before climbing back up opposite Betterton. We then had a great drop down the Ginge singletrack and came back to Grove via the Bridge of Doom, the sneaky woodland singletrack and Crab Hill. | ||

Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.We will head out via Charlton, then take Route 44 to Lockinge, before moving on to Ginge. Then a climb as we head to West Hendred, being rewarded by the downhill into the village. This followed by a short stretch on A417 to Ardington, then over the bump and down past Lains Barn and back to Grove. Round trip of about 12 miles, with sunshine ordered..... Route changed, on the night to the ride route from 27th June. |
||
Report:Very select little group tonight, despite the weather, so this time, the consensus was for a "very gentle potter", so we adopted the route from last week, which had no takers due to the weather, and headed out via Denchworth and Charney Bassett, Gainfield and up to Pusey, before a cheeky little cut through via the estate, using bridleway, back towards Charney Bassett, then via Lyford, and Denchworth.A lovely flat ride (in contrast to the other rides' "hill" themes), in glorious sunshine and just the right temperature. Thank you Carin & Lorna for you company on an enjoyable ride. Oh, one thing, the sunshine was ordered and it actually came(!) | ||

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.'Not likely to be very hilly.' Well how about one hill? Kath planned the ascent of White Horse Hill for last month, but the weather was against us and the ride was cancelled, so with another month of riding in our legs, let's have another go. A pretty much flat ride apart from the large bump in the middle. This hill is achievable and the view from the top will be well worth it. Out through Challow, then metalled bridleway to Childrey, on to Westcot and the Spring line before the ascent, then home through Woolstone, Baulking and Denchworth. |
||
Riders:Gareth SmithJo Little John Hibberd John Tranter Karen Townsin Roger Turnbull Susie Turnbull Val Smith Riders = 8 Weather:Report:What a fantastic evening to be on the top of White Horse Hill. Just stunning. For many of us it was the first time this year; it was good to be reminded of what a challenge this climb is. However, everyone made it and there were smiles all round as we took in the glorious views and chatted to the 3* riders.Then, as we swooped down the hill the view back up to the white horse, positively shimmering in the sunlight, afforded more photo opportunities. Thanks all for a simply glorious mid-Summer evening ride. | ||

Thankfully, Jon was happy to lead half the ride, a few minutes after the others had set off. Everyone seemed to stay together quite happily, at a fairly brisk pace, on the flat sections of the ride. We caught, and passed the 2* group, who were heading to the same hill via a different route. Each climbed dragon Hill at their own pace, and we gathered at the top, to take in the view. After catching our breath, and taking the usual team photos, we set off on the homeward leg, just as some of the riders from the 2* and other 3* groups were joining us. The descents into the vale, and the subsequent flat return, were again taken at no more than a top end 3* pace (honest). This was obviously too slow for some, though, as the leader was last to return to OMH. Welcome to Neil, on his first ride with us, and thanks to David S for sweeping the lead group. | ||

Off Road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Goring, Manor Road / Long Meadow SU 59959 80297 |
Description:This is a great ride for twisty singletrack in the woods around Woodcote. Not too much climbing - not none, but a bit less than average, and the two main climbs are quite close to the start of the ride. Also there is are major hazards along the route, as long as you can steer around the trees.That all makes it a route that has proved popular in previous years with riders of a wide range of abilities - everyone can enjoy swooping through the woods, and the faster riders find the turns come more quickly which keeps the challenge levels up. We re-group at the end of each section, which doesn't take long, and no-one gets lost in the woods. Top tip: don't wear your darkest sunglasses in the woods! --- General description: Monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy on second Saturday mornings. The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. |
||
Report:Trails in perfect conditions before the rain this week, and not too hot. We headed out east and up the hill into the woods. Then worked our way round clockwise to Woodcote and the long slightly downhill run through the woods.Even the section just before Mapledurham has improved in quality after many years of having been churned up by forestry operations. All capped off with a run along the Thames. | ||

2* Saturday Afternoon Ride - the Oxford Special Series | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:UPDATE: I have tweaked the route around Oxford to give a bit more interest - it is now a clockwise loop doing Port Meadow before the centre of town and the riverside. See attached revised route.This is a great opportunity to discover secret ways in, through and out of central Oxford which will be new to many of you. Somewhat similar ride to the one I led in April, but now a clockwise loop around the town. We head out via West Hanney and cross the nifty Southmoor footbridge - the safest way to cross the A420. Then we follow the quiet road parallel to the A420 to Cumnor and swoop all the way down Cumnor Hill. Then the real fun begins with a super cunning bike-safe transit of the A420/A34 Botley junction and a lovely circuit around Port Meadow before heading into the centre of town via Wolvercote and Jericho. We will use my very own St Cross College for a VIP coffee stop. You can only get in if you are a friend of the Bursar, with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles. We then use my most cunning bike track and riverside route out of town to North Hinksey. We climb Cumnor Hill and head for home via Wootton, Tubney and Fyfield. It is a long ride for an afternoon, but we have a few short cut options in the final section which we can use if necessary. I don't expect to be back before 5-5.30pm. Having said that, there are very few hills and we will stick to a steady 2* pace - 12mph / 19kph. |

Riders:Amanda SeddonGareth Smith Gill Stansfield Jo Little John Groves John Tranter Karen Townsin Nick Dunton Nicole Pethybridge Roger Turnbull Susan Holdroyd Susie Turnbull Riders = 12 Weather:Report:Well, the most perfect summer afternoon and a great group heading off for the big city. All went well, the cunning bits and the magic moments all worked as intended and we were able to fight through the remarkable numbers of tourists on St Giles to get through the big door to that oasis of calm which is St Cross College. Congrats to Gill who chased us down around Oxford and eventually managed to join us at the College. Green's Cafe did us proud as ever for refreshments and we (slightly reluctantly) set off again through the tourist mayhem to the tranquility of the river bank and the lovely cut through to North Hinksey. Having conquered Cumnor Hill, we decided that time was pressing and took the short and straight route home via Fyfield and Charney.It was great to see Amanda on her first ride with us for quite a while and thanks to all for a really enjoyable afternoon. Thanks to Nick for excellent sweeping - no mean feat when you have to keep the group together through the milling throngs! | ||

Betjeman Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Betjeman Park, Wantage |
Description:As part of the Wantage Festival and in partnership with the Trustees of the Betjeman Park in Wantage, this is a gentle beginners ride from the Park to Uffington, where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's.We leave the Park and cut across to Grove past the famous Plane on a Stick, then Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to the parish church in Uffington, where delicious tea and cakes await. 10 miles and no hills - seriously, anyone can do this! The average speed will be around 10-11 mph. If you are up for it, we will guide riders back to Grove/Wantage by the same route in reverse as well. |
||
Riders:Brian HipwellCarin Tranter Christine Ashdown John Tranter Karl Blake Martyn Wigmore Paul Penfold Roger Postbeschild Tony Ashdown Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Despite some minor confusion in the lead up to the event on the actual date, this proved to be the most popular Betjeman Ride so far. Riders were popping up from all corners of the Park and by the time we were ready to roll there were 23 of us. This was further enhanced when Tony, Christine and grand-daughter joined us in Denchworth. So 26 in total!Given the large numbers, we split into two groups for most of the ride, and it was therefore fortunate that I could call on Roger, Brian and Karl to assist with shepherding the groups. Thanks to all! The weather was perfect, mercifully not too hot, and all the riders managed the ride out to Uffington with no problems at all. The youngest was 8 years old, but this didn't seem to be any hindrance. As last year, we took the opportunity for a little detour to Baulking Green and had a go at bike-back cow herding. Long story, but Roger proved to be good at it... The Uffington Church catering and musical team were magnificent and, suitably fortified, various groups set off in slightly different directions in the general direction of Wantage and Grove. It was a very fine afternoon! | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.*** Cancelled due the heavy rain ** A change of plan - heading east instead of west to repeat a route I led last year. Tonight, we'll follow the little-frequented road from East Hendred up to the Ridgeway to visit Scutchamer knob, a prehistoric long barrow, reputed to have been an important meeting place in saxon times. Although a steady climb from the end of the Ginge Farm track, this is probably the easiest of all on-road climbs locally to the top of the Downs . There are panoramic eastward views across the downs to enjoy from the car park at the top . We'll head out via Charlton and Sustrans route 544 returning via the Hendreds, Ardington and Lains Barn. A few stretches of easy off-road but all manageable on a road bike. Round trip of just under 18 miles. |

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.**It might be soggy and dark so bring lights and waterproofs !!!** Its been a while since we've been up Chain Hill so give your bike a special clean and get ready for another challenge! Once at the top of Chain Hill we'll head down the fantastic descent into West Ilsley then back up again over the downs to Brightwalton and Woolley. From there we'll head along the A338 to the descent down Court Hill and back to grove via Denchworth. The route is just under 45 K with 500+m climbing so you can expect some climbing |
||
Report:We few, we happy few, we band of brothers ...Well, actually only two undaunted souls braved the rain on an epic adventure to take in the challenges of Oxfordshire and Berkshire in the rain! Eddie and I headed off to Mount Doom (Chain Hill) which was despatched with ease and without incident. After a brief rest at the top we splashed our way through puddles (sorry Eddie - I'll fit a guard next time!) and on to Farnborough. At the bottom of the descent into West Ilsley (and thinking to myself 'this is ok, whats the worst that can happen?' ) I got a puncture, which was nice . After a brief wrestle with the tyre and with the help of Eddie's portable track pump we were off again up and over the downs to Catmore. It required only a glance between riders to know that the shorter route back up the A 4494 was the better option and so with pride and conscience intact we cut the route short and ran for home! Thanks for a memorable ride Eddie | ||

Riders:Carrie KembletonNick Stokell Ruth Fisher Riders = 3 Weather:Report:Well if I'm honest I wouldn't have ridden this evening if I had not been leading the ride! But Ruth and Carrie turned up so we set off southwards in the steadily increasing rain. Just after Leckhampstead the inevitable occurred and Ruth had a puncture. This was quickly repaired by her despite a rather pathetic attempt by the leader to speed things up with a CO2 canister.With shoes full of water and a little cold after the stop we decided to shorten the ride heading back at Gt Shefford. Half way up Manor Hill Carrie announced that her rear tyre was getting soggy but it held up sufficiently to get back down to Wantage. Certainly one to remember (though we never did get that photo). Description:This is an Audax event run by our neighbouring club Didcot Phoenix. Entry to the ride can be made following this link:http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/16-493/ 110km cycling event starting from Milton, Abingdon. Controls at Barbury Castle, plus 2 information controls. A scenic ride to the iron-age fort of Barbury Castle. Enquiries: audax@didcotphoenix.co.uk One personned control and 2 info controls; light snacks at finish. To be brutally honest, you can't see Barbury Castle from the route as it is (a) a lump and (b) some distance from modern roads. Don't let this stop you entering and enjoying a cracking route. |

Riders:David SmithJon Townsin Karen Townsin Richard Pethybridge Robin Tucker Ursula Hallam Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Well, my legs are certainly tired this morning following a decidedly lumpy 105k route. I can't begin to imagine how David's legs are after the 226k epic!Robin joined us for the first half of the ride before heading back to enjoy his birthday Sunday celebrations. The first half of the route was direct and fairly fast along the A417 and then 'spring line' towards Barbury and the first real climb of the day at 44k. After the short but steep visit we headed back down for the next out of Ogbourn St George. At 17%, not the steepest, but a fairly long drag up the escarpment nonetheless. This was followed by various ups and downs past Aldbourne and Eastbury to Great Shefford where I had to call time and force my fellow riders to stop for a cup of tea/coffee at The Swan. Suitably refreshed we headed off for the final 20k past West Ilsley and a hairy half mile up the A34. Ursula, who we had left to manage her own pace was waiting for us at the end with the kettle on! Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Report:Welcome to the off-road rides to Jason, who braved a bit of mud in lieu of his normal 4* Road Ride.We started with a puncture before getting too far into the ride, and we ended with an incurable puncture that saw Dave B catching a lift home in a car. From Grove we took the usual Crab Hill route to Wantage, and then up to the Ridgeway via Goddard's Brook. The conditions were lovely on top, so we decided to drop down through Ice Valley to Land's End and then climb back up to the summit via the nearby track from the Ilsley road. The Gingle singletrack beckoned, which is where Dave B suffered his puncture. You might like to ask him which brand of tyre to avoid in future if you're running tubeless. A good ride, even if it was elongated by unfortunate puncture stops. | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.Tonight we'll head eastwards to Ginge and West Hendred. We'll take the cycletrack along the A338 to Charlton and after winding our way through the estate, pick up Sustrans Route 544 near the Nelson PH. We'll follow route 544 through Lockinge and Betterton climbing gently to Ginge. We can then enjoy the lovely long descent into West Hendred. Once in the village, we'll take an easy off-road track from the church through to Ardington and then return to Grove via Lains Barn, with a second long descent into the Vale. A round trip of about 12 miles. |

A good turnout too - a warm welcome to Thiyanga and Gemma on their first rides with us and welcome back to Kerry.We had a bit of everything on the ride tonight: road, cycletrack, steady climbing and 2 lovely long descents plus an introduction to cyclocross and some real rough-stuff! Heading out through Charlton to join the Sustrans route by the Nelson, we made steady progress to Ginge stopping on several occasions for a brief rest and to admire the views up to the Downs and across the springline plateau. At West Hendred we stopped by the church and dismounted to walk through the graveyard before carrying our bikes first over a kissing gate and then over a low stile. Crossing a small bridge over Letcombe Brook, we climbed up into the field beyond. There we remounted to join the path across to Ardington, initially a baked mud track through a field of ripening wheat and then metalled, this was a lovely change from the A417! At Ardington, Gemma and Alvaro continued on to Wantage while the rest of us climbed up to the Lains Barn crossroads (with aplomb) and sped down into the Vale, passing several small groups of Didcot Phoenix riders out for their Tuesday training ride. Back in Grove about 8:10 we arrived at OMH at the same time as the 2* group. A really enjoyable ride with a smashing group; thanks everyone. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.It seems a while since we've headed out through the Letcombes, so I thought we'd do just that this evening. After Holborn Hill we'll swoop down into Childrey, then Sparsholt and Uffington before heading back via Baulking Road, Park Lane and Denchworth. Apart from Holborn Hill and the slight undulations on the short sections of the Spring Line road, this is a flat ride of 32km/19 miles. |

Description:** UPDATE 09.45: UNLIKELY THOUGH IT SEEMS RIGHT NOW, THE WEATHER FORECAST FOR THIS AFTERNOON IS PRETTY GRIM. HOWEVER, I AM AN OPTIMIST! SO THE RIDE IS STILL ON...Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. An old classic on some rarely used little roads down into the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Park Lane to Stanford in the Vale, then to Hatford and a tiny road to the north. Then a quick dash down a short section of the A420 to Littleworth is rewarded by a dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Clanfield, along to Bampton and a great tea stop at Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes around Shifford and Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett. 37 miles of mellow wonderment! |
||
Riders:Jan McCabeJenny Gower John Tranter Nick Portsmouth Roger Veasey Sue King Terry Penn Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Well, an intrepid group set off from Grove full of optimism that perhaps we might get lucky with the rain storms. This lasted until half way to Denchworth at which point rain jackets were donned and hatches battened down...After that it got very, very soggy. All afternoon. Relentlessly. The route was fine and all went according to plan, although we did cut it short after the cafe stop. It was great to see Terry and Jenny out and also to see Roger's continuing return to club cycling. Also great to see Sue King riding with us after a long absence. Aston Pottery provided their usual fine catering, but we did leave a lot of water on the cafe floor by the time we had finished dripping! We also seem to have found a new trend for mechanical problems arising and being fixed at Aston Pottery. Following on from Karl's stiff chain link being solved by the judicious application of Flora margarine, this time Roger had a major shoe failure solved by the application of considerable swathes of parcel tape. Thanks to all for being mad enough to join me! | ||

||
Report:Louis and I were discussing the advisability of carrying a tyre boot patch while waiting for the start. Prescient. The Pethybridges turned up at 8.59 having realized they had parked in the wrong place. I always find the first climb out of Pangbourne murderous with cold legs. After that, the remaining climbs were tackled in style, although the roads were filthy after heavy rain. We had a minor altercation with a resident who insisted that we shouldn't be riding down the lane from Bix because it was access only. Rubbish. My nemesis was the descent into Marlow were I had a rear tyre blow-out - second time this has happened to me here. There was a split in the tyre the size of a fingertip which Richard expertly patched with a cereal bar wrapper, no rubber being available. Having just paid for four new car tyres last week, I was not amused. After a good lunch at Jenner's we hit the flatlands west of Maidenhead. I had a second puncture and Louis joined in the fun with a flat of his own. To everyone's amazement, we got back to Pangbourne without seeing any rain. Chapeau to Louis for cycling to the start from Wantage. | ||

So, with that in mind, tonight we'll tackle Holborn Hill. We ride from Grove to Wantage and after a very short section on the B4507, we'll quickly turn off onto quieter lanes that take us through Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett. We'll then climb the hill, steep but quite short, before a rewarding descent into Childrey. Then it's back along familiar roads with a very short stretch on the A417, through Goosey to Denchworth and the pub for those who'd like to stop. |

There was some trepidation around Holborn Hill, but actually everyone managed it really well and then of course we were rewarded with the downhill into Childrey. A stop by the pond was required to fix Mandy's front mud guard with the ever versatile cable tie and we were soon on our way again with another stop in Goosey to enjoy the wonderful evening light. Welcome to Martyn on his first club ride since the Betjeman and to Andrew, Paul's son, visiting from Devon. The riders up the long climb of Chain Hill were rewarded with a 'halo of flies' (Alice Cooper - Killer 1971) at the regrouping point. Then down the fantastic descent to West Ilsley via Farnborough where I didn't get a puncture - Yay!. John, however, did have a mechanical which caused him and Nick 'the sweep' an unfortunate delay, which meant they didn't see us turn right to Catmore. After a longish wait Andy volunteered to go and investigate while we carried on. Kirsten led the way up most of the remaining climbs on her NEW BIKE, which got the tongues wagging behind me. The earlier delay meant that we arrived back to the Ridgeway at 8.15 and a decision was made to head back to Denchworth via route 1, rather than the more scenic Court and Windmill Hills. Andy, who wasn't party to this decision, however did enjoy the planned route (plus an unplanned visit to Chaddleworth!). Lights are now sensible, whether stopping or not. This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level, or indeed the bar! A recent predilection for heading South (and upwards) is complimented by a Northerly tour of historically troubled lands* where apparently a disorderly alehouse in Aston was suppressed at the inhabitants' request in 1700. In the 16th century inhabitants laying out a meadow in Aston were entitled to bread and a gallon of ale from those with rights there, and "complex meadow customs" persisted until inclosure. Nearby, contaminated wells in Cote may have caused a diphtheria epidemic in 1893, leading to a return to Alehouses as a more reliable source of wholesome liquid refreshment . For those expecting a musical reference I can merely refer you to a topical massacre of one of Bizet's best known tunes.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imgxOmW6VZ0 Cheers ! * http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/oxon/vol13/pp62-66 |

Riders:Hugh FalknerJason Jones Louis Hall Nick Fisher Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Sara Ward Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Gathering at OMH in a Summer’s evening balm with the promise of light winds and warm sunshine, a wariness was evident at the prospect of a tandem lead. Fear not, calm the chattering gears, the Ryan brothers were not in town! However, a pleasing array of materials and componentry spanning steel, alu and carbon was evident with Jason’s shiny new silky smooth transmission a highlight and Hugh with goodness knows what treasures rattling away in his bagsLuke Bryan’s “harvest time†sprang to mind as we forged ahead past ripening fields, spotting the odd baled stack and even a ploughed completion. Progress paused (thanks Jarv for the heads up) as Louis picked up a Charney puncture and elected to make his own way thereafter. So it was “Saddle back up and let the big wheels roll†as we dropped onto the flatlands and made rapid progress along the quiet network of narrow lanes between Bablock Hythe and Standlake, inhaling the occasional tangy insect and studiously ignoring the five drops of rain that fell from puffy cumulus ranging over Witney and beyond. Our route turned away from the threatening clouds but straight into the path of a very cross woman in Standlake, towards whom I extend thanks for giving us such a beautiful demonstration of unrestrained car hornage. Tracking back and forth across the lanes around Aston found us some new tarmac, some tired farm tracks and for Pete an opportunity to reprise his grass track skills Climbing back up to Buckland sprang our brace of Nicks into a flurry of impressive polka dotted action, leading on to negotiating a pony and trap rolling road block on the fast downhill run to Charney. All ended well and we arrived on schedule at the Fox to be met with fervent Moorish action already underway in the garden. I was until now, unaware of the national status of sides based in Bampton, Headington and Abingdon leading the continuity league, spanning many centuries. The staple fuel of Morris dancers seemed appropriate at this point and a just reward for a glorious ride – my thanks to you all for your contributions, not least my patient super stoker Sara, enjoying her second 4* romp (56.6 km at 29.3 kph). | ||

Suitably fortified and weather abating, we ranged along the plain to the sound of gunfire towards our mystery sight. A tour of Gaza, Baghdad, Auckland and Wellington ensued. But a surprise awaited - even for the ride leader - a gnarly single-track through the woods was errr...oops, unexpected Must have been the Google mountain-bike that came this way After a minor tumble, a good nettling of the ankles, and a bird-less reconnaissance of the surrounding area, mission aborted! Apteryx bulfordis is an elusive creature - maybe it has flown the hillside? Hopefully a few were had and all was forgiven on the smooth tarmac of the 'cracking' Haxton to Everleigh road - just plain riding at its best! Unfortunately, a few km before Crofton, the earlier minor tumble manifested itself in a puncture but David gallantly let us all ride on while he fixed it. As Crofton was in full-steam, we had only just sat down to tea and colourful cake when he arrived (slightly out-of-breath?). The final leg took us through a delightful thatchery of Wiltshire villages. Not without drama, the earlier minor tumble caused a couple of spokes to give way on an incline somewhere between Ham and Inkpen and we made our way with care back home. More of that summer rain returned but we'd already enjoyed a 3* day out. Thanks to everyone for a great ride. Kudos to the trio who rode over from Wantage and back | ||

Description:This is the third in this season's series. The purpose of the 3* lite rides is to give confident 2* riders the chance to try out a 3* ride ride at the lower end of the 3* riding pace. There will be opportunities to experience riding at a faster pace on the flat and to attempt some hills. The atmosphere will be supportive and encouraging and there will be the opportunity to stop for a coffee and a natter at the end.All welcome. It's time to conquer Chain Hill as part of a pretty lumpy excursion into the West Berkshire Downs. There is lots of climbing, but that means lots of descending too. The route is 41km with over 500m of climbing, but we'll take all the hills at a steady pace and wait at the top for as long as we need. We have all morning, so there's absolutely no pressure. You know that if you hate hills, the only way to get better is to tackle them!! |

This meant one less climb (sorry Jordan!) but probably a more pleasant descent.A short lived shower of rain and a puncture didn't dampen the spirits of a great group, who all repaired to the Bay tree Cafe to cosily squash round the 2 remaining tables.
