A truly wonderful day weather wise with warm sun and a light wind. We met 6 other riders who had made their own way to Munch at Southmoor. We were well looked after at the cafe and as the weather was so good we all enjoyed chatting on the grass (socially distanced of course!) in front of the cafe. A really good ride with good company and no problems with riders or machines.

Report:
A warm but damp morning turned rapidly into a wet and windy one! Des and I rode out on the planned ride through the Letcombes and Childrey getting wetter by the minute! Des shed his glasses as he was blinded by the rain. As we approached Sparsholt the rain gave way to patches of blue sky and we shed our waterproofs. Riding at pace to keep warm and with the wind behind us we flew through Kingston Lisle, Baulking and Childrey and went on towards Charney before heading back to Denchworth for our rendezvous at the Fox.
On the way we caught sight of David Bridge on a circular route to meet us and Martin Wigmore who was scrumping walnuts!
As we arrived at the Fox Lizzie Hardingham joined us along with Ali Kempson.
We were greeted warmly at the pub, where we had coffee and a selection of Danish Pastries for £5 which was delightful!

Thanks to Steve at the Fox and all for accommodating us!

Report:
A fine morning for a cycle ride with friends, and so nice to have 8 riders out. A big thank you to John Tranter for agreeing to lead a second group of 4 to accommodate this.
David, Des, Gerry and I headed out first and soon realised there was quite a strong wind. Des had ridden from Longcot and was going to peel off after the tea stop to complete the ride. As we struggled towards Buckland from Charney Bassett and on to Shellingford we soon realised why Des was not keen to return to Grove!
John led the second group of Lizzie, Sally and Nick and they quickly caught us up as we stopped to remove layers. From Shellingford we went to Watchfield skirting the married quarters, on through Shrivenham and Bourton, a truly picturesque village, before going through Bishopstone and Idstone towrads our welcome coffee stop at Ashbury. As we were ordering our coffees the second group arrived and were able to enjoy a socially distanced chat keeping to our separate bubbles.
From here it was literally all down hill with the wind behind us we flew through Knighton, Uffington, Baulking and Goosey home.
A lovely ride with good company, new ground for Gerry and Lizzie and a first for Lizzie this being her longest ride to date, well done!

This was a fantastically well attended ride, with 11 riders. We split into two groups to maintain the maximum of 6 on a ride. Roger led the first group to set off and I led the second group. Thank you Roger. :)

There was also 6 people meeting us at the socially distanced coffee venue in Ardington so that made 17 riders altogether. We saw some people out for the first time in a number of years as well as the returning regular riders.

The ride was very pleasant with no mishaps. We took photos of the two groups back in Grove. (We missed off David who'd returned directly to Wantage rather than coming back to Grove.)

There were 10 riders so we split into two pods with Carin Tranter very kindly leading pod 2. My ride went first, but we had to stop at Southmoor for Michael to buy a bottle of water, so the second pod overtook (no problem).
We took the bridleway from Longworth to Hinton giving wonderful views of Longworth Manor and the Thames valley. Pod 1 went back in the lead after the bridleway, we made good progress back to Grove where a few of us stopped for coffee and cakes purchased from Parsons. We sat on the wall like a row of delinquent teenagers! A very enjoyable ride with problems at all. Thank you everyone.

Leader:

Start Time:

Start Location:

Description:

Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

All-day touring ride (95km with some ups and downs)
Described as a 3* because of the distance and undulations, but will be at a 2* pace
Plan is to have lunch in Marlborough, personally I am currently choosing to eat outdoors, so I will probably bring my own food and buy a hot take away drink, I will be happy to wait if others choose to eat in a cafe (Stpeterschurch cafe has been recommended, or if anyone can suggest a cafe with outdoor seating)
This is a pre-bookable ride. To book a place, text your name to the ride leader (07818 041362) no earlier than 9:00am on the Monday before the ride. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained.

Report:
A chilly autumnal ride, but starting with Chain Hill got us warm initially, out towards Farnborough, then took the lanes through Brightwalton to Boxford. Then some little used lanes with green bits growing in the middle and picked up National Cycle route 4 just south of Marsh Benham. Followed the cycleway route through Kintbury, Hungerford and the Bedwyns (where we stopped to put extra layers on, as we'd got a bit cold) then along 3 miles of perfectly straight (but undulating) Grand Avenue through Savernake forest. A very short bit of A4 before taking a bit of cycle track into Marlborough (I admit the cycle track was unplanned, I hadn't spotted that RideWithGPS had routed that way!!). After lunch a fairly direct route home, through Mildenhall and Axford to Ramsbury, then up and over Eastwood to Lambourn, then took the Red Barn route and the the Lecombes for the last bit.
Thanks everyone for their company, hope you enjoyed the ride!

A horrible slog because my tubeless tyre hadn't sealed properly after installing a new tyre and kept gradually going down. It wasn't quite bad enough to make it worth putting a tube in at the time, but maybe that would have been the right answer... Anyway it's fixed now!

But we did ride into a field and lit up an impressive stag in a full on rutting bellow. We proceeded cautiously on the field edge, trying to look as little like another stag as possible. Or a doe for that matter.

There was a short sharp shower just before the ride, but it turned out to be a lovely dry day with no more rain and it was not too windy.
We took the overlooked route over Hatford Downs to the A420. We negotiated this for a short distance and turned off to Littleworth with no problems. I warned everyone to be careful of the road surface and mud through Thrupp treacle mines. Everyone climbed the hill up into Faringdon with no problems and we all got served very quickly at the cafe, where there were already 5 other club members.
After refreshments we set off for Fernham, but just after the A420 crossing we discovered we had lost Ernie. Steph and I rode back to find him, he was still in Faringdon with his bike upside down repairing a rear puncture. I decided for Steph to lead the rest back to Grove and I stayed to assist Ernie. We rode back together after the repair.
Thanks to Steph for taking over the lead and thanks to everyone for a good ride and good company.

First ride after the clocks went back, so it was dark from the start. And it rained in the day, so there were plenty of puddles and wet ground, but no rain at night so it wasn't too bad.

We went up Goddards Brook as we've done most of the other ones recently. (Must do Betterton next time). Then down Ice Valley and up the other side so you know this is a long ride! We circled round West Ilsley and up to the Ridgeway again near the A34. Then done at Harwell round the woods and home via the current Sustrans route - which I guess will be changing soon as the new bridge is installed over Ginge Brook, although not fully connected and open.

20 miles in all on a dark evening is quite a long one!

Leader:
Des Higgs
Start Time:
10:45 am

Description:
This is an event where a destination (usually a cafe) and time is set and riders make their own way to meet with friends to enjoy a socially distanced coffee and chat. This is not a led ride. N.B. The start time above is the time scheduled for meeting at the venue. Make your own way there and back as you wish.

This week's time to meet at Stanford coffee shop is an approximation depending upon how long the led ride ends up being. (Weather dependent)

RIDE CANCELLED - 3* Fifth Saturday Special 3*
Leader:
Richard Pethybridge
Start Time:
9:00 am
Start Location:
Honesty at the Base Cafe, Greenham Common
Description:
RIDE CANCELLED - Sadly the arrival of a classic North Atlantic depression and a strong cold front is going to coincide with the planned time of this ride, bringing 45+ mph winds and heavy rain. Now, I'm as much of a masochist as the next person, but safety is key and so regrettably I am going to have to cancel the ride. I will look to reschedule some other time. - All-day touring ride of 66 miles (106km) with lunch, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. There is 3,500ft (1,066m) of climbing, but also 3,500ft of descent! This is a pre-bookable ride. To book a place, text your name to the ride leader on 07875 456521 no earlier than 9:00am on the Sunday before the ride. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained.
This is a re-run of a ride I led last winter, with a slightly tweaked route. The aim will be to stop for lunch at the Cobbs Farm Shop near Winchester, at slightly over the halfway mark. There won't be a coffee stop, or a tea stop on the way home due to the shortening days and the distance involved.
