Moderate Saturday afternoon ride from Grove
Leader:
Chris Walters
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
A short 50km circuit around the Vale for a couple of hours to blow away the cobwebs and warm up a little! The route is here: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=27493.

No particular hills, so no need to worry about icy downhills!

We can decide on the day whether we do a tea stop at the end.

Report:
On a bitterly cold, but sunny afternoon, 10 riders eager to sweat out mince pies and Christmas pud set off from Grove. Janet left us at Steventon to go home and thaw out, following a warming dash across Cow Common. As we got north of the A420, I'm not quite sure what Brian was on, but he showed us all a clean pair of heels for much of the way back - I reckon Edith has been putting "rocket fuel" into her mince pies this year :-)

By the time we got to Park Lane, the sun was low on the horizon and the temperature dropped pretty noticably. It was a good job we weren't far from home then, as most people were pretty chilled.

In all, a nice paced 50km, the ride details are here: http://connect.garmin.com/player/1690666.

Well done to everyone for this year's first outing!

Report:
Various weather reports for Sunday made for dismal reading. However nine riders turned out and enjoyed a barmy 6 degress with clear skys and a brisk wind. Des volunteered to act as a hare and set off a little early up Chain Hill, due to my role of leading from the rear I don't know if he was caught or not.

Ginny and Sorrel departed after cycling the difficult hills, thank you for attending. Due to the weather over night a large amount of debris had been blown or washed onto the road. Just as I said we may be early for the pub stop Des picked up a puncture, (sorry Des my fault) a few miles later Neil fell to the same fate.

Having tackled all the difficult hills everyone was ready for lunch. This included Richard who has sole claim to being the only Wantage CTC motorist member. Des decided to miss lunch and pushed on back to Wantage. Most cyclists chose the local brew 6X for its hi-energy and protein value, to help with the return leg.

On the re-start there was no time for a gentle warm up,it was a turn right straight up Stag Hill. John found the hills difficult but was weighed down by the large wedge of cheese he had smuggled out of the pub from his ploughmans.

The hill down to Ashbury was a welcome sight and with a few miles back to Wantage, riders peeled off and went their own way.

Well done and thank you to everyone for making my first "lead ride" a success.

Well what a fab day it turned out to be!.......

14 set off on a glorious winter afternoon, with the low sun casting it's long shadows across the surrounding countryside. Luckily the flooding on the road between Denchworth and West Hanney had drained away nicely overnight, so there was no need to carry out the optional detour (Plan B anyone?). A gentle flattish route, with a (shock, horror!)hill climb passing Lains Barn, followed by a gentle descent to Smiths tearooms at Ardington. Steve S wisely decided to make the most of the lovely weather, taking in an extra solo loop of the village, joining us back at the tearooms a few minutes later. A final couple of miles to home, zig-zagging our way through Lockinge, where two cockerels residing at the local racing stables signalled their early morning call, despite it being late afternoon!....

A big welcome to Mandy, Allie, and Jackie, and really nice to see Lorna, Jane and Steve B back out on their bikes.

Thanks everyone for your company!......

Glen S.
