Report:
We headed off at a steady pace in glorious sunshine. Can this really be November?Approaching the railway bridge at Baulking, heard a sharp bang from behind,(It did seem a bit early in the day for fireworks!).On investigation though,it appeared that Robert W had punctured his back tyre quite spectacularly.Luckily he was close to home, and decided to abandon the ride at this point, but met up with us later on at Wantage museum.I decided it might make sense to complete the route(a shortish 30 plus miles)in one, with a tea stop at the very end.Stopped for a water break above Compton Beauchamp, with Steve taking the opportunity to snap some photographs, the Autumn colours were wonderful.Seemed to lose the group a little on the homeward leg.In hindsight,it may have been a good idea to split into faster and slower groups.Dropped down into Sparsholt, climbed out of Childrey, and wound through the Letcombes with the remainder of the group(Thanks for sticking with me!),arriving at the museum in good time for tea and cakes. Thanks everyone for a lovely afternoons cycling.

Report:
Despite the lure of a free lunch plus a bar, there was a similar turnout to last year's AGM with 19 present in total. All 4 sections in the DA were represented by at least 4 active members.

Following an excellent one-page summary presented by Eve, there was a lively debate concerning the implementation of CTC's new policy handbook for local groups. Our thanks to Norman Hayes, CTC Councillor for South-western Region and rider with Corinium CC, for fielding many of our questions. There were a number of issues that he agreed to take away and raise within CTC, in particular the issue of voting rights for members who are active with more than one Section (e.g. Midweek and Wantage for example).

Norman was really there to fill us in on plans for the 2008 Birthday rides at Moreton-in-the-Marsh, which he did towards the end of the meeting. The venue of the Fire Sevices Training College in Moreton-in-the-marsh sounds excellent with some quality en-suite accommodation as well as plenty of room for camping. The plan is to have a range of rides each day with led rides along each of the routes (although all participants will have their own route sheets and can cycle independently if they wish). A number of cycling clubs in the region have already pledged support with organisation including Cheltenham Section, Corinium CC, Evesham Wheelers CC and Southern Wheelers (aka Coventry & South Warwicks CTC).

On the 'DA' committee front, Eve and Steve Q agreed to stay on in their posts of Secretary/Registrar and Treasurer respectively for another year (only). James Dawton was elected to a new post of DA Rights and Planning Officer (which is essentailly the same role as his existing Right-2-ride post). Pat Hurt was also elected as an Ordinary Committee member. Brian H remains our 'DA' rep from our Section committee.

Finally, in line with the recommendations of the new policy handbook, a motion was passed (with 1 abstention) to formally drop the moniker 'District Association' from our Area group name, so that the 'DA' will now be known as CTC Oxfordshire. I'm not quite sure what term we should now use to describe the group formally known as the 'DA'? Area or County perhaps? I guess the term DA may stick for a while.

Regular Wantage Ride - ABANDONNED
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
WMP
Description:
Oxfordshire Cycleway revisited.
A 50-ish mile ride following the route (all on road) of the now neglected cycleway as far as Swinbrook with lunch at the Royal Oak PH in Burford. This will take us along the foot of the Downs to (but not up) White Horse Hill, Uffington, Great Coxwell, Coleshill, Buscot, Langford and Shilton. Returning by a more direct route (probably) through Brize and Bampton, we should be back before dusk - lights recommended just in case we're not.

Report:
With blustery, wet and chilly conditions, it was not a day to be out on the bike. With no let-up in sight, I decided to cancel at 9 and drove into town on the off-chance that someone might have ventured out. Pat was huddled in the entrance to Stead & Simpson, having cycled over from Lambourn - more in hope than expectation?.. We waited until 9:40 and as no-one else turned up, the ride was duly abandonned. A day for the Sunday papers... I'll try to reschedule for sometime next year.

A windy and cold day, Richard was the substitute leader, taking us around the Vale via Denchworth, Charney Bassett, Steventon, Abingdon, Gozzards Ford, Fyfield and then back through Charney Bassett and Denchworth to Grove, where we had a nice cuppa at the Cornerstone cafe. Having already come over from Abingdon and Didcot, Steve Q and Eve abandoned us at Abingdon to fight the cold wind on the way back. New riders Phil (from the Midweek section) and Juliet were welcome additions to the group!

A different evening this week, three of the riders ended up as callers for a specific session, so we had gear pyramids, cadence pyramids, one-legged drills and a 10 minute effort, all interspersed with easier riding, warmups, cooldowns and stretching.

Des showed up for a social half way through, and the cuppa was well deserved by all!
