Riders:Andy PixtonBarry Stanton Bryan Charleston Jan McCabe John Tranter Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Nicole Pethybridge Phil Ward Richard Pethybridge Richard Saunders Roger Postbeschild Simon Atkin Yvonne Bird Riders = 14 Weather:Report:I was scratching my head trying to work out where to go for this ride. And then I remembered a ride my sister had taken me on a few months ago. She knew it as Henk's Ride and we managed to piece it together. Henk a former member of the club who died a few years ago was renowned for his rides apparently and this was one that Angela loves.14 turned up in a busy market place, Andy agreed to sweep (well he mentioned sweeping, that's volunteering isn't it ) And we proceeded to have a very mellow, social ride. The stronger riders were patient with those of us slow up the hills. The countryside was beautiful. The weather windy but not too windy and the right temperature for a bike ride. The Tuti Pole were very organised and we were all sorted quickly, the consensus being that the ice creams were nicer than the cream teas!! Brian knew the route extremely well and saved us from a couple of wrong turnings and an unnecessary hill. He also showed us an historic Cycling Touring Club metal sign on a pretty cottage in the middle of nowhere. As we were paused admiring it, the owners came out and chatted to us. Both former cyclists, they'd bought the sign at auction and it had been on their house for a couple of decades. The lanes to Hungerford from Eastbury, the ride across the Common and the less familiar roads to Brightwalton were all highlights of the ride. Definitely some areas to explore further. Thank you all for being such a great group to lead and for creating a very enjoyable Saturday afternoon. | ||

1* away day - The Oxford Special Series | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Botley shopping centre at the bottom of Cumnor Hil |
Description:A very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside and canalside paths and quiet streets to do a 17 mile 'urban safari' around Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is almost entirely traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Meet in the car park behind the shops at the bottom of Cumnor Hill. Parking here is free for 3 hours, which will be ample. We use the lovely track from North Hinksey to get to Osney Mead, then up the river, across Port Meadow to the canal, up to Wolvercote and then through the exclusive back streets of leafy Summertown until we get to the Marston Ferry Road. Then there is a fascinating series of hidden tracks and roads through to the Brooks campus (including an unexpected manor house), then a swoop down to Florence Park and a final section of beautiful riverside towpath. Some of the tracks will be rough in places, so this is not the ride for carbon super bikes. Mountain bikes would actually work as well as hybrids for this.Free parking in Botley and the chance of a fine coffee stop at Taylor's to finish with. Really interesting - don't miss it! 17 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |

3* Lite Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Description:This is the second in this season's series. The purpose of the 3* lite rides is to give confident 2* riders the chance to try out a 3* ride ride at the lower end of the 3* riding pace. There will be opportunities to experience riding at a faster pace on the flat and to attempt some hills. The atmosphere will be supportive and encouraging and there will be the opportunity to stop for a coffee and a natter at the end. All welcome. Today we'll ride a route similar to a 3* Tuesday evening ride that Andy P led a few weeks ago. It's only 40km but there's 490m of climbing, so plenty of opportunities to practise those hills! We will be taking them at a steady pace and stopping at the top. We ascend the Ridgeway via Court Hill, then wend our way through some pretty West Berkshire villages to climb back up the escarpment before the lovely descent of Chain Hill. Then it's into The Bay Tree Cafe for those who'd like to. |

Riders:Barry StantonClaire Davidson Des Higgs Jane John Jo Little John Groves Jon Townsin Joy Arthur Karen Townsin Karl Blake Riders = 10 Weather:Report:There was a slight chill in the air and therefore the usual arms/no arms discussion took place as 10 riders met at the feet of King Alfred A warm welcome to Clare on her first Cycling UK Wantage ride and hats off to her for choosing a nice hilly one to start with.It was the first ascent of Court Hill this season for some of us, but we took it at our own pace and were soon flying down the A338 towards Wooley, when a sudden hiss signalled a puncture. Waiting at the monument gave us a chance to take some pictures and have a natter, while the pit-stop team did a remarkably quick tube change. The tour of West Berkshire continued, including a small deviation in Leckhamstead to take in the Manor House and views over to Hampshire. Then it was on to Hillgreen, Peasmore and another deviation as we decided to take the route back via Brightwalton rather than toil over the lIsleys. 6 of us then retired to The Bay Tree cafe after finishing with the final swoop down Chain Hill, which was as good as ever. Thanks everyone for an enjoyable ride and to Jon for sweeping duties. | ||

Tuesday Off Road Evening Ride | 2* |

Leader:David Yearley |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:What a ride! It was super windy and very wet from the earlier rain. There were only two of us, and it's hats off to Richard Anstis who rode on a road bike, complete with skinny tyres. That'll teach him to check the website for 4* Road Ride cancellation due to bad weather. Still, you'll not put us muddy pluggers off with a little inclement weather. We did the obligatory climb to the Ridgeway, above Westcot, then along Eastwards with the wind mostly on our backs. Dodging puddles and mud as we went, we then dropped down into Letcombe Regis at Segsbury Camp before heading back home. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:4:00 pm UPDATETonight's 1* ride is CANCELLED due to the high winds and rain. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. *** Tuesday 07:30 ***** UPDATE****** The weather tonight is looking foul. High speed and gusty winds with heavy rain. Please check here or on Facebook for a 16:00 update. ***************************************************** This is a bridging ride at the upper level of the range to allow riders to gauge their pace and gain confidence to step up to the next star level. So, with that in mind, tonight we'll tackle Holborn Hill. We ride from Grove to Wantage and after a very short section on the B4507, we'll quickly turn off onto quieter lanes that take us through Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett. We'll then climb the hill, steep but quite short, before a rewarding descent into Childrey. Then it's back along familiar roads with a very short stretch on the A417, through Goosey, Denchworth and home. A ride of 14 miles and manageable for all. We'll take the hill really steadily and recover at the top for as long as we need. |

So it's a bridging ride and no ones been up White Horse Hill on a Tuesday so far this season - so let's go . Everyone knows how I do not skip up hills, we'll all go up Dragon Hill at our own pace and have lots of time at the top to admire the view. We'll be going via Challow and the unpaved but okay for road bikes, cycle path to Childrey, round to Sparsholt, Westcot and then the spring line road to Dragon Hill. Our return will be via Uffington, Baulking and Goosey. As this is about the hill and not distance this will be a shorter than normal ride to give us plenty of climbing time. |

Off Road Ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Off-road ride on the Ridgeway and the Downs. Lots of beautiful scenery, enough climbing and descending to make it interesting but no major technical challenges and we will take this at a moderate pace equivalent to a 2* road ride.Tea and cake stop at Court Hill after most of the ride (or you could make this your lunch) . The route attached is 23 miles, but I will ask on the day and we can choose shorter or longer versions. |
||
Report:We met under King Alfred for this off-road ride around the Downs. Of course, wherever there are Downs (or downs) there will be ups. But that wouldn't stop the 6 of us!So we started out to the Lambourns and then climbing Gramps Hill . I assured everyone that this was the biggest climb of the day, although it was not the only one, or the trickiest. We then headed West on the Ridgeway into a stong headwind which was a big feature of the first half of the ride. We continued to the B4001 at the top of Hackpen Hill and then turned South to Sheepdrove Farm, then on to rougher rutted tracks to Eastbury Grange. Turning East we now gained a bit of tail wind, but had the most technical climb of the day - steep, rutted and stony. After that, we could see an amazingly bright red field, where poppies intermingled with oats. We continued an undulating path to Whatcombe, then turned North and worked our way to Court Hill Hostel for tea and cake. Or in Richard's case: tea, cake, fish fingers/chips/beans, fanta, squash and probably a few things I have forgotten. Refuelled, we went back to enjoy the 'jolly green giant' descent before returning to Wantage. | ||

Watership Down Reversed | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Woolton Hill nr Newbury - see details below |
Description:Tough 100 km ride with plenty of hills (1200 m climbing) on mostly quiet lanes with fine views of the Hampshire countryside. The ride is based on the Watership Down Audax route but in the reversed (i.e. anti-clockwise direction), and replacing the straight (& rather busy) A272 towards Winchester with a meander along the Test Valley. There are no cafÃᅵ© opportunities much before the proposed lunch stop (at 52 km) - Waitrose Farm Shop CafÃᅵ© on the Leckford Estate, so bring some snacks. After a relaxed after-lunch ride along the Test Valley I'm planning a tea stop at Whitchurch or Laverstoke before the assault on Watership Down itself. It would be useful to have some idea of numbers so please let me know if you are coming by 7 June. Meet at The Chase National Trust Car Park (free), off Station Road, Woolton Hill (https://goo.gl/maps/gFpjhUzQUbG2). Directions from the A34: Driving south past Newbury on the A34, leave at the A343 junction signed 'Highclere, Wash Common'. Turn left at the roundabout signed 'Newbury, Wash Common'. Then 2nd left, signed 'Enborne Row, East Woodhay, Ball Hall' and also for The Furze Bush Inn and The Yew Tree Garden Centre. On crossing under the A34, take the first left into Station Road. The car park is a short way down on the left-hand side. |

Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Smith Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Nick Stokell Pam Stokell Ursula Hallam Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Four couples on a ride plus token gooseberry Louis. Brownie points to him, David and Ursula for riding to the start, and an acknowledgement to Ursula! – I only realised when I got back just now how much of her 2015 route I had borrowed. After a gentle warm up though Kintbury the arm warmers came off and we set off up Walbury Hill and were rewarded by bright sunshine and expansive views to the North. Our passage South showed the Hampshire escarpments (Hart Hill Down, Little Down, Haydown Hill looked very shapely) off to fine effect and even the climbs seemed easier today, punctuated by swooping descents. The terrain became flatter around Andover before the final pre-lunch push on to Longstock. Arrival at 1145 meant a short queue and quick turnaround. Someone discovered they couldn’t use their Waitrose club card ☹ Flat peaceful stretch after lunch (apart from a homicidal motorist and a wasp sting to Ursula), intermittently encountering the River Test. After a sunny tea stop at the ManyDown Bus Café at Laverstoke we set off up the hill towards Watership Down. Pam twisted her knee (dangerous things SPD SLs!) and eventually decided to wait for a rescue helicopter. She was probably a bit disappointed when I turned up in the car. A good day out – I’m a real fan of the Hampshire countryside. | ||

Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs. To mark Bike Week our Easy Saturday ride will be heading northwards to Duxford, the lowest ford on the Thames, where we'll stop for a paddle followed by a picnic. We'll head out via Denchworth and Lyford to Southmoor, cross the A420 on a bridge carrying a bridleway and continue to the beautiful village of Longworth. A short section of rideable bridleway will bring us through to Hinton Waldrist. Here a road drops down into the Thames Valley and Duxford. Riders can rest awhile by the ford and even go for a paddle. There is a short climb back into the Vale from the ford, but this is on a very quiet road (cul de sac) which everyone can take at their own pace. We'll regroup for a picnic tea by the church in Hinton Waldrist. Please bring something to sit and refreshments. We'll return to Grove Via Lamb Lane and Charney Bassett, a round trip of about 20 miles. This is a Bike Week Event and all are welcome including families. As we will be visiting the ford, please note that all children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The ride will be at easy pace following quiet country lanes with no-one left behind. |

Summer Solstice Ride | 3* |

Leader:Jon Townsin |
Start Time:4:00 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:Please note - revised start time! After a year of absence the Summer Solstice madness ride is back! We leave Wantage Market place at 4.00 to get to a viewing point on the Ridgeway to see the sunrise on the (very nearly) longest day at 4.48. From the top of Hackpen we head off south via Lambourn, Ashbury to Chilsledon for a welcome coffee stop. From there we head to Avebury via Broad Hinton to pass the Standing Stones and head south before looping back up via Pewsey and Great Bedwyn to a much needed breakfast at Hungerford. Once refreshed, we head back over the Lambourn valley to get the final reward of a downward excursion of Chain Hill and journey's rest at the Marketplace. This is a big day out with 123 kilometres of cycling and 1300 metres of climbing, so be prepared for 6 - 7 hours in the cycle and a good number (I count eight!) of hills. Lights will be essential and I recommend bringing some snacks to munch whilst we wait for the sunrise. Let me know if you're aiming to join us so we can plan accordingly. |

Riders:Barry StantonEddie Little Jo Little John Tranter Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Richard Saunders Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Wow, es mucho scorcio - at least it was when we finished! What a fantastic ride. Eight brave souls dragged themselves out of bed for a 4.00 am start from Wantage Market place. Strangely enough, it was nearly going home time for some of Wantage's younger specimen. We passed one walking home to Lambourn - twice! The sunrise viewed from the top of Hackpen was spectacular to say the least and the temperature was a gentle 14 degrees - so apart from the early morning flies it was a fantastic start to the ride. Steve travelled with us to Lambourn from where he headed off to Polly's Tea rooms in Marlborough. We meanwhile cycled off up the Ridgeway again and down again to Ashbury and up to Fox Hill and down again (you get the idea) to a welcome coffee stop at Chiseldon. The organisers of the Sunday Sportive had kindly marked out 90% of the route and our Garmins finished off the job by leading us to a very quiet and civilised sojourn at Avebury by 7.30. Eddie and Richard (battling hay fever) shared the King of the mountain while Barry wore the best young rider's jersey (!). Everyone managed the pace of 22.1 kph and the climb of 1,383 metres very well indeed, considering the total length of 122.3 km. A welcome stop at The Tutti Pole in Hungerford for breakfast set us up nicely for the final 30 km back to Wantage. The final pull up the back of the escarpment was a tough section but everyone made it to be rewarded with the final fling down Chain Hill. Joy came out to cheer us on toward the end (that is what you were doing there, wasn't it Joy?!). Well done to all riders and I've booked the weather again for next year ! | ||

Leader:David Yearley |
Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Report:Today was the most perfect day for mountain biking. The trails were dry, the sun was shining and the light was perfect, even in the singletrack woods. We headed out from Grove via Crab Hill to Wantage, and from there via Goddard's Brook up to The Ridgeway above the point-to-point course. Travelling eastwards, with the sun on our backs, we headed towards the Harwell drop. The descent here was fast on the firm, dry ground, and we then continued, finding sneaking woodland singletrack from there towards Steventon. The return trip brought in a nice, fast descent of the Bridge of Doom, before returning to Wantage and Grove. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. This week we'll be heading to Childrey with its picturesque village pond overlooked by thatched cottages. We'll ride out through Denchworth and West Challow before taking a tarmaced bridleway up into Childrey. We'll return via the track to East Challow and a back route via the canal. A round trip of about 11 miles . |

Riders:Ben PaineDavid Paine Ellie Paine Lorna Swanton Nicky Clark Sheena Arnold Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A gentle ride for a very hot evening, and probably unique in that we delivered all riders to their front doors along the way.The main off-road sections also provided us with very welcome shade as the temperatures hovered in the high 20s. Notable too that the canal towpath, apart from one bobbly section at the Wantage end, has become lovely and smooth - an excellent surface for cycling. Unfortunately at present it comes out at the meeting point of 3 building sites (Downsview Park, Letcombe Fields and Stockham Farm) as the westward expansion of Wantage continues... Nice to see Ben out with Ellie and Dave for his first ride this year. See you all next time. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.Led by Jane on her first ride leading effort! A longer ride, but very flat. A good loop around the north and west Vale. We will keep a good steady pace, minimise the stops and see how we can eat up the miles! If all else fails, there are some short cut options. 24 miles / 38km at a good pace of 12-13 mph / 20kph. |

Once the peace of the countryside was restored, after being disturbed by a low flying Chinook stalking us along Northmead Lane, we bowled along at an average speed of 12.2 mph. Once over the A417 we all enjoyed the glorious views of the White Horse from Shellingford onwards. At 24.5 miles this was a slightly longer, but flat 2* ride which was managed comfortably by all the riders. Thank you to everyone for coming along, to Karen for sweeping and to John T (and Simon) for moral support. Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.Enough daylight to attempt John's Boar's Hill route. It's a fairly long one for 3* at 49km but it's well worth it on a bright summer evening. Pretty flat other than the climb to Boar's Hill to look down on the dreaming spires of Oxford. Quiet lanes throughout apart from a short stretch of the A415 and A338 between Marcham and Garford where we normally split into smaller groups. |

Riders:Adrian WestBarry Stanton David Smith David Talboys Des Higgs John Groves Jon Townsin Karl Blake Katherine Boyce Kirsten Smith Nick Dunton Nicole Pethybridge Sharon Bedford Steve Joyce Ursula Hallam Riders = 15 Weather:Report:The ride was a little disconnected at first due to unusually busy traffic getting out through Grove and Denchworth, a wrong turn by the leader just after Denchworth didn't help either. After that the group settled in to a nice rhythm and we made good progress to the top of Boar's Hill. We initially regrouped right at the top but then moved off to admire the view and take photos. The descent from the top was enjoyed by all and the rest of the return journey was assisted by a slight tail wind. Hopefully the ride challenged most people, but was not too challenging for anyone. Description:Weekly, a 2 hours + ride this week, at a riding pace in the region of 27-29km/h (17-19mph). May be hilly, aiming to ease the pace for regroupment rather than stop."Wakey wakey, Rise and shine, (the LONG 4* ride) It's on again..." (Radiohead Webcast 09-11-07 - Faust Arp) highlighted this evening's featured location of Wittenham Clumps recording at their acoustic best on the fabled hills, albeit at dawn. Weather permitting (see below*), we however will thread our way Eastwards in an almost Mid-Summer's evening glow to the atmospheric Bronze Age fortress via gentle lanes, with the prospect of a couple of particularly good hard "pulls" up to the Cholsey Downs and Hagbourne Hill on our return, prior to a pacey run-in along the A417, now becalmed with the falling dew (I'll get my coat...). Fluids, not druids.... Please fuel and clothe for 65km/350m. *FLUIDS essential, 2 bottles sensible... ETA returning via Wantage (8:40pm) to Grove around 8:50pm running at 28kph average.... |

Riders:Frank SchroerJason Jones Louis Hall Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Phil Ward Richard Kembleton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:"The heat is on, on the street"Â ..... Glen Frey (1984), popularised by its use in Beverly Hills Cop came to mind in sweltering conditions as six lined out on the A338 towards Hanney. The Steventon Road proved calmer and enabled compact pairwise riding and conversation as we settled at a steady ~30kph into a welcome cooling headwind drift. Topics under discussion included "how hot does it need to get before you jettison the leg warmers Louis ?"You can make a break, you can win or lose, That's a chance you take, when the heat's on you" 6 became 7 around Steventon after a spirited chase-on to the group by Frank who is leaving it progressively later to join - we'll catch him out one day, but he likes a good work out To enliven the ride further, homage to 617 Squadron was made by sudden and unannounced deployment of bouncing bomb bidons, twice from the ride leader's cage and a further attempt on group harmony by Nick joining in the bottle-dropping game. Needless to say, such hazards were expertly avoided by the 4* crew as we kept excellent pace over the climby portion of the Clumps loop. Turning for home, we picked up pace a little with the help of falling temperatures and a light tailwind. Traffic was light on the A417, but the temporary traffic-lights conspired to split the group on the last stretch into Wantage. No matter, all crew returned safely to base at 8:45pm, slightly up on schedule having averaged 28.7kph. Many thanks all for the smooth completion of a good long summer evening's ride. In particular my appreciation for trialling the "slow, but don't stop on hill tops" mode, from which my data suggests a mere 22 seconds spent stationary (thus avoiding "the sweats" ) on a 2h17 / 65km ride - nice ! Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:At 76.5km, this is a long two-star ride for a Saturday afternoon but is relatively flat (only 381m of climbing) and has only one significant climb (Hagbourne Hill). And, hey, it's almost the longest day, so what else do you want to be doing? It will be run at the usual two-star speed (18-20km/h) and we will re-group at the top of all hills. No one will be left behind! We should be back in Grove by 6.00 p.m. at the latest. There will be a refreshment stop in Abingdon. Note this route uses the cycle path from Harwell Campus to Ginge which is bumpy in places, and can get muddy after rain, but is passable on all but the most delicate road bikes. |

Riders:Barry StantonEddie Little Jane John Jo Little Karl Blake Mike Bailey Nick Dunton Nigel Hughes Phillip Folkes Riders = 9 Weather:Report:A very mellow outing. Welcome to Nigel Hughes on his first CUK ride. Weather was fine throughout, despite the occasional threat of rain. There was a stiff headwind on the return leg which slowed progress a little. Drinks were taken in Abingdon where there was an outside spin-class in the market square rising money for a breast cancer charity: very odd to stop cycling and sit watching other people cycling but getting nowhere. We did a slight detour, taking the cycle path to Wittenham and doubling back on the B4106 to avoid the dangerous right-hand turn on to Sires Hill. Back to Grove around 5.30. My Garmin said average speed 21.0 k.p.h. Just over two-star pace. Chapeau to Barry and Karl, for whom this was just a pipe-opener for the 100 miles tomorrow. | ||

Report:It was a damp start for new rider Ian. When I say new, he's been riding for a fair few years but this was his first time out with us. Or, should I say me, because we were the only two out.Fortunately the rain stayed at a very gentle drizzle for the ride and we managed a full circuit up to the Ridgeway and back. We went out via Crab Hill, Goddards Brook and Bitham Woods. The rain had made some of the roots slippery but we stayed upright. Then cruised East on the Ridgeway with a good tailwind. For the descent we picked the classic Ginge drop, including the twisty side sections. It didn't disappoint! Then on the road past Betterton, through the woods to Ardington and back into Wantage returning on a more slippery version of Crab Hill. | ||

Description:Weekly, a 2+ hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). Confirmation, it IS a HILLY route & with good weather breathtakingly beautiful. Poor weather will provoke adjustment to a shorter option.Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride (lock? £, lights.....) 'Once more unto the breach' & making full use of the extended evening light we head "Over the hills and far away" (Gary Moore 1987 from the Wild Frontier aka Wiltshire, LP) It's a direct line for the county boundary tonight, taking us up and over into a maze of beguiling lanes linking Lambourn, Aldbourne & Bishopstone: 60km with a largesse of climbing (conforming as just about "acceptable" to my rule of thumb: 100m/10km) keeping the option of missing out "Dragon Reverse" if we're feeling cooked prior to ending at the Fox, Denchworth for a well deserved pint . As before, aiming to keeping rolling once over each crest, with an easing of pace for regroupment rather than stop. An efficient group ride ethic should bring us to the quenching sooner (I'm keeping 8:45pm at The Fox as a notional target - that's 27kph all the way round for the hardofmaths. Add 5 mins or so if we launch up the Dragon, 'crying God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' ). 60km / 660m Twiddly gears advised, drinks & a nibble too |

Riders:Carrie KembletonFrank Schroer Jason Jones Phil Ward Richard Anstis Riders = 5 Weather:Report:A recipe for a fabulous ride. Publish your route early, then take three 4* riders and leave OMH promptly. Moisten slightly and warm, within 5km the group will swell to a famous five. Jason “Geo. Formby†Jones was spotted “a leanin’ on a lamppost at the corner of the street, In case a certain little peloton came by†whereas Frank “Runaground†Schroer was in good “Chase you down†form and latched on somewhere on the outskirts of Wantage.A quick check on reaching Lambourn a little after 7pm that we were all having fun returned a consensus to crack on rather than curtail our foray into some of Wiltshire’s finest lanes with grass centre lines, gravelled corners and twisty tree-covered descents. Aldbourne was soon ticked off and we began the drag up towards Foxhill in perfect conditions for some steady conversational pedalling with a light cooling drizzle proving refreshing. Negotiating the rollers around Bishopstone where the tar had previously melted through to create shiny and challenging corners was interesting, however the rattle-clatter-thud of the now habitual “4* throwing of the bottle†brought us abruptly to a halt. Carrie was however not suffering a sense of humour failure, merely a disintegrating bottle cage, the parts of which Richard efficiently reassembled. It was at this point that I happened to notice a substantial D-lock shackled around Carrie’s bike headtube. No, not content with happily pedalling up all the hills chattering to all and sundry, she had even brought along a substantial deadweight to make the exercise worthy – chapeau indeed! I mused at the likely XY carnage should the capable triumvirate of Ruth, Sian and Carrie ever happen to coalesce on a Tuesday evening. We elected to slip along the base of the White Horse rather than labour up the slippery incline into the thick cloud now enshrouding the hill. Strong pulls along the Baulking Road from our Ironman Richard, Frank and Jason brought us almost back on schedule to reach the Fox where a welcome beer and bike-friendly cheer brought the ride to a close. Thanks all for a really satisfying ride – as ever, rain so often merely adds character to a ride whereas wind changes the dynamics. 58.7km; 570m elevation; 26.8kph | ||
