Description:
White Horse Hill or Kingston Lisle. Out through the Vale towards Baulking, we will probably split at the junction with the Kingston Lisle road. The faster/longer ride will continue to Uffington and then climb the hill, while there will be an easier option climbing directly to Kingston Lisle and returning through the springline villages (getting back in time for Ger V Ita for those football fans amongst you).

Woops! Our ride leader turned up in car sans bike at 6:30 to apologise for forgetting to leave work on time... So after a quick consultation, the decision was made to head eastwards, up Lains Barn road to Lockinge and Hendreds, back via Steventon.

Surprisingly given the beautiful evening and the completion of both the World Cup and Wimbledon, there were only 13 of us. So just 1 group (in theory). After the steady climb to Ginge we split before the farm track, with those on road bikes taking the road option through West Hendred and the A417 to East Hendred. Regrouped we turned down Featherbed Lane and then down the hill towards Steventon.

I had decided to do the loop through the village taking the turning before the railway bridge and warned those nearby not to rush ahead. Unfortunately Kevin then swept pass and out of earshot as I started to signal left...
the track itself had deteriorated markedly since we last used it (sorry guys) but brought us through the back of the village along the causeway (delightful).
After waiting for a few minutes at the level crossing, we continued parallel to the Causeway as far as the main road and turned back westwards towards Cow Common. Several of the fast riders then disappeared into the distance in TdF breakaway mode. Returning through the Hanneys and Denchworth we were back at the Square at 8:10 after an enjoyable 20 miles.

Recover from last night's BBQ by joining us on a day ride, heading North West to Northleach; This is a flat-ish 100km with pub stop for lunch at the Red Lion Northleach. Hopefully a stop for a beer on the way back as well.

Not entirely sure how 100K became 120K! Made lunch by 11:55, but then had to wait over an hour for the food. Departed Northleach around 1:45 and headed over some rolling lanes towards Bourton on the Water, swinging back through the Risingtons to Burford where we stopped for ice cream. Returning via Aston we somehow missed the turn for the backroad to Tadpole bridge, and on re-tracing our steps we were denied a beer at the Trout as all day opening seems to have passed them by. After the climb up to Buckland (I had to walk by this stage) we decide on a stop in the services on the A420 and we were all our of fluids. Finally back to Wantage some time after 6pm.

Probably our hottest evening ride ever, with thermometer still hovering near 30 at 6pm. Des led us on a fast but flat ride via Charney Bassett to Fyfield, Netherton and along the "ridge" road to Hinton Waldrist. Then back via Pusey and Stanford. I offered a "breakaway" slower option on several occasions, but no-one took me up on it. By the time we reached Denchworth the idea of a nice cool beer had become irresistable, so most of the group stopped for a quick pint at the Fox. Afterwards, everone said how much they'd enjoyed it.

A small success even if I say so myself. Despite the downpours of the previous night it stayed dry even sunny at times. Venue reasonable although cafe closed. Now I couldn't possibly knock Wantage's randonnuer par excellence, but Pat took Sue and Mavis to the wrong place despite correct name of venue and grid ref! Nice to see Eve and the ladies of Abingdon. More punters required next year as Jan considered it her moral duty to drink any non claimed Pimms. Glad you got home ok. Landis would not have been on stage 17 if he'd had two glasses of this! Many thanks to Ginny for transport and ideas. See you next year, pass the word!
