||
Riders:Angie FisherBarry Stanton David Bridge Des Higgs Louise Bowers Patrick O'Leary Pauline Clark Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Terry Ryland Riders = 10 Report:A very easy ride to lead with no problems. The weather was warm and sunny with a little light breeze so ideal conditions for cycling. Blakes was very busy as usual, but we all got served quickly so no complaints. I kept up a reasonable pace at the front so as to create my own added breeze and everyone kept quite a close formation with gaps left for cars as necessary. The only problem was crossing 'Death's Highway' (A420) which too quite a while.A good ride with good company and excellent coffee. | ||

||
Riders:Angie FisherAnke Otto Chris Marchant David Jackson Des Higgs Gareth Smith Roger Turnbull Val Smith Riders = 8 Report:This ride started with easy pedalling eastwards towards Hanney and then Garford. It felt like the westerly tail wind might make some of the latter parts of the route harder - but that turned out not to be the case and the cycle was not difficult. Roadworks where the lane through Garford joins the A338 blocked the slightly shorter fork onto the A338. And yes - we did cycle past the road closed sign to see if we could get through on our bikes but this was not possible. We had to make the short detour back to the other fork. The short sections on the A338 to Frilford lights and then along the A415 to Marcham passed quickly enough and then we were back to the quieter roads. Crossing the A420 via the tunnel at Tubney and then the bridge at Southmoor removed my usual rider-leader concerns whenever this busy road has to be crossed.Thank you to everyone for a great ride, to Des for sweeping and to Anke for the photo. | ||

Easy sociable ride of 24-32 km (15-20 miles) at a pace of 14-17km/h (9-11 mph).A ride out to Appleton to enjoy the hospitality of their Community Shop. ||
Riders:John TranterLindsey Barker Lorna Swanton Mila Yearley Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Tim Hoyle Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A slightly dodgy weather forecast and a few spots of rain at the start failed to deter a great group, some drawn by their first time experiencing the delights of the Tubney tunnel. We had a few drizzly moments, but overall the weather was kind to us.This was a slightly A420-focussed ride, with four crossings in total, but we were using the best options and the traffic wasn't too bad, so all was well. Appleton Community Shop looked after us extremely well and the umbrella over the seating gave welcome shelter from a brief dizzy moment. A bit of a headwind back, but everyone coped well. The drizzle soon stopped, but the wind did not. Unfortunately, Nick had a mechanical at Goosey junction so he had to abandon and return home, which he did with no further problems. We carried on into the wind with a photo shoot at the Great Barn. When we arrived at Blakes in Coleshill it was crammed full with no seating inside or outside, but fortunately a fellow group of cyclists were just leaving and we had their table.For the return, we decided to do a bit of off-road and took the track through the park coming out by the windmills on the Highworth Road. Oxford Special - Urban Safari away day ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Seacourt Park and Ride, OX2 0HP |
Description:A very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside and canalside paths and quiet streets to do a 20 mile 'urban safari' around Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is almost entirely traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. New this time - the mysteries of Binsey!Parking is at the Seacourt Park and Ride on the Botley Road (bring £2.50 in coins or pay by card). Note there is a 2m height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions. I suggest parking in the newly opened far side of the car park, beyond the waiting room/ticket machine area - plenty of space and a nice car free exit. Note you need to pay within 10 minutes of arrival. We use the separated bike track on Botley Road initially, then we take the fascinating Binsey Lane up into the heart of Port Meadow with the Perch pub and lonely St Margaret's church with its mysterious Treacle Well. This is followed by a track to the Thames at Bossoms Boatyard, across Port Meadow, the canal towpath up to Wolvercote and then through the exclusive back streets of leafy Summertown until we get to the Marston Ferry Road. Then there is a fascinating series of hidden tracks and roads through to the Oxford Brookes University campus (including an unexpected manor house), a swoop down to Florence Park and Iffley Village and a final section of beautiful riverside towpath. Some of the tracks will be a little rough in places, but all bikes should be OK. Optional coffee stop in the new development at Botley to finish. Really interesting - don't miss it! 20 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |
||
Riders:Anke OttoCalum Clark Carin Tranter Diana Whidborne John Tranter Nick Portsmouth Patrick O'Leary Pauline Clark Riders = 8 Weather:Report:A baking hot afternoon, so thanks to those brave enough to join. In the event we were quite often in shade and generating our own breeze, so not too bad. This was a new version of a classic ride, and we started with an exploration of Binsey and in particular the churchyard of the ancient church of St Margaret of Antioch with its mysterious treacle well. We then took a great track across to the Thames and traversed Port Meadow to Jericho before a lovely run north on the canal towpath. Unfortunately in Wolvercote Calum had a bad mechanical problem and decided to limp back to the car. The rest of us explored Summertown, the wonderful Marston Ferry cyclepath and the exclusive quiet roads up the side of Headington Hill. An emergency stop at Oxford Bookes for shade, drinks and ice cream didn't entirely work as the shop's freezer had broken, but it certainly helped! We then headed across South Parks, down past Florence Park to Iffley Village and back along the river paths to the cars.A lot packed into a short ride! Thanks to all for joining me. | ||

Riders:Angie FisherDavid Bridge Louise Bowers Mike Bailey Patrick O'Leary Roger Turnbull Stephanie Haddrell Terry Ryland Riders = 8 Report:A breezy morning with sunny periods which was lovely after yesterdays grim day! With 9 riders starting out we headed to Denchworth, where we stopped briefly to catch our breath at which point Patrick explained that his e bike was not charging and he would be leaving the ride. We then continued to West Hanney via a brief stretch on the A417. As we approached the pathto Childrey we met a family with 2 dogs just leaving the path and had a clear run into Childrey where we were greeted by 2 horses,( and riders) our timing couldnt have been better!It was then time for the hill of the day which was not helped by the headwind, so we tackled it at our own pace regrouping at the foot of Hackpen Hill. We then enjoyed the descent into Letcombe Basstett and a brief tail wind as we left towards Letcombe Regis and onto Wantage. Avoiding the main road as much as possible we went via Locks Lane, Portway and then along Trinder road and Springfield road to the path into Lockinge. Our planned route to Ginge was not possible due to road closures and so we skirted back to Ardington for an early and leisurely coffee, and were greeted by Patrick! A pleasant social with coffee and cake was welcome after the winds and hills. As we finished, the active travel group descended on the cafe led by John Tranter!. We then made our way back to OMH via Laines Barn. Roger David and Mike all opted to make their own way home from the cafe. A lovely morning thanks all for your company. | ||

Start Location:OMH |
Description:Plan to ride out to Ardington….to include a picnic stop. Original plan to take a bit of a circuitous route via Denchworth, West Challow and Childrey before East Challow, and a cunning back route in Wantage to route 44 to Lockinge. Picnic stop at Ardington (bring your own refreshments 😎 and saves worrying about cafe opening times) and to locate those Millennium Stones. Plus, the weather will be great (😮) won’t it?Planned total of 18 to 20 miles……ish Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting). Please let the ride leader know if you are planning to come. |

Therefore we went across to East Challow, and then continued on the original planned route. Lovely leisure picnic on the grass by the wood with the "Millennium Stones. Weather glorious so was an extra long "tea" stop. Steve S then left us to get back earlier, and many took the opportunity to walk in to the woods to see more of the stones. Adjusted the route back so we went via Wantage - cutting through one of the new estates - and some then went directly home. In consequence, the ride was shorter than planned., but a lovely afternoon. Well done to Bessy!, doing very well with the ride. Warm welcome to Huw on his second ride with us. Thanks to all for a nice relaxed ride. | ||

Not suitable for irregular riders.PLEASE NOTE 8.30am START - SO PLENTY OF TIME FOR CAFE STOPS I haven't been south of Hungerford to Chute Causeway for sometime - so decided it was time to do so. It is quite a challenging ride but hopefully as it is August we should be getting towards being cycling fit. We will have a coffee stop at Honesty in Inkpen and then a lunch stop at the cafe at Great Bedwyn. |

The conditions were great - beautiful sunshine but not too hot - and that made the views spectacular. Was a hilly route with about 1,200m of climbing but all the group tackled the hills with great energy.The food in the cafe stops was great - but service was a little slow and at Wendy's somewhat random, (over an hour between the first and last sandwich emerging - and John was so hungry he ate his dessert first!). But we took it in our stride and just chatted in the glorious sunshine. Thanks everyone for joining me on what I think must be one of my top local(ish) routes. | ||

We headed around Wantage and out on the Icknield Way past Lockinge and Ginge before the one big climb up to the Ridgeway. Everyone managed this well, although clearly electric assistance was helpful for some! We took some nice photos as the sun dipped and explored the rather scrappy mound which is Scutchamer Knob - an Iron Age round barrow which is the subject of a few legends from Anglo-Saxon times, but was also used as a marketplace for trading goods in medieval times. We then enjoyed the big descent, headed back along the Icknield Way to Ardington, over Lains Barn road and home just as the sun was setting.Thanks to all for joining me - a nice ride on a lovely evening. | ||

Report:This was a ride of two halves & multiple surfaces.The first part of the ride consisted of riding along the Wilts & Berks Canal, Grove to West Challow, which made for a lovely ride. We then joined the Ridgeway at Sparsholt Firs, following the Ridgeway via Old Street out as far as Scutchamer Knob.This is where we left the Ridgeway, descending to our refreshment stop at Chilton Garden Centre. The service, food & drinks were excellent. The garden centre is now owned by British Garden Centres, & has been completely refurbished along with a brand new restaurant. Once we were refreshed, we then followed the Icknield Way back home via Lockinge to Wantage. The Ridgeway wasn’t too busy though it was nice to see cyclists & walkers of all ages enjoying this beautiful & ancient trail, along with some spectacular views. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). A route I haven't used for a few years, but one of the most fascinating and cunning ways to get into the centre of Oxford almost entirely on off-road tracks. We head across the Vale for Appleton and Cumnor, down Cumnor Hill before hitting the back roads and trails to get us to the river by Osney. A lovely river crossing before we hit the centre of town. Coffee stop with the opportunity to see inside my old College, St Cross. Then we head north out of town on the canal towpath to Wolvercote, loop around Port Meadow and head for home. I'm excited about bringing this one back. 41 miles / 65km at a nice steady 2* pace. |

We had a good tailwind over to Oxford and then we explored the back tracks of west Oxford and the river before popping up in the centre of town. Greens cafe provided excellent coffee and cakes which we enjoyed in the quiet Blackwell Quad of St Cross College. Then we headed north on the Oxford Canal to Wolvercote and Port Meadow before conquering Cumnor Hill and heading for home.Thanks to all for a really fun morning! | ||

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Southampton |
Description:THE RIDE IS NOW FULL. Please contact me if you want to go on a waiting list in case anyone drops out.The annual IoW club special. This year we have a few deviations from the traditional route round the island. including starting from East Cowes using the 8am ferry from Southampton. As ever it is quite a tough route being approx. 105k with lots of ups and downs, (approx. 1,200m of climbing in total). Parking: https://www.southampton.gov.uk/travel-transport/find-and-plan/find-parking/cruise-parking/ I have been advised that the best parking is Eastgate Street Multi-storey, Southampton, SO14 3HB, UK, and is a maximum of £9 a day. It is a short ride to Terminal 1. Please be there at least three quarters of an hour before to allow time to park, assemble, get to the terminal and board. I would strongly suggest you book your tickets via https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/faqs#booking as soon as possible (£23 return in advance), once you have checked there is a place on the ride. When you book you have to include a return ferry time. Please select 17.30 - albeit that it is usually possible to change this which will give us some flexibility. Most past participants have chosen to have breakfast on the ferry (or bring your own) and this makes sense as the plan is not to have a formal cafe stop until a mid morning type stop in Freshwater. The new starting point puts the Bembridge cafe lunch will be at Newchurch (72k). We are hoping to identify a replacement for an ice cream at the beach in Cowes near the return ferry point but can’t guarantee it I’m afraid. Please let me know if you intend to join. The ride has filled up quickly in prior years. For safety the ride will be limited in numbers to around 12 riders at the ride leaders discretion after assessing forecast etc. |

The successful changes were to use the cycle path from Yarmouth to Freshwater and picking up part of the Squirrel Line at Newchurch to allow access to the rather splendid Pedallers Cafe. Also successful was splitting into 2 groups and keeping about 5 minutes between us. Interesting was Katherine taking her group across the Causeway at Bembridge! Once again the Round the Island route at Ryde was narrow and uncomfortably busy. Definitely one to avoid next year.All-in-all a very successful trip: thanks to Sharon for leading the first group and everyone for being such a great group to be out with for the day | ||
