Leader:Stephanie Haddrell |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:With the absence of any families signed up for the short route we adopted plan B, A 29 mile ride out to Blakes for coffee.Heading out via Denchworth and Charney to Hatford and on to Littleworth, Radcot and Canfield for coffee. Returning via Bampton Buckland and Charney. |
||
Report:A short family ride was planned but with only experienced riders signed up plan B was employed.A lovely ride out to a favourite coffee destination Blakes at Clanfield. The day was fine if a little overcast although the company was bright! Des and Karl had their matching kits on to delight all. We headed out to Denchworth on to Charney and Hatford before climbing to the A420 where we tuned left for a brief period before turning right into Littleworth. Thanks Roger for leading the first group and slowing the traffic for us, great job! A beautiful ride through the village, and the pleasure of a wonderful decent towards the Thames, a proper 'weeee hill' Turning right towards Clanfield we were on the road to coffee and life was good. The coffee and bun did not disappoint me, David enjoyed his Scotch egg and Susan recommends the vegatarian rolls. Des and Karl were just grumpy! Having been fully re- fuelled we made our way to Bampton and up the Hill from the Trout to Buckland. A quick rest and chat and we were on the home stretch Via Charney and Denchworth. Great ride for Susan the longest in a long while and set a good pace. A thoroughly enjoyable ride with great company, thanks to all. | ||

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Bailey Eddie Little Jo Little John Groves Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Lizzie Hardingham Paul Bentley Sharon Bedford Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Blue skies + a gentle breeze + ten cyclists = the perfect combination for a morning’s ride. We split into two groups with a ten minute gap which kept the two groups nicely apart making it safe for all road users! Everyone enjoyed the beautiful scenery through the Vale & The Lambourn Valley. It was very nice to see Jenny & Terry en route. We encountered a number of groups of horse riders who all appreciated our courtesy in slowing down for them.Both groups arrived at Saddleback Farm within 15 minutes of each other. We said goodbye to Sharon as she was heading off on her hols that afternoon. We were all rewarded with a scrumptious range of fresh strawberry & fruit tarts & other treats Service was fast & efficient along with plenty of seating inside & outside. As we all tucked into our cakes we were rewarded with a fantastic view of a herd of fallow deer which made the perfect setting for our tea stop Once we were all refreshed we all headed for Chain Hill to enjoy the decent into Wantage which is always satisfying A big thank you to you all from Jo & myself for being such nice groups to lead & for being such excellent company. Riders:David JacksonDes Higgs Diana Whidborne Ian Shipton Karl Blake Marion Shipton Roger Postbeschild Sally Bensoussis Sarah Lewis Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Susie Turnbull Riders = 12 Report:A beautiful day for a lovely ride, clear blue skies, little wind and a gathering of happy cyclists. With 12 riders we split into two groups riding out through Denchworth, and Charney Basset towards Shellingford.As is becoming customary leader Steph had a minor mechanical with a slipping seat thanks David for sorting this. As Susie's group had surged ahead we made haste, eventually catching sight of them in Shrivenham. On through Bourton we were further fuelled up the hills by the thought of coffee and cake at Ashbury. A lovely place to stop for a chat, we enjoyed our refreshments and great coffee, which all enjoyed. The only disappointment was that they have stopped selling almond croissants,! As we left Ashbury along the springline we were spoilt with great views of the vale in bright sunshine, and grateful that the return journey was mainly down hill with a tail wind. The hill from Knighton was such fun. Sarah Lewis was flyng at this stage with the thought of cocktails and barbeque awaiting her and we sped home with ease. A great ride and a lovely route thank you Susie Turnbull for the addition to our 2* programme. | ||

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Monday before the ride. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.This is a real classic on some rarely used little roads down into the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Park Lane to Stanford in the Vale, then to Hatford and a tiny road to the north. Then a quick dash down a short section of the A420 to Littleworth is rewarded by a dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Clanfield, along to Bampton and a great tea stop at Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes around Shifford and to the Thames at Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett. 40 miles / 64km |

A good group of 10 assembled and I was thankful to Steve S for leading a second group on the road. All went according to plan and we enjoyed the usual good service and great cake at Aston Pottery.It is always fun to head into what feels like the middle of nowhere at Shifford and then to go down to the river by the mysterious village of Chimney. Sadly, group two had some mechanical problems and had to head for home and miss out the river detour. The climb of Buckland Hill was dispatched efficiently and after exploring the back streets of Buckland village we headed for home. Thanks to all for your great company! It was lovely to see Mila, Karen and a new member Brendan. Steph a group of Julie, Ian, Brendan, Mila and David, heading out of Grove through mains St and along the cycle path to Charlton heights. The ride was one of various cycle paths some of which had gravel surfaces, and required care on a road bike. We headed to Lockinge via the track from the Nelson and on to Ginge past Best Mate and the Rhinocerous. We the picked up the cycle path to Hendred enjoying a descent into the village and admiring the carved owls as we went. Then past the brook and onto the path beside the school to cut across back to the Ginge road. As we picked up the cycle path towards the Bridge of Doom Davcid on his gravel bike led the way and we were delighted that all manoeuvered the technical challenge with style; and styeve was waiting with the 1* riders taking photographic evidence! After a brief stop and catch up we continued along the footpath to Ardington, and then headed out of the village up the road to the A417 and then down past Laines Barn home to Grove. It was great to see John Groves out for the first time in ages, we missed you John! We road a familiar route back to front, out through Denchworth and Goosey, towards Baulking and up Kingston Lisle Hill. There were some amazing multi coloured poppies in the verge from Baulking a real picture! The hard work done we were cruising to coffee, along thespringline to Westcott and Sparsholt to Childrey., where the birthday boy (Roger Posthebechild was waiting for us! Nice too to bump into Lizzie Long. After a very relaxed coffee and scrumptious cake with the usual chat we headed home, back along the footpath to West Challow, through Denchwoth and home. 1* Saturday Afternoon Ride - Saddle Up to Saddleback | 1* |
---|
Leader:Nick Portsmouth |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Leckhampstead Village Hall |
Description:This is a pre-bookable ride only. To book your place please text the ride leader no sooner than the Monday before the ride. Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.This is a repeat of a ride I lead in August 2019 which gives 1* riders a chance to visit the Saddleback Farm Shop Cafe. This is a slightly hillier than usual 1* ride, but will be taken at a leisurely pace with no rush and plenty of time to take in our wonderful surroundings. Meet at the village hall car park in Leckhampstead (RG20 8QJ), opposite the former The Stag PH. The ride will follow a clockwise route visiting the villages of Chaddleworth, Brightwalton, Farnborough and Peasmore with a short detour to see a CTC-winged wheel. A total distance of about 16 miles. |
||
Riders:Diana WhidborneJan McCabe John Tranter Karl Blake Lorna Swanton Nick Portsmouth Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Including 1 rider who cycled to the start (Steve), 7 riders set off from Leckhampstead Village Hall and headed South to visit a house owned by club members which has an old style CTC "Winged Wheel" sign attached (a similar one can be found in Wantage Market Square).After the team photo, we retraced our steps and headed towards RAF Welford. We then cycled on through Chaddleworth, passing the pub once owned by Desert Orchid's jockey, and Brightwalton. At Brightwalton, there was an option to cut the ride short and head off to the tea stop but we carried on and headed down to Woolley with a magnificent view of Woolley House on the way (the memorial on the road between Wantage and Great Shefford is in memory of a former resident of this house). At this point the route became more undulating and we carried on through the village of Farnborough to our tea stop at Saddleworth Farm. Suitably refreshed, we headed South to Lilley & Peasemore, After Peasemore, the ride was completed by crossing the Wantage/Newbury road again and arriving back at the village hall. Steve then continued his ride back home. | ||

Report:OK, I confess it wasn't the greatest of route choices tonight.It started off ok, up Lark Hill, a good solid climb and then turning right for a little descent before climbing again in the field next to the A338 and heading back half way to Chain Hill before peeling off for the Moonlight Barn trail. This trail is where our 'overgrown with nettles' theme started however. Never mind I thought, the water tower section will make up for it. How wrong I was. Even more nettles! We did eventually emerge, apply some dock leaves, and spin round the Harwell woods before returning along the Sustrans route to Wantage. There to stop at the King Alfred in the Market Square and listen out for occasional football related cheers while diluting the stings with a rather nice IPA. | ||

Riders:David JacksonDes Higgs Eddie Little Julie Haynes Karen Bunting Karl Blake Sally Bensoussis Sarah Lewis Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 9 Report:A lovely day for a ride, warm little wind and great company. We headed out from Grove via Denchworth and on to Goosey Fernham and Little Coxwell. After crossing the A420 we went on to Great Coxwell and stopped at the Barn for a brief respite a minor hiccup as Sally had a puncture. This provided the perfect opportunity for some photos and appreciation of the Great Barn, whist Eddie and Karl worked their magic. refreshed we climbed the hill to Badbury clumps and enjoyed the descent to Coleshill. Taking the school lane across to Buscot, Des suggested we call into Jason Donovan's for coffee so we were disappointed to see him out on his bike!We then headed on to Lechlade, Little Faringdon arriving at our coffee destination in Filkins just before 12. Great to see Jan and Paul McCabe there to meet us. Having smelt bacon and chips on our journey past the Trout, we were disappointed that they were not serving lunch, just cake and cheese scones. Nevertheless we enjoyed a break, some great cakes and scones, a chat and a wander before our return journey, through Clanfield, Bampton and Buckland, Charney Basset and home. Midsummer Ride to Avebury | 3* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:4:15 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:23/6 This the second of our midsummer rides rescheduled from last weekend. Forecast is looking a lot better although cloudy in the early hours. Categorised as 3* due to the distance, hilliness and off-road sections, the ride will be ridden at a steady 2* pace. The group will be a maximum of 8 people. Please get in touch if you would like to join those of us carried over from last weekend.16/6 A slight change of route to avoid a rutted section of the Ridgeway above Avebury. The ride will be a few miles longer but with less off-road than originally planned. Route details below have been amended accordingly. The return of a classic touring ride after a gap of 10 years. A hilly ride of about 65 miles through the early morning over the Wessex Downs to the World Heritage Site at Avebury at midsummer, taking in some beautiful (but non-technical) off-road on the gallops above Manton to the Fyfield Down National Nature Reserve before dropping down into the Kennet valley. We’ll make use of the excellent Marlborough-Swindon railway path (Sustrans route 482) to Chiseldon on our return. Expect about 11 miles of off-road in total. Starting in the dark at 4:10am (lights required), we'll climb Hackpen Hill to see the sunrise over the Vale at 4:47am. We'll drop down into Lambourn and continue via Baydon to Aldbourne for an early morning refreshment stop on the green. We’ll climb steadily over Snap before an exhilarating, sharp descent into the Ogbourne Valley. After a few miles on the A346 to Ogbourne Maizey, we zig-zag across to Barton Down to pick up the off-road track along the gallops. This continues to historic Fyfield Down where the ground is littered with sarsen stones. We will turn south and descend first on a wide track then minor road to Manton (3.6 miles of-road) and gradually climb to the top of the hill above East Kennet with views towards Avebury and prehistoric Silbury Hill. After a short stretch of the A4, we’ll approach Avebury along Stone Avenue, running alongside the mile long avenue of standing stones. Once in Avebury, we will have the opportunity to explore the stone circle, before continuing along the Kennet valley to Marlborough for breakfast at Eliane’s, which opens at 9:00am. On the way into Marlborough, we’ll take a ½ mile off-road section (on Sustrans Route 403) to pass the Marlborough White Horse. We return via the railway path as far as Chiselden (6.7 miles) and then follow the foot of the Downs via Foxhill and Bishopstone back to Wantage, returning about 1pm. Please bring refreshments to keep yourself going through the early hours until breakfast and ensure that you have enough layers to keep warm on early morning descents. Off-road bikes NOT essential - a steel-framed touring bike is more suited to enjoying the mix of terrain. |
||
Report:Just two of us for the rescheduled Avebury ride. We decided to ride out through the Letcombes with John and Richard, picking up Sharon en route to the top of Hackpen Hill. Sadly, there was no sunrise through the overcast sky, but the birds were singing."Have a good ride", we wished each other before heading our different ways. We dropped into Lambourn and were soon climbing out towards Baydon Road which follows the line of Roman Ermin Street. At Baydon, we agreed to continue along the Roman Road to enjoy the views before turning off to Aldbourne. The land was green and the misty sky grey - all very atmospheric and eerily beautiful. Arriving in Aldbourne we rode up to the church and enjoyed an early morning refreshment stop with a fine view over the village green. A few drops of rain as we started to depart, grew heavier as we started the climb up to Snap before easing to a gentle mizzle for the next hour or so. We crossed the Ridgeway and flew down the descent into Ogbourne St George and appreciated the relative quietness of the A346 before turning off to Ogbourne Maizey. Another climb through a holloway brought us to a viewpoint over the Downs, which were hemmed in by misty cloud. We dropped down to Manton Park and picked up the track following the gallops up to Clatford Down. A different feel in mizzly conditions to the open blue skies I had enjoyed on my recent recce this way. We turned down the off-road NCN 403 into Manton (we must have just missed the other group passing this way towards Marlborough) to pick up the Kennett valley road that runs through the villages south of the A4. At Lockeridge, we continued up the valley before turning up Lurkeley Hill. Sadly just misty views from the top. We descended through East Kennet to the A4 and approached Avebury along Stone Avenue - always atmospheric, whatever the conditions. Once in the village, we took the opportunity for a photo stop and a brief walk among the standing stones before retracing our steps to East Kennett and back to Marlborough. Eliane's was just opening up and we enjoyed a slightly different breakfast - sauteed aubergine and potato for me, scrambled egg followed by a large serving of cake for Robin. The ride back to Wantage via the (excellent) railway path to Chiseldon the along the foot of the Downs via Fox Hill and Bishopstone was uneventful if taxing on weary muscles. We were back in Wantage before lunch. Not quite midsummer conditions, but an enjoyable ride and great to retread an old favourite route. Thanks Robin for your company. | ||

Report:Much thanks is due to Katherine for creating a really great route for this ride - one to store away and use again. The weather was very overcast so we sadly didn't see the sunrise - the clouds just got a bit lighter!But it was a great ride to Avebury - always useful to be on the roads so early, it reminded us of Lockdown #1. A bit misty and moisty in places, but on the whole we stayed dry. The back road to Marlborough was lovely, although we opted out of the rough track past the White Horse. Our arrival in Marlborough at 07.30 precisely coincided with Cafe Nero opening and they made us very welcome. As a result we decided on a one stop strategy. The rest of the ride was great and we finished off with the usual fun swoop down Chain Hill as everyone peeled off for home. 72 miles and home before lunch! Thanks to Richard and Sharon for great company. | ||

Report:A very pleasant evening for a ride over the Ridgeway. There were a total of ten riders on the two 2* rides which were combined. The soccer match between England and Germany in the European Cup was ongoing at the time we set off. This may have reduced the numbers of riders but those partaking were able to enjoy the noticeably quieter roads.We were caught up by the 3* ride in Letcombe Bassett. Maybe our departure via the "1* route" along Brereton drive followed by only a short wait at the temporary lights at the Denchworth Road junction had helped us. Our 2* stop at the top of Holborn Hill then allowed the 3* riders to push ahead. We were also treated to some low flying by a microlight plane at the bottom of Hackpen Hill. Despite earlier forecasts the weather during the ride was good and we were able to enjoy the views. The seven barrows route is one of my favourites and it was again a pleasure to cycle. | ||
