Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Chris Walters |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:71km hilly ride, with a tea stop at the garden centre in Blewbury, riding pace of 20-22km/h (13-14mph).Starting with Chain Hill, we head over the Downs to Streatley (down the infamous hill) to the second part of the ride which is fortunately flatter, taking us up towards Wallingford and home along the A417. And there are no references to Star Wars Day, either! |

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Walters David Smith David Talboys Frank Schroer John Talbot John Tranter Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Mark Shepley Mike Biss Phil Stubbings Stephen Quartermain Ursula Hallam Riders = 14 Weather:Report:We started off with 15, but an ailing David B was beaten by his bike malfunctioning in Wantage before Chain Hill had a chance to inflict its' damage - a record for shortest CTC Wantage ride?The remaining peloton ascended and swooped at varying speeds as we cut across the Downs and then down Streatley Hill, warming up brake blocks. The wind that had become an inconvenience gradually turned into a bother as we started to head westwards, cutting off a corner of the intended route to allow for the hard return leg. Hard it was. It's really important to keep the group close in such conditions, and some time we succeeded and at others the stronger riders just rode off the front, leaving others to struggle. Tea was taken at the Blewbury Garden Centre cafe - always a good experience. Then came the final slog back to Grove into the headwind. Respect to those who a) took turns into the wind and b) ensured that they protected the riders behind them! | ||

Wallingford Cycle Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:John Talbot |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Place |
Description:25 miles West of Wallingford to the Wittenhams, Didcot and the Hagbournes. Tea in Blewbury.We will be following the Sustainable Wallingford routes west of Wallingford. A PDF Leaflet describing the route is available. Two hills to be aware of, over Wittenham Clumps and up Hagbourne Hill. We will stop at Savages in Blewbury for tea and cake. Wallingford is a great place for a bike ride, but has not recently had many rides for the local leisure cyclist. To put this right, CTC Oxfordshire has organised a series of 5 rides for the Wallingford cycling community over the spring and summer. These are based on the popular format of 25 to 40 miles on a Sunday afternoon with a stop for tea and cake. Even if you haven’t done much cycling recently, 25 miles can be surprisingly easy to cover with good company and a suitable refreshment half way. These rides will be at at sociable rather than sporty pace, about 11-13 mph on the road. Some hills are inevitable, but they will be kept to a few. The rides will be led by experienced leaders, and follow CTC guidelines to be safe and enjoyable for everyone. Non-CTC members are welcome, but we ask that you join the CTC if you intend to ride more than 5 times with us. The rides will start from Wallingford Market Place, just outside the Tourist Information Centre at 1:30pm on the first Sunday of each month. (The nearby Goldsmiths Lane car park is currently free on Sundays.) They will normally arrive back at 4:30 to 5pm. The exception will be 7th July, which will be a ‘picnic ride’ starting about 10am to coincide with the Benson Veteran Cycle Club Rally, and returning mid-afternoon. (Thanks to CTC Wantage for hosting this page while the CTC Oxfordshire website is being redeveloped.) |

Riders:Alice RobsonBrian Hipwell Jasmine Talbot John Talbot Steve Swanton Tracey Talbot Riders = 6 Weather:Report:A very successful start to the Wallingford rides. We had 15 riders (regular CTC Wantage riders listed to the left at the moment) and lots of enthusiasm for organised rides from Wallingford.We followed the route as planned to Upton and as the teashop shuts at 4pm we went straight to Blewbury where we enjoyed a relaxing stop in the sunshine eating cake and drinking tea. Whilst we were stopped a sudden hiss of air heralded the only mechanical incident of the ride. If you are going to have a puncture the best place is when the bike is leant up against a teashop!! We went back to Wallingford via Blewbury, Aston Upthorpe and a circuit around Aston Tirrold for the fun of it! Great afternoon out on the bikes. Roll on the next one!! | ||

Tuesday Evening Off-road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:David Brown |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know.Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any 2. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. |
||
Report:A group of six braved sunshine, light breeze and mild tempratures to find a new off-road route to the Fox.Following the route of the canal we headed west until we reached the far side of East Challow where we turned up Cornhill Lane. It was then right at the top along the B4507 to avoid the very rutted section of Green Road before cutting left onto the byway to Letcombe Regis. Sights were then set on the Ridgeway, with Castle Hill being the climb of choice today. A brief pause at the top to admire the view (...OK, to catch our breath and recover) we continued along the Ridgeway for about a kilometre before zipping off to the right for a loop around Parsonagehill Barn/Flint Farm. Rejoining the Ridgeway at the top of Gramp's Hill we chased the sun as it started to set, crossing over the Lambourn road and continuing on the Ridgeway the other side. At the cross roads of byways we turned left down a fantastic chalky descent across Sparshold Field, then on the road via Westcot, Sparsholt and Childrey, down the bridleway to West Challow, then road back to Denchworth with a customary sprint finish to the Fox. Key ride stats: Puncutes - 1 Puddles -1 Pints - Plenty | ||

Some of us mentioned that adding on Hackpen and/or Dragon Hill to the end of the route would turn it into a real local good hill work-out - another time ? The sunshine made this a glorious evening to be out on the bike and everyone took their own pace on the climbs - making for an average of the ride in between the advertised speeds for a 3 star ride. Well done to everyone that came on the ride. | ||

Saturday morning off-road ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Goring, Manor Road (see URL) |
Description:From Goring we'll climb and head in a not very straight line to Woodcote, then south-east and back parallel to the Thames. Lots of singletrack in the woods, some of which may still be wet. Moderate hills, nothing massive or scary.About 20 miles at a moderate pace. Optional pub stop afterwards. A well-maintained mountain bike with knobbly tyres is required. Preferably, let Robin know if you are coming in case the ride needs to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, and so we can organise sharing of cars. |
||
Report:Our season of monthly MTB rides got off to a great start. The route I picked has lots of woody singletrack, reasonably gentle climbs and a couple of exhilarating descents. And the weather was kind – the recent mix of dry and rain left the trails firm-packed, with only small patches of mud. We had sunny spells, and the clouds that started building through the ride could only manage a few sprinkles of rain until we were safely back.Five of us assembled in a quiet road in Goring, and we set off just after 10am. After a mile of quiet track, the trail climbed up a hill to overlook the Thames. Then it was into the woods for a first twisty singletrack section and down a somewhat muddy/rocky path/gully. We winched ourselves back up more slowly and after a road section it was down another slope and back into the woods. Lots of bluebells here, and we decided to take a photo – just as I noticed my back tyre getting flat. So we have photos attached of everyone else having fun riding through the woods, or playing on the log pile, while I changed my tube! All was sorted quickly enough and we made our way to Woodcote, then back into the woods for some fantastic trails. Mostly slightly downhill, twisting between the trees with extra challenge from roots, overhanging branches and muddy patches. It split neatly into 5 sections so we regrouped after each. After that, it was a couple of miles on the road to Path Hill and a fast track down the slope, with a nice zigzag to test grip and nerve at the bottom. Then along to Whitchurch and the final off-road section along the Thames Path. As Richard noted, you need to pedal, but the pedalling was well rewarded. And talking of rewards, 3 of us headed into the Catherine Wheel for some liquid reward for our efforts! | ||

New Forest Tour | 2* |

Leader:Chris Walters |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Cadnam - Sir John Barleycorn pub |
Description:All-day Sunday ride through the New Forest. 80km at 2* pace.Taking in the delights of Beaulieu (possible coffee stop), Brockenhurst, the Bolderwood ornamental drive, we will lunch at the Red Shoot in at Linwood before heading back up a couple of steady climbs before meandering back to Cadnam. All 2* riders should be able to complete this ride, it's a good distance, but nothing too hard, and the final hour is quite and easy finish. We will ride to accommodate the slowest rider. Please let Chris know if you intend to come - the ride will not run without support. |
||
Riders:Chris WaltersDavid Talboys Jasmine Talbot John Talbot Michael Tayler Nicole Pethybridge Paul Watson Steve Burr Riders = 8 Weather:Report:The day started well enough - a bit of wind and the threat of a little rain in the early afternoon. An hour of threading our way down the quiet lanes to Beaulieu rewarded us with a delightful coffee stop, and some of the best Belgian buns seen this side of the Ardennes. After coffee, we encountered the first bits of headwind down into Brockenhurst and then over the Rheinfield Arboretum road, before the road kicked up on the first climb of the day up the Bolderwood Ornamental Drive (sounds quaint!).Sadly the ride leader (me) found out quite quickly that his chest infection had not gone away, and any kind of climbing was done at a snails pace and with very heavy breathing. At the top of what is normally a lovely climb, the leadership was handed over and a breathless former leader limped back downhill to Cadnam and an early bath. Substitute ride leader John takes up the story.... We were a few km from lunch when Chris left us but those were exposed and into the wind. We were ready for food at the Inn and we arrived before the rush but had to sit outside which was chilly. All the tables inside were reserved yet no one was sitting at them when we left! Food arrived quickly and was consumed pretty quickly too! It was great to have the wind at our backs for the return leg although we had a few climbs to negotiate. It also started raining, nothing too heavy but we needed to don waterproofs. I encouraged Jasmine up the hills, she was ready to walk on the last steep one but she pedalled them all! She led us across the heathland on the B3078 from Godshill and kept us at a nice pace. The usually fun descent through Bramshaw Wood was taken more gingerly with wet and greasy roads and Steve discovered that brakes don't work as well in the wet and nearly had a pile up with Nicole at the bottom! The final stretch was very pleasant and we were soon back at the cars at 3.30pm, pretty close to expected arrival. It was never my intention to lead! I had half planned to cut back to the car from the lunchstop with Jasmine as I was unsure how she would do for pace and climbing. But needs must and she did really well to do the full distance and we thank everyone for their patience waiting for us on the hills and the windy sections Congratulations to Steve and Jasmine for breaking their distance records Get well soon Chris | ||

Report:The rains returned. We were gently drizzled on for most of the ride, so we didn't feel like a long epic.But, we did still go up to the Ridgeway and back down again. Out along Crab Hill and Goddard's Brook - it actually felt like we were riding up the stream here! Then at the top of Betterton descent, Richard A noted a strange noise which turned out to be worn-out rear brake pads. Is it good to discover that at the top of a steep, fast, wet descent? Probably better than finding out half way down. Anyway, perhaps a bit more gingerly than usual, we did all arrive safely at the bottom, and with big mud spattered grins! Then back via Charlton and Crab Hill again. | ||

Description:As the weather forecast is nasty, we’ll keep this simple: out through Hanneys, Steventon, Drayton, Milton Park, Didcot, Harwell, Featherbed Lane, West Hendred, Ginge, Lockinges, Grove Park Drive, Grove. Mostly flat with a few bumps. Three-star pace, or a bit quicker depending on group composition & conditions. |
||
Report:Wet, wet, wet. Only four intrepid riders braved the conditions. Respect to Janet who cycled from Harwell to the start. However, we were all equally wet after the first 5 minutes! Kept to largish roads for safety; road spray and standing water still made this quite an ordeal. Slowish pace. Back just before 8.30 in the murk & gloom. | ||

Description:To celebrate the return of the website, and to defy the likely weather forecast, I think we will do a hill this week! Nothing too awful, just Hackpen Hill.So - around Wantage to the Letcombes, up the aforementioned minor challenge and then back down the exhilarating descent to Sparsholt, along to Kingston Lisle, down Fawler Hill to Uffington and then back through the Vale the usual way. This gives us a few short cut options in case the weather is really bad! Around 22 miles or 35 km. |
||
Report:Wow, what terrible weather! Just when we thought it was summer, it appears winter has returned.We combined the 1* and 2* rides and cut down the route around the Vale accordingly. It just got darker, windier and wetter as we went along! Riders:Brian HipwellDavid Smith David Talboys James Dawton John Tranter Louis Hall Robin Tucker Stephen Lee Steve Swanton Ursula Hallam Riders = 10 Weather:Report:A lovely day to be on the bike; and a great ride, although we had a few misadventures on the way...22 riders took part in some or all of the day, including those on the left. Quite a few faces new to CTC activities. A very big thank you to Kerry for providing us with with a wonderful selection of cakes in the afternoon. Full report and a few pictures to come. A second spin - by Robin We split in to 2 groups, and I joined the one that James led, keen to learn the route as I'm leading a Tri-vets Century group in 3 weeks. Unfortunately we started with a mishap before 2 miles were done. Starting the first significant climb, we changed down gears, but Richard Preece's rear mech jumped into the spokes and he ground to a halt. It wasn't fixable, so he limped back to base. I hope he has better luck next time! The rest of the loop out to the east went smoothly. The biggest climb of the day was easily dispatched by all, and the fast descent near Horton taken as a reward. We arrived at the first stop just before they officially opened at 10, but fortunately the doors were open early. Good coffee, tea and cake at The Milkshed in Weston-on-the-Green. We were soon off on the second leg, following quiet and beautiful roads north of Woodstock. We passed the CTC Oxford City group out for their Sunday ride. John Tranter had a puncture, easily fixed with plenty of superfluous advice given. And Rory Carnegie noted his slightly loose back wheel - only to get assistance from James and a bodge which involved shimming the QR with a thin spanner. At this point Steve's group caught up and passed us. After our fixes, we followed them on the the garden centre at Ramsden for lunch. The Oxford City group had chosen that as their lunch stop too, so we had a great collection of cyclists there (creating a bit of a queue for a while I'm afraid). Knowing we were only halfway, I refuelled with roast pork and chocolate cake. The post-lunch section took us Wantage riders on to familiar territory as we swung by Minster Lovell, Bampton, Buckland and the Hanneys. The cycling was smooth and steady in our group and I took some 'over the shoulder' pics in Park Lane. Then forced myself to recalibrate - Park Lane in normally about 5 miles from the end of a ride - today it was over 30 to go. Our tea stop took me on to even more familiar territory - my home! My wife Kerry had prepared some rather brilliant cakes and Lorna was helping to dispense tea and coffee to the needy. The weather was great, so we took all the chairs from the house and put the on the patio. Some lazed on the grass. The arrival of Steve's group prompted us to get on our way, freeing the chairs and letting Kerry and Lorna prepare for a second wave. We headed north through Abingdon and out to Eynsham (no tolls for bikes) then east through Yarnton where we had our final interesting adventure. James had peeled off by this point so David Smith was leading us back and the GPS said 'straight on'. Unfortunately, straight on was a bridleway that started ok but gradually got muddier and puddlier. I'm a big fan of off-road biking, but generally prefer knobbly tyres rather than 23mm slicks on a racing bike! However, we all passed without problem and David has fixed the route for next time. The final leg wove through Cassington and Kidlington. The contrast between these built up areas and the quiet countryside we'd been enjoying for most of the ride was distinct. But, we did know that it marked the beginning of the end. And the final few miles to Islip were once again between green fields, bathed in sunshine. We arrive just before 7. A long ride, but I think everyone was still feeling pretty good, and with a justified sense of accomplishment! | ||

Good strong group though so we all coped OK, in fact most of us had trouble keeping up with Cathy and Ashley on their tandem, when their chain didn't come offSurprisingly pleasant weather as well after a very dull and cool day. We were back after the customary Denchworth Dash just after 8pm so next time we could go a bit further maybe | ||

Uffington to Goring along the Ridgeway | 2* |

Leader:David Smith |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Uffington (White Horse Hill car park) |
Description:UPDATE 22/05 Note the ride now starts at the later time of 10:00.A day ride from the White Horse Hill car park at Uffington along the Ridgeway to Goring for refreshments, return via the same route with options for variation. A non-technical, but at 70 km, longish off-road 2*. |
||
Report:A select turnout on a beautiful day, a couple of people cheated and warmed themselves up on the ride over from Wantage! We made very good time on the way over to Goring enjoying the rolling terrain and with nothing too technical on the planned route Robin showed us several little side trails and pieces of singletrack that he knew of.Due to lack of planning on the leaders part we found the café in Goring was closed as it doesn't open on Sundays! Never mind, The Catherine Wheel was open and they were having a BBQ in the garden and some sort of face painting event. Robin & I tried the BBQ but no one tried the face painting. We decided to follow the same route home and quickly ascended up to the Ridgeway proper where the slight tailwind that had helped us make good time on the way out slowed some of us down on the return journey. A puncture was quickly repaired about 5km from the end. We all made it back to the car park for an ice cream from the van. Some of us were still raring to go which was lucky as they had to cycle back to Wantage! All in all a great day, thanks to everyone for coming along and welcome to Gareth on his first ride with CTC Wantage. | ||

Tuesday Evening Off-road Ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know.Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any 2. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:Raining all day, but it stopped just in time for the rides. On the road, it dried quickly, but of course the off-road trails stayed wet enough to give us a nice spattering of mud.The 3 of us out tonight were keen to stretch ourselves a bit further this week, and it turned into a mini-epic. We set off over Crab Hill then up Goddards Brook. Then along the Ridgeway east and off the back down 'ice valley' (no ice, lots of puddles). The wet coating on dry soil made it noticeably slippery. Then over the road and up next next hill (Hernehill). Through the woods - bluebells now being overwhelmed by greener vegetation. And left at 'High Robins' - that's what it says on my map! - and down a wonderfully slippery trail through the woods. I think each of us slipped to the point of putting a foot down along here. When we got to the next descent (down to the road mid-way between the Ilsleys) we were going decidedly gingerly. Then is was the last major climb, back up to the Ridgeway and we decided we needed to make it a triplet of slippy descents so we went under the A34 and turned left eventually going by Prospect Farm, then Chilton and picking up the Sustrans path through Harwell. (The diversion round Harwell has now been lifted). When we got back to Grove, our computers were saying 25 miles, our legs were saying 'that's enough' and our stomachs were saying 'FEED ME!' | ||

Description:I am going for hills on this one. Out via Wantage to Letcombe Regis, up Court Hill to the Ridgeway, down the A338 to Fawley and Woolley, then left at the monument over that exciting switchback. Then let's see how we feel - either straight on up the big hill to Brightwalton or left up the gradual hill to Farnborough. Either way, we finish off with the epic and fun descent of Chain Hill into Wantage. Back through Charlton to Grove.Around 20 miles / 30km. |
||
Report:Well, I must admit I wasn't looking forward to this, given the relentless rain all day beforehand. However, we more or less got lucky and just had a couple of light showers to contend with. All went according to plan, lots of hills and a great descent of Chain Hill to finish with.Worth mentioning Geoff's slightly disturbing habit of doing all the hills twice in the time the rest of us did them once. Bad for morale, but undeniably impressive... | ||

Riders:Henry HallJohn Stamp Lorna Swanton Louis Hall Mandy Wassell Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Vyvyan Hazell Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Who'd have thought with the rain all day and the dire forecast (>95% chance of rain from 4-7pm) that the weather would clear and we'd have a ride this evening. What's more there were 8 takers for the 1* ride, almost as many as on the other 3 riders together! A warm welcome to Mandy and also to Louis' son Henry.A change of plan this evening given the weather (we'll save the off-road for a nicer evening). We cycled out to Charney Bassett by way of Denchworth and Asti stud. Everyone was doing well and the weather seemed to be brightening up, so we agreed to extend; instead of returning via Lyford, we carried on past Lyford to the Hanney road and came back via West Hanney. It had seemed to be brightening up, but as we passed Lyford we could see black clouds looming in the distance and it became increasingly gloomy. Fortunately, the rain held off until we were nearly back to Denchworth and it remained fairly light back to Grove. But it did mean that we kept moving slightly more than we normally would on a 10-mile club ride. Back in Grove just after 8pm, after satisfyingly defying the odds. Thanks everyone for coming along. | ||
