Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. Relatively hilly 74 km ride visiting the Snelsmore Common and the "ends" of Oxfordshire and Berkshire (i.e. Lands End and Worlds End).Usual route to Lambourn via Letcombe and Hackpen Hill is followed by the valley road to Boxford where we take the leafy lanes through Snelsmore Common, Curridge to a tea stop at Hilliers GC at Hermitage (43 km). The return is via Oare, Worlds End, Beedon, Stanmore, the Ilsleys, Farnborough, followed by the ubiquitous plunge down Chain Hill. |
||
Riders:David SmithHugh Falkner John Groves Louis Hall Nick Stokell Olivia Pile Ursula Hallam Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A pleasant loop to the South enjoyed by a group of 3* regulars plus Olivia on her first ride with SPDs (which might have led to some entertaining moments, but didn’t!). David and Ursula had already ridden the return route in the morning and experienced a heavy shower, but we were luckier. The afternoon was dry and increasingly warm with sunny spells.After following one of my favourite stretches of local roads from Boxford to Hermitage, we successfully circumnavigated the garden centre and found the new café. Apple pie proved popular but some of us demanded custard with it which took a little while. David and Ursula departed back towards Newbury and the depleted group enjoyed fine views on the quiet lanes back through Beedon and Stanmore, before battling a headwind up to Farnborough. The increasing cross wind necessitated a bit of care on the descent of Chain Hill. Thank you to everyone for a very enjoyable ride and for making the effort to keep together and achieve the planned pace of 13 mph – it was quite a long, hilly ride for an afternoon ride (though not 930 m as RwGPS would have us believe – more like 800 m!). | ||

Betjeman Ride | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:Betjeman Park, Wantage |
Description:NOTE:- Change of date.As part of the Wantage Festival and in partnership with the Trustees of the Betjeman Park in Wantage, this is a gentle beginners ride from the Park to Uffington, where John Betjeman lived during the 1930's. We leave the Park and cut across to Grove past the famous Plane on a Stick, then Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to the parish church in Uffington, where delicious tea and cakes await. 10 miles and no hills - seriously, anyone can do this! The average speed will be around 10-11 mph. If you are up for it, we will guide riders back to Grove/Wantage by the same route in reverse as well. |

Riders:Bethany TranterBrian Hipwell Carin Tranter Edith Hipwell John Tranter John Vandore Karl Blake Lorna Swanton Louise Moggach Maeve Moggach Marielle Moggach Martin Hook Naomi Merritt Nick Portsmouth Sarah Dore Steve Swanton Riders = 16 Weather:Report:A record turnout for the Betjeman Ride, now in its fourth year. 20 riders set off from the Park after a great introductory talk by John Vandore. Having successfully negotiated the traffic challenges around the edges of Wantage and Grove, we settled down on the quiet lanes and pottered nicely to Baulking. Having stopped for a rest, we decided to explore the village - a first for me. It is very nice and has a very unique feel to it compared to other Vale villages - well worth exploring this little known dead end!This filled in time nicely so that we arrived at Uffington church perfectly in time for their always amazing tea and cakes. Eating outside on the tables provided was a bonus. It was great to welcome Tony and Rosemary Garde, Dawn Stephens and Graham Reeves to ride with us for the first time. Also good to welcome back the Hook/Moggach family with their amazing assorted children-carrying bike gadgets. Also very wonderful to have Edith riding with us again. All in all, a great success - thanks to all, particularly to John Vandore for organising and publicising. | ||

We made good progress to the foot of Manor Road where the fun begins and the flat roads ended. We climbed, descended and rolled our way through Brightwalton, Peasemore, Stanmore, East & West Ilsley and Farnborough. The final descent of Chain Hill, first time down for a few of us was excellent fun. Several people headed off home in various directions from the bottom of Chain Hill, while the rest of the group made its way through the market place and back to Grove.Thanks for coming along and making it a great ride to lead and many thanks to Jon Townsin for going the extra mile (probably literally) in his role as sweep. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. There comes a time in any Tuesday 2* ride programme when you just have to do Uffington White Horse Hill. That time has come! We will take the easiest and most straighforward route there and back via Denchworth and Goosey, so that we can spend plenty of time on the great Hill without rushing it.Don't worry - you can do this! A little bit of resting or walking on the way up is perfectly fine. In any event, the views will be spectacular, as will be the descent into Woolstone. Don't miss it! |

Congrats to Nicole for catching us up after a late arrival. Beautiful sunny and wind-less evening for tackling the great Hill. We could see it looming and calling to us as we approached Uffington village. Everyone managed the climb extremely well and we thoroughly enjoyed the amazing views from the top. There were some keen whippet shaped racing types up there, including one guy who kept on coming round several times. We ignored him.The descent into Woolstone was as exhilarating as ever and we made good time with a slight tailwind back to Grove. Thanks to all for a lovely evening. | ||

Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. Hillier route this time. We will be skirting through Charlton this week, then moving on via Route 44 to Lockinge & Ginge, then on to West Hendred, before a short stretch of the A417, and back via Ardington and Lains Barn.Distance of around 12 miles. |

Riders:Alvaro ReyCarin Tranter Clare MacPherson Joshua King Larry King Lorna Swanton Mandy Wassell Naomi Merritt Nicky Clark Sheena Arnold Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Riders = 12 Weather:Report:A wonderful evening for a cycle ride!Terrific turn out of 11 riders on a warm Summers evening, to soon be joined by Alvaro in Wantage to make the 12. Indeed, we had to negotiate a large group of children on bikes, and I thought perhaps they might join us(!) Ambling on through some wonderful villages, the group progressed well, and the two main hills were tackled with gusto, and each was rewarded with a glorious downhill. On arriving in West Hendred, the leader had a "senior moment" at a junction he did not remember, and had to check with Steve S, his trusted back marker, as to which way to go! Seems that many of the riders knew which way but the leader didn't....ho hum. All in all, a wonderful ride. Thanks all for your company. | ||

Off-road Afternoon Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:Greenham Common |
Description:UPDATEThe ride will start from the car park at Greenham Common control tower. Grid Ref is SU499651. Duration will be around 2 hours with a route chosen to suit those who come along form the ride. Weather looks good, so hope to see you there! Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the second Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings. The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. This ride will start in Newbury, on Greenham Common. Only a short one of about 2 hours, but plenty of opportunity to play on the Greenham single track on completion if you want. - More details to follow. |
||
Report:A cracking 2-hour blast around the Commons of Greenham, Newtown and Crookham, finishing with a little bit of canal towpath. We had one extra (new) rider whose name I will update when I remember it! | ||

Woodstock - Chipping Norton Special | 3* |
---|
Leader:Jon Townsin |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Woodstock |
Description:This 70 km ride starts out from Woodstock and takes in a 'charm' of delightful villages (new collective noun) of Stonesfield and Charlbury before visiting Chipping Norton and the stones at Great Rollright, then a stop for well earned refreshments at Wyatts Tearooms.From there we will head south east to Great Tew and south via North, Middle and Steeple Aston and Tackley before returning the way we came back to Woodstock. With a bit of luck we'll hear some good music as we pass the Cornbury festival at Great Tew! The route is mainly along quiet roads with some climbing in the middle section but nothing out of the ordinary. The ride will be set at a comfortable 3* pace. Parking will be in the free car park by the Library on Hensington Road. If you are planning to come, please let me know on 07780 676051 in advance so I can alert the tearooms. |
||
Report:A really pleasant ride through the Cotswolds in light cloud and a bit of wind but very pleasingly no rain*! The roads were by and large quiet (except for the occasional idiot) and well maintained. Beautiful scenic views on all sides dotted with some absolutely beautiful villages.We rode at a comfortable (just for me!) touring pace of 20.58 km/h climbing over 800 metres in 68.9 kilometres which in my book is officially lumpy if not quite a queen stage! In fact the pace must have been too slow at one stage as karen picked up a slug on her down tube ! We visited the kingsmen and Kings' stone at Great Rollright before dodging a rain shower in Wyatt's tea rooms* - excellent timing ! No queues outside the Cornbury festival but a definite deep bass kept the legs turning. Thanks to Steve, John Nick and Karen for a very enjoyable ride which got us all back in time for Wimbledon; Silverstone; TdF and the Euro finals - what a good day ! | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. Riders:Bryony StottDavid Smith David Talboys John Talbot Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Olivia Pile Terry Penn Ursula Hallam Riders = 11 Weather:Report:An interesting ride to say the least !First of all we welcomed Tom Clayton to his first group road ride and Bryony Stott on her first Three star ride - well done to you both ! As I had chosen a variation on a well known three star favourite, I perhaps should have been clearer on the 'subtle' variations as the group split at the A417 and arrived at the Letcombes from different directions. Nick was last seen trying to bridge the gap - but from ahead of the lead group! Pleased to hear you got back safely - if a bit damp ! Anyway, after some voicemail ping pong with Nick, the two rejoined sub groups headed off along the route which was enjoyable until, on the back of Seven Barrows, drizzle arrived becoming proper rain by Blowingstone Hill. A safe, if damp, descent took us through Kingston Lisle, Denchworth and back to OMH | ||

Tuesday Evening 2* Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Tonight, we'll follow the little-frequented road from East Hendred up to the Ridgeway to visit Scutchamer knob, a prehistoric long barrow, reputed to have been an important meeting place in saxon times. Although a steady climb from the end of the Ginge Farm track, this is probably the easiest of all on-road climbs locally to the top of the Downs . We'll head out via Charlton and Sustrans route 544 returning via the Hendreds, Ardington and Lains Barn. A few stretches of easy off-road but all manageable on a road bike. Round trip of just under 18 miles. |
||
Riders:Adrian WestAndy Belcher Barry Stanton Des Higgs Gareth Smith Karl Blake Steve Swanton Val Smith Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Eight riders tonight on what started as a pleasant evening outing and turned into something more “character-building”!Using the cycle track into Wantage, we followed the back route through Charlton to the start of Sustrans route 544 near the Nelson. We made steady progress through Lockinge, Ginge and along the Ginge Farm track. Then the novelty was turning right and following the road up to the top of the Downs. It’s a steady climb, everyone made it up ok and we were soon enjoying the views at the top - across Harwell and the vale to the Chilterns beyond. Despite recent rains, the Ridgeway was largely dry, and we cycled the 100yds or so along to Scutchamer Knob to take a look. It needs some imagination now to visualise that the remains of the round barrow here was once the site of the local moot (or council) and an annual fair. Without the trees, it would have been a landmark visible from all around. We’d been aware of dark clouds looming to the south as we had cycled along to Ginge, now they were getting closer. So we enjoyed the long descent down into East Hendred under darkening skies; the drop in air temperature was noticeable. Once in the village, we donned ‘proofs amid the first few drops of rain. It seemed to hold off while we toured the village and then took the path across to West Hendred. But as we turned uphill for the climb back to Ginge, the rain quickened. We sheltered for a few minutes under the trees at the top of the hill (Karl and Barry are getting used to this on rides with me!), then as it seemed to be easing we continued on. But it proved to be false optimism, as the rain then set in heavily. We sheltered briefly at the top of the fork at Betterton, before taking the plunge down into Ardington - it was wet and cold in the wind-blown rain! Once at the bottom, the rain did relent and we warmed up slightly on the climb up to the Lains Barn cross-roads, before another cooling descent down into the Vale. Back in Grove at 8:45, we were wet through. Thanks everyone for your company on one of those rides that will stay in the memory. | ||

Tuesday Evening 4* Ride | 4* |

Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. Updated route 7th JulyA challenging 52km loop to the South. The Aim/Challenge - stretch your legs on the hills, but "gruppo compatto" in between. Aiming to be done inside 2 hours. The Route - starting off up Manor Hill, regrouping just over the top at the Ridgeway. Then Southwards, dropping on the A338 but deviating to take in climbs to Woolley Farm and Buckham Hill (thus avoiding pothole tomfoolery around Gt. Shefford) to roll South of the M4, turning at Boxford onto the Winterbourne Road. Picking up the B4494 we will deviate immediately via Chieveley & into the lanes to Peasemore & rejoin B4494 at Lilley (CARE: fast gravelly descent to Give Way). A final teaser up to Farnborough should empty the legs before a well deserved final plunge into Wantage. |
||
Riders:Andy CowanAndy Pixton Jason Jones Nick Fisher Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Phil Ward Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Seven reported in for the evening's entertainment, eschewing the temptation of watching Le Tour Highlights in favour of some good honest exercise. Pleased to have teased Andy P out for a 4* ride at last, we started with a haul up Manor Hill and set about the following series of ramps interspersed with more gentle downslopes. Despite some ferocious climbing from Nick F, accompanied (briefly) at times by Andy C and Jason, great efforts were made at keeping a functional group over some pretty undulating terrain, showing it can be done, thanks all for a stress free ride. I should admit to having such a pleasant time of it that I missed a turn (just) but all was rectified quickly much to the amusement of some Chieveley residents. Having skirted around some pretty forbidding clouds and been able to role Southwards in broken sunshine, we finally caught up with the rain as we headed back into the Vale down Chain Hill. Evidently it could have been a lot worse judging from other groups' reports, so we can consider ourselves fortunate & smugly return to the sofa to catch up on the Le Tour with clear consciences, if not clean bikes. Thanks all, see you next week. | ||

Report:It started so well, with pleasant sunshine and DB's new bike, albeit with a forecast of possible rain. We went up Crab Hill and Lark Hill, then across the road and up to the Ridgeway near Manor Road.From there, we headed East on the Ridge, with a drop down Jolly Green Giant and a climb back up. We smugly looked north at the dark dark clouds and reckoned that we might get away with it. So we went to the fast, fun descent to the corner of Harwell campus, then headed North. It was about here that the rain hit. Fortunately, we found some tracks through the woods near Harwell and managed to stay in them for quite a while. But eventually, we decided to retrace some of our steps (pedals?) and head back via tracks at the base of the Ridgeway. We arrived back in Grove slightly damp, and ready for curry | ||

Description:UPDATE: Could you please let me know if you are planning on coming along in case I have to let the pub know a large number of hungry cyclists will be descending upon them.A ride to a different (mystery) local pub each month in Summer for a relaxing and sociable evening without any of us arriving by car. A ride of about 60 minutes at a relaxing pace to the pub for a drink and/or meal. The group will head back using a direct safe route when everyone is ready. ||
Riders:Adrian WestBarry Stanton David Bridge David Smith David Talboys Des Higgs Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Roger Postbeschild Ursula Hallam Riders = 10 Weather:Report:A great turnout for the inaugural Thursday evening pub ride. We decided that it would be more fun to make a real mystery ride and keep the destination and route secret until we arrived.We took advantage of the smooth new road surface from the Baulking Road past the Blowingstone pub, with a rest stop outside the pub a red herring, we then descended Fawler Hill to pass the pub in Uffington and after, what I thought, was another cunning move we headed away from our real destination before taking the second turning in to Woolstone and arriving at the White Horse pub from the West. Because of the numbers I had pre-booked a table and we were shown directly to a nice table in the garden. Initial drinks were a little slow in coming and there was some confusion over part of the drinks order, but once it arrived the beer was deemed to be good. The food arrived very quickly after ordering and again seemed to be enjoyed by all. Shortly before we left the pub a group of Farcycle riders arrived for what looked like a birthday celebration. Some discussion was had on the relative merits of Cycling UK membership, before 9 of us headed back to Grove. As Des was only 5 minutes away from home he decided to take the direct route. The ride back was a little quicker than the ride out, due to the drop in temperature and light levels, but it was still at a sociable pace. We all arrived safely back in Grove just before 10 PM. Thanks for everyone for coming along and to Ursula for sweeping. Hope to see you all on the next one. | ||

Once there, and a hint that I was leading at a bit too slow a pace, we set off again over Circourt Bridge, along the A417 and up the newly reopened and resurfaced New Rd to Childrey. A few undulations further on and we arrived at our tea stop at the Teapot Tearoom at Britchcombe Farm. Although it was busy we'd timed it just right as we managed to get an outside table as queue of people came in after us. It was also very nice of the RAF to lay on a flypast of the Red Arrows and a Hercules(?) in formation whilst we were there too!Suitably refreshed we then descended Broad Way into Uffington and back to Grove via the flat roads of Baulking, Goosey and Denchworth. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. Traditional Sunday outing: full day, touring speed [18-22 k.p.h. on the flat], rest at top of hills, pub lunch, optional morning coffee stop. First section is relatively flat with some short sections of cycle-path and narrow, potholed, and gravely lanes round Stoke Row [in part follows Sustrans National Route 5]. Lunch stop at the Black Horse near Checkendon [NB: limited menu – just baguettes, crisps, etc. - so bring extra provisions if you run hungry]. Afternoon piece is on better roads but hilly [including Streetley Hill – the back, easier way] before the final swoop down Chain Hill. 98kmEast from Wantage, Lockinge, Ginge, East Hendred, Steventon, Drayton, Sutton Courtenay, Appleford, Long Wittenham, Wittenham Clumps, Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Wallingford, Crowmarsh Gifford, over Ridge Way to Ipsden, Checkendon, Stoke Row, Cane End, Hook End, Woodcote, Cray’s Pond, Goring, Streetley, Four Points, Compton, East Ilsley, West Ilsley, Farnborough, Chain Hill |

Riders:David TalboysJenny Gower Joy Arthur Karen Townsin Nick Dunton Steve Swanton Terry Penn Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Finally a day that felt like Summer! Sunshine all day, sunscreen on and shade required at stops. Most of the cyclist in Oxfordshire must have been riding today: the Barbury Bash audaxes poached some of our usual three-star riders; the Wantage-Winchester ride meant that the Market Place was lurid with lycra. The Truck festival was on in Steventon - with Featherbed Lane closed to facilitate traffic flow - but we managed to get through. We stopped at the top of Wittenham Clumps to note the changed skyline following the demolition of the remainder of the Didcot power station turbine house. Elevenses were taken at Catherine's Café in Wallingford. The fields towards Ipsen were alive with poppies - a beautiful sight. Both Oxford City and Reading CTC groups arrived at the Black Horse for lunch so it was a social affair. We negotiated the gravely and potholed lanes around Checkendon with care. Joy did an "emergency dismount" at the crossroads in Gallowstree Common - not the first person to do this here! Streetley High Street was being re-surfaced which caused some delay as we had to walk through. Once we turned west at Four Points a headwind slowed progress and increased fluid loss, necessitating an emergency rehydration stop at the pub in East Ilsley [two pub stops in one ride - tut, tut]. Chain Hill provided the usual adrenalin rush to complete the ride. Average speed 20 kph - not bad given the weather conditions and 981m of climbing. | ||

Lots of uphill to start, to the top of Sparsholt, before the lovely swooping descent down into Lambourn. After a brief refreshment stop for ice-cream for the leader and sweeper the peloton moved swiftly up the valley past Ashdown House with a welcome tail-breeze. A swift drop down Ashbury Hill was followed by a brief sojourn along the first part of the spring line road before descending further through Woolstone. The return to Grove was via Uffington, Goosey and Denchworth, although we did lose John G to a puncture just before Baulking. Thanks to all concerned for keeping up a great pace, and being such an easy group to lead. | ||

It seemed somehow appropriate in these times of uncertain economy and political upheaval to match the mood.Seven left OMH in full sun and stifling heat. We made rapid progress NorthWesterly, sharing the lead & in part due to a strong tailwind. Lechlade was the far turn and I think most had already made significant inroads to their bottles by this point. Pete left us at Coleshill, feeling a bit "cooked" and with an ascent of Chain Hill to end his ride I suspect a sound decision. I continued to struggle on the few limited rises remaining and Simon peeled off on regaining the A417 after Shellingford. Having signalled my intention to abdicate at my next separation from the group, the remaining posse appeared content heading directly for Wantage. Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 2* |

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. Another slight route change as of the 22 July. I am really grateful to those that have contacted me to make sure we don't end up on footpaths, busy parts of the A417, avoid roadworks and see interesting parts of Blewbury. CTC Wantage at its best .Note slight change to route as of 20 July to reduce the amount of time on the A417 (thanks Ursula ) At this stage of the year it seems right to do a slightly longer, flat ride and so this month we're going to wander to the East. We'll cross the A338 at Hanney to reach Hanney Cow Road (current road works may mean a brief stretch on the A338 ) through Steventon to Sutton Courtenay and Appleford. Then skirting Wallingford we'll make our way to Blewbury for a cafe stop at Savages garden centre. We'll then turn left at Upton to go up Hagbourne Hill to discover the changes that have been made with the current A34 slip road alterations. We'll then pick up the sustran 544 route from Harwell Campus to Ardington. Not quite off-road but not tarmaced in all places. Then it's over the A417 for a swoop down to Grove down Lains Barn road. |
||
Riders:Adrian WestAndy Pixton Barry Stanton Chris Walters John Tranter Katherine Boyce Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Steve Swanton Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Its always good to arrive at OMH to discover that despite checking, there was probably a road closure en route. Even the locals contacted were not sure if the road between Hanney and Denchworth was open . So we decided we'd skip that part of the route and head straight down the A338. And that's what we did - having paused to welcome Sharon on her first ride with the club.It was a lovely afternoon for a ride - warm sunshine and a slight breeze. The roads to Wallingford were very busy, but perhaps it was the sun making the motorists laid back - there was no car-cyclist incidents . As ever the villages and lanes west of Wallingford did not disappoint. Quite lanes and pretty villages. Despite the leaders best attempts to get everyone lost in Blewbury we made the Style Acres café at Savages garden centre. The cake portions were up to standard and we reluctantly left to tackle the only real hill on the ride. We seemed to skip up Hagbourne Hill where we said goodbye to Chris. An interesting route through the Harwell site and their new road and on to the cycle paths through to Ginge. At Lockinge we said goodbye to Andy and the rest of us swooped down past Lains Barn and back to OMH. Thank you to everyone that came and made it a splendid afternoons cycling. | ||

Off-road Sunday Morning Ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Square |
Description:Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the 2nd Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings.This ride starts at 10am on Sunday, in Wallingford's Town Square. The ride will be led by a local Cycling UK Member, Cliff Bellis, and will head in to the nearer Chilterns. There will be a few hills, but taken at a pace that suits everyone, and no really difficult pieces of track. Parking in the Goldsmith's Road car park is free and usually plentiful. To contact Cliff, call 07815 013506 or email cliffbellis866@gmail.com The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. |

We'll then stop for a coffee and a chat at the end of the ride. *Note - Start Venue is WMP* For the last in the mini-series it has to be Chain Hill - my nemesis! Lesson learned - check start time of ride!The band of riders waiting at Alfred's feet were remarkably kind as was Des, who we met at the top of Chain Hill. Sorry everyone Given 2 of our group had never ascended Chain Hill before, they did it brilliantly, and despite a few gear glitches, we were soon freewheeling down the other side. At Catmore, a quick stop for a breather turned into a rather longer wait as a procession of motorcycles came streaming past. This led to a fair amount of confusion at the next junction and a minor adjustment to the route to avoid some of the A338, which they might have been travelling on. Descending to the monument at Woolley, we passed the feed station for a mountain bike event, through managed to avoid the predicted 700 MTBers coming our way. We made short work of the climb back up the Ridgeway, particularly Nick on his shiny new bike, then a lovely swoop down Court Hill and back into Wantage. Everyone stopped for refreshments at the Bay tree Cafe which was a fitting end to an enjoyable ride. Thanks everyone. | ||

Chris, ever the gentleman, had taken the lead on the A415 ensuring that the headwind was not an issue . Great patience was needed to cross the A420-unbelievable amounts of traffic . With plenty of checks to ensure the higher than normal pace wasn't an issue for anyone we were soon back at the A420 and on to Stanford-in-the-Vale. A bit of coaching on keeping a line during a group ride and we were on to Park Lane. Been a while since I've been down there and it is much improved. We said goodbye to those going straight back to Grove and joined the queue for food and drink at the Fox. Usual chef was on holiday so we had a bit more of a wait than normal. The second 3* group weren't far behind and were happy at their excellently led ride. It was lovely to welcome Mia on her first ride with the club and to see old faces out for club night. Unfinished Business - a 5th Saturday Special! | 3* |

Leader:Ursula Hallam |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Newbury - see below for details and directions |
Description:Unfinished Business - a 5th Saturday Special - taking you to sights you wooden believe!A Newbury mini-series 'Le Grand' re-try aiming to avoid last years torrential downpours and complete the route. Starting just south of Newbury - see below for details. We will start with an early warm-up as good as a '100 greatest' climb followed by a ride through the tranquil leafy lanes of Hampshire and on to the wide-open tank-sized roads of Wiltshire and the Salisbury Plain. Our return route will follow the Hampshire Avon north and traverse Plain territory again to reach Collingbourne Ducis with a final leg through the villages of Shalbourne and Ham. Brunch/lunch is at 43km - a re-visit to our previously impromptu Tidworth cafe. Afternoon tea at Crofton - they have a 'steaming day' so could be busy but I understand it's free to get into the cafe - they should be well-prepped and have oodles of their scrumptious cakes available and hopefully it'll be good enough weather to eat outside. There are earlier or later options in Collingbourne Ducis and Inkpen - we can see how it goes. Distance and climbing: 114 km with 1200m. Meet at The Chase National Trust Car Park (free), off Station Road, Woolton Hill. From the A34: Follow this route or directions below: Driving south past Newbury on the A34, leave at the A343 junction signed 'Highclere, Wash Common'. Turn left at the roundabout signed 'Newbury, Wash Common'. Then 2nd left, signed 'Enborne Row, East Woodhay, Ball Hall' and also for The Furze Bush Inn and The Yew Tree Garden Centre. On crossing under the A34, take the first left into Station Road. The car park is a short way down on the left-hand side. |
||
Report:A dry day for this re-run with 6 of us in the car park for the start – a magnificent seventh unfortunately lost in the depths of Burghclere – hope you got out for a ride anyway.With the climb up the side of Walbury Hill offering up fine views and the super downhill to Hurstbourne Tarrant out of the way, we kept a steady pace to Vernham Dean. With only a couple of raindrops threatening us, the next climb of note, up Conholt, offered up more views and then we weaved our way through the delightful lanes of the Hants-Wilts border to squaddie territory and an early but welcome lunch at Tidworth. Fortified, we joined the Bulford Road, with a totally different landscape – wide, open ranges and plenty of tank crossings – all the way to Bulford Camp and that fictional place, Larkhill. The road was a little busy round here, but we all safely negotiated the right-hand turn to our historical interlude – Woodhenge. “An atmospheric Neolithic site…probably built around 2300 BC” – some were more impressed than others at the reconstructed concrete marker posts but at least you can wander freely between them! Retracing our tyre-tracks, the busy-ness was left behind as we turned north along the Avon and then east across the plain again. Parachutes floated overhead and tanks rampaged alongside us! Luckily, I was still wearing my armies! At Collingbourne Ducis, plain territory ended and we’re back in North Wessex AONB. The fit mob edged away from me on the Fair Mile – unfair in my view – I am sure it is more than a mile! Regrouping at the A338 junction, we soon arrived at Crofton Beam Engines. Busy for their steaming day, but still efficiently dispensing tea and cakes for hungry cyclists, we found space on the grass in the sun to devour them. The ride back through Bedwyn, Shalbourne and Ham was fairly uneventful I think. Chris left us at Inkpen to cycle home and the rest of us made it safely back. Thanks to everyone for turning out. I really enjoyed it and I hope you did too. | ||
