3* Saturday Half Day Ride - Lambourn Woodlands | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.Please note slightly earlier start at 0900 (as I'm off on holiday pm). Planning to be back around 1300, say 1330 at the latest. This ride reaches down to visit the small country lanes around the Lambourn Woodlands area just South of the M4. The climbs are all on very quiet roads and we'll re-group at the top of each one. After a coffee stop at Honesty in Lambourn we'll take the scenic route back up Sheep-drove. |

Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Bridge David Smith John Groves John Tranter Katherine Boyce Nick Stokell Nigel Hughes Paul Bentley Sharon Bedford Ursula Hallam Riders = 11 Weather:Report:Lovely morning and a good number of riders for an early Sat morning start. It was also not too warm which helped us climb up to the Ridgeway from Sparsholt without too much pain. The climb up from Eastbury was new to a few and the roads South of Ermine Street were delightfully quiet if a little gravelly. Millionaire's shortcake proved popular at Honesty at Lambourn, which was quiet and efficient. Sheepdrove provided a car-free route back up to the top of Hackpen Hill. A red kite has been attacking runners on the road down to Letcombe Bassett recently but happily left us alone.Thanks everyone for a lovely relaxed start to my holiday week, and well done to David and Ursula for converting it into 100 km. | ||

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:(Date moved to 5th August to avoid other rides booked on 12th).Given the expected sunshine, my plan is to re-run the lovely woody singletrack sections that we did on the June ride, but maybe in a different order. Should be a very nice day for it. Regular off-road rides for 2018 we are toning these down and keeping them closer to Wantage. Free parking at The Beacon, and meet at Wantage Market Place, by King Alfred. The rides will be 15-20 miles, on quiet local tracks through the woods, and maybe up to the Ridgeway. Pace equivalent to 2*, best on a mountain bike, but a cyclocross bike and if dry a robust hybrid will be fine. Call/email Robin if you would like to know more. |
||
Report:Another day of sun and fun.The trails were very dry and riding fast. It being warm, the woodland sections were gratefully received as breaks in the shade. We added a section in after Rowstock, heading towards The Packhorse (but no beer) and almost Steventon. This let us sample a particularly nice woody section in both directions! Then, we headed to the 'bridge of doom' across Ginge Brook - on which, as usual, nobody met their's! | ||

Leader:Nick Portsmouth |
Start Time:6:30 pm |

Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.This evening we'll be going out via Denchworth & Lyford to visit Garford, returning via a track from West Hanney to Grove. A distance of 13 miles. The track is rough in places but should be fine for those with hybrids or not so skinny tyres on their road bikes. |

Riders:Alvaro ReyCarin Tranter Diana Whidborne John Hogston Martyn Wigmore Nick Portsmouth Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Another lovely evening for a ride, this one visiting 3 local churches at Lyford, Garford & West Hanney (actually just riding past this one). When we arrived at Garford, at the far end of the ride, we couldn't see the church but after walking around the end of some farm buildings and through the farmyard, there it was. All the times this ride leader's travelled through this village and I never knew it was there.After pausing for the ride photo we cycled on to West Hanney and then took the track back to Grove. Thankfully everyone's tyres survived this part of the route . Thanks to Martyn for sweeping and everyone for their company. | ||

Not likely to be very hilly.It's amazing how different a ride feels when you do it in reverse. So we are going to apply this principle to a classic ride to the east. We go out via Denchworth and Hanney, across the Cow Common road to Steventon, up the hill-ette of Steventon Hill, down Featherbed Lane to East Hendred and then across to Ginge. We trace the back lanes and tracks back to Wantage and then get to Grove along the A338 bike track. Lovely countryside, lovely villages and generally a nice route. About 19 miles at our usual mellow 2* pace. |

It was nice to be a little cooler!A big group meant we split into two from the start - thanks to Jon and Karen for leading the second group. Basically, it was just a nice, mellow ride. This way around seems hillier - perhaps because the ups are steeper and the downs are shallower. In any event, thanks to all for your company and making it such a fun evening. | ||

Description:Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.A nice easy ride as I have other stuff planned for later in the day! A trip north with a coffee stop at the excellent Bampton Garden Plants. The only hill of note is on the return trip up to Buckland. Expect to be back at Grove by 13.00. |

Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Benson Waterfront Cafe |
Description:Start at the Waterfront Cafe in Benson. Free parking in St Helen's Avenue opposite the cafe. Cafe opens at 08.00, so plenty of opportunity for caffeine loading and loo visits before the depart. We take the back way through Wallingford and over the Ridgeway to Ipsden, with a grungy, grass-down-the-middle lane to climb towards Stoke Row. After that, easier roads to Henley and the attractive riverside road to Remenham and the climb of Remenham Hill. Coffee stop at Velolife, Warren Row. From there it is fairly flat to the lunch stop at Jenner's Cafe, Maidenhead. We then ascend Winter Hill [the easier way], through Marlow, then lovely lanes through Freith and Fingest to reach Turville. Then it's hard work up the Turville Tunnel to Christmas Common and a fast descent of Watlington Hill. Then pretty flat home through Chalgrove. Afternoon tea at the Waterfront. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU INTEND TO RIDE - WON'T RUN IF NO TAKERS. |
||
Report:Despite the dire weather forecast, this turned out to be a largely dry ride. Waterproofs mostly stayed in the back pocket, and the majority of surfaces were water-free, although recent rain had washed lots of gravel into the road, so care was needed in places. A wide variety of cycling clothes were on display at the depart. Soon after Checkendon Jan had two front wheel punctures within five kilometres, and yes they were two different punctures in different parts of the tyre. These were the only mechanical problems on the ride. We were a little behind schedule but still stopped for coffee at Velolife which was, as ever, full of the lycra-clad. Andy left us here to go and get some extra kilometres. Jenner's was quiet and efficient so we lunched and left within 30 minutes. The only other incident of note was the large agriculture vehicle descending Watlington Hill, which slowed our homeward plummet. | ||

1* ride from Botley - OXFORD SPECIAL | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Botley shopping centre - bottom of Cumnor Hill |
Description:WEATHER UPDATE: 12 noon, SUNDAYOK - I am cautiously optimistic that the worst of the rain has passed. The ride is ON!! A very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside and canalside paths and quiet streets to do a 17 mile 'urban safari' around Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is almost entirely traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Meet in the car park behind the shops at the bottom of Cumnor Hill. Donâᅵᅵt be put off by the building work! Parking here is unrestricted on Sundays. We use the lovely track from North Hinksey to get to Osney Mead, then up the river, across Port Meadow to the canal, up to Wolvercote and then through the exclusive back streets of leafy Summertown until we get to the Marston Ferry Road. Then there is a fascinating series of hidden tracks and roads through to the Brooks University campus (including an unexpected manor house), then a swoop down to Florence Park and a final section of beautiful riverside towpath. Some of the tracks will be rough in places, so this is not the ride for carbon super bikes. Mountain bikes would actually work as well as hybrids for this. Really interesting - don't miss it! 17 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |
||
Riders:Alvaro ReyCarin Tranter Diana Whidborne John Tranter Lorna Swanton Martyn Wigmore Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:After a lot of anguishing over weather forecasts, it all turned out fine. No sun, but definitely no rain, which was a lot more important, The ground was a little wet and slippery in places, but on the whole the route was fine.It was great to see a valiant group turning up at Botley, despite the weather uncertainty. All went according to plan, except for a slip and a fall for Carin along an overgrown section of the Oxford Canal towpath. Nothing too serious, although we had a bunged up mudguard to try to fix along the way. The usual highlights were as interesting as ever - the river, the canal, the wealthy backstreets and of course the extraordinary Headington Hill Hall. The final section of river towpath was enlivened by the sight of an eights rowing boat in the colours of Wolfson/St Cross Colleges - it was nice for me to chat to some of my students as they moored by the boathouse. Thanks to all for your company! | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This week an extended variant of a Tuesday 1* favourite. We'll head to Lockinge and Betterton, first taking a cunning back route using paths and back roads through Wantage. From the top of the hill at Betterton we have a lovely long descent down to Ardington, then after a short steady climb a second descent into the Vale past Lains Barn. We'll return to Grove via the Thames Water Road and Cow lane (an easy off-road track). Riders:Carin TranterDiana Whidborne Lorna Swanton Matt Baines Steve Swanton Thiyanga Kotecha Riders = 6 Weather:Report:A beautifully sunny if breezy evening saw 6 of us out on the 1* ride. A warm welcome to Matt on his first ride with us.The ride was at the upper end of the Tuesday 1* range with its combination of more ups and downs, some off-road and a slightly higher pace than average, with which everyone coped well. Nevertheless, we still had a number of stops to rest and enjoy our surroundings, most notably on the bridge overlooking the pond and church at Lockinge. By the time we reached the top of the hill above Lains Barn, the tree tunnel ahead on the descent was becoming pretty gloomy and combined with the low sun, it was necessary to put lights on. After the great descent, we had a stiff headwind to contend as well as the low sun as we wound through the fields back to the A338. Here Carin decided to head straight home, while the rest of us continued over the railway bridge and turned off onto the Thames water road (second turning on left) , which has one of the nicest surfaces around. By the sewage works, the road turns into a track that leads up onto the Hanney lane bridge. From the top we looked down on the old Monk's farmhouse, boarded up, and the surrounding fields that will soon be developed as part of the new estate. We were back in Grove just before sundown after a most enjoyable evening out. thanks everyone for your company. | ||

Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.UPDATE 12/08/18 - NEW START TIME OF 2.00pm UPDATE 14/08/18 - The A415 as you go into Kingston Bagpuize is closed until October 1st. If approaching from Grove/Wantage, you can go up the Hanney Road into Southmoor and then through to Kingston Bagpuize and across the A420 and on to Standlake. This month an awayday 1* ride to the Thames Valley starting from the large car park outside Standlake village hall (OX29 7SB) with tea stop at Aston Pottery. All welcome. I thought I'd repeat a ride I lead last year that gives 1* riders a chance to visit Aston Pottery. After leaving the village hall, we'll ride through the villages of Stanton Harcourt, Hardwick & Yelford before stopping at the pottery after about 12 miles. We'll then have another 5 miles to go back to the hall, via Cote, Shifford & Brighthampton. I'm aiming to to ride near the top end of 1* pace and the route includes a couple of inclines similar to the rise from the A417 to Childrey. |

At that point, Roger (thank you for sweeping) mentioned that he knew of an off-road route back to Standlake and so after a short ride along the main road, we followed it. He lead us along a path between some more lakes and which went along a wonderful tree arched section. Just after we turned off this path to head towards the village, we spotted some Rheas so stopped for a photo. We then carried on back to the village hall. Thank you to everyone for their company and to Roger again for showing us the extra section. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL | 3* |

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.This is one of a series of Oxford special rides this year, taking advantage of my very best cunning knowledge of the secret routes in and out of this complicated but beautiful city. This is an all day ride at a steady touring pace, designated 3* because of the distance but otherwise with a 2* flavour. NB: NOTE CHANGE OF START LOCATION TO OLD MILL HALL We head east via Hanney and Steventon to cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden, then a lovely section via the Baldons and Garsington gets us to the south edge of Oxford at Horspath. We skirt the Mini factory before a particularly satisfying bike track route pops us out on the Cowley Road and we head over Magdalen Bridge up the High and into the heart of the city. I will let you into some Bursar/tour guide insider secrets as we pass my own St Cross College and head north through Jericho to a lunch stop at The Plough in Wolvercote. We will then enjoy a spectacular loop around Port Meadow and a super cunning transit of the A34/A420 junction before conquering Cumnor Hill and heading home via Appleton. Unmissable! This is a long route, but we will have a number of short cut options in the last 10 miles or so and we can adjust to suit. |
||
Riders:Des HiggsJan McCabe Jenny Gower John Tranter Karl Blake Sharon Bedford Terry Penn Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Cooler weather and a stiff south-westerly breeze failed to put off this robust group. All went pretty much according to plan - highlights included getting incredibly lucky with roadworks: both the Cow Common road from Hanney to Steventon and the A4074 from the Golden Balls roundabout to Nuneham Courtenay were closed for resurfacing, but open for us! In both cases we sailed along normally busy and unpleasant roads completely unbothered by motorised traffic - all a bit of a Ride London vibe...Anyway, Oxford was fun as well as we checked out a few tourist highlights as well as some lesser known gems like Wellington Square and the Blavatnik building. Lunch at the Plough at Wolvercote was a little slow, but good and the final stretch had a nagging headwind but everyone coped well with the challenge. Thanks to all for a fun day out! | ||

As has become the norm this season, we split into two groups - thanks to Jon and Karen for managing the second group and also thanks to Nick for sweeping the first. A nagging headwind on the way out the hill, a good strong climb from everyone, a glorious descent and then a super-powered tailwind return to Grove. Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. 2-2.5 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). Lots of hills !Out and back via A338 to avoid (known) roadworks. This is a ride with plenty of climbs but this being the end of the summer season, I planned to cram in as much as possible before the daylight will disappear so the pace will be high (including on the hills). There are shortcut options if we fall behind, such as miss out on the Curridge loop (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28338720) or even miss out on Boxford/Winterbourne as well, but let's aim for doing the full route anyway and decide what we do based on progress. Days are shortening quicker now, so working front and rears lights for last part (down Chain Hill, if not before) essential! |

Description:Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.UPDATE FRIDAY: Great news, I have just had a lovely offer from Des and his wife Chris to host a tea stop at their house in Longcot. For those who don't know, Chris is a professional caterer and, believe me, you don't want to miss out on her cakes! Please bring £2 cash to cover the costs. A nice easy flat ride as we approach the end of the season. This is a big loop around the whole of the Vale of White Horse and featuring a fine selection of beautiful villages along the way. We go anticlockwise to give a bit of variety. Out via Denchworth and West Hanney to Fyfield, then to Hinton Waldrist and Pusey, down to Hatford and Fernham, then a turn back towards home via Longcot and Uffington. 32 miles / 51km. |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:An essentially flat ride around the vale this evening heading to Charney Bassett, Ock Bridge and West Hanney, with the choice of taking either an off-road track back to Denchworth (a little stony in places) or the lovely resurfaced road. There is the opportunity for riders to stop for a sociable drink or a meal at the Fox, with riders from the other groups. If anyone would prefer to head straight back to Grove, the leader is happy to continue back.With the evenings drawing in rapidly (sadly, this is our penultimate ride of the season) lights are recommended and will be required if stopping at the pub for a drink. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. Optional social stop at The Fox at Denchworth at the end of the ride. |

Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).Not too long, but has a couple of climbs as we will undulate through the Letcombes before ascending to Sparsholt Firs, which we'll take very gently (I'm planning to bring my single speed, so you'll need to wait for me at the tops, I may have to walk ). From there we descend to Sparsholt, potter along the springline before another lovely descent through Kingston Lisle, then final flat few miles to Denchworth, where there is an optional stop for refreshment at the Fox. There will not be a led ride back to Grove. And remember you will almost certainly need lights if you are cycling back to OMH post-pub. |

Although there were some ups on the 2* it was done at a gentle pace and everyone kept up without any difficulty. As we went through the Letcombes, we had a great view of the deer in their field on the right, there must have been around 100 of them, and the stag with his antlers looked magnificent!Having undulated through the letcombes and then climbed up to Sparsholt Firs, we were rewarded by some lovely downhills as we swooped down to Sparsholt, and later down through Kingstone Lisle and a flat final few miles getting to the Fox just as it was getting dark | ||
