May be hilly.About time we headed north for a bit. A classic Tuesday night route to Abingdon back via Tubney, a tiny bit of the A420 then across to Denchworth. This will be at the fast end of 3* to make sure we minimise cycling in the twilight . |

With busy roads, Sara and Jane kindly agreed to lead a second group and we were off. Luckily a puncture turned out to be without foundation and barely caused a pause. With the wind at our back we bowled along merrily. The second group caught us at Steventon. An uneventful crossing of Abingdon and we were on the return. The wind kicked in mightily as we crossed the vale back to Grove but it barely seemed to slow as down. Both Roger and Nick did excellent service as sweeps. The busy roads were as busy as expected, although the A420 was probably the quietest of the busy roads. The pot holes were beyond belief in places!

A nice roll down to Lambourn before the steady climb back over towards the Letcombes and then home. Lights advisable in-case of delays during the ride. |
||
Riders:Frank SchroerJason Jones Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Riders = 6 Weather:Report:After a spirited start, we settled into the headwind as we set our sights on the White Horse.Jarv decided to find out what it's like to wait for everyone at the top of the hill - so he went ahead to Ashbury while the rest tackled Dragon Hill. Very little chat on the way up. Serious faces. Once regrouped on the Ridgeway above Ashbury, we navigated the lunar landscape that is a typical Oxfordshire road in 2018, only to cross into the smooth-tarmac utopia of West Berkshire. Oh, how the other half live.... West Berks delivered further once we reached Lambourn, with a glorious tailwind all the way back over Hackpen Hill. At Letcombe, it was decided to transfer Ride Leadership to P.Ward (after being sufficiently briefed on how to navigate back to Grove) as he was the sole returnee to OMH and the original RL's fingers had turned blue due to poor glove choice. All riders home before dark. Some lights were used towards the end due to the gloom.

Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Tonight we head out, bound for West Hanney, via Denchworth and Lyford. All flat, apart from the railway bridge(!), and smooth (barring those pot-holes to avoid...) Total trip of about 9 miles (sunshine on order). Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

A bumper group of fifteen riders - turned up for a bright evening. Two new riders , Esme and Paul - both welcome, along with everyone else of course! Split into two groups, meeting up properly at each pause. Second group very ably led by Gareth. Customary pause at Denchworth, before relaxing stop by the church in Lyford (statutory photo..), then ambling round to West Hanney. Good sharp warnings were heard for approaching vehicles, not to mention for the occasional (or frequent) pot hole or crater in the road. The pause at the Church in West Hanney was brief, as all preferred to move on before the cold set in. Back at Grove before 8pm and before lights were needed. Well done all!. Especially as we did 11 miles - two more than advertised(!) Thanks to Gareth for leading the second group, and to Steve S for sweeping. A very enjoyable ride.

Not likely to be very hilly.Heading out via Wantage for a change this week. We pass through the two Letcombes (Regis and Bassett) before one very minor hill sets us up for a nice descent into Childrey. Then along the lanes through Sparsholt and Westcot to Kingston Lisle. A nice descent to Uffington, and then back home on the flat roads via Goosey and Denchworth. 19 miles. |

Great to welcome Natalie on her first ride with us, and Julie on her second. We managed to navigate the mean (and potholed) streets of Wantage without incident and soon found ourselves on the quiet lanes through the Letcombes. The little climb of Holborn Hill didn't seem to worry anyone overmuch and we certainly enjoyed the big descent to Childrey, followed fairly soon by the swoop down Fawler Hill to Uffington. After that it got really nice as the previously nagging wind became a nifty tailwind and we bowled along very happily back through Baulking and Goosey to Denchworth and home. Thanks to all for being a great group!

3* Saturday Half Day Ride | 3* |

Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. Please note the 1300 start time! Hilly ride to Stanford Dingley (and back) - but we will re-group at the tops of the climbs. Passing through some of the quieter downland and Pang Valley lanes with a tea stop at Hilliers GC at Hermitage. I thought it was worth re-visiting this route but it can't easily be fitted into a morning without encroaching on the afternoon. Should be back in Grove by 1730. |
||
Riders:Chris GrayJason Jones John Groves Louis Hall Nick Stokell Phil Ward Richard Saunders Roger Postbeschild Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Cracking afternoon for a ride! At last we had the warm sun on our backs and light winds. Once Chain Hill was behind us (first ascent for Roger - well done!) the group kept together pretty well and enjoyed the quiet lanes across the downs and along the Pang Valley. After Stanford Dingley the two climbs made themselves felt and for most us the tea stop at Hermitage was very welcome - Phil and Jason skipped the stop and headed for home, probably at high speed if I know them! The remaining 6 enjoyed a leisurely stop then made our way back stopping for a quick photo opportunity at the top of Woolley Hill (message to self - store phone in bag to prevent sweat on the lens!).Thank you everyone for your company, and keeping the effort up on quite a challenging ride.

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This week a ride to Childrey with its village pond overlooked by old cottages. We'll cycle out through Stockham and East Challow, following the track across to Childrey with great views across the Vale and up to the Downs. We'll return to Grove via Challow station and Goosey. There will be two short sections along the A417. A round trip of about 10 miles. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. Riders:Diana WhidborneGareth Smith Jane Bruffell Lorna Swanton Martyn Wigmore Sheena Arnold Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:What seemed like being a chilly evening, as we rode to the start, turned into a brighter one, the sun emerging just as we set off and staying with us through to sunset. This week's ride was a step up in exertion levels from the first two rides of the season, being longer with some climbing and an off-road track. But the reward for our efforts in the first half was the lovely long descent from Childrey to the A417. And even the cars on the A417 seemed more patient than usual, waiting for us all to turn into Goosey on our way home.As usual, there were a number of stops along the way to rest, enjoy the views, the light and the scenery around us, and to have a good chat. We arrived in Childrey at the same time as the 2* group, who must have sprinted up Silver Lane just before we crossed it on the bridleway. We got back to Grove just on sunset closely followed by the 2* group. Lovely to see Jane out with us again and Sheena on her first ride of the year too. Thanks to Gareth for sweeping duties on a most relaxing ride.

The group seemed to split naturally into a group that regularly ride 3* and the other mainly 2*. The roads seemed busier tonight - but drivers were all polite and patient - just how we like it!The weather improved as the ride went on and the views were spectacular. One dropped chain in Childrey and we were on our way again. A decision in Kingston Lisle not to deviate to Uffington was rewarded by the smooth sweeping road down to Baulking. Before we knew it we were saying goodbye to Sara as she went back to Hanney and we made the most of the wind at out backs to get back to Grove. A very mellow ride. Thanks all.

Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. A scenic trip to Didcot and the NR5 cycle-path behind the power station. Most of the route is fully surfaced and fine for road bikes. However, we’ll also take the cycle path between Ginge and East Hendred which is rough in places. Fairly flat route of 46.7km, so aiming for a reasonable pace. Note: in places this route uses busier roads than the majority of our rides, so best to avoid if you dislike riding in traffic. Please bring lights in case of unexpected delays.Lains Barn Lane, East Lockinge, Ginge, Hendreds, Featherbed Lane, Harwell, Didcot, NR5, Sutton Courtenay, Drayton, Steventon, Hanneys, Denchworth, Grove |

Riders:Andy CowanEddie Little Joy Arthur Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A very select group tonight. Perhaps the delights of Didcot weren’t sufficiently attractive. No matter – it was a very evenly balanced bunch and a doddle to lead. Despite the warnings, traffic was quiet throughout the ride. Even the transit of Didcot went smoothly. The temperature seemed to drop a few degrees during the ride and several of us felt distinctly underdressed. The setting sun also caused problems – maybe I’ll reverse the route next time. The highlight of the evening was the illumination of Joy’s ‘ride-the-night’ pink spoke lights. Although it was a "select" group of a Magnificent Seven(!) Maybe the "Royal Wedding" effect, plus other things, that kept others away...Very smooth, relaxed ride all round. All coped well with the "rat run" from East Hanney to Steventon - which linked the to "ends" of the ride together - namely the quieter roads to the Hanneys, and then - post tea stop - the picturesque route from East Hendred onwards. It was noted, that the two hills on the ride were coped with efficiently, with Roger, on his 3-speed, 70 year old bike, who made it to the top first on both!! Three broke off in Wantage (having earned their corn by cycling from Wantage to start with) leaving four of us to return to Grove. Thanks all for a great ride in the sun!

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |

Leader:Jenny Gower |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. This is a hilly ride, but is slightly shorter than normal - so hopefully the two will cancel each other out. From the market place we head out on the usual route through the Letcombes and up Hackpen Hill, then down into Lambourn and along to Eastbury, up the Shute and down into Hungerford. Then along to Inkpen and up the hill towards Combe. Down again, and then at Netherton back up to Faccombe. We head back down into the Kennet Valley for lunch at the Yew Tree Garden Centre, then the afternoon is slightly less hilly. Through Hampstead Marshall, Marsh Benham, across the A4 and down to Boxford, through Brightwalton, Catmore, West Ilsley and the final pull up to Farnborough, then all we have to do is free wheel back to Wantage. I'm not planning on going fast and will be regrouping (and gasping) at the top of the hills. |

Weather is looking perfectThe classic annual Century ride organised by Cycling UK Oxfordshire. Challenge yourself to cover 100 miles, but enjoy company and the support of the group on the way. This year's century will start at 8am from the Clover Place car park in Eynsham (Grid Ref SP432094). The route has now been finalised and is shown below. Lunch will be taken at Wellesbourne airfield. After some very pleasant rolling countryside in the afternoon, we'll climb back into the Cotswolds, the easy way, through the Evenlode Gap, with a well-earned break in Kingham. The final quarter is predominantly downhill, interrupted by a short haul out of the Evenlode valley before a drop to the Windrush at Swinbrook. We'll return to Eynsham through Minster Lovell, Cogges and South Leigh. Total distance just over 100 miles. This will be a led ride at a steady pace of 12-14 mph. Riders are welcome to join us for all or part of the ride (meeting us en route by prior arrangement), making your own century if you want to. What a magnificent day 😀. A fantastic route that showed the off the British countryside to wonderful effect. A great pace that enabled the blossom and fragrance from the hedgerows to be fully appreciated. Well timed stops and breaks allowed everyone to stay together and enjoy the day. Thank you Steve, one that will last in the memory a long time. |

Leader:Steve Boreham |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:East again! Out through Charlton, then taking Route 44 to Lockinge and Betterton before "up over the hill" and down to Ardington (if weather and energy permit, we can do the Lockinge/Betterton loop a second time). Then return (up over another "small" hill) via Lains Barn.Total of around 9 miles (or 13 with the extra loop) Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Riders:Diana WhidborneDouglas Gunn Jason Hopkins Kirsty Gunn Lewis Hopkins Lorna Swanton Martyn Wigmore Owen Hopkins Paul Penfold Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Riders = 11 Weather:Report:Another great turn out of 11 riders for another warm sunny evening.Regular stops taken, to keep it all relaxed. We were soon out via Wantage and on to the Sustrans Route 44 an down to Lockinge, where we had a nice relaxed break by the statue of Best Mate (for those horse racing buffs). Shortly after that we tackled the main hill of the ride - a short but sharp climb at Betterton. This rewarded by another quick stop, before whizzing down the nice long hill to Ardington. The option of a second circuit - back up to Lockinge an round - was eschewed, in favour of keeping it "chilled" on such a glorious evening. The group split nicely at various stages into two, to tackle the narrow or busy bits, to keep the motorists happy. Then it was all rounded off with the nice roll down past Lains Barn and home. Well done to all, particularly Owen and Lewis who kept pace without any problem whatsoever! Thanks to Steve S for sweeping and to Martyn for group "splitting" duties!
