Tuesday Evening 3* Ride | 3* |

Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. A scenic trip to Didcot and the NR5 cycle-path behind the power station. This is a wildlife haven and alive with rabbits and red kites [good opportunity to practise bunny-hopping!]. Route is fully surfaced and fine for road bikes. Fairly flat route of 46.7km, so aiming for a reasonable pace. Note: in places this route uses busier roads than the majority of our rides, so best to avoid if you dislike riding in traffic.Lains Barn Lane, East Lockinge, Ginge, Hendreds, Featherbed Lane, Harwell, Didcot, NR5, Sutton Courtenay, Drayton, Steventon, Hanneys, Denchworth, Grove |

Riders:Alex McGregorAndy Pixton Bryony Stott Chris Walters David Talboys John Groves Katherine Boyce Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Olivia Pile Phil Stubbings Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Riders = 13 Weather:Report:A dank and dismal evening but a good turnout. The usual traffic problems slowed the start out of Grove. We took the cycle path between Ginge and East Hendred – sorry to those on light tyres. The road between Harwell and Didcot is closed; we managed to squeeze past the obstruction on the pavement and then had a gloriously quite approach to Didcot. Chris had a split tyre and puncture just before this and elected to drop off the back with Phil in attendance [catching us just after the finish]. The Power Station cyclepath was lined with flowering teasels but few rabbits. We upped the pace over the flat final sections, despite a headwind, to get back before the gloom really set in. Thanks to Andy and Dave for sweeping duties. | ||

Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Simple loop around the Vale. Along the Spring Line to Kingston Lisle, Fernham, Gainfield, Denchworth and back to Grove. |

Riders:Adrian WestAndy Belcher Barry Stanton David Smith Des Higgs Gareth Smith Jane John John Tranter Karl Blake Mila Yearley Richard Preece Simon John Susie Turnbull Ursula Hallam Val Smith Riders = 15 Weather:Report:An excellent turnout of 15 riders on a warm and sometimes damp evening. The Spring Line road seemed particularly busy and the undulations seemed to get most people working hard. The new road surface from the Blowingstone pub to the Baulking road were navigated safely this week if at various speeds. A loop around to Fernham and we were soon saying goodbye to Des & Adrian as they made their way home from there.The dreaded slow puncture was detected by one unlucky rider, but thanks to our chairman’s pumping prowess we all made it back to Grove without changing the tube. Thanks Richard for sweeping, John for pumping duties and to all for coming along, hope you enjoyed it! | ||

Leader:Phil Ward |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. Route EDIT Sunday 31 July due to Winter Lane Closure....Cogges or cogs ? Either way, you won't need many of them - this is FLAT, seriously ! Very do-able in a tad over 2 hours, possibly less depending on how good we are at echelons: a strong Westerly is predicted for a predominantly North/South ride..... ho hum! Four loops (hence cows' stomachs monica) heading Northwards to get us into some delightful (narrow) lanes up to Witney. Joints feature up this way too (no, not that sort !) - expansion joints, so bear with me over those "b-dunk, b-dunk, b-dunk" sections. Plenty of opportunity to cut a stomach out if the "usual" Tuesday evening weather catastrophe visits upon us a plague of frogs or somesuch.... more likely a plague of flies given the proximity to water in the flatlands North of the A420. Come and give it a go. Lights essential given sunset is 20 mins after our projected return & a heavy overcast is forecast, so it will likely get gloomy fairly early on. |
||
Riders:Andy CowanFrank Schroer Nick Fisher Nick Stokell Paul Jarvis Peter Cowan Phil Ward Riders = 7 Weather:Report:"Didn't We Almost Have It All?" With apologies to Ms Houston (RIP), but it always seems to rain when I go to Witney this year!A publicised flat route brought a flavour of the 20th century to the 4* camp... 3 steel mounts (1 a single speed) & 3 sporting mudguards. However, I can report use of a good array of seriously bright modern lights too, it was never going to be the fine sunny evening I'd hoped for. Undeterred, with regular changes of lead we made excellent pace to the quiet and sheltered lanes around Cogges. "Remember when we held on in the rain, The night we almost lost it....." she had it right there too, the now persistent drizzle and deepening murk forcing a brief pause mid-ride to clean glasses, Garmins and check we were actually still on course. With a nagging Westerly showing no signs of abating, we were grateful to mile-muncher Frank among others for deploying generous amounts of horsepower on the run in, culminating in an ultra long range bid for the Denchworth dash.... the result of which I was too far back to witness ! An awesome night folks, coping (dare I say, enjoying) some inclement riding conditions, returning some good figures too. "The ride with you was worth the fall my friend..." Good grief, Whitney, who wrote this song? I have to admit as I soloed gently in the dusky gloom around Old Mill Hall car park, I totally failed to spot the pothole that grabbed my front wheel and refused to let it go, depositing me in slow motion on wet tarmac, thankfully with relatively minor consequences. Next week, the (gear) tables are turned, with Nick Fisher putting Streatley Hill on the menu.... I can't wait | ||

Jump at the end was inspired by the 1985 (not 88 as I said!) world road champs winning jump of the last Dutch world champion, Joop Zoetemelk, video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewA2Ssh8jVM (fast forward to 5:30 though). Take the long way into the turn and then blast it - it worked for me as well (to beat a steel bike and a singlespeed though...) |

Leader:Karen Townsin |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. Tonight a clockwise loop from Denchworth, through Charney Bassett, Lyford and West Hanney. The plan is to return to Denchworth via the restricted byway - suitable for mountain bikes and hybrids.A flat 12miles in total. |

We let the other groups go, then headed out to Denchworth to pick up Tony and Christine, new but experienced riders, from Denchworth Manor.The group stayed together well through Charney Basset, Lyford and West Hanney, where we made a tour of the village and took the group decision to head back on the road rather than the track which had been wet and muddy earlier in the day. Unfortunately, Bill made an unscheduled dismount here, his fall only broken by his youngest grandchild! Luckily no harm was done and we cycled on to admire the community pub. The new surface from West Hanney to Denchworth was a dream to ride on and we look forward to the rest of the roads in the area being completed. Welcome Maisie and Jess, Ellie's younger sisters, and Jo and Ian, Mum and Dad. Welcome too, to new rider Paul, recently moved to Wantage and to Tony and Christine. We hope to see you on another ride soon. Thanks everyone for a lovely sociable ride. | ||

Tuesday Evening Off-road Ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:In addition to the riders noted, we were joined by James and Frances from South Hinksey.We left Grove via Crab Hill, through many nettles, thistles and brambles - the wet weather clearly having boosted vegetation growth! The we took the cycle path east of Wantage, and it was up to the Ridgeway along Goddards Brook. Reaching the top, we headed east, enjoying the view and the tailwind, until we reached Scutchamers Knob. Then we returned to the Ginge descent, which was great fun if a bit prickly! We return by road and cycle path via Lockinge. | ||

Saturday Afternoon Ride from Grove | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. UPDATE: Route amended slightly to avoid the Winter Lane resurfacing on the way back. I've also had to give up on the terrible surface of NCN5 from the river to Kennington so we will take the road up through Kennington. My local spies tell me that we can negotiate the road closure there without problems.This is a re-run of last year's special route into the centre of Oxford. Out through Charney Bassett, Appleton and Cumnor, down the hill to Botley. Then my cunning car-free entry to Oxford via bike tracks and beautiful river sides (suitable for all bikes). We will use our archeological skills to uncover the sad state of National Cycle Route 5 through the city and follow it regardless. VIP private venue tea stop courtesy of St Cross College (with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles). Then along the river path to Iffley, Kennington and back via Sunningwell and Fyfield. NB: if the paths are too rough, we will take an alternative route via Kennington. 40 miles - an easy but interesting 3* ride, with easy terrain - suitable for 2* riders as well. Don't miss this one! |

Riders:Barry StantonBrian Hipwell David Talboys Jo Little John Groves John Tranter Karen Townsin Karl Blake Martin Purling Mike Bailey Nick Portsmouth Richard Saunders Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Susie Turnbull Riders = 15 Weather:Report:A glorious, perfect summer afternoon with cloudless blue skies and a gentle breeze. Ideal cycling weather!A good group assembled, with a nice mix of 2* and 3* riders. We set a good pace to Cumnor and then had fun along the river and mild frustrations fighting through the tourists on NCN5 through town. It was therefore particularly pleasant to reach the cloistered sanctuary of St Cross College and to enjoy coffee and cakes in the Blackwell Quad. After fighting through a few more tourists, we had a good run down the Abingdon Road out of town and enjoyed the new underpass below the southern bypass to Kennington. The road closure had disappeared overnight, but the traffic was still very light and the remaining section via Fyfield and Denchworth was soon done (despite a slow puncture and a mystery mobile phone lying in the road ringing - long story...) Thanks to all for your company - it was a fun afternoon! | ||

Uffington to Avebury Off-road | 3* |
---|
Leader:David Smith |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Uffington White Horse Car Park |
Description:An opportunity to ride foot-loose and traffic-free along one of Britain's oldest roads...Rated 3* for off-road distance only, 2* for off-road technicality - on average, compared to the terrain the regular Tuesday-night off-roaders tackle, this is probably off-road-lite, with some rutted sections and a gravelly descent of Barbury Castle, being the main challenges. That said, it IS off-road and NOT suitable for road bikes. From the White Horse, we will follow the Ridgeway westwards over Liddington and Barbury castles to it's proper start/end at Ovington Hill. A short section of road alongside the avenue of stones takes us into Avebury for lunch at the NT cafe. Picnic area available if you prefer to bring your own. The proposed return route crosses the Ridgeway and follows the Herepath and Manton Down to Ogbourne St Maizey to join the Chiselden and Marlborough Railway path. Alternatively, if you fancy a bash at ascending Barbury followed by the simply smashing Smeathes Ridge grassy downhill, we could return on the Ridgeway and join the Railway path at Ogbourne St. George. In either case, we pop out at the Three Trees Farm Shop for a drinks/icecream stop if desired. Then a short hop on the 'Old Ridgeway' back to Fox Hill where we will pick up the Ridgeway trail again for the final leg. Approx. 70km in total. Meet at the Uffington White Horse car park - £4/day - or for a free option try Uffington Village Hall (Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall) car park and a short ride out to meet us. |
||
Report:An unexpected drizzle in the air and an unwelcome cool westerly didn't make for a perfect start to the day. Nevertheless, spirits were upbeat as we set off from the car park. Plenty of chatting indicated how easy the initial Ridgeway trail was, with an occasional hand-signal to a hole indicating some of our contingents more usual roadie environment. Fox Hill didn't seem to warm us up much and Nick became the target of some envious looks as he stopped to put a long-sleeved wind-proof on. Not to worry, by the time we had puffed our way up to Liddington Castle, patches of blue sky could be seen over the Eiffel Tower in Swindon heading our way. It was Nick's turn to be envious as we reached the Ridgeway crossing above Ogbourne St. George as we told him how we had climbed the 17% hill a couple of weeks previous. I think that's been added to his list now . After a slight correction to the leader's enthusiastic straight-on route was taken to get us back on the Ridgeway, we were downhilling to Ogbourne and onto the gated drag to Barbury Castle. Unfortunately, this was more draggy than usual as we were still into the wind. To add to the challenge, the freshly mown hay had not yet been baled and our well-oiled chains proved to be a magnet for it. I've de-greased a chain before but never de-grassed it! The downhill from Barbury was shorter than I remember, and it was just a short hop over Hackpen before we hit the rutted section that took us all the way to the Ovington Hill start/end of the trail. We followed the avenue of stones into Avebury for lunch outside at the NT café which was in bright sunshine and buzzing with tourists.Opting for route no. 1 for the return, due to the fact that the Smeathes Ridge downhill was going to be more hay'd work than way-hay, we climbed out of Avebury, crossed the Ridgeway and headed onto the Manton Downs, all fairly easy-going, although Phil's emergency braking system gave us all a scare at one point. A slightly thistly adventure was had on some uncharted bridleway, before the road through Ogbourne St. Maizey brought us to the Marlborough-Chiseldon Railway path. The pace picked up a little on the flat and cyclists coming towards us seemed to feel the need to stand aside to let us pass which we attributed to the leaders serious cake-face. As a result, we reached the café with plenty of time for tea, cake and some curious refreshment. All that was left then was the 'Old Ridgeway' road section and a re-tracing of our outward route from Fox Hill back to Uffington Castle in glorious sunshine and with the wind behind us. Phil continued towards home by climbing up to the castle and beyond, while the rest of us called it a day and simply did a celebratory lap of the car park. A lovely day, thanks to everyone for riding out. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Now that everyone is so fit, the time has come for a nice leg stretcher - we go out to the Letcombes, up Hackpen Hill and then carry on for a mile or so before looping back across the beautiful Seven Barrows road to the top of Blowingstone Hill. A dramatic swoop down, with a very definite stop at the B road cross-roads at the bottom. Then we will make our way home via well trodden/tyred routing down Kingston Lisle Hill, Goosey and Denchworth. This is a route that always feels like there is more downhill than uphill. Logically impossible but let's go with it!23 miles and lots of fun. |

It was great to welcome Patrick on his first ride. Also it was Paul's first 2* ride after a taster of 1* last week.A good group stayed together well and even the big climb of Hackpen Hill was dealt with very easily. Leader:Nick Fisher |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5-2 hours ride at a riding pace of 25-29km/h (16-18mph). May be hilly. It would be a shame to finish the season without a visit to the closest of the Top 100 climbs, and this is the week!First half of the ride is flat; out to Didcot via the A417 and Harwell, then through South Moreton and Cholsey to pick up the excellent Wallingford Road south towards Goring. Ascend up from Streatley at your own pace, and we'll re-group at the top. From here, we'll wind our way back home via Compton and the Ilsleys, finishing with a deserved descent down Chain Hill. A slightly longer ride tonight, but we'll stick together as a group and get everyone home safely for tea. Please bring front and rear lights. |
||
Riders:Allen StaceyAndy Cowan Frank Schroer Jason Jones Nick Fisher Peter Cowan Richard Kembleton Riders = 7 Report:Another great ride this week - thanks to everyone who rode out.We headed towards Wallingford at a good pace with a friendly tailwind, progress marred only by a series of red lights in and around Didcot. From there the progress to Goring and Streatley was fluid, although Frank suffered a chain malfunction which split the group temporarily. Streatley Hill was a (pleasant?) surprise to Rich, Allan and Jason, who hadn't climbed it before, and we re-grouped at the top before heading back homewards, now with the wind very much in our faces. Jason left part of himself on Streatley Hill, and parted company with us in West Ilsely to make his own way home; from there we all peeled off at the appropriate point towards Grove, getting back still in the twilight phase of the evening. | ||

Riders:David JacksonGareth Smith Lorna Swanton Naomi Merritt Sarah Dore Stephanie Haddrell Steve Swanton Tim Parr Val Smith Riders = 9 Weather:Report:An evening that started overcast, breezier and chillier than of late, with a touch of damp in the air, turned into a glorious evening as the sun made a very welcome appearance half-way round.9 riders set off towards Wantage on our winding route to the Letcombes. To avoid traffic we used the A338 cyclepath and then the cut-through to Adkin Way to reach the Denchworth road in Stockham. From Ham Road, Locks Lane provided a quiet route through to Priory Road and on to the Leisure Centre. We then joined the delightful track and path through to Letcombe Regis. After a brief pause to regroup, we enjoyed the newly surfaced road out to Letcombe Bassett before taking a rest to admire the old cress beds on the Letcombe Brook. This set us up for the hills, which everyone climbed with aplomb! Well done. A real confidence booster for those climbing Holborn Hill for the first time. After that it was pretty much downhill and flat all the way home, with the wind behind us and the evening sun shining. It was just lovely to be out. We were back in Grove just before 8:30 with the sun setting having completed nearly 15 miles (woops on the distance estimate). Thanks everyone for your company on another enjoyable evening ride. Off-road Afternoon Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:1:30 pm |
Start Location:Bury Down/Ridgeway GR479840 |
Description:Mobile 07582483315Car parking available at Bury Down or ride there. Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the second Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings. The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. This is a chance to explore some of the trails on the old 45 mile Uptonogood ride only without the usual mud (fingers crossed!). Route heads down towards Aston Tirrold then sharp right back up past Lowbury Hill and out to the woodland trails around Aldworth. After returning to the Ridgeway we follow more familiar trails back through Compton and the Ilsleys. The route avoids the most overgrown paths but there are a couple of sections with low hanging twigs so eye protection is necessary - clear lenses highly recommended for the wooded parts! Any Qs please email me. |
||
Riders:David SmithJohn Davies Nick Stokell Ursula Hallam Riders = 4 Weather:Report:Fine day, dry trails, what more could you ask for? Well, perhaps a little less rutted and overgrown in places, but that would be a bit pernickety. After an easy bash along the Ridgeway things got a little more exciting descending towards Aston Tirrold (lesson don't take the right hand rut on this one!) followed by the steady climb back up to the Ridgeway. Beautiful views Eastwards as we approached Bower Farm gave way to the lovely, shaded singletrack through to the Aldworth road. Everyone coped well with the most overgrown section from Roden Down towards Compton and the rutted climb up from East Ilsley, and the drinks at the Harrow were well-deserved.Thank you everyone for making it such an enjoyable lead. | ||

We travel in a clockwise route via Oakham, county town of Rutland, and Melton Mowbray, pork pies, to our first stop at the Old Brickyard Tea Garden near Scalfold (40km). Following refreshments we will travel north past the railway test centre at Old Dalby and past the headquarters of the British Geological Survey in Keyworth. We turn to the east into the picturesque Vale of Belvoir proper where we will take lunch at the On The Sands café in Long Clawson (83km). Shortly after lunch we climb Terrace Hill (#29 in 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs) and get to Belvoir and it's famous citadel. After Belvoir we head south through the Vale and small villages back to Rutland Water where refreshments at one of the lakeside kiosks can be obtained. The ride is nearly 140km and rolling rather than madly hilly and nearly entirely on small lanes. A couple of short sections of cycle track but nothing that any bike can't handle. Pre-registration of interest in this ride is essential. It won't go ahead without support and I need to know numbers in advance. |

CTC Oxford City - Wantage Away Day | 2* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Limborough Road Car Park |
Description:CTC Oxford City are coming to Wantage on Sunday 14 August for one of their awayday rides.Meeting in Limborough Road VoWHDC car park at 9:30am, the ride is about 41 miles up onto the Downs (via Blowingstone) with coffee in Lambourn and lunch at the Stag, Leckhampstead all at a 2* pace. I’m planning to ride this one and other Wantage riders would be very welcome. Please let me know if you’d like to join us. |
||
Report:8 riders from Oxford assembled in the Limborough Road car park to be joined by Karl and myself. Having spotted the CTC winged wheel sign above the former Oxfam shop, David suggested taking a picky in front of it. This was duly done, before we set off to the Letcombes. I continued with the group as far as Kingston Lisle and then waved them off from the bottom of Blowingstone... having been ill during the week, this was enough for me, and I trundled home to flop in front of the Olympic coverage!So how de the rest of the ride go?... I've included on the list, several Oxford riders who ride with us occasionally (as quite a few have from time to time). Steve S | ||

Leader:Andy Pixton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly. I've chosen this route to take advantage of a fairly quiet A338, due to the road's closure in Wantage.We'll head out to Lambourn, via Denchworth and Childrey, then across to Great Shefford, and back to Grove via the A338. The light quality is forecast to be good, but please bring lights, in case any delays take us into the twilight zone! |

Having briefly considered splitting the ride into two groups, we set off as one, with ride leader happy that everyone knew how far we were going, and how long we had to do it in. We welcomed two new riders, Arthur and Kirsten; Arthur out with dad Richard, on a rare non-off-road ride with the club. Kirsten had seen our conspicuous club shirts at Ride London a few weeks ago and made contact with our Chairman at the event, reasoning there couldn't be more than one Wantage, could there?We avoided Grove and Wantage on the way out, taking a route through Denchworth and Childrey to Hackpen Hill. If we weren't warmed up already, we certainly were by the time we reassembled at Sparsholt Firs, ready for a lovely steady descent into Lambourn. A short stop outside the church and we embarked on the undulating route to Great Shefford. After a diversion through East Garston itself, to avoid the poor surface on the main road, we paused briefly in Great Shefford, before the long climb back up to The Ridgeway. The road was much quieter than usual, as expected. The ascent stretched the ride out a little, but we regrouped at the top. As we began the descent of Manor Road the setting sun presented itself as a bright orange semi-circle on the horizon. It was noticeably colder now. Many riders peeled off for home in different directions, at the bottom of the hill, leaving less than half of us to return to Old Mill Hall. In spite of the large numbers, making for a less than compact group at times, we were back before dark. Thanks to all who came along, particularly to Dave for making sure no-one dropped off the back. | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Thought we'd pop out to Faringdon this evening. After last weeks climbs, the little hills in the middle will be a doddle . Warm, sunny and virtually no wind. And what a lovely group to lead, doesn't get much better than this!As would be expected at this end of the season, we were able to keep a good pace up, with few stops. Which was useful as we went out to Faringdon. Everyone made sure that on stretches with lots of traffic, good gaps were kept for the motorists. Even the motorists were outstanding - can't remember another ride where there were nothing but patient motorists and no incidents that caused me to swear . Everyone gave Fernham hill short shrift and we regrouped before tackling the A420. Once safely over, Des led us through the back streets of Faringdon, we were treated to a rideby Des's childhood home and scenes of some of his earliest cycling adventures . The artic lories at the A420/417 politely allowed us safe passage to reach the A417. Adrian and Des peeled off at the Shellingford turn, those that tried to follow them luckily realised their error before turning - phew! Then it was back across the Vale, before being overtaken by the 4*s just before Grove. None of us took the opportunity to slip stream them . We had obviously got our timings right for the time of year as the 2, 3 and 4* rides all completed within a few minutes of each other. Thanks to Jon, Karen and Richard for doing sterling work as backmarkers. A ride as perfect as the weather, thanks all | ||

Heading South West with a few different rises to loop via Lambourn & Eastbury. Seven Barrows leads to the infamous STOP at the bottom of Blowingstone Hill. Smaller grades warmed us up for the Sparsholt - Seven Acre Hill climb, a far tastier ascent than Hackpen in my opinion. Oblique sunlight made descending to Lambourn a delight. As we began the Eastbury loop " Hail fellow, well met!" Pete (fresh from Lakeland pass-storming) was spotted U-turning having plotted a perfect intersection course and we became six. The quiet delights of Haycroft Hill proved a welcome novelty, trimmed off with a touch of Ermine (Street). Rattling back into Lambourn to begin Seven Barrows, the dew was starting to fall across the gallops and lights were lit atop Blowingstone. Mellow conversational pace from Kingston Lisle through to Denchworth, whereupon the friskier dogs had almost too many rabbits to chase (thanks 2* riders ) in a frolic along "the dash".What a fabulous evening, thanks all - totally chilled after my last scheduled lead of this season. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. A slightly longer (13 mile) but flat ride through the Vale this evening heading to Pusey and Gainfield, out and back via Charney Bassett. Paddle and Picnic Ride from Grove - CANCELLED | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph).Unfortunately, due to the high winds forecast for this afternoon, the ride has been CANCELLED. Plan A is a repeat of our successful, watery ride from 2 years ago, heading northwards to Duxford, the lowest ford on the Thames, where we'll stop for a paddle. The ride will head out via Denchworth, Lyford and Southmoor where we'll cross the A420 on a bridleway overbridge. We'll cycle through Longworth, past the beautiful church and manor house and continue into Hinton Waldrist on an easy bridleway. We can then enjoy the short descent into The Thames Valley . After visiting the ford there is a short climb back into the Vale , but this is on a very quiet road (cul de sac) which everyone can take at their own pace. We'll stop for a picnic tea on the green by the church in Hinton Waldrist. Please bring something to sit on and refreshments. We'll return via Charney Bassett and Denchworth. Round trip about 19 miles. |

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. UPDATE FRIDAY 19th: it looks like most of the exciting weather is going to pass on Saturday, so I don't see any serious problems for this ride. It looks like we will have a bit of a westerly breeze to contend with. I have a few names, but please do let me know if you plan to ride - I don't need an absolute commitment, but I do need to give the pub a realistic estimate of numbers.I'm going for a ride here of pleasing statistical symmetry - 100km with 1,000m of climbing! I'm also shamelessly stealing a large chunk of Richard P's epic winter ride from January this year, but adding to it since the weather will definitely be more benign! The basic plan is an anti-clockwise loop south via the Letcombes, Lambourn, Chilton Foliat, Little Bedwyn and Hungerford to end up in Kintbury for lunch at the Blue Ball. The return will be via Newbury, Compton, The Ilsleys, a possible stop for tea at Saddleback near Farnborough if we are ahead, and the glorious swoop down Chain Hill to finish. If you are planning to come then please let me know so I can pre-warn the pub. This is a serious ride with quite a lot of climbing, but we have all day and I will be cautious on the pace, keeping it at the bottom end of 3*. |

Riders:Adam CavendishChris Walters David Talboys Jenny Gower Jo Little John Tranter Joy Arthur Karl Blake Nick Dunton Olivia Pile Sharon Bedford Steve Swanton Terry Penn Riders = 13 Weather:Report:A very big group gathered in the Market Place, although grey clouds and a strong westerly wind weren't particular encouraging.Steve Swanton dropped out early on, victim of a lingering illness, but the rest of the group stayed together well over the early climbs. The wind was sapping strength, so we were relieved to get a few miles of flat tailwind in before lunch. Service and food quality were good at the Blue Ball. We decided against complicated routing through Newbury and opted instead to link across from Marsh Benham to Stockcross and down the gloriously named Snake Lane to get to Shaw. As anticipated, the final stretch from Compton to Farnborough was pretty brutal - a rollercoaster road and into the wind. As time was pressing, we decided not to stop at Saddleback. To add insult to injury, we even had a few spots of rain on the way down Chain Hill. Many congratulations to all - this was a very tough ride, made more challenging by the wind, and it was impressive to finish it so well. | ||

Luckily the husband was very happy to lead half the group - thanks Andy . Also thanks to David Tallboys and Nick Dunton for sweeping the rides and Nicole for providing first aid on Andy's ride!So having seen off the faster of the 2 groups, we proceeded off across the Vale. A few false starts and we were off to Garford and a stretch of the A338. At the Frilford crossroads we turned right and then went through the back of Marcham, which is very pretty. A lost water bottle at Wootton, paused us but we quickly resumed and crossed the A420 at Bessels Leigh. Through Appleton and Fyfield, back over the A420 and another pause for someone to recover from a cleat issue. A slow down for the unmade up road that is part of the roadworks on the Hanney-Southmoor road. A glorious setting sun accompanied us as we said goodbye to Adrian and Des at Charney. Description:Monthly 45-55km (30-40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months. UPDATE 9.30 SATURDAY MORNING: weather looking slightly weird, but the ride will go ahead regardless!There was exceptionally good feedback from my recent ride into the centre of Oxford, so I thought I'd try another variant. Simple routing across the north Vale to Cumnor, down Cumnor Hill (all the way this time!) and then it gets cunning as we sneak along the tracks over the A34 junction and enjoy the old road up to Godstow and around the top of Port Meadow. We pop through the village of Wolvercote, down the Woodstock Road, through the back streets of Jericho and enjoy another VIP tea stop at St Cross College (being the Bursar brings certain benefits...). We head out of town south to the river bank and follow my cunning route west back to Cumnor. Then we track back through Tubney and Fyfield. This will be run at 2* pace and will be a fairly long ride because of the intricacies of the city centre routing. Expect to be back in Grove 5.30-6pm. |

Thunder rolled around as we set off and some had driven through flash floods to get to the start. But - how amazing that so many had made the effort!The first half was all good - the rain held off and we enjoyed the swoop down Cumnor Hill and the nice loop around Port Meadow and down into Jericho. As we arrived at St Cross College the sky began to darken rather dramatically. Fortunately we were just about indoors with cake and coffee purchased before the downpour really began. After waiting for a while, we decided to tough it out and set off again regardless. The riverside tracks were fun and the climb of Cumnor Hill was managed well. But, my goodness, the rain was pretty unrelenting by then! We had a fairly spectacularly damp return ride, but everyone was in good spirits as we got back to Grove. Riders:Allen StaceyChris Walters Jenny Gower Lyn Taylor Nick Dunton Nick Stokell Pam Stokell Terry Penn Riders = 8 Weather:Report:My reputation for only leading rides on sunny days is ruined. Today saw two or three heavy downpours – necessitating wet-weather gear stops - and several prolonged periods of drizzle. Needless to say the roads were slippery – too slippery for one rider who took a tumble on the roundabout before Theale. We were also involved in an RTA just before the lunch stop when a white transit [had to be – didn’t it?] tried to overtake us causing an oncoming car to brake hard and the following car shunted into his rear. All very eventful! Apart from that, the ride was excellent. A strong team made short work of the morning’s climbs. Jenner’s provided excellent refreshment, and we took an ice-cream stop in Theale. We were briefly stymied by a closed road but Allen found an offroad alternative to bypass it – worrying about those MoD signs, though … The pace was upped a little on the flatter, afternoon sections – despite a headwind - until the nasty rollers before Bradfield slowed the peloton. All regrouped for the final descent of Pangbourne Hill. | ||

Off-road Afternoon Ride (CANCELLED) | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:2:30 pm |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Square |
Description:Sorry - Cancelled due to rain which would make it very slippery and not pleasant riding.Cliff Bellis will lead this ride from Wallingford. It will be at the less technical end of the range with no difficult sections, but will still involve some great tracks and countryside going both up and down in the nearer Chiltern hills. Twice monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. These will be on the second Saturday afternoons and 4th Sunday mornings (except this one is in the afternoon at 2:30pm!) The rides will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road, and aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). We adjust the ride to suit the riders and the weather, but in general the terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. |

Riders:Adam CavendishAlan Gale Alex McGregor Bryony Stott Chris Walters David Talboys George Anstis Jo Little John Keiller Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Kirsten Smith Martin Purling Mike Cooke Phil Stubbings Phil Ward Richard Anstis Richard Ashford Sara Ward Yvonne Bird Riders = 21 Weather:Report:Yet another glorious evening for a ride. With an interesting route devised by Nicole who couldn't make it, we made prompt exit from OMH, barely taking time to greet John, joining us for his first ride. It was good to leave Denchworth on a rarely used route and take the A417 west of the railway line. A quick stop to put lights on before the dark parts of the Springline road and we were on the approach to Uffington and the start of the climb to the summit of White Horse Hill.Everyone ascended at their own pace, for a few it was their first time going up WHH on a bike. What a great night for it - great views, the windmills barely moving as they emerged as we climbed. The light starting to bleach out of the countryside and time at the top to appreciate it. There was a bit of confusion over leaving the summit but this ensured there was riders checking out for those descending. Most of us had to pause before crossing to the Woolstone road to allow the 4* riders to pass. Then it was a swoop down to Woolstone and an increasing pace back to the A417. We split into smaller groups to reach the Fox and a parting for those back off to the OMH. Particular thanks to Jon for doing a sterling job sweeping which is always testing when there are large groups. | ||

We went for a ride that was undulating and a bit longer than average - it's fair to say that some enjoyed it and some struggled a bit, sorry if it was a bit too much.At least we got back to the Fox in time to enjoy the food and drink with the other groups. Riders:Allen StaceyAndy Cowan Andy Pixton Elliot Whittaker Frank Schroer Jerry Bird Nick Stokell Peter Cowan Richard Saunders Riders = 9 Weather:Report:Well I`m blowed, at 620 there was a strong possibility with so many away it would be me and Frank and I wasn`t too sure about Frank;5 minutes later we had our best turnout with 9 hardy souls.Welcome Elliot,who upped the gene pool somewhat,hope to see you again next week.Andy Pixton popped up from 3* with a promise to reorganise his running day to come with us more often next year,Richard was back from Wales and it was great to see Allen and Jerry back for a second helping.Full credit and many thanks to Mr Schroer who led from start to finish,keeping a perfect tempo and the group together the whole way,which considering the lumpy terrain took some doing but must make him a serious contender for Lead-out Man 2016 at the Club Awards this year! Pub turnout was good(terrible Bouillabaise though) and I`m pretty sure we can put this one down as a good one,thanks everyone for coming and making my life easy. 30 miles av 17.5 | ||

10 Mile Club 1* | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. The Hanney Explorer. Out via Denchworth to the Hanneys and back. Depending on numbers, there may be an option to split the group so that those who would like can return to Denchworth across the track from West Hanney. The track is rather stony and rough at present and a mountain bike (or large tyres) is recommended to enjoy this. The main group will return on the newly relaid road...Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride for a sociable get-together. Lights are recommended and will be required if you are cycling home after stopping at the pub. |

Riders:Carin TranterChristine Ashdown Ian Mackay John Tranter Lorna Swanton Naomi Merritt Nicky Clark Paul Penfold Sheena Arnold Steve Boreham Steve Swanton Tony Ashdown Tony Clark Val Smith Riders = 14 Weather:Report:Another good turnout on our penultimate ride of the season and a beautiful evening to boot.We cycled gentle out to the Hanneys, taking a sneaky short-cut on a path through East Hanney en route to the lovely green just north of the crossroads. Sadly with the sun setting, we could not linger too long and returned by road to West Hanney. Perhaps unsurprisngly with the choice between a stony path and pristine tarmac, everyone elected to stick to the road. We were back in Denchworth just before sunset and everyone came into the pub for a meal or drink. An enjoyably relaxed ride and social. Thanks everyone. | ||

Tuesday Evening Off-road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. Optional stop at The Fox in Denchworth at the end of the ride. |

Report:Pub night, so we headed more West than East, on a fine summer evening.We stared along the canal, then cut across to Letcombe Bassett and climbed to the Ridgeway on big ol' Gramp's Hill. Then it was west into the setting sun, enjoying a dry Ridgeway track and the descent at Sparsholt Field. Half way down the hill, I heard a bit of a crack. I stopped to check, and a small crack had indeed opened up in my my hardtail's frame. It's had a long hard life, and already been welded up once, so I think that just about wraps up its useful life But it also means the chance to buy a new frame and build it up with all the bits, which shouldn't be too expensive So it was a gentle ride to the pub, and a beer and a burger put the cap on a very pleasant evening. | ||
