Report:
The most glorious sunny morning for quite some time! With no 2* ride today, Louise, John and birthday girl Angie joined us to enjoy a gentle meander around the Vale. 7 of us set out from Old Mill Hall, dodged puddles on the road to Denchworth, paused briefly under the walnut tree there and again by the church at Lyford, where Steve caught up, impressing us with his detective skills (spotting tyre tracks going in one direction only).
Coffee at Stanford Coffee Shop was as good as ever. Our wide-ranging chat touched on ride-leading, noting that Thursday 1* rides will only be once a fortnight over the winter, and that it's always helpful if leaders sign up well in advance, so people can plan.
We said goodbye to Louise in Stanford and returned to Grove via Park Lane, Asti and Denchworth, enjoying more sunshine and chat along the way.
Thanks, everyone, for your company.

Report:
A ride out to Aston which was aborted a few weeks ago. We started out in drizzle and a chill wind but it was good to see that all 9 riders were up for the challenge of a slightly longer ride of 31 miles out to Aston Pottery.
The planned route included a return via Brook Road which is notorious for flooding so we were aware we may have to return via Bampton and Buckland Marsh.
We headed out Charney, Hatford and Littleworth and as we progressed the blue sky appeared. We rode from Clanfield to Aston in sunshine and were pleased to arrive shortly after 11.30 for the obligatory coffee and cakes. The staff were very happy and helpful although they could not advise us about great Brook road. We enjoyed our coffee and cake and social break and decided to give Great Brook a try- a lovely ride along newly surfaced road and the sun shining over the fields. It was not until we were almost out the other side that we met a substantial puddle with an abandoned car in the middle. Passable?? I think not although Peter was considering it. Unfortunately at this point Peter fell and damaged his arm and his gears which meant he could not continue the ride. I stayed with him and Louise very kindly agree to stay to ride back with me. The rest of the group made their way back with the leadership of John Tranter and Des Higgs, I understand without further incident. Myself Louise and Peter walked back to Aston where Peters wife met him. Louise and I then road back via Buckland Marsh Charney and Denchworth. A lovely ride with good company, just very sorry for Peters unfortunate accident and wishing him and his Bike a speedy recovery. Thanks to all for support and understanding.

Description:
Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph).

Keeping it simple and hopefully avoiding too much flooding, this is a classic big loop around the Vale. Out via Denchworth and Uffington, one climb up to Knighton and then our coffee stop at the delightful Baking Bee at Ashbury. We then take in a few of the best west Vale villages before heading home from Shrivenham via Fernham and Hatford.

Grey clouds at the start and steady drizzle for the climb wasn't encouraging, but in the end the sun came out and all was fine.

A lot of mud and puddles around, but the group coped well. We had a nice stop at the Baking Bee on Ashbury, although the service was a little slow - good that they were busy.

Thanks to all for a fun morning.

Regular Wantage Ride 3*
Leader:

Start Time:
9:15 am
Start Location:
Hungerford Train Station
Description:

Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

Starting at Hungerford Train Station (according to West Berks website free parking on Sundays) allows us to explore out west towards Marlborough and Pewsey and still make it a manageable ride given the declining daylight hours. About 50 miles / 80k in total, with one cafe stop approx. half way round at uksticksandstones.com

Report:
Starting at Hungerford gave us the opportunity to explore areas we don't visit often, which we all enjoyed. We found lots of quiet roads with some lovely views. Autumn seems to arrived out of nowhere - but despite it being chilly it was nice to see the trees beginning to change colour.
The cafe worked well - we were fortunate enough to arrive just in time to get the last big table - and the food was great. Given it was busy we were served very efficiently.
We had one sticky moment on the return when Katherine's gears jammed - but Richard game to the rescue with a perfectly positioned "kick" to the pedals, which seemed to do the trick.
Richard had cycled over from Newbury, so he left us at Inkpen to return home and the rest of us completed the ride in plenty of time to get back with some of the afternoon still to spare.
Thanks to Andy for lending me a Garmin holder, (navigating would have been a challenge otherwise) and thanks to all the riders for being a great group.

Report:
A select group of the 3 of us set off from Grove. Unfortunately Susan (the original ride leader) and Lorna were both unwell. It was a beautiful sunny morning and it was lovely to be out.
We rode up to Southmoor via Denchworth and Hanney. We thought we’d try the village hall coffee stop as it has been a long while since club riders visited there. There was a choir singing ( I remember going around Christmas several years back when the choir was there and we all joined in the songs). The ladies making the coffee were very pleased to see us and made us very welcome, but we couldn’t really chat over the choir singing so we left quite promptly after our drinks were finished.
We returned via Charney and Asti Stud to Denchworth where Sarah left to return home and Susie and I returned to Grove still in the lovely sunshine.

What a beautiful day for cycling after all the rain lately. The group was large so we split into two with John T leading the second 6 (many thanks - wouldn't have managed without you). We went out via Goosey, Baulking and Fernham then up the first climb of the day to the A420 and the cut through to Faringdon Community College (one person got slightly lost here but we managed to regroup). The coffee shop was excellent as usual - no complaints there. We left Faringdon via Thrupp and up the second hill to Littleworth. Quite quiet on the A420, not so bad, and on to Hatford then to Grove via Gainfield, Charney and Denchworth.

A really enjoyable ride with good company and no problems. Thanks, all!

Following "amendment" to route (may have included Southmoor but this was visited Thursday) and time... six of us set out from OMH.

Weather had brightened up - rain cleared and sun came out - compared to this morning when the ride may have run. so the ride leader - was pleased that reverted to PM, and suspect others were too!

Lovely gentle amble, and were rewarded with some fine views. Road from Lockinge had three huge puddles that had to go "through" rather than round - residue from the morning rain! That was the worst of it though.

Rewarded with a leisurely tea stop at the Grocer Chef, not really warm enough to sit out but lovely refreshments as always.

Eschewed the planned return past Lains Barn, as gather the road was in a bad state, and returned via Wantage

Comparatively short ride for a Saturday but needed to ensure the tea stop reached before closing(!). Priorities, priorities.....

Thanks for a lovely ride, everyone.

New Forest Autumn Colours 3*
Leader:
Jo Little
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
Lyndhurst
Description:
Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. An all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.

The ride will start in Lyndhurst, travelling along Bolderwood and Rhinefield ornamental drives before the first cafe stop at Sway (20 miles). We then go through heathland and villages before the second stop at Bucklers Hard (36 miles). This was an 18th century shipbuilding village on Beaulieu river and still retains much of its original charm. Then its through Beaulieu before returning to Lyndhurst.
48 miles in total, which should allow time to appreciate the forest before returning home in the light.
Parking and the starting point is at Boltons Bench, Beaulieu Road, Lyndhurst, SO43 7DA. This has proven safe and reliable in the past.
I am limiting this ride to 12 people as the roads are narrow and can be busy in places. We will ride in 2 groups a short distance apart, so will be able to meet at cafe stops and view points.
Please book early if you wish to guarantee a place.

Weather:
sunnywindy (fine)
Report:
We left Wantage in the pouring rain but arrived in Lyndhurst to warmth and sunshine. The forest looked amazing, with the leaves changing and the sun shining between the trees. We were lucky enough to see a stag with a small herd of deer, as well as donkeys, ponies and a tiny foal. The first cafe stop, The Forest Deli at Sway, was fantastic and will definitely be used again. We also visited Bucklers Hard, an old shipbuilding village on the Beaulieu river, which was interesting to walk around. Overall, the route was good, with most of the climbing in the first half.
Thank you to Paul for taking the headwind for me on a couple of occasions and also for finding Barry when he took the wrong turning. Thank you to everyone for being such a great group to cycle with. It was an excellent day out.

This could be said to be the first ride we've started from Charlton as it was outside the church that I met up with Sarah and Mila.

It was indeed a beautiful day to enjoy the Autumn colours as we followed the Springline between Wantage and the Harwell campus. Out on the cyclepaths through Kingsgrove, we then kept to the roads as far as Ginge, taking a breather at the top of each hill to enjoy the views. This included a cunning detour via the Lockinge estate road to avoid flooding on the road past Betterton House. There was a lovely panorama to enjoy on the gentle climb up to Betterton on the narrow road that we normally descend. From Ginge we followed NCN544 via the farm track and then Icknield Way into the Harwell campus. The latter track seemed particularly stony, perhaps due to all the recent heavy rain washing out some of the finer material?

The Lightbox cafe was pretty quiet and we enjoyed a wide-ranging conversation over our drinks and snacks. Then we partially retraced our steps to East Hendred and continued via the Icknield Greenway, crossing the bridge of lesser doom over Ginge Brook and back into Wantage through Ardington.

A thoroughly enjoyable and sociable ride. Thanks to Mila and Sarah for your good company.

A ride out into the Cotswolds, parking at Lechlade Garden Centre (or riding out if you need the miles for Strava or somesuch). Numerous stopping opportunities, Northleach is probably favourite.

I was pleasantly surprised to have 9 riders booked on for an away day ride. Half an hour in the car effectively opens up the Cotswolds to us and very pleasant it was!
We started with a coffee at Lechlade Garden Centre - now run by Hilliers - and, very fine coffee it was.
I had apparently managed to plot a route including Northleach and Bibury, including some lanes that none of us recalled travelling.
We had a short delay on the route, waiting for the local hunt to clear the road of their pack of hounds.
Mid-ride coffee and snacks were taken at Lynwood & Co in Northleach - again, fine.
Bibury was as busy as ever, swarming with tourists, numbers apparently swelled by at least one wedding.
The weather played ball - pretty much a perfect autumnal day.
The route is, I think, a 'keeper', running it in reverse may be an enhancement, putting a coffee stop at Northleach more than half way round.
Thanks to all for being a great bunch to ride with.

A lovely Autumn morning full of promise. We headed out to the Letcombes stopping at the top of Holborn Hill for a breather and view of the misty vale as the sun promised to break through. We then went on to The Cantorist for Coffee and a very relaxed chat. Fully refreshed we rode through Westcott Sparsholt and Kingston Lisle to retun via Baulking and Goosey. Unfortunately the sun did not make an appearance although on meeting the 2 star group in Grove we leaned that it was beautiful in Lambourn !
A lovely ride and super company.

Description:
Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Sociable ride of 24-40 km (15-25 miles) at a pace of 18-20km/h (11-13 mph).
Ringing the changes, a ride to Goodies Café in Lambourn. It does take in one challenging section - Blowingstone Hill - going up! Down through Seven Barrows, then a long, gentle uphill to Hackpen, followed by a fun swoop down Hackpen returning via The Letcombes.
A slightly shorter ride than usual, the climb makes up for it.....

Weather:

Report:
Going up Blowingstone Hill appears to have limited the numbers!
6 riders, only two of whom were unassisted.
The weather was distinctly murky but started to lift as we got down into the Lambourn valley.
After a good stop at Goodies Café, we emerged to clear blue skies and warm sunshine. Sadly, as we climbed the hill back to Sparsholt Firs, the chilly gloom, once again, descended.
Distance:
38.40 km (23.86 mi)
