Report:
An eventful ride of about 50 km covering a circular route from Grove via Wantage, Letcombe Regis, Court Hill, A338, Chaddleworth, southern loop around Leckhampstead, Peasemore, Stanmore, West Ilsley, Farnborough, B4494, tea at Henk's house in Wantage, back to Grove. Rain at the beginning threatened to lead to an early curtailment of the ride but conditions soon improved to a very enjoyable level for early January. Incidents started along the back of Grove with a multi-cycle collision leading to the loss of Geoff, Kevin and Tom from the group.
Thereafter a frequent topic of coversation was the hilliness of the course, attracting mostly favourable comment. A fair amount of time was lost soon after West Ilsley during a pucture repair by an uncooperative replacement inner tube which decided to shed its complete valve assembly during the initial inflation. The whole exercise had to be repeated. The downhill run back to Wantage saw a bit more rain but the homemade tea waiting at the end appeared to be adequate compensation.

'Easy Rider' Saturday Ride from Grove
Leader:
Stephen Quartermain
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:

Description:
Sociable easy-paced ride of 45-55 km with tea stop. Lights recommended for journey home.

Heading north-east this month with tea at Smith's Bistro in Ardington towards the end. Out via Denchwoth and the Hanneys to Steventon, Drayton, Sutton Courtenay and Appleford. Then into Didcot and on to Ardington via Harwell village, Featherbed Lane, East Hendred and Ginge. Short stretches off-road on NCN 5 and route 44. Back to Grove via Lains Barn. Total ~30 miles.

Report:
The ride started a few minutes after 1pm after I was a bit late pedalling over from Didcot into the wind. However I met a new rider, Mike Evans, on his way to the start. It was nice to see another new rider, Simon Gibbs and the return of a few familiar faces.

The ride set off through the Denchworth to West and East Hanney and back the way I had cycled over to Steventon. Fortunately there was a nice tail wind and the group made great progress through to Didcot. Negotiating Didcot Broadway on a Saturday afternoon was not probably my best idea but we all got through even if the pace slowed a little. Out of Didcot towards Harwell we faced a headwind and had to cut the ride a little short in order to make it to the tearooms for 3.30pm. I had planned on going into East Hendred and cross the track to Ginge. Chris and Sid went on ahead to make sure the tearooms were aware we were on our way. Nine people stayed for refreshments at the tearoom. Steve Swanton then led a group of riders back to Grove and I led 3 riders in the direction of Abingdon before heading back to Didcot at the top of Steventon hill.
