Benson Veteran Cycle Rally
Leader:
Laurent Chambard
Start Time:
8:30 am
Start Location:
GMS

Riders = 6
Report:
4 riders were brave enough for an early wake-up prior to setting off for Benson on what was a gently undulating ride. Richard J joined just as we arrived, and we arrived just as rallymen and -women were leaving the Sunnyfield green on their marvellous old timers, the riders wearing corresponding period kit.
Robert W. was there on his policeman bike, and would have been prepared to have us have a go on some of his other machines!
It was a wonderful opportunity to ride side-by-side with cycles such as Penny-Farthings or velocipedes (looks like the latter requires serious concentration from the rider for keeping some sort of a straight line...).
A well-earned picnic (with wine, this was an old traditions day) was the occasion for seeing the machines more closely, and also for meeting Oxford City section riders (they happened to be more than us, and made it sure we couldn't ignore it!).
The ride back saw us crossing Didcot and come back to Grove through lovely back lanes in brilliant sunshine, sampling strawberries (but it was too late for tea) at the Q Gardens up Steventon hill.
A very enjoyable day indeed - Keep the date free for next year (first Sunday in July)

Ideal cycling conditions today, mild with some sunshine.
We had a lovely loop before lunch with a welcome coffee stop at the Swan in Radcot en route (second visit in 3 days). After heading West along the B-road to Kingston Lisle, we turned north through Uffington and Fernham to Faringdon. After our stop at Radcot, the sun came out as we looped round through the Cotswold villages of Langford, Broadwell and Kencot, before we (Richard excepted) swooped through the ford at Shilton. We continued along the same route as last Sunday through Swinbrook to Fordwells before turning right to Field Assarts and right again for the long descent into Minster Lovell.
We arrived at the pub at 1:15 some 20 minutes before the fourteen
