Please check website on the morning of the ride if the weather is poor as the ride may be cancelled or the start time changed. This is a pre-bookable ride. A reserve list will be maintained.With Saturday's ride cancelled due to adverse weather, this is your chance to start off the New Year in the right way! A basically flat ride in the vale. On New Year's Day the only local place open will be Costa, so no stop en route with coffee back in Grove. 39 km with options to shorten. |
||
Report:Three club riders, joined by Pip Jackson, gained a few lungfuls of fresh New Year's air.A fresh headwind on the way out but payback was a nice tail wind on the return leg. The odd sizeable puddle told the tale of recent rainfall. The route was designed for cutting short when deemed desirable and the loop around Lyford was abandoned in favour of more coffee and chats time at Costa in Grove. | ||

Riders:David BridgeDavid Jackson Elliott Bogart John Tranter Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 7 Report:A beautiful morning for a ride, the first of 2023. The flat local ride was planned to cater for a newcomer Elliot, who quickly demonstrated that the planned 1* pace was rather slow and so we upped it to that appropriate for the riders a pacy 2*!It was lovely to get out and appreciate the warm morning and clear skies, as we were all enjoying it we extended the ride slightly to return via Hanney a total of 14 miles. We will finish at the Cornerstone cafe in Grove for coffee to meet the 2* group.As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. ||
Riders:Carin TranterDes Higgs Gareth Smith Lorna Swanton Sarah Macaulay Steve Swanton Susan Holdroyd Val Smith Riders = 8 Weather:Report:A good turnout of 8 riders for our first Thursday 1* ride of the year. Good to see Des out on his new ebike, at last!There was light rain falling as we arrived at Old Mill Hall but this soon blew over to be replaced by some very welcome sunshine. After all the recent rain there were a few large puddles about and we were unfortunate enough to be passing through a wet stretch by the railway when a car, approaching too fast, inconsiderately splashed some of the group. Somehow there seemed to be a surprising number of cars about in the Vale today. We enjoyed a leisurely and very sociable ride with stops in each of the villages for a brief rest and a natter. We benefitted from a nice tailwind out to West Hanney and then had to work our way back into the wind through Charney almost to Goosey before we could enjoy a push back home. David B met us as we arrived back at the edge of Grove and then joined us for coffee and cakes at Cornerstone. The 2* group soon arrived as well. Thanks everyone for your good company and a mellow morning. | ||

Riders:Chris MarchantJohn Tranter Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Terry Ryland Riders = 6 Weather:Report:It was so nice to see a little bit of sunshine and it wasn't surprising that a bumper group formed at Old Mill Hall to go out on both the 1* and 2* rides. We managed to battle the headwind quite successfully all the way out to Longcot, and then allowed ourselves to be quietly smug for the next few miles as we took full advantage of the tailwind back. Coffee stop at the Cornerstone was really nice - good to mix in with the 1* gang there.Thanks to everyone for making it such an enjoyable ride. | ||

Email edlittle157@gmail.com This ride is at the shorter end of the half day rides, just on 38 miles/61km. A relatively flat, scenic & simple route taking in some lovely views of the villages of the Vale / Thames Valley & the River Thames. We’ll pass through Uffington, Fernham, Faringdon, Radcot & Clanfield stopping at Aston Pottery for our elevenses. Once refreshed we’ll head out along Shifford, Standlake, Southmoor & West Hanney. Expect to be back in Grove for around 13:00hrs. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Jackson Eddie Little Elliott Bogart John Tranter Joy Arthur Karl Blake Katherine Boyce Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Ten of us met at Grove on a sunny cloudy morning. The first half of the ride was incident free, it was great to see numerous clubs out enjoying the quiet roads between baulking & Uffington. Weather wise we had a mixed bag, at times strong headwind’s, a few light showers which soon fizzled out leaving us with a pretty good ride to Aston Pottery where we all enjoyed some beverages. Cyclists seem to dominate the cafe though not too busy. On the second half of the ride we enjoyed the ride around Shifford stopping at St Mary’s Church for a couple of photos. As we cycled along the A415 Karl suffered a broken gear cable, this played into Karl’s favour as we were close to his home, a quick bike swap & we were on our way homeward bound. Many thanks to Sharon, Roger & John for there secondary ride leading skills, very much appreciated. Thanks to everyone for making this an enjoyable day. | ||

Riders:John TranterKarl Blake Katherine Boyce Roger Postbeschild Steve Swanton Terry Ryland Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Another blustery day, although the rain was, thankfully, a lot lighter and more intermittent than yesterday afternoon!A late change of route to a more North/South offering avoided too much exposure to brisk headwinds. Regrettably, I routed via Hanney, this proved to be a bit of an error as there was a deepish area to traverse just west of Hanney. I had just dried out my boots from yesterday.........oh well! Coffee was taken at Stanford (and for some of us back in Grove), where we met up with Des. Having just checked the stats, this was apparently my 400th club ride. | ||

||
Riders:Andy PixtonEddie Little Elliott Bogart Jo Little Katherine Boyce Lizzie Hardingham Roger Postbeschild Sharon Bedford Riders = 8 Report:A ride of two halves.Despite the dry forecast there was some heavy rain on the way out. Combined with the strong winds (headwinds and crosswinds) and the hills this made it quite a challenging morning. It did cross my mind to abandon on the way down to Lambourn when at one stage we had driving hail into our faces, but knowing the forecast was improving we kept going. We arrived at lunch damp, somewhat chilly and (speaking for myself at least), in need of a rest. We had to wait about 10 minutes at Three Trees Cafe for a table, (note to myself and other ride leaders thinking of using the cafe again they do take reservations), but they were very well organised and the food was yummy. The sun came out in the afternoon to warm us slightly and some of us were actually able to shed a few items of clothing. Although the wind had dropped in intensity when we had a tailwind it still made some of the westerly sections a dream! Well done to new cyclist Elliott who did brilliantly on his first hilly ride. Thanks to a great group. | ||

Report:Very cold but dry conditions led to a cracking ride - where the cracking was the repeated sound of ice on puddles breaking under our wheels. I saw -4.8C on my Garmin, not sure how accurate that is, but once we had climbed Segsbury Hill we were warm enough.We set off with a dream of reaching White Horse Hill. Due to a late start and a puncture, that wasn't realised, but we did make it to Sparsholt Field for a great run down. Then we returned through Childrey and Challow. | ||

RIDE CANCELLED - Monthly 1* Saturday Afternoon Ride - to Longworth | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:RIDE CANCELLED due to persisting risk of ice/slippery conditions. Checked out the Denchworth Road at 3pm on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately, there are still large puddles and pockets of persistent icy slush along the road between the cemetery and railway bridge. With sub-zero temperatures expected again overnight, these are likely to refreeze. So, regrettably, I am cancelling the ride in the interest of rider safety.This month we'll ride northwards to Longworth for refreshments at the Blue Boar Inn. Not too far, fast or hilly! Out via Charney Bassett and return through Southmoor (making use of the bridge over the A420) and Lyford. A round trip of about 16.5 miles. There will be the option of a scenic 2-mile detour to Hinton Waldrist and Longworth Church making use of a bridleway for those that fancy a little extra. Expect to be back in Grove before 4pm. Please let me know by text if you would like to come. Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, on the third Saturday of the month. Leisurely riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph) . Occasional short or gentle climbs. |

All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. This is a pre-bookable ride. TOut through Coxwell, using some quiet back roads to Bampton Garden Centre for lunch (26 miles). The cafe has been re-organised and offers a great menu and seems to have a good seating and ordering system. Report:A cool clear night after a few dry days made for a good ride. We wound through Wantage houses and then out along the canal to Childrey and made the climb at Sparsholt Fields. Crossed the Ridgeway and climbed again a very rutty Seven Barrows.Then back to the Ridgeway and picked up a tailwind to Manor Rd (A33, where we crossed, doubled back, and took the field edge down and climbed again for a Lark Hill descent. | ||
