Oxford Urban Safari | 1* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Redbridge Park and Ride, Oxford, OX1 4XG |
Description:Brand new for 2019, this is a very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside paths and quiet streets to do a 13 mile 'urban safari' around the south and centre of Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is mostly traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Parking is in the Redbridge Park and Ride at the southern end of the Abingdon Road (bring 2 pounds in coins). Note there is a height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions.We head north through the strange sliver of a suburb known as Grandpont, cross the river on the fascinating Gasworks bridge and then head into the centre of town. A mini-tour of Jericho before a VIP coffee stop at St Cross College on St Giles (you only get in if you are friends with the Bursar!). Then I will give you the insider gossip as we pass through the epicentre of Oxford, under Hertford College's Bridge of Sighs, and eventually down to the river at Folly Bridge where we head along the towpath past the College boathouses, pop up into the lovely Iffley village and Rose Hill before continuing along the river to Sandford. We then have a couple of miles back through Kennington before some unexpected underpasses get us back to the start. I'm really pleased with this one - don't miss it! 13 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |

Riders:Alvaro ReyCarin Tranter Des Higgs Diana Whidborne John Tranter Lizzie Long Louise Tranter Nick Portsmouth Robert Treadgold (deceased) Tim Waite Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Really great to see such a good group gathering at Redbridge Park and Ride, with the bonus extra of my sister Louise visiting from Coventry. This was really mostly about sightseeing and exploring more than actual riding - reflected in a very leisurely average speed, but with lots to see along the way.All went according to plan, we cruised through Grandpont, struggled through the crowds in the centre of town and toured Jericho before a very pleasant tea stop courtesy of Greens cafe and St Cross College. Then more crowds past the Bodleian and under Hertford College's famous bridge before heading down to the river at Folly Bridge. A great run along the newly improved towpath was punctuated by a detour into Iffley Village and Rose Hill, before we headed along the also improved path alongside the railway to the top of Kennington. We couldn't resist a little detour down to the river one more time, at Sandford Lock, before heading back on the road through Kennington and the final bit of magic on the underpasses back to the P&R. Thanks to all for a real nice afternoon. | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.All too soon we've reached the end of our Tuesday Evening ride season. For our last 1* outing, a loop around the Vale, heading out to Goosey green, Charney Bassett and back via Lyford and Denchworth. Essentially flat, just under 12 miles. As the nights are drawing in, lights are required. It is also starting to cool off in the evenings, so an extra layer is recommended. |

We stopped briefly in each of Denchworth, Goosey and Charney Bassett to check all was well and a chat. In the gathering gloom lights were most definitely required for the last stretch home and we were back in Grove just before 8pm.Thanks to all those who have helped with leading the 1* rides on a Tuesday this year. It has felt much more like a team effort, making my load a lot easier, which has been much appreciated. I look forward to the resumption next April. And don't forget that Thursday daytime and monthly Saturday afternoon 1* rides continue throughout the year - see you there. | ||

With the nights drawing in the ride was shorter than usual and we were back at around 8pm.The route out as far as the top of Holborn Hill out of Letcombe Bassett was both hilly and largely against the wind. We did have a short stop at the entrance to Challow Cricket Club at top of the hill from East Challow. Those present getting a reminder that this is the venue for the AGM next month. A longer stop at the top of Holborn Hill allowed us to recover before the descents to Childrey and then down to the A417. D-Day 75 Normandy Tour | 3* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:7:00 pm |
Start Location:Whale Island, Portsmouth |
Description:This year's Normandy ride is going to be a little different! 2019 is the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings of 1944 and so the weekend is going to be spent exploring the area along Gold, Juno, Sword and Omaha beaches, staying overnight in Bayeux and finishing off on Sunday with visits to Pegasus Bridge and The Merville Battery. The idea will be to visit a number of key D-Day sites, at which yours truly will give a quick description of why that place was important and the role it played in the landings. The group will travel from Portsmouth to Ouistreham on Friday evening, before returning from France on the Sunday afternoon ferry. The outbound sailing is at 2245 from Portsmouth to Caen with Brittany Ferries. The plan will be to rendezvous at the RN base at Whale Island (full details to be provided in due course) earlier in the evening before enjoying a pub meal in advance of embarkation.Some other admin points: 1. All riders will need to have comprehensive personal travel insurance before they can come on the ride. That cover must include cycling in a foreign country. Remember - your EHIC will (almost certainly) no longer be valid when we travel, and even if it is it doesn't cover being repatriated in the event of injury. 2. Check your passport for validity. Assuming Brexit has happened there are specific rules about how much time you need to have remaining on its dates and you will be refused embarkation if your passport does not meet the requirements. The rules are complicated, so I recommend using the government's checking tool here: https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport 3. Numbers are going to be limited to 14. Anyone wishing to come with us should email me to let me know. Everyone is responsible for making their own ferry and hotel bookings. Full details of each day's ride are included in the next listings for the days in question, but if you want any further information please email me on pethybridgera@yahoo.co.uk or call on 07875 456521. |

D-Day 75 Tour Day 1 | 3* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Ouistreham, France |
Description:The ferry arrives in Ouistreham at 0645, which is early enough for the sun still to be below the horizon, so lights are essential. We will take breakfast on the ferry before disembarkation, as we will need to get going once we are off the boat.The route heads what along the coast, starting along Sword Beach, before passing Juno and Gold and finishing up at Omaha. Along the way we will pause at Arromanches, the gun battery at Longues-sur-Mer, Port-en-Bessin (for coffee), and the US cemetery at Colleville (think Saving Private Ryan). We will then dip inland a bit en route to Pointe du Hoc, and then aim for lunch in Grandcamp-Maisy. After lunch we will head inland to the German cemetery at La Cambe, before heading east again through the Bocage country to our hotel in Bayeux. The recommended hotel is La Campanile. It is a chain type of hotel not dissimilar to a Travel Lodge. No frills but well priced - I have stayed there many times and the breakfast is good. We will aim to take a stroll into Bayeux itself for an evening meal together. Total distance is 68 miles, with 2250ft of climbing. For Normandy trip veterans that is about 10 miles less than St Malo to Vire, and about 600ft less climbing. |
||
Riders:David BridgeEddie Little Guy Pethybridge Jo Little John Davies 2 John Tranter Jon Townsin Neil Bridge Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Riders = 11 Weather:Report:Well, what great day this turned out to be. A very early start after disembarking at Ouistreham found us riding along the edge of Sword Beach just as the sun was rising spectacularly behind some patchy cloud. A stiff northerly breeze accompanied us as we rode westwards passing Juno Beach and then Gold Beach en route to the first stop at Arromanches. We did pause briefly at the site of the new British D-Day memorial, but as a building site up a steep hill decided the extra effort to see it at this time wasn't worth it. From the cliffs above Arromanches we admired the remains of Mulberry B harbour, also know as Port Winston, before swooping down and through the town past the D-Day museum.Some very quiet roads followed as we made our way to Longues Battery, site of four German Kriegsmarine guns, before the coffee stop at Port-en-Bessin. Pain-au-chocolat and café crÚme were the backdrop for the thrilling story of 47 Commando's assault on this strong point, after which a very steep cobbled hill made everyone glad we were not having to fight our way up it against enemy fire. Next stop was the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, made famous by "Saving Private Ryan". A spectacular site, and very American, with superb views down to Omaha Beach. After a pause for remembrance we cycled on along the beach to the memorial to the 29th US Infantry, before enjoying a well-earned lunch at a café overlooking the beach. Post lunch, and after another hill, we visited Pointe-du-Hoc, a rocky promontory assaulted by American Rangers against seemingly impossible odds. The memorial at the bunker gives prime views to both Omaha and Utah Beaches, and shows what a vital site this was to capture. Having taken lunch early we missed out Grandcamp Maisy and headed to the German Cemetery at La Cambe. This was in major contrast to the American equivalent, and even in the sunshine it had a sombreness very different to the brightness of Collevile. After La Cambe it was time to turn back eastwards and head of Bayeux and our hotel. The route followed some lovely roads in the quiet Norman countryside, with generally rolling but often tiring hills to keep us interested. Arrival at the hotel was very welcome, and was achieved with plenty of time to relax and recover before going into ton for dinner. We enjoyed a super meal at 'Le Domesday' restaurant, right next to the cathedral, accompanied by a number of appropriate alcoholic beverages. Everyone slept very well thereafter. | ||

D-Day 75 Tour Day 2 | 3* |
---|
Leader:Richard Pethybridge |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Bayeux, France |
Description:After breakfast we will depart eastwards from Bayeux, once again enjoying the Normandy 'Bocage' countryside. We will visit the Hillman Bunker site near Colleville-Montgomery (guess who they renamed their village in honour of...) before crossing the Caen Canal at Pegasus Bridge. After a brief stop at the Ranville CWGC cemetery we will loop around via the Merville Battery site back to Pegasus Bridge and then the final run along the canal to Ouistreham.Total distance is 41 miles and 1300ft of climbing, once again 10 miles and about 500ft less climbing than previous years. This will allow a more leisurely start. I have yet to decide exactly where we will take lunch, so the route may change slightly depending on opportunities. The ferry departs at 1630 so we will aim to be at the terminal in plenty of time at about 1500. |

Riders:David BridgeEddie Little Guy Pethybridge Jo Little John Davies 2 John Tranter Jon Townsin Neil Bridge Nicole Pethybridge Richard Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Riders = 11 Weather:Report:After an excellent breakfast and a not-too-early 0830 start we headed east from Bayeux for some 25 miles through some amazing countryside to our first stop at the 'Hillman' defensive position above Colleville-Montgomery. Atop a commanding hill this was the site of a heroic assault by the Suffolk Regiment. A quick replan of the route allowed us a gravel-track-free ride to Pegasus Bridge and coffee at the famous Café Gondrée, the first building to be liberated on D-Day.Next stop was the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Ranville, again a contrast with the other two and a deeply moving experience to see the graves of so many young men who had sacrificed their lives for the cause of freedom. A slog up a hill followed by a delightful descent took us to the Merville Battery, site of a famous but not entirely successful parachute assault by the British 6th Airborne Brigade, and then lunch at another beachfront café in Merville itself. Not the quickest service, the food when it arrived was great and the Norman cider imbibed while waiting was even better. Sadly the wait meant we missed out on the museum at Pegasus Bridge (something for next year perhaps...) but a nice flat ride took us back to the ferry and our homebound trip. | ||

Ride and Stride for Historic Churches 2019 | 2* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This Saturday sees the annual Oxfordshire Ride and Stride event in aid of the Oxfordshire Historic Churches Trust (further details can be found at: https://ohct.org.uk/ride-stride/ ).On the day over 500 churches and chapels in Oxfordshire are open to welcome visitors and the idea is to either stride or ride (awheel or ahoof) to visit as many as you like. It is a great opportunity to visit some of our local historic churches, some of which are rarely open to the public Many provide refreshments. Having ridden with friends for a number of years, Gareth and I decided to run it as a club ride last year. It was great fun with a highlight for Steve and Eddie of climbing over the bells to reach the roof of the church tower at Shrivenham! So the plan is for an all-day ride at 2* pace with (obviously) a lot of stops. Some will be brief and some longer depending on particular points of interest and the temptation of refreshments. We plan to start as per usual at 9:30 from OMH and head eastwards. Our route will take us to Wallingford for lunch and on to Dorchester Abbey which has a wonderful volunteer-run tearoom. Overall we are hoping to visit up to 31 churches starting in Lockinge. We'll be using quite a few stretches of easy off-road, which will be fun (this includes a bridleway across the meadows from Dorchester to Days Lock) It's not compulsory to do the whole ride and we can advise on routes home. For those who fancy the whole day, we expect to reach our last church (probably Drayton or Steventon) just before 6pm. And we'll expect to be back in Grove before 7pm - but lights recommended. Although participants are encouraged to seek sponsorship, we normally make a donation. This is split between the OHCT and a church you can nominate. Please contact Steve (07857 527990) or Gareth (07817 701644) for more information. It's an interesting and fun day out and a very social day awheel. Do join us for some or all of the day. |
||
Report:Steve came up with an excellent route for the ride and the weather was also just right - a sunny day with little wind. The aim to be to visit as many churches as practical within the time window of the 'Ride and Stride' event (10:00 to 18:00). Five riders turned up for the day's activities. After some chat at the start we reached the first church in Lockinge at 10am. From there we worked our way through the Hendreds (using some track) and out via Chilton and had lunch in Hagbourne. We made the planned target of Wallingford early afternoon - with a chance to visit many churches there. Then on to Dorchester - successfully getting to the Abbey tea rooms before closure. Our final church stop was at Applepeford - where we arrived pretty much bang on 6pm. As the person there had only seen two other riders there during the entire day we felt pleased to boost the numbers. Following that it was a steady ride back to Grove for 7-ish.With 27 churches visited, many offering biscuits and a couple even having cake for the riders, it was a very enjoyable tour with frequent interesting stops. Easy on A Sunday Morning Off Road Ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:Once up to the Ridgeway and then mostly flat, with plenty of woodsy singletrack. I have a few new bits for you this week. Pace adjusted to whoever comes, and then a bit slower because it's Sunday morning.Regular off-road rides for 2018 we are toning these down and keeping them closer to Wantage. Free parking at The Beacon, and meet at Wantage Market Place, by King Alfred. |
||
Report:A glorious day for the last 'Easy on a Sunday' of the year. Sunshine, and a gentle breeze so it didn't get too hot. And four very different bikes: from zero suspension, to 150mm at both ends - they all worked fine for this route!The route out of Wantage was familiar, the cycle track East, then up Goddards Brook and Bitham Wood to the Ridgeway. We breezed along with a following wind. Splendid views to be seen - Didcot sans cooling towers, but still with one tall chimney. We went down at Ginge, taking advantage of the track that twists around the main route town. Unknown to many, this added a bit of interest, even at low speed. Then we picked our way around Harwell in the woods. In the near-noon sun, the shade was welcome. The trees were close on the wider handlebars, but we all survived - although Barry clipped something just after the hard bit! Angling North was got to Rowstock, then a left and right brought us down into Steventon. Unusual for a Wantage ride, although familiar for me as we passed 300m from my house. We weren't stopping though and headed off for an opportunistic trip around the fields between Steventon and Ardington. Normally the bridleways are muddy or overgrown, but just now they had been cleared for harveting and were riding well. We saw two tall deer prancing across the fields. (I noted the potential post-Brexit food supply). The track zigged and zagged (I'd rehearsed this a few times with OS Maps on my phone) and finally popped us out on the A417 just opposite Ardington. Resisting the Boar's Head we rode back to Wantage. A very pleasant 'countryside tour'. I think any longer and we'd have wanted a proper lunch stop as we were all feeling ready for lunch by the end! | ||

Occasional short or gentle climbs.Heading out to Hendred , tea at Steventon and then i would like to try a route that cuts across to Venn Mill turn right a short ride on the A338 and then a left to Lyford Hanney and then Grove UPDATE 21/09/19 Just to mention I checked the route marked as a Bridleway across to Venn Mill, but half way across the track just disappears so i think it will be safer to cycle back along Cow Common to Hanney and then through Denchworth and home |

RIDE CANCELLED - Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:RIDE CANCELLED.ALTHOUGH THE THUNDERSTORMS ARE FINISHING EARLIER, THERE IS NOW A HEAVY RAINSTORM PREDICTED WHICH WOULD FOLLOW US ROUND. I HAVE THEREFORE DECIDED TO CANCEL THE RIDE. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. A hilly ride covering Hackpen Hill and then onto Ashbury and up Foxhill. We will then go past Wroughton and Broad Hinton before having lunch at Mercer's in Marlborough. They offer a range of food including burgers, scampi and chips, jacket potatoes and omelettes, as well as some highly recommended cakes. We wil then go past Ramsbury and Woodland St Marys before Great Shefford and then turning off the A338 towards Farnborough and then Chain Hill. This ride is 101km (63 miles) with 1148m of climbing. The whole day involves either climbing or descending, so will be a tough ride, but hopefully we'll be rewarded with some good views and, possibly, some new lanes to cycle on. |

Riders:David BridgeDes Higgs Diana Whidborne Eve Thornton John Groves Karl Blake Lorna Swanton Patrick O'Leary Paul Bentley Tim Waite Riders = 10 Weather:Report:The rain cleared long before we set off, and the sun shone down for most of the ride, which we took at a steady 1* pace, except where an advance party went off to make sure we didn't all arrive at Stanford Coffee Shop at the same time. I'd wondered if the bridle path from Longworth to Hinton Waldrist would be muddy, but Des assured us it would be fine, and fortunately he was right - it's such a pretty route! And the new tarmac on the road from Denchworth to Charney Bassett looks a lot smoother than the repairs in the Denchworth dip. Thanks to everyone for your company. | ||

Description:Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.We'll head out passing through the villages of Charney Bassett & Buckland.Then we can enjoy the decent of Buckland Hill passing over the River Thames at Tadpole Bridge. We'll then head on through to Bampton & Clanfield. We are expected!! Once we are all refreshed we'll head out along some more quite lanes passing through Langford & Little Faringdon. We'll then have a small section of the A417 to cycle along Buscot through to Faringdon with only one small hill! After we have passed through Faringdon we'll cross over the A420, then we'll head on through to Fernam & Baulking arriving back in Grove just before 14:00hrs. Ride distance 40mi/64km. |

We arrived in thevillage of Filkins's for our tea stop a little damp. Our tea stop was excellent! As we left Filkins's we picked up a strong headwind, but by the time we reached the A417 Buscot - Farringdon, weather conditions were a lot calmer giving us a pleasant ride back to Grove. Many thanks to Steve for sweeping & to everyone for being a wonderful group | ||
