3* Saturday Half Day Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.PLEASE NOTE THIS RIDE STARTS FROM WANTAGE MARKET PLACE. It seems only right that in our anniversary year we do one of Henks rides. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I have heard enough about him from others to know he was a splendid crafter of rides and this was one of his best. The route has been tweaked slightly from last year to replicate Henks original. Out through the Letcombes, on to Lambourn, a delightful wiggle to Hungerford before going over the Common to Kintbury. We'll return via Boxford and the Downs and the delightful swoop down Chainhill and back to Wantage. 65km with just over 600metres of climbing. We'll have a tea stop at either the Tutti Pole at Hungerford or Saddleback. |

Riders:Andy CowanChris Bailey Des Higgs Jenny Gower Jo Little Joy Arthur Karl Blake Katherine Boyce Nicole Pethybridge Richard Hypher Richard Pethybridge Sharon Bedford Steve Swanton Terry Penn Riders = 14 Weather:Report:A sunny afternoon ride despite the appalling weather for much of the week. Although the market place was busy, the 14 of us did not cause chaos as we gathered. A steady pace saw us up on the Ridgeway at Sparsholt Firs. The views as lovely as ever and then a slightly constrained swoop down to Lambourn with the only real headwind of the ride. We said goodbye to Des as we wiggled through Lambourn, cutting off the corner. We didn't stop for tea at Terry and Jennys, despite passing close to their front door and then another climb out of Eastbury. There are some lovely roads up above the Lambourn Valley. Once we arrived in Hungerford, we took Terry's advice and used the new café in the reclamation centre as you enter Hungerford. A good choice, good cakes and very efficient service as well as a pleasant table shaded by trees - who can ask for more . The Common to Kintbury is always a winner and once I was guided to the right road, we meandered our way back down to the canal, saying goodbye to Nicole and Richard on the way. The A4 was quiet as we crossed it and we managed the interesting lane down to the Boxford road without incident. A mechanical before the Ridgeway villages left Chris without a freewheel but he managed the rest of the ride without further issues. Before long we were saying goodbye to Jenny and Terry and then it was the glorious return to Wantage via Chain Hill. Thanks to Richard P and Terry for doing sweep duty and to everyone for contributing to a great afternoons cycling. | ||

Easy on a Sunday morning Off Road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Regular off-road rides for 2018 we are toning these down and keeping them closer to Wantage.Free parking at The Beacon, and meet at Wantage Market Place, by King Alfred. The rides will be 15-20 miles, on quiet local tracks through the woods, and maybe up to the Ridgeway. Pace (effort not speed) equivalent to 2*, best on a mountain bike, but a cyclocross bike and if dry a robust hybrid will be fine. Call/email Robin if you would like to know more. |

Riders:Barry BakerClare Hazell David Lynch Des Higgs Douglas Gunn James Bosley Karl Blake Kirsty Gunn Richard Ashford Robin Tucker Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Great day and a great ride. It was a real pleasure to see so many people out on their knobbly tyred bikes. I was a little nervous given the heavy rain on Thursday and a little more on Friday, but a dry Saturday (at least in weather) had improved things greatly. We set off on the cycle path East of Wantage, then headed up by Goddards Brook. On such a day we shouldn't miss the Ridgeway views, and we might as well get the climbing done early in the ride. This is also one of the gentlest way up, and no-one really had a hard time either on the first section, or the second in the shade of Bitham Woods. Des provided a bit of comic relief on the top when he missed a gear and slipped into the edge of a muddy puddle, but no harm done. We then cruised East along the top of the ridge, soaking in the sunshine and the views. Apart from a few deeper puddles retaining some rainwater, the trails were in good condition. We saw a few walkers, horse riders and even a carefully-loaded bikepacker who looked like he was on a long journey. 200m after Scutchamer's Knob we turned left and headed down to the corner of Harwell Campus - it's a fun descent, although a bit bumpy in the second part, you have to hang on and keep the bike pointing forwards. More sedate riding followed, first a grass byway, then into the woods dodging between the trees, then turning towards Rowstock, repeating that pair. The woody trails seemed especially popular - you can enjoy them slowly, and if you go even a little bit quicker the corners tighten up and become a steering challenge. By this time we were headed back West towards Wantage again. We followed the NCN route, and even though one or two were interested to have a look we avoided all temptation to head to the Ginge Brook crossing (aka the Bridge of Doom - more for its appearance than any actual doom befallen). Instead, between a couple of road sections, we snuck in another cheeky wooded interlude. It was great to hear the positive comments: "Off-road riding is much more fun than on-road" and even "You've made an old man very happy". I'll have to think hard to come up with a better route for July! | ||

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This week, a longer but essentially flat loop around the Vale visiting Denchworth, Charney Bassett and Stanford-in-the Vale, returning via 'Park Lane'. A round trip of about 14 miles. Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Riders:Carin TranterDiana Whidborne Douglas Gunn Kirsty Gunn Lorna Swanton Martyn Wigmore Paul Penfold Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:An evening that just seemed to get nicer and nicer the longer we were out.Apart from a close shave for me with an impatient overtaking motorist as we approached Charney Bassett, an otherwise straightforward ride to Stanford with a nice tailwind on the way to Gainfield cross-roads. We took a break on Stanford church green beside the church, a most pleasant spot. I would thoroughly recommend a walk around the churchyard next time. Tonight the long grass (set aside for wildlife) and a large chestnut tree were beautifully back-lit in the evening light. Approaching Park Lane, we found the road to be closed for resurfacing. Nothing ventured... we started along it to see whether we could get through, soon coming up to recently laid but dry tarmac. Lovely. Further on, the old road had been partly scraped away in preparation for the new surface, so a few lumps and knobbles to contend with, but nothing as bad as some of our potholed town roads. We were soon through to Goosey Wick without hold-up. Back in Grove about 8:15 after a most relaxed ride. Thanks everyone for coming and to Martyn for unofficial sweeping duties. | ||

2* Saturday All Day Ride | 2* |

Leader:Nicole Pethybridge |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This will be a little unusual as an ALL DAY 2* ride. I ran it last year as 2* riders do like to venture a little further afield but at a steady pace.NOTE Start time -9.00 am We will repeat the ride from last year. This takes us from Grove to Uffington, through Shrivenham and out to Highworth where where the old Bakery is under new management and are expecting us. From there we will skirt north of Swindon and head over to the Cotswold Water Park around Ashton Keynes After another stop if we wish at the South Cerney we turn and head back towards Kempsford just south of Fairford Air Base. From here to up the hill into Faringdon and then just the familiar route home. We have opportunities to stop at Highworth and South Cerney and again in Lechlade or Faringdon if we need it. A long ride - 63 miles but taken at a leisurely pace so that all can enjoy it. I would expect us to be back between 4 and 5 depending on how many stops we take. |

Arm warmers and jackets were donned and we headed out towards Uffington in the usual fashion. Through Shrivenham we headed further afield and made quick work of the hill up to Highworth. The Old Bakery is under new management and was very cycling friendly. They had reserved tables for us after my call earlier in the week and we tucked into some very good cakes.Katherine left us here to head back for some afternoon commitments and the remainder rode towards the new housing development of North Swindon. Once through here we were in the Costwold water park and some lovely flat and easy riding. The sun had come out and before long we were at our lunch stop and again quick service and some tasty lunches were eaten, now outside in the warm. Steve left us here to find the source of the Thames and we cycled towards Fairford. Susie gave us some demonstrations of her magic bike and also a route to avoid Faringdon, as afternoon tea wasn't required. Back in really good time after a steady ride it was a lovely way to spend the day. Thanks to the great group that all kept together. | ||

Riders:Andy PixtonEddie Little Hugo Pile Jenny Gower Katherine Boyce Nick Dunton Sharon Bedford Terry Penn Riders = 8 Weather:Report:As always, this route was challenging but rewarding. Weather was perfect: cool for the morning hills and sunny and warm in the afternoon when we were spinning through the flatlands. My nemesis - the road from Lane End to Marlow - delivered yet again. No spectacular blowouts this time but a motorist, who seemed not to understand the concept of giving way to oncoming traffic when his side of the road was blocked by road-works, almost flattening me, eliciting a hasty emergency stop and some impressive swearing. At least the resulting adrenalin helped me up Winter Hill. Jenner’s was relatively quiet for a change: we were the only cyclists there. The second half of this ride is admittedly rather mundane but Hugo’s suggestion of simply reversing the first half was quickly vetoed by those of us whose legs needed a rest. The traditional ice-cream stop at Theale Co-Op was welcome. The final sections through the Bradfield rollers and Dark Lane were quickly dispatched and we were back at the start by 4.15. A great group and a pleasure to lead a ride with so little hassle. | ||

This will be a followed by an easier 2* ride next week for those who would like to give 2* a try. This ride goes around Wantage and out to the twin villages of Letcombe Regis and Letcombe Bassett. Then there is a little hill before we swoop down to Childrey, past the duck pond and then more descending to Goosey and home. 14 miles at our usual leisurely pace. Everyone I've ridden with this year on the 2* rides is more than capable of celebrating the longer evenings with a ride up White Horse Hill. We will go the most direct route, via the Childrey Bridleway and then the spring line villages. Everyone will climb at their own pace and there will be plenty of time at the top to admire the view and take photos. We'll return via Uffington, Baulking and Goosey. |

The sun came out as we reached the top and took time to admire the glorious vista of the Vale of White Horse. We all made it down without incident and Karl played lollipop man, making sure everyone crossed the road safely. We said goodbye to Brian as he took the more direct route back Some stretched their legs on the Baulking road and then we were back in Grove and got swept up by the returning 3* riders. Then back via Lambourn, Letcombes etc |
||
Riders:Andy CowanFrank Schroer Iain Kent Jason Jones Phil Ward Ruth Fisher Riders = 6 Weather:Report:On an initially dull looking evening 6 of us set off with a flat start out to Bourton with a tailwind giving us a nice pace with the ride leader mostly on the front (where they are supposed to be!).This is where the clouds slowly made way to give a sunny end of the day, just in time to give us nice sceneries opening up whilst going into the hilly part of the ride. The pace did only drop a bit on that as the group was (mostly) evenly matched tonight and hardly any waiting was required. I think everyone enjoyed the slight diversion away from the straight Foxhill - Baydon road by means of the quieter road that crosses the M4 twice and had a pleasant, quick downhill section and a tasty climb - apparently the road conditions were better than what some experienced there earlier in the year . A quick drop into Lambourn followed by the climb on the other side of Hackpen followed by another quick drop on the other side and then through the Letcombe lead us to Windmill hill and East Challow before riders (including myself) starting to make their way home in Wantage. In fact, only a few of us needed to get back to Grove and agreed to do so by themselves. 64km in total in 2h34mins with 28.5 km/h moving average by the time they got there I have been told (so perfectly in the upper end of the 4 star speed bracket - despite the hills !) A few returns need to be mentioned here, first of all Andy rode his first 4 star ride since the end of August 2016 due to what happened since and had no problem at all with following the pace despite it was one of the faster rides this year with some vertical meters as well towards the end. The other return is a road ride with a gps for myself, having been disappointed with the early generations of cycling gps's I had not bothered spending money on one for a long time but have to say I am impressed with the one I got now. | ||

Report:Firstly, a big welcome to Bruce who joins us for the first time.Tonight's ride was on good, dry tracks which offered good grip and speed. We went out to Wantage via Crab Hill, which still presents rutty problems in places, before heading East towards Lockinge, via the bridle path at the bottom of Lark Hill. From there we took the low lying tracks to Chilton and climbed to the Ridgeway from there. A quick blast along the Ridgeway Westwards saw us at the top of the point to point course in good time for a fast descent back to Lockinge, via Knights Drop and to the Nelson for dinner and a pint. | ||

Easy Saturday Afternoon Ride | 1* |

Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.SATURDAY MORNING UPDATE: the weather is not perfect, but the ride will certainly go ahead. We can decide when we get to the ford how brave we are feeling about any further amphibious exploring! This interesting ride takes us to Duxford ford on the river Thames - if the weather is warm then I suggest we cross the ford (riding or paddling, depending on how brave you are feeling) and explore the island in the middle of the Thames there. On the way we pass through some lovely seldom explored parts of the village of Longworth. No particular cafe options available, so I suggest bringing a snack (or buying from the shop we will pass in Southmoor) and we will have a stop on the green in Hinton Waldrist. Approx 20 miles in total. |

Riders:Carin TranterDiana Whidborne John Tranter Lorna Swanton Mandy Wassell Martyn Wigmore Michael Tayler Philip Blampied Ruth Blampied Steve Boreham Riders = 10 Weather:Report:Firstly, a big welcome to Phil and Ruth for their first ride with us.Distinctly dodgy weather at the start - cool and breezy with some dark clouds around. Sure enough, a bit of rain starting falling as we left Grove. We deployed the usual deterrent of donning waterproofs and sure enough it stopped in a few miles. We approached the Southmoor footbridge by the road less travelled (the one with the hairpin bend), but everyone coped very well with this test of extreme bike handling skills. Longworth was lovely and we had a look inside the church as it was open. And so to the ford, via the bridleway across to Hinton Waldrist. We had it to ourselves, but the river was flowing pretty strongly with some serious currents and about 20cm of water across the ford. New boy Phil decided to go for it, but then discovered just how strong the current was by being very nearly swept off the crossing. Interesting... Oddly, no-one else took up the challenge so we headed back up the hill to have a snack break on the lovely village green at Hinton Waldrist. After that it was a nice mellow ride back to Grove - a few tired legs towards the end, but the group stayed together really well. | ||

CUK Oxfordshire 125 miles - Follow the Thames | 3* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Wallingford Market Place |
Description:Follow the Thames from its source all the way to Wallingford. At 125 miles 200km, this is a great way to stretch beyond the regular Century distance and set a new benchmark. We will ride from Wallingford, upriver through Abingdon, Oxford, Eynsham (25 miles/coffee) and Lechlade (50 miles/lunch) to the source of the Thames near Cirencester. Ideally, we'll have time stroll the few hundred metres of footpath off the road to the official source - at about our 75 mile point. Then, after taking some more refreshments in Kemble or nearby we'll head East towards the Ridgeway and roughly follow the spring line. We'll stop for a meal at the Fox & Hounds at Uffington before returning to Wallingford. In theory it's all downhill - in practice, there may be a few small undulations, but the route overall is quite flat. We'll stop every 25 miles for refreshment and ride at a moderate pace, similar to the Century rides. So this will be a long day - 10pm even if everything goes exactly to plan. The late finish is also why it's on a Saturday. We will finish in the dark so bring lights and money for food & drink. Please let me know you are coming so I can book the main food stops for the right number of people. NOTE it is the day of Wallingford Carnival. Please do not park in Wallingford on the carnival route: http://www.wallingfordcarnival.org.uk/about.html |

This inevitably slowed us down a bit and we were a bit later than planned to our first coffee stop in Eynsham. From there the time pressure seemed to be on us, or on me, and I was conscious of driving the group on at ‘a fair old pace’ for most of the day – maybe what you would think of as a 3* pace for a 50-mile ride, rather than a typical Century pace. I’m glad to say that the group was in very good shape and responded well. We were helped by the largely flat route and various helpers on the front. That gave us time for some sightseeing to see ‘Old Father Thames’ (a statue just outside Lechlade), and a half-mile walk to see the official (but very dry) source of the Thames near Kemble. The railway café at Kemble turned out not to be open so we rode at pace to the Cotswold Water Park café, catching it just before it closed, but just after it stopped serving hot drinks. That made a proper break and a hot dinner at the 100-mile point in the Fox and Hounds at Uffington even more welcome. After that, the final 25 miles to Wallingford, arriving just before 10pm, weren’t too bad. The ride was hard work, but we all felt good for having kept up such a pace. Picking the target had constrained the route, so we sometimes were on busier roads then you would otherwise choose. But overall it was a ride we’ll all remember whether it was the peak of our 2018 or just ‘training’ for the next one  (the 200 mile County Boundary ride in July). | ||

Solstice Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:4:00 am |
Start Location:Wantage Market Place |
Description:So as promised here's this years solstice ride. This years ride is slightly longer (130km) but slightly less hilly (1100metres) and in particular the ending is less tough .We'll start by wending our way up to the Ridgeway via Chainhill to watch the sunrise before heading off to Great Shefford via Brightwalton and then on to Ashbury, Fox Hill and Chisledon. Here we'll use the 24 hour garage for a first breakfast stop - coffee and pastries! Then on to Avebury and Devises before returning via Hungerford (second breakfast at Tutti Pole) and then returning to Wantage via Lambourn and the Letcombes. This is a tough ride but well worth the effort - some exceptional views and because we are going so early we get to take roads not usually suitable for group rides. Please make sure you have lights and snacks. It would be great if you could let me know you are coming, so if necessary I can let the Tutti Pole know we are coming. |

Riders:Andy CowanEddie Little Hugo Pile Jerry Bird Jo Little Katherine Boyce Sharon Bedford Yvonne Bird Riders = 8 Weather:Report:8 of us were up before the larks and gathered in the Market Place, where only one group of revellers were still waiting for a taxi. As we crested the first of the hills and were in open country for the first time, all the clouds were tinged with pink in the pre-dawn. With so much cloud we skipped the Ridgeway viewing as we expected no sunrise spectacle. Our loss, as we approached Great Shefford we paused to admire what we could of the rapidly disappearing sunrise. As we crossed and recrossed the Ridgeway on a number of occasions we all tried to ignore the moisture in the air, the strong headwind and the dark clouds over Wiltshire.By our first breakfast we had raced with deer (they gave up first ), admired a barn owl, not run over a fox, watched numerous hares haring away and seen a buzzard starting its first flight of the day. The facilities at the 24 hour garage were not as good as previously but we all welcomed the coffee as we gradually warmed up. Onward to Avebury, passing the white horse on the other Hackpen Hill and eventually remembering to pause in Avebury to admire the central stones. Once we had climbed out of Avebury and dropped into the Vale of Pewsey, we stopped to see another white horse behind us - this one in need of TLC. After negotiating Pewsey, it seemed no time at all before we were in Crofton and back on familiar territory. The Tuti Pole in Hungerford, were quiet - well it was only 9.30 - and produced hearty breakfasts for us all. Jerry and Eddie had mechanicals in the final stretch but it did not stop them from completing the ride. A fantastic mornings riding. Despite my lack of speed on the hills, everyone was very patient and good natured. Whilst the rest of us went home to put our feet up, Andy carried on for another 90kms | ||

Leader:Gareth Smith |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:A flat ride around the Vale this evening heading to West Hanney via the Cow Lane track and then to Lyford, with the option for an extra loop to Charney Bassett if the sun is shining. |

Not likely to be very hilly. ***BRIDGING RIDE***This is the second of our Bridging Ride series designed to help those who would like to progress to the next level of cycling. As such it will be ridden at the lower end of the pace range. Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). We are going to use a classic loop around the north of the Vale - one we used in the standard 2* programme at the beginning of the season. We go out through Denchworth to West Hanney, up the lovely smooth tarmac to Southmoor, and then the gentle drop to Charney Bassett. A final loop by Asti Stud gets us back to Denchworth and the railway bridge road back to Grove. A great chance for 1* riders to step up a little. The ride is dead flat so we will just tweak the average speed up a bit and see how we get on. But - no-one will be left behind, so no need to worry! 16 miles / 26km |

Back together we headed into a head wind towards the final climb up Ashbury Hill followed by another speedy decent towards Shrivenham delayed only by someone losing a water bottle. From there the group lost shape as it was every man or woman for themselves with Ruth, Frank and Jason putting the Hammer down. Once again the group came together in Fernham for the final push homewards. Frank split off at Charney Bassett to add a few extra miles to his ride and the rest cycled together with the usual Denchworth dash. No idea who won as I wasn`t anywhere near the front, my money would be on Ruth, who picked up more QOM`s to add to her collection, just pipping Jason. It was good to see some new faces including Darren,Martin,Mike and Richard stepping up to 4* and once again many thanks to Hugh for sweeping. | ||

We came across the road closed signs and cycled around them, enjoyed the traffic free roads, and around the sign at the other end, we had got away with it , Or so we thought! We then came across a digger, digging, completely blocking the road. They advised they would be done in about 25 minutes is we wanted to wait. We debated for a while, then sent Des forward to negotiate. I'm not sure what Des said, but the digger stopped and we all squeezed past, to continue on our climbs. We climbed through the Letcombes, and again up to the Ridgeway, stopping every so often to regroup. Shortly after starting the descent to Lambourn we took the left turning to take the Sheep Drove road. The signs are a little off putting as the say it's a strictly private road (the grass verge at the side of the road is a bridleway)... and the later signs all say in the small print that walkers, horseriders and cyclists are welcome. The Sheepdrove route is my favourite route into Lambourn, its a long time since I last cycled that way, and a thoroughly enjoyed the gentle descent, lovely scenery and traffic free road In Lambourn, the Honesty Cafe made us welcome, after cakes and drinks, we climbed again over the Ridgeway, this time the gentle ascent up through Seven Barrows, then down Blowingstone and Fawler hills, before the last few flat miles to return to Grove at about 4:30 | ||

Report:A select little group of four of us - that is, after the leader arrived, having been delayed(!) my apologies.A very warm welcome to Gemma on her first ride with us. Your humble leader's duty was very ably assisted by Martyn, not least with some gems of local knowledge along the way, plus selecting a road down from Lockinge to Ardington that I had not been along before! It shaved a little off the anticipated route, enabling us to detour a bit in Ardington, to point out the good local pub! A nice decent past Lains Barn, (I note that the 2star ride did the ascent past Lains Barn, so we had the better deal.....), then Carin left us, and met us at the pub. We three continued on via the Hanneys, with two of us stopping at the pub to meet up with the other groups, taking in the essential post ride booze & grub. Nice way to finish. See you next time! | ||

We welcomed Joe a new rider as we split into two evenly matched groups to head out to the White Horse.Despite or perhaps aided by the warmth we spun easily to Uffington and made our way up the first section of the hill. Crossing the spring line road the work began but everyone made it up to the top. Well done to those doing it for the first time. We rejoined both groups for a photo opportunity at the top and took in the glorious view whilst getting our breath back. It was on the return that the fun started. The leader was temporarily confused as to whether she still lived in Shrivenham or was heading back to Grove and that meant the groups who had descended separately met at the junction to Fernham Road. Being courteous at this point and following the Highway Code group 2 now had right of way and went ahead. However with a rush of blood to the head and the legs a swift overtaking manoeuvre was conducted. All in good spirits if not a little unusual. Hugo and Nick could not resist and joined in. Only for Hugo to stop abruptly not long after with a puncture. This all resulted in a nice mixing of the groups heading back to Denchworth. A wonderful sunny ride with equal high spirits was capped off nicely in the beer garden of The Fox. A great club evening. Thanks to Katherine and all the sweeps | ||

Leader:Nick Stokell |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:The Chase NT Car Park, Woolton Hill |
Description:All-day touring ride of 100km at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph) with about 1000 m of climbing. Not suitable for irregular riders. We did this route last June and it proved popular so I think it's worth repeating. The toughest of the hills are in the first 30 km when the legs are fresh, but the views of the Hampshire countryside outstanding, and the roads mostly quiet. The ride is loosely based on the Watership Down Audax route but in the reversed (i.e. anti-clockwise) direction, and replacing the straight (& rather busy) A272 towards Winchester with a meander along the Test Valley. There are no cafe opportunities much before the proposed lunch stop (at 52 km) - Waitrose Farm Shop Cafe on the Leckford Estate, so bring some snacks. After a relaxed after-lunch ride along the Test Valley we can have a tea stop at Whitchurch or Laverstoke before the climb onto Watership Down itself. It would be useful to have some idea of numbers so please let me know if you are coming by Thursday 28 June. Meet at The Chase National Trust Car Park (free), off Station Road, Woolton Hill (https://goo.gl/maps/gFpjhUzQUbG2). Directions from the A34: Driving south past Newbury on the A34, leave at the A343 junction signed 'Highclere, Wash Common'. Turn left at the roundabout signed 'Newbury, Wash Common'. Then 2nd left, signed 'Enborne Row, East Woodhay, Ball Hall' and also for The Furze Bush Inn and The Yew Tree Garden Centre. On crossing under the A34, take the first left into Station Road.
