Tuesday evening 1* Ride 1*
Leader:
Carin Tranter
Start Time:
6:30 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Our leisurely and sociable 10-mile club rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of about 10 miles at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph, following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way.

Slightly longer 1* ride via Charney Bassett and along the bridleway to Pusey. Return back to Charney and possible extra loop to Lyford
Approx 14 miles if we do the Lyford loop.

Sheena Arnold

Tess Evans
Riders = 8

Weather:
sunny
Report:
A lovely sunny evening with a breeze gave us a fun ride out to Pusey along the bridleway. A nearly all ladies ride except John came along as back up although we did think we would manage!
The bridleway was unexpectedly rather overgrown with many doubting the leader's directions when we dived off into the woods! After the woods came the barley and maize field but we still managed to get through along the tyre tracks left by the tractor. We were on the correct route and made it back to the main road through the lovely village of Pusey. We returned via Charney Bassett and Lyford.

A very nice turn-out of 15 riders for this half day ride with perfect riding conditions!

We decided to split into 2 groups for safety purposes.
Team Eddie. Thanks to Jon T for sweeping for me. Team Jo. Thanks to Jo for leading, to Yvonne for sweeping.

The first half of the ride was very enjoyable & incident free.

As usual Aston Pottery served up excellent drinks & cakes!!

On the second half of the ride Sharron accidentally missed the Great Coxwell turn resulting in her riding the full length of Coles Hill :$ The leader Jo had to chase Sharron down eventually catching her up at the other end of Coles Hill (sweat) Jo's Strava recorded an impressive 37.8mph for that section of the ride!!

It was very nice to see Roger & some of the other riders in my group stretching there legs along Baulking Lane.

What a beautiful evening! We started out with just 4 and thankfully picked up Naomi along Brereton Drive. We made a relatively a quick escape to the country out via the new estate the canal footpath and Stockham to the bridleway at East Challow. Here we took a leisurely ride avoiding the pot holes which had caught Martyn out at the weekend, and were treated to a culinary interlude as we learnt from Martyn how to pickle walnuts!
From here we went on to Childrey and Sparsholt Church our original destination.... we then had a brief discussion as to whether we should extend the ride and visit Westcott and come back into Sparsholt via the spring line...being a daring bunch it was decided that going 'off piste' would be fun and so we did! We said a quick Hi to Lizzie as we passed her reputable cafe, and found the road down to Sparsholt Church was very pleasant and in good condition. We returned as planned through Childrey with a stop for chat by the pond and the obligatory 1* selfie... thanks Martyn!
It was then plain sailing through West Challow Denchworth and home.
A lovely evening with great company.

I think it's about time we went out and conquered Uffington White Horse Hill. It really has to be done at least once in the 2* Tuesday season and I feel the time is right. So - direct routing via Goosey and Baulking to Uffington, through the village and up the big hill - as simple as that! The views from the top are glorious and the remarkable scenery on the way up past Dragon Hill is stunning. So tell yourself that a few minutes effort will be well worthwhile. After the glorious descent, probably the same direct route back.

Around 20 miles. Go on - you know you want to!

This was the BIG ONE for the 2* group. Always hard to know who will be brave enough to give it a go - quite a few, as it turned out! Well done to everyone for taking the challenge. The route out was straightforward and the Hill loomed ever larger as we got closer (I don't think that helps...)

After the warm up climb out of the village (which didn't seem to trouble anyone much), we all set off up the main climb past Dragon Hill. Frankly, everyone smashed it! Great efforts, big smiles at the top and some good photos. Even the car drivers who followed us up got into the spirit of the thing and offered to take a group photo. The descent was fun as always and we set a good pace back across the Vale.

Thanks to all for great company and a great effort.

The second half of the ride brought some lovely quiet lanes to cycle along, Old Shifford & Great Brook. Buckland Hill was our only hill of the day which everyone managed extremely well. (clap) As we arrived at the top of Buckland Hill the sound of a muntjac barking could be heard very close by, very similar to a Fox, which I thought it was, but Barry corrected me on that!

Report:
Just three of us out today, with Barry and James proving to be 'Easy on a Sunday' regulars. Although, after pootling out to Letcombe, an ascent of Gramp's Hill probably does not qualify as easy - but you have to get up to The Ridgeway somehow!

Once at the top, we set a southbound course, undulating our way to Sheepdrove, then turning left. The trails were dry, and thankfully the grass had been cut back so we could see where we were putting our wheels.

At Eastbury, James and I arrived slightly ahead of Barry and swung left and waited for him. We didn't spot him whizz straight by just behind us. After a few minutes without sign, we retraced our route to look for him - but of course, there was nothing to be seen. It was a few minutes before we established contact by text message and realised that if we had stayed in the same place we would have found each other already.

Reunited (and it feels so good) we continued on our way, up and down passing many fields full of wild flowers and humming with the noise of birds and insects. We worked our way across to Whatcombe Farm and enjoyed the descent, where the speed humps are shaped to push you gently in to the air. Then it was north to Fawley, Farnborough and a short stint on the B4494 before a run down Jolly Green Giant and Goddards Brook - and back to Wantage. Glad to say we arrived back with all 3 of us present - and grinning!

Glorious evening!

Only surprise - that not more riders turned up!

A select but very grand little gathering if six of us - consisting of the Hopkins family, plus two "Honorary Hopkins" for the evening.

As it was warm, took it gently fitting the ride billing - naturally. Regular stops for breathers including outside the pub in Denchworth (tempting?). Then Goosey Green to admire the lovely setting of the village.

Next stop - outside the church in Lyford. Seemed to be a few cars moving around - first just thought it was people arriving home etc - but no - it was a treasure hunt! If they were searching for cyclists they found us...

Group photo kindly taken by Jason (to be added!) of the motley crew outside Lyford Church, before we escaped the rush hour traffic, moving round via the Southmoor Road to West Hanney, and back to Grove around 8.30.

Well done to Lewis and Owen for sterling efforts - and no problem with the distance!

Thanks to all for making it so easy.

Something slightly different tonight, heading up to Scutchamer's Knob on the Ridgeway. This round bank now surrounded by trees is the remains of an iron age round barrow that became the shire moot during the Middle Ages. Out via Charlton and route 544 we'll take the Ginge Farm track to the East Hendred road and then turn uphill to climb steadily to the Ridgeway. After some exploration, we'll descend to East Hendred, and then take a metalled path across to West Hendred. Thanks to Lee Ann, I didn't manage to take Paul out from a prat fall :$ Not quiet the welcome he was expecting on his return to evening rides!

Thanks also for everyone waiting for me at the top of the hills - it is a good thing that the perfect weather and views were such a great payback for all the hill effort!

I plan to head to Kingston Bagpuize coffee at Millets.
My thought is to go Denchworth Charney Bassett taking a left turn to Kingston Bagpuize this will cut out Southmoor, the return from Millets is through Fyfield Wick and a left turn to Hanney and home.
Lizzie has ridden this route recently and found a track between the Charney Road and the Hanney Road that goes through Newhouse Farm Buildings it could be a short cut?
I will check this out with Des and Roger as i think they have knowledge of that area.

When planning this route I had hoped Eve would join us and she did, also Barry from the same area, a good distance to travel before starting the ride always nice to see you both.
A quiet ride through the villages apart from a few over head displays from the Red Arrows and other planes practising for the weekend airshow.
After coffee we left Eve and returned to Grove via Hanney.
I hoped i didn't rush too much but I was aware that a couple of people wanted to get back to go on to Bill Flockton Funeral.

Regular Wantage Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL 3*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
9:30 am
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove.

A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, only really designated 3* by the total distance (around 90km / 57 miles).

We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington for lunch at the Butchers Arms pub. Suitably refreshed, we pass the house with a shark in the roof and drop down Headington Hill right into the heart of Oxford for a bit of light tourism / tourist dodging. Then we head north to Wolvercote, round Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor, followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield and Standford in the Vale (with a potential shop stop if, for example, ice creams are called for by then).

Report:
A grand day out with a nice group. We enjoyed being pushed along by the tailwind all the way to Garsington, got the first hill there out of the way and then enjoyed the views from the ridge road along to Wheatley. The big climb up Old Road was undeniably testing, but worth it for the remarkable link through the bridleway at the top provides to Shotover Park. From there it was a quick zoom down into Headington for an excellent lunch stop at the Butchers Arms.

Suitably fortified, we goggled at the great shark and then enjoyed the big descent into Oxford proper. Touristic opportunities followed as we wound through the centre, including photo bombing some wedding photos and getting tangled up in the Little Clarendon Street street fair. We were soon traversing Port Meadow and conquering Cumnor Hill, the final climb of the day. Then it was just a niggling headwind section back - by mutual consent we allowed ourselves a short cut over the footbridge to Southmoor and home via Charney Bassett.

Thanks to all for a grand day out!

***UPPER BRIDGING RIDE***
This is the second of our Bridging Ride series designed to help those who would like to progress to the next level of cycling. As such it will be ridden at the higher end of the pace range.

More or less a repeat of a ride done a few weeks ago (but we might tweak the pace a bit if everyone is up for it). We go along the separated bike track to Wantage, around Charlton and then along the track to Lockinge. We skirt around the south of Ardington, spot the rhinoceros (long story), drop down to Ardington proper and then conquer the small climb up to the main road before the glorious descent past Lains Barn and back into Grove via the newly surfaced bike track past Williams.

Just 10 miles with a couple of very minor climbs,

If you like climbing, this is for you!

Blowingstone Hill is one of our classic climbs and acts as the centrepiece for this ride at the higher end of the range. Often run in a clockwise loop, this ride takes the opposite direction so we'll be going up Blowingstone rather than down it!

A fast trip out through the vale will take us to the first climb to Kingston Lisle from where (after a brief breath) we'll head up the Blowingstone climb.

Once regrouped at the top we'll be rewarded by a lovely descent into Lambourn and a longish climb back over the Ridgeway and back via the Letcombes.

The eleven galant riders who took up the challenge did so magnificently and the drop down towards Lambourn seemed an excellent reward for their effort.

The long climb back up to the top of Hackpen Hill suited some very well and I even managed to carry on a conversation during the slog!

The air was positively cooling by the time we got into the Letcombes and as riders began to peel off homeward I think we all had a pretty good evening's exercise (clap)

Thanks to Jane for sweeping and Eddie for being ready to take up the secondary ride leader's mantle. Luckily a combination of heat and climbing meant that wasn't necessary ;)

Having heard the forecast and had a few riders cry off it was a surprise to welcome 3 families on today's ride! Laura and Steve Legate with their children Matthew, (who Laura informed me snoozed on the journey out), Chloe, Natasha and Rachel, as well as Cath Hopkins with Owen and Lewis who are becoming regular 1* riders. It was also lovely to welcome Jaigar Pagna Disso and her daughters Jessi and Jasielle.

It was great to have so many Thursday morning regulars to support the ride, as with 20 riders in total we were able to split the group into three to include each family with a leader and sweep. We took the regular 1* route out to Denchworth leaving via the estate and Brereton Drive. Regular stops were necessary in the heat today to take on water and ensure that all riders were happy. From Denchworth we headed to Lyford and made a welcome stop under the trees outside the Church for some light snacks (Thanks Des for the sweets !) and a drink. From here we headed to Charney Basset for a stop on the green and the obligatory team photo. Des and Karl took a group who wanted to go a little faster including Natasha, Rachel , Lewis and Owen, whilst the rest of us enjoyed a more sedate ride back via Denchworth to Grove.

Well done to all who braved the elements today a fantastic effort! Special mentions to Chloe who tackled the bridge unaided today both ways, to Jessie and Jasielle for completing their first club ride, and to Des Higgs for completing his 100th ride this season!

2* Saturday Half Day Ride - OXFORD SPECIAL 2*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

This is a very special 2* ride which is different to the Oxford route I have used in recent months but goes back to a route we used a few years ago. We head out via Charney Bassett and cross the A420 on the nifty Southmoor footbridge. Then we follow the quiet road parallel to the A420 all the way to Cumnor and swoop down Cumnor Hill to the edge of Oxford. From there we cut through the Botley estate, find a secret underpass on the A34, take the back tracks to the river and then take the tow path more or less into the centre of town. We then fight through the tourists to my very own St Cross College for a VIP coffee stop. You can only get in if you are a friend of the Bursar, with catering from the fine cafes of St Giles. Talking of tourism, we will have a photo opportunity under the Bridge of Sighs before more fun as we follow the river path to the east, to Kennington and Sunningwell. Finally, we head for home via Tubney and Fyfield.

At just over 40 miles, it is a long ride for an afternoon, but we have a few short cut options in the final section which we can use if necessary. I don't expect to be back before 5.30pm. Having said that, there are very few hills and we will stick to a steady 2* pace.

Distinctly variable weather forecasts through the week, ranging from perfect to apocalyptic. In the end, it was a bit grey and we had a few drizzly moments, but nothing to worry about - just lots of switching between clothing options!

It was a nice evenly matched group and we made good time to Cumnor before the fun really started. All the cunning tracks and short cuts worked well and we arrived at St Cross College a little ahead of schedule (although fortunately not so early that the Bursar risked embarrassment clashing with a graduation ceremony). Lorna S joined us to for coffee, which was a nice bonus. We managed to successfully fight through the tourists to the river, and the towpath was nice and quiet all the way to Iffley Lock before we branched off to Kennington. There was some gentle climbing to Sunningwell and the sometimes busier roads were quiet across to Tubney. One tunnel and some impressive limbo riding later, and we were back on familiar roads heading for home.

Great fun with a great group!

This is the second of our Bridging Ride series designed to help those who would like to progress to the next level of cycling. As such it will be ridden at the lower end of the pace range.

So a meander along the foothills of the Downs: few small hills, but nothing compared to recent weeks. Taking the East Challow route to Letcombe, allows us to test the newly tarmacked Windmill Hill descent and starting the return at Uffington and coming back via Hatford and Charney Bassett.

I'll be stopping at the pub, but there is generally some returning to Grove.

Secondary ride leader will be confirmed later

Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.

Optional sociable stop at The Fox, Denchworth after the ride.

Weather:
heavy rain showerscloudy with heavy rainwindy
Report:
So the wind had blown and the rain fallen most of the day. Much toing and froing between ride leaders and as 2 and 3 stars don't go fast enough to be dangerous on water strewn roads, the decision was to go ahead with the rides. And boy did we think we had made the right decision as the sun shone in the early evening. I even considered whether or not I needed sun cream ;) . With 6 of us, we didn't join forces with the 1&2 star combined rides, instead opting to go ahead with the planned ride.

Bit of a rain shower as we left Grove to head towards Challow, nothing much. The real rain started as we left Letcombe Regis - having come down a partially mended, gravel strewn Windmill Hill. The rain got more and more forceful. Monsoon like. When we got to Childrey, I paused to ensure that no one objected to cutting the ride short and going straight to the pub using the shortest bit of the A417 possible.

We fully expected the 2* ride to be waiting for us but by some miracle they did their full ride with barely a drop of rain :0 . Even the pub were surprised by the number of cyclists who had turned out, probably a good job that not all of us were dripping wet!
