Description:
As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. This is a pre-bookable ride. A trip to Boars Hill. Slightly longer than some half day rides but apart from "The Hill" itself it is pretty flat. Not knowing what the Covid restrictions might be by January I have scheduled a coffee stop in Abingdon market square where there are various options for takeaway.

This is the first scheduled ride of 2022 so hoping you can join.

Report:
Excellent turn out for the first club ride of 2022. Must be those new year resolutions - or else concern about Christmas calories.

The weather was kind - much better that forecast a few days before. Very mild for January and we just made it back before the rain got too heavy.

We all made it up Boars Hill with no bother (in fact several commented it wasn't as bad as they had feared) and enjoyed the views over Oxford - where the sun came out to order for the photos. We then had a glorious sweep down Bayworth Lane before meandering to Abingdon for our coffee stop.

A puncture on the way back due to the debris on the roads - but Richard fixed it amazingly quickly as well as giving us some a tips for future reference, (many thanks Richard).

A great group and a good start to 2022 cycling.
We got to the top!

It was so cold that I was nervous about ice on the roads, but Carin's bravery encouraged me out and we enjoyed a bracing ride, together with the 2* riders, who managed to keep to their promise not to go too fast or leave us behind. Thanks everyone - much appreciated! In fact the only icy patches were in the usual damp spots on the Denchworth Road, and thanks to Des' careful leading we negotiated them successfully. As there were only 2 riders on the 1*, the two rides joined together. (See Lorna's 1* report too.)

As a group of 7 it was to a very good day for a ride as it was only 1 degree C when we set off but we took it very steady as the road from Grove to Denchworth was very icy. Everybody was relaying warnings to each other so no mishaps. It was very cold so we pushed on from Fyfield Wick through to Kingston Bagpuize to Southmoor, rather then crossing the A420 into Fyfield and coming back over the bridge at Southmoor. We were very well looked after at Munch Cafe and we all thawed out.

For the return it had got a bit warmer and most of the ice had melted so we made good time back to Grove. Thank you one and all, a very good competent group to lead. Des

Well you had to be mad to go out on a wet January morning and so no surprise that Steph, David and Karl turned up! We headed out to avoid the headwind going through Denchworth and out via Asti stud and Park Lane to Stanford. We then went on to Hatford taking the path up beside the church to the A 420. A short run into the wind along the A420 we turned into Littleworth and enjoyed the steep decent into the vale. Crossing the Thames by the Swan at Radcot we went on to Blakes for coffee and refreshments; Steph enjoyed the infamous Cinnamon Bun, David a bacon and maple syrup doughnut and Des and Karl very generous bacon butties, apparently there was a shortage of Baps!.
Fully fuelled we headed back the shortest route via Bampton Buckland and Charney Bassett to avoid getting cold.
A great ride in spite of the weather and as always excellent company, Thanks Des!

An unusual exploration for us, on a cold winter night.
We headed out to Ardington. Then North, through Arrington Wick a couple of fields and a farm track with exceptionally large puddles until we reached the railway bridge. Then, as the bridge was full of water, we turned and headed round some squelchy field sides to Steventon.
Up the hill and gradually South to the NCN, taking in some choice singletrack on the way.
We didn't even go up to the Ridgeway!

1* Saturday Half Day Ride 1*
Leader:
Steve Swanton
Start Time:
1:00 pm
Start Location:
OMH
Description:
A slight change of plan and please note the 1pm start. A gentle loop around the vale with on optional refreshment stop at the Vale and Downland Museum in Wantage towards the end of the ride.

Heading out first to Lyford and Charney Bassett, we'll turn south passing close to Denchworth to cross the railway line over the Circourt Road bridge (with a great view of the Downs). We'll have one short section along the A417 before turning right to West Challow and will make use of two tarmacked bridleways, the first climbing gently to Childrey, the longer second with a short potholed section into East Challow. After a short ascent through East Challow, we will be rewarded by the nice long descent into Wantage. After tea, we will take a cunning back route back to Grove. Total distance about 17 miles, but there is a 10-mile option back to Grove from Denchworth for those that would like the opportunity of a shorter ride. Lights recommended in case it is gloomy.

As a courtesy to the ride leader, please pre-book for this ride. Please text the leader, giving your name, no earlier than 9:00am on the Sunday before the ride. You will receive confirmation or be advised if the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained.

Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.

Report:
Eight riders for our first weekend 1* ride of the year - a warm welcome to Jonathan on an otherwise cold, overcast but windless afternoon. We made our way north through Denchworth, stopping for a short break by the church in Lyford (new to some) before continuing on to Charney Bassett and looping back to Denchworth via Goosey lane and Asti equestrian. There were no takers for the short cut home despite the cold, so we all continued on the more undulating part of the ride. Hedge trimming was in progress beyond the Circourt railway bridge but we managed to negotiate the substantial amount of on-road debris without incident. The gentle climb on the bridleway from West Challow to Childrey served to warm us up and then it was across the rather muddy and now deeply potholed track to East Challow. Sarah, Jonathan and Gerry went there own ways in Wantage and the remaining 5 riders continued on to the museum cafe for tea. By the time we left there were signs of blue sky. but no sun appeared and it still felt cold. We followed the back route past Wantage hospital and through the Charlton estate as planned and were back in Grove before 4pm.
An enjoyable ride and good to catch up - thanks everyone for your company and thanks to Nick for sweeping.

We'll head out through Appleton and Cumnor before crossing the A40 and visiting some villages north of there, skirting round the north of Witney before back over the A40 near Curbridge and stopping at Aston Pottery for lunch. We then go through Newbridge cross the A420 and loop through Stanford before back to Grove.
Aston Pottery is hopefully a safe bet for lunch as I'm not sure what, if any, restrictions will be in place by January. I'll obviously update if necessary.

Extra bonus for seeing a hare, a heron, red kites and field fares. Lovely food at Aston as well.

A repeat of a ride we did last summer, this is a real classic on some rarely used little roads down into the Thames Valley. Out via Denchworth and Park Lane to Stanford in the Vale, then to Hatford and a tiny road to the north. Then a quick dash down a short section of the A420 to Littleworth is rewarded by a dramatic drop into the Thames flood plain. Over the river to Clanfield, along to Bampton and a great tea stop at Aston Pottery. Pot buying is optional, but the cafe is great. Suitably fortified, we will take some time to explore the rarely travelled tiny lanes around Shifford and to the Thames at Chimney (tantalisingly close to the other side of Duxford ford), before conquering the modest challenge of Buckland Hill and (after exploring the back streets of Buckland village) heading for home via Charney Bassett.

40 miles and about four hours in total, so note the slightly earlier start time.

A lack of outside seating meant that the additional coffee at Parsons was abandoned.
Average speed 20.3 kph.

Start Location:
OMH
Description:
As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. This is a pre-bookable ride. To book a place, text your name to the ride leader no earlier than 9:00am on the Sunday before the ride. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained.

Please note 9am start which takes pressure off due to shorter days.

A flattish ride out via Lechlade and Coleshill, (where we will stop for lunch). Then gets a bit hillier whilst we climb back out of the Thames Valley and head towards Ashbury. After that back to Grove by a relatively familiar route.

Report:
Warm temperatures (for January), the lack of rain and sunny intervals all bode well for lovely ride conditions. Unfortunately however, the weather threw us a bit of a curve ball - a stiff westerly.

We had a headwind for most of the morning - very strong at times - but we all tackled it with energy and smiles. Roger (with battery assistance) took the front for some of the most exposed bits - which was very welcome, (thanks Roger).

Needless to say we were all ready for lunch by the time we got to Coleshill and the Carpenters' Arms came up trumps with good food and friendly service. We sat outside and the sun even shone for most of the time.

We did get a little chilly towards the end - but we soon warmed up as we climbed up to Shrivenham before heading back along the Vale.

We had mostly done the roads before - but more often in the other direction. We agreed reversing the route made for a nice ride and a welcome change.

As ever a great group and a great day out.

Report:
We were blessed with a beautiful sunny morning and little wind for the ride and it was great to see 11 riders!
With a larger group we split into 2 with Lorna leading the second group of Steve, Jonathon, Sarah and Karen. Our group of Lee Ann, Jon, David, Roger and Tony followed the planned route to Childrey Holloway up Ickleton Road and then enjoyed the rather quieter roads around the villages of Childrey, Westcott and Sparsholt, before joining the springline to Woolstone. We were pleasantly suprised that the road was not too busy and took the ups and downs at our own pace before meeting up at the junction into Woolstone to admire the stunning views of the horse and Vale. With the hills behind us the ride home was a breeze and we flew home via Uffington, Baulking and Goosey.
A lovely morning with great company, it was also good to finish the morning off with a coffee and refreshments at Parsons.

Thank you Lorna for taking on the second group!
