Good weather and not much traffic meant very good cycling conditions and we made good time to the main climb of the day - Ashbury Hill - before a ride against a headwind to Lambourn.
Once through Great Shefford the lanes provided some great views over the countryside. Saddlebacks was quite busy but we all managed to get a drink before the lovely descent down Chain Hill.
Barry S. was unfortunately stung just above his eye, which was painful and has now swelled up very badly (see photo on facebook).
It was good to have David back on a ride, though he has decided hills and just mended broken bones don't always go well together!
Thank you to everyone for being such a good humoured group and a special thank you to Nicole for her sweeping duties.

Oxford Urban Safari 1*
Leader:
John Tranter
Start Time:
2:00 pm
Start Location:
Seacourt Park and Ride, Botley, OX2 0HP
Description:
**UPDATE THURSDAY** The weather for Sunday is looking good! I can confirm that the Seacourt entrance height restriction is 2.2m or 7ft 3inches. I will arrive a little early and wait at the bus turning circle. Anyone with a bike on a roof rack should drive there first to unload and then head into the car park. It would be useful if you could let me know if you are riding so we don't miss anyone.

A very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside and canalside paths and quiet streets to do a 17 mile 'urban safari' around Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is almost entirely traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Major building work in Botley means that the best place to park is the Seacourt Park and Ride (bring 2 pounds in coins). Note there is a height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions. There is also some parking in front of the West Way shops. We use the separated bike track on Botley Road to get to Osney, then up the river, across Port Meadow to the canal, up to Wolvercote and then through the exclusive back streets of leafy Summertown until we get to the Marston Ferry Road. Then there is a fascinating series of hidden tracks and roads through to the Oxford Brookes University campus (including an unexpected manor house), a swoop down to Florence Park and a final section of beautiful riverside towpath. Some of the tracks will be rough in places, so this is not the ride for carbon super bikes. Mountain bikes would actually work as well as hybrids for this.

Really interesting - don't miss it!

17 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph.

Report:
It was a new idea to begin the ride at Seacourt Park and Ride - I wasn't sure if this would help or hinder. Well, we had a great group so I guess it wasn't too bad! Wonderful to see so many people turn out, some had done similar rides before, many hadn't. The ride went very well - I was slightly worried about how such a large group would work on some of the smaller tracks and alleyways, but it all seemed to go fine. We saw lots of sights - the Thames Path, Port Meadow, the Oxford Canal, leafy Summertown, the wonderful Marston Ferry cycle path, the extremely wealthy back side of Headington Hill and, of course, the mysterious surprise of Headington Hill Hall. We also decided on a bonus pitstop on the main campus of Oxford Brookes University - very handy for 'facilities' and ice cream!

The second half was equally pleasant as we swooped down through east Oxford alongside Florence Park and up into Iffley village. The final section was a lovely run along the river towpath past all the College boathouses and along to North Hinksey.

Thanks to all for a most enjoyable afternoon - particularly to Trish on her first ride with the club.

Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

A slightly longer ride tonight, but well worth it. We head north via Denchworth and Charney Bassett, cross the A420 on the wonderful bridleway bridge at Southmoor, then run along to Appleton before cutting back across the A420 at a nifty dual carriageway crossing into Tubney Woods. After a brief section of A338, we cut across through Tubney village to take the secret tunnel entrance to Fyfield. Then home on familiar roads via West Hanney and Denchworth.

23 miles so we should be back by 8.30. There are some short cut options if we need them!

Another Tuesday evening with an apocalyptic weather forecast - torrential rain one hour before the start, but in fact once again we got lucky. A brave group gathered and in the end we had wonderful weather conditions for our long evening ride.

We had talked about short cuts but all was going well and we did the full route. We ended up crossing the dreaded A420 four times, but even that was uneventful.

All round, a great evening ride with great company!

A last minute change of plan (a common theme in my rides!) due to some very heavy rain showers earlier meant that we decided to stay low and ride an alternative route around the vale. As we missed out on the work out of riding up Chain Hill the pace was kept up and we completed our 21 miles in 1 hour 24 minutes at an average speed of 14.9 mph. Not bad with a headwind in the first half of the ride. The sun shone and all in all it was a lovely evening ride.
Welcome to Ben Mitchell, who had his first ride with Wantage CUK and thank you to Jon for sweeping and Chris and Sian for giving me some relief from the afore mentioned headwind!

Here there will be the option to take a break for snack and refreshments at the village cafe, or for those preferring their own snacks rest and refreshments at the foot of the millenium stones. We were blessed this morning with beautiful weather and perfect riding conditions! Judith Hollick, and her children Lizzie, Josh and Ellie joined us for the first time and we had a lovely group of regular riders supporting this ride. Heading out to Wantage along the cycle path it soon became apparent that Josh 11 and Lizzie 13 were able to go at a pace more akin to the regular Thursday rides and so we split the group and 'Rapid' Roger led the faster group with Di as sweep. This left, Steph leading the rest with Des and Karl at the back. Ellie at only 7 years of age and with no gears on her bike, was amazing, especially as she had taken a tumble on her way to the start of the ride. We met at regular intervals, and stopped briefly in Lockinge for drinks and refreshments. We also enjoyed a lovely coffee/ice cream stop at Ardington Tea rooms. After coffee we made our way back along the bridle path, through Charlton Heights and along the cycle path to Old Mill Hall. There were a couple of challenges on the way parked vans in Grove Road obscuring our view from Cane Lane on the way out, and the traffic lights at the bottom of Charlton Heights being out on the way back. I felt at these points that I was missing a Lollipop stick! The group were very sensible and I have to say that car drivers were also particularly accommodating.
A lovely ride with excellent company.

Report:
Glad to say that we found a dry gap in otherwise poor weather. The high winds of Saturday had died down, and there was a gap between the various rains of this summer.

Also good was the eclectic mix of bikes at the start. Tony's MTB and my 29er were pretty conventional, by Roger was on a gravel bike and Brian Hipwell on a steel rigid all bike. Unfortunately, a bit of tyre rub early on caused Brian to retire to adjust his drop-outs.

The three of us continued East out of Wantage and up Goddards Brook and Bitham Woods to the Ridgeway. Getting up was hard, but once on top, the Southwesterly wind blew us along to Harwell, quite easily and we enjoyed the views. We wondered if this was the last time we would see the three remaining cooling towers at Didcot.

Coming down the hill at Harwell, shall way say happened at different speeds, but everyone got down with a smile. Soon we were in the wooded section where the twisting trails once again were a favourite. We wroked our way across to Rowstock, turned back West through more woods and back on the NCN route through Lockinge.

Quirky variation on a theme tonight....

Encountered "1 star regulars" who fancied the challenge of 2 star, then other 1 starrers who were open minded. Upshot was that it was decided that the 1 star "group" would tag along with the 2 star - on their route.

This worked "well" until we left Grove! Some of the "1 stars" got held up behind cars (yes the cars held the RIDERS up!) and we lost the 2 star group who had sailed off in the distance not to be seen again.

Not to be deterred, - it was a glorious evening - we carried on, reaching Baulking. Impromptu decision, due to the time, to "browse" in to the village, before curling back, via Park Lane, Asti Stud and home.

The "spur of the moment" change from the billed route seemed to go down well - especially as it was less hilly!

PLUS - we went FURTHER, so hats off all round!

Thank you all for a lovely relaxed informal ride, and thanks to Steve S for great support.

A repeat of a ride from this weekend 5 years ago which I thought I'd lead to give 1* riders a chance to visit the Saddleback Farm Shop Cafe (owned by the family of one of our members).
This is a slightly hillier than usual 1* ride, but will be taken at a leisurely pace with no rush and plenty of time to take in our wonderful surroundings.
Meet at the village hall car park in Leckhampstead (RG20 8QJ),
opposite the former The Stag PH. The ride will follow a clockwise route visiting the villages of Chaddleworth, Brightwalton, Farnborough and Peasmore with a short detour to see a CTC-winged wheel. A total distance of about 16 miles.

Report:
Including 3 riders who cycled up Chain Hill to the start (Karl, Des & Steve), 14 riders (a record for this ride leader) set off from Leckhampstead Village Hall and headed South to visit a house owned by club members which has an old style CTC "Winged Wheel" sign attached (a similar one can be found in Wantage Market Square).

After the team photo, we retraced our steps and headed towards RAF Welford, passing a few cyclists going the other way as we did so (these turned out to be participants in the MagnifiCat Sportive based at Newbury Racecourse). We then cycled on through Chaddleworth and Brightwalton. Between the two villages we came across some very large puffballs, one of which Martyn picked up for his evening meal.

At Brightwalton, there was an option to cut the ride short and head off to the tea stop but all of the riders wanted to carry on, so we then headed down to Woolley with a magnificent view of Woolley House on the way (the memorial on the road between Wantage and Great Shefford is in memory of a former resident of this house). At this point the route became more undulating and we carried on through the village of Farnborough to our tea stop at Saddleworth Farm.

Suitably refreshed, Des & Karl left the group to head home and the rest of us headed South to Lilley & Peasemore, at which point we came across more of the Sportive riders and the official photographer for the event (a shame he was expecting riders from the other direction!). After Peasemore, the ride was completed by crossing the Wantage/Newbury road again and arriving back at the village hall.

Many thanks to Steve Swanton for the idea for the route and to Ed for sweeping.

Regular Wantage Ride 3*
Leader:

Start Time:

Start Location:
Wantage Market Place
Description:

All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable.

A return to Coombe Gibbet and beyond !!!
We'll head from Wantage up Chain Hill and then descend down the Berkshire Downs to The River Lambourn at Boxford. Then up and over the B4000 and A4 to the flatlands of the River Kennet and the adjacent Kennet and Avon canal.
Then it's up one of Berkshire's favourite climbs - Coombe Gibbet.

After recovering with (hopefully) some excellent views we'll swoop down the other side of the escarpment and on towards The Tea Cosy at Hurstbourne Tarrant.

From there, we'll head back over to Berkshire via Vernham Dene and Hungerford and from there, the familiar haunts of Lambourn and The Letcombes.

A big day out at @ 100km and + 1000m climbing.

A big day out !

Eight riders braved the initial rain to head out of Wantage after John (G) decided to swap his slippers for his riding shoes!

Up over Chain Hill for the days first climb and then down to Boxford and up to the top of Coombe Gibbett for great views over Berkshire Downs and the Ridgeway in the distance.

Sadly Barry couldn't resist the call of the Crown and Garter after three successive blowouts on his front wheel (only one whilst riding)- bad luck Barry !

The seven remaining riders swept down into Hampshire on a glorious descent toward the lunch stop at the Tea Cosy. Cakes before sandwich? Thats how they do it down in Hampshire !

Then the long drag back up to Wayfarers Walk before another swoop down to Ham. A couple more climbs and we were back in the familiar surroundings of Lambourn and the final climb of the day - where I blew up!

All in all a big day our with sunshine, clouds and quite a lot of headwind!
Thanks to all for a really enjoyable ride!!!

Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.

This may well be a first, a Tuesday 2* ascent of Gramps Hill. After seeing it hyped as an iconic climb in the pre-publicity for the Gravel Cat Adventure Event on YouTube, I thought we should check it out... Short and steep, but at max gradient of 1 in 7 it doesn't warrant an arrow on the OS map, unlike the more familiar icons of White Horse Hill and Blowingstone, or even neighbouring Castle Hill on which we will descend (a great straight on-road descent).

To add to the mix, there are several stretches of non-technical bridleway including the metalled track from West Challow to Childrey, a short stretch along the Ridgeway, the NCN544 track to Lockinge and the rougher track from West Lockinge to Ardington.

Gravel bikes not required but low gears or Shanks pony. We'll take our time on the climb and enjoy the views from the top.

All subject to better weather of course and that the off-road sections have dried out.... If not there are more gentle alternatives.

It was a beautiful summers morning for a ride, warm, sunny and with a moderate wind which promised to blow us home! We were delighted to be joined by Jude, Lizzie, Josh and Ellie for their second family ride of the season, especially as they had encountered a puncture before leaving. Well done Josh for saving the day and fixing Ellie's puncture! It looks like we could have a secondary family mechanic in our midst! We also welcomed Joanne, Graham and Thomas for their first ride out as a family, as well as Tim. We took the usual 1* route out towards Denchworth and as we approached the bridge were warned of traffic works. We were delighted as we approached the village to see that they were filling some of the notorious potholes. We had a brief stop having descended the bridge to check all were ok and It was clear that the newcomers were coping well. Our Chairman John was suitably impressed with Ellie's acceleration, and ability to climb the bridge; little did he know that the first ride involved some serious hill training! From Denchworth we headed to Charney Bassett with the group naturally splitting; the first group setting a slightly faster pace, mainly to keep up with Josh! Thomas was quite happy with this, and Lizzie was also perfectly comfortable cruising and talking, in spite of having a sore finger, great job Lizzie. We stopped at the village green in Charney for a quick drink and snack and to catch our breath. It was lovely to see the village pub adorned with beautiful colourful hanging baskets. From here we headed out towards Buckland along a windy road which was also into the wind. Not deterred, all continued comfortably along their way chatting and taking note of the lovely countryside; who spied the kestrel and the red kites? We stopped just short of the crossroads to re-group before turning left towards Hatford and on to Stanford in the Vale cafe for a very well earned coffee/ice cream/cake. It was also a super opportunity to catch up with other riders and to fill our newcomers in on club rides etc. As we left the village we braved the Wantage/ Faringdon road for a short stretch before turning left into Park Lane. This is a busy road which we only touch on for short spells, and the youngsters coped admirably, maintaining their line and pace as cars passed. Well done! As we turned into Park Lane it felt like we were home and dry, Ellie at this point was fuelled by ice cream and led the pack, for much of the return journey via Denchworth. It was disappointing to note that the roadworks hadn't progressed to fix the T junction potholes. In all a lovely morning with great company. Particular thanks to our regular riders Des, Roger, Lizzie, and David Bridge, for their support and to John T for coming out on his day off. Special mention also to John G who made a guest appearance at the cafe.

Description:
Half day ride (45-55km / 30-40 miles), with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new or irregular riders in winter months.

We haven't been to Abingdon or conquered Boars Hill for a while - so this ride puts that right. We take a direct route across to Steventon and through Drayton to Abingdon. We could have an early coffee stop there (venue to be decided) or we could crack on - let's decide on the day. We then head out to the lovely village of Sunningwell and do the one climb of the day up Bayworth Hill to the side of Boars Hill. The reward is some great views down to the dreaming spires of Oxford. The other reward is a stonking descent on the back road off Boars Hill all the way down to Wootton. Then a wiggle over the A420 to Besselsleigh and familiar roads back to Appleton, Hinton Waldrist and Pusey before a final run through Stanford in the Vale (providing an alternative late coffee stop option) and home.

On a very hot Bank Holiday weekend, you never quite know who's going to turn up - in the event it was a great group (although we need to give a special mention to James, who mis-read the start time, was half an hour late and spent most of the route catching us up!)

Going east is sometimes a bit stressful in terms of traffic busy-ness, but thankfully the roads were quiet and we enjoyed the run through Steventon, Drayton and Abingdon without incident. Everyone managed the big climb up Bayworh Hill well and the views down from the top of Boars Hill of the distant dreaming spires of Oxford were well worth it (fun fact - the "dreaming spires" quote is from Matthew Arnold's poem 'Thyrsis' written in 1866 and it is thought it is this exact view he was referring to).

After that we were able to turn away from the slightly nagging headwind and enjoy some wind assistance along the quiet road through Appleton, Hinton Waldrist and Pusey to get to the Stanford coffee shop in good time to enjoy their epic refreshments before they closed.

Thanks to all for your company and for a great ride.

Based on the ride that John Talbot did for many years, this uses what I think was the nicest of the rides he did. Although this is just over a 100km riding with just shy of 1400m of climbing, done at the right pace, this is a very accessible ride that takes in the best of the Isle of Wight. Glorious views, swooping hills and a ferry ride at Cowes (1 pound), what more could you ask for .

IMPORTANT UPDATE 4 AUGUST 2019: We are now putting on 2 groups. Jenny Gower is going to lead the 08:40 group and I will lead the 07:40 group. Please text me if you want to do the early ferry, currently numbers for each ferry are evenly split. If too many want to do one or other of the ferries, I may need to just allocate people. Unless I hear otherwise by the 24 August, the default ferry for those that have told me they are coming and not expressed a preference will be the 08:40. Please DO NOT just turn up for this ride, it is important we know who is going and with which leader, if you have not already let me know you are coming, please do so without delay.

We will catch the 07:40 or 08:40 ferry from Lymington Pier (SO41 5SB). We will travel as day return foot passengers (17pounds for adults and 12.70pounds for 60+, tickets can be bought online in advance or at the ticket office before sailing. Alternatively if there are 10 or more of us we can buy a group ticket at 15pounds per person), bikes are carried free of charge. The crossing takes 40 minutes. There is a pay and display car park at the ferry terminal (8pounds for 2-16hrs). Bring enough change for the machines or alternatively you can use Ringgo to pay for your ticket, see here http://www.wightlink.co.uk/go/isle-of-wight-ferry-routes-destinations/lymington-yarmouth-ferry/.

You must arrive at least 30mins before the ferry to allow time for parking, buying tickets and boarding. Boarding commences 15 minutes before sailing. We will car share as much as possible.

There is limited food on the ferry (tea, coffee, cakes, toast) but there is a cafe at the ferry terminal if you want to arrive early enough to grab some breakfast!

We'll stop at the Old World Tea Rooms in Godshill for a late morning cuppa/comfort break. Lunch stop will be at the Toll Gate Cafe next to the harbour in Bembridge. We'll aim to stop for an afternoon tea/ice cream and comfort break at Cowes dependant on the time. Return ferry will either be the 16:05, 17:05 or 18:05 from Yarmouth.

Report:
This is the ride report for the first group that rode the Isle of Wight on the 31 August. Jenny Gower had kindly offered to lead a second group which meant loads of us could cycle round the island (clap)

Sadly Jerry Bird wasn't well enough to join us, so only 8 of set off from Yarmouth before 8.30am. We'd all forgotten how quickly the hills start - by the time we made the obligatory pause for a view stop and comfort break beyond Freshwater Bay, we had enjoyed some great climbs and descents. The quicker amongst us showed us how the climb past Blackgang Chime should be tackled, their reward was a stunning view.

With the biggest climb out of the way we made Godshill and the same small cafe as last year before 11. We then had a very pleasant time eating cake and chatting. Before we knew it, we had been there for three quarters of an hour! Julie then found a splendid pair of sunglasses in a shop called Xanadu to replace her cycling specs that had inexplicitly broken. She had change out of a fiver :o

Before we knew it we were at the Toll Gate Cafe in Bembridge. The setting of this cafe is second to none and seems to be a magnet for people from Wantage - Joy and Dave both got approached by people who either currently live in Wantage or have retired to the Island from Wantage! As we waited for our food, James asked how far I thought the others were behind us, I looked up and there they were!! With the ferry being a bit late they had skipped the Godshill stop. It was great to catch-up whilst waiting for our food. We must remember next year to get water bottles filled at the same time as ordering food - there was a big pause whilst we waited to get the bottles back.

The wind got up after lunch and was quite testing at times. It couldn't decide if it was going to rain properly or not and it looked quite threatening for a while. We got to Cowes and straight on a ferry, the price of which had gone up by 50% since last year :( We made the decision to just have a comfort break rather than an ice cream stop as well.

Our legs began to feel the rolling nature of the ride and we were glad when there was shelter from the wind. But the wonderful views and quaintness of the villages kept us happy. The weather gradually lightened and the rain threat went, before we knew it we were back at the ferry having forgotten to do the slight detour to the ice cream shop (I know how could we have not gone to the ice cream shop (doh) )

Another splendid day circumnavigating the IoW on its totally splendid roads. A lovely group full of cheer and team work. Fingers crossed we get to do this again next year :)

Group 2:
After a much more leisurely (?) start than group one and on the 8:40 ferry we started cycling aroun 9:30 ish. Discussions within the group led to a decision to miss out the Godshill stop and push on to Bembridge for lunch, and it was good to see the other group before they set off on their post lunch journey.

We weren't quite so fortunate with the timings for the floating bridge in Cowes and just missed one so had quite a wait for it to go and come back, but it wasn't raining so no big deal.

We did stop at the kiosk but instead of ice creams all round there were several takers for hot chocolate which hit the spot and gave that extra energy required for the last stage back to Yarmouth. We arrived having missed the 17:05 ferry and with a time before the next one at 18:05....but that time was usefully spent with the group variously indulging in beer / ice creams / cool drinks.

Lovely day out with a great group of people
