Riders:Bryan CharlestonChris Walters Dean Douglas Des Higgs Lyn Taylor Maurice Bawden Sorrel Williams Riders = 7 Report:First ride of the year, and it was a bracing if sunny affair! Des took 6 of us out towards Denchworth, where we picked Maurice up. Not quite the planned route due to the slushy road conditions up to Charney Bassett. We all did well to survive on some of the slippier sections, but arrived back in Grove intact, everyone scooting off pretty quickly to get back to warming homes.Thanks Des, top ride. | ||

Regular Wantage Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Nick Dunton |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:A figure-of-eight route of around 80-90 km with no major hills. It is January, so I have tried to keep to reasonably clean roads to avoid puncture stops. Three-star ride, so brisk pace. Should be back in Wantage by 3.30 p.m. but bring lights in case of unscheduled stops.Route goes east through Lockinges, Ginges, Hendreds, Featherbed Lane, Steventon, Drayton, Sutton Courtenay, Appleford, Wittenhams. Wallingford [coffee stop, if required], Shillingford, Newington, Stadhampton, Golden Balls [lunch stop at Notcutts Garden Centre], Clifton Hampton, Long Wittenham, Sutton Courtenay, Milton, Steventon, Hanneys, Goosey, Kingston Lisle and back to Wantage along the B4507. |
||
Report:Five riders. Weather was remarkably clement, although road conditions poor, lots of standing water and many new potholes. We decided to omit the lane through the Lockinges and Ginges owing to poor surface conditions. Featherbed Lane was closed owing to an earlier RTA but we got through OK. Rest of the ride was uneventful. We chickened out of the final loop to Kingston Lisle as my cold was getting the better of me. Back in Wantage by 2.15; total distance 82.5 km. Notcutts Garden Centre OK for lunch, if a little expensive. Need to get there early, however; the restaurant was packed when we left. | ||

Saturday afternoon 2* ride from Grove | 2* |
---|
Leader:Glen Savegar |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 45-55km (30 - 40 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, at a riding pace of ~18km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly. Might be a struggle for new riders in winter months.To blow away those January blues/cobwebs our first 2* Saturday ride of 2010 will take a flattish journey to Aston pottery for tea. Intended route will be as follows- Old Mill Hall, West Hanney, Southmoor, Longworth, Hinton Waldrist, Pusey, Buckland, Bampton, Aston Pottery (Tea Stop), Cote, Buckland via Great Brook towpath, Charney Bassett, Lyford, Denchworth, Old Mill Hall. Approx 34 miles total distance. |

Riders:Des HiggsGlen Savegar John Talbot Lyn Taylor Maurice Bawden Peter Busby Richard Divall Steve Boreham Riders = 8 Report:A cold dull afternoon saw 8 of us head out from Old Mill Hall at a steady pace.It is January after all, and we really don't want to be overdoing things this early in the year !Heading down the aptly named "Winter lane" from West Hanney, Lyn suffered a puncture, fixed it, and was then rewarded for his efforts by a valve blow out rendering the new inner tube an "ex inner tube" ? Richard rode with us as far as Buckland and then headed back home. Making good time after our lengthy mechanical delay we arrived at Aston pottery for about 3.30pm, the tea and cakes very much appreciated by all !... A change to the planned return was required due to flooding of the Great Brook towpath. Thanks Maurice for the advance information. I was a little uncertain about the A415 alternative from Standlake to Kingston Bagpuise, but the road was pretty quiet of traffic and completely fine for a brisk(ish) return by way of Charney Bassett and Denchworth. A really enjoyable afternoon. Thanks everyone for your excellent company ! Glen S | ||
