Report:Not a day for the faint-hearted! Hi-viz outerwear, lights and warm layers helped a lot as we set out in the chilly mist, joined by the 2* riders who wisely decided they wouldn't attempt anything more ambitious than our potter up to Southmoor via Charney Bassett and back (through Hanney). Trying to keep warm, we sped round at faster than a usual 1* pace, and were glad of our cosy coffee stop. Des wasn't feeling too good, so Karl kindly cycled back to Grove for his car, returned and took Des and his bike home. Friendship in action! Everyone agreed that we wouldn't have ventured out if there hadn't been a club ride, but we were glad we made the effort. Well done all. | ||

3* Saturday Half Day Ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:Sharon Bedford |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:Beacon Car Park |
Description:As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely. This is a pre-bookable ride.Rescheduled from 5 November. A trip to Hungerford for coffee and cake. Given the time of year we will be taking the hills at a steady pace - so please don't be put off. Should be home by 1.30pm |
||
Report:A cold (and somewhat dreary) start to the day didn't put us off and we set off for Hungerford with great enthusiasm. This was a hilly ride ( somewhere between 880m and 950m of climbing depending which Garmin you believe) and the consensus was that hill climbing in the cold is so much harder than on a warm sunny day. We found a great new(ish) cafe in Hungerford - Tray's Cafe in Barrs Yard (previously the Honesty). We were given a very warm welcome and even had our photos taken by the owner. We promised to spread the word! The headwind on the way back made the cycling harder - thanks go to John for sharing the lead when the going got tough. Great group and lovely route, (one to be repeated on a warmer day I think). | ||

Riders:Barry StantonGerry Jones Jenny Gower John Tranter Karl Blake Lizzie Hardingham Stephanie Haddrell Terry Penn Tina Mould Riders = 9 Report:It was lovely to have a late flurry of riders join the ride to conquer the hill, and especially great to welcome a new rider Tina Mould to the ride, and 4 ladies on a 2*. The weather was disappointing, no sun and a light drizzle as we headed out to Denchworth, and on to Childrey. A little chillier than of late, we kept moving, and were not hindered by much traffic. Karl acted as sweep and it was the girls, Jenny, Lizzie and Tina, along with John who took the front positions. and set the pace. We rode through Westcott to the spring line where we divided into two groups with John leading the first group and Terry the second and providing motivational chat to the group leader! As we arrived at the foot of Dragon Hill there were two schools of thought, some wanting a breather and others just wanting to get it over with! Whatever we all conquered the Hill and were justly rewarded with Mince pies at the top, and greeted by familiar faces, David Jackson who offered more mince pies and Terry Ryland who acted as group photographer. Thanks chaps great to see you! The rest at the top was welcome, although the weather turned cold and that with the descent made the north wind feel very bitter. The call of hot coffee and further refreshments beckoned. As we came into Uffington we had a minor mechanical with Tina having a slow puncture. She blew the tyre up and managed to ride home with a couple more inflations. It was a case of the hare and the tortoise- Tina racing off to get as close to home as possible, being chase by Barry , Karl and Terry, and myself John and Gerry catching up as the next inflation was complete. Lizzie and Jenny just cracking on at a very respectable 2* pace. In all a great ride with the Hill Conquered and teamwork ensuring that we all succeeded. Thanks to all for company and encouragement. Lets hope the 11th is brighter and warmer! | ||

The White Horse Cycle Challenge, 26 Nov - 10 Dec |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Anywhere of your choice |
Description:We challenge individual riders to climb the great Uffington White Horse Hill at a time of their choosing between Saturday 26th November and Saturday 10th December (on their own or in a group), take a selfie or photo at the top for proof, get extra respect for taking their own mince pie up there and raise money for Whizz-Kids. Our target is to see 100 riders complete the challenge and to raise £2,000 for Whizz-Kidz. The fortnight kicks off with a club 2* ride to the Hill on Saturday 26th November. We have set up a donations page here: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/whitehorsecyclechallenge2022 and would welcome donations to support the efforts of all riders, whether from riders themselves, their family or friends. The event is open to all to who enjoy a cycling challenge. To help non‑regular or non-local cyclists give it a go, we have put together a route sheet from Grove and Wantage to White Horse Hill and back. It can be found on the Route Sheets tab of the website - look for Route 8. We ask participants to post their photos on the club Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/cyclingukwantage or to send by email to: info@cyclingukwantage.org.uk This address can also be used for enquiries about the event. |

Mince Pie Rides to White Horse Hill 2022 - CANCELLED |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:11:00 am |
Start Location:NT car park, White Horse Hill |
Description:10/12 Very sadly due to the sub-zero temperatures forecast tomorrow and in the interest of rider safety, the mince pie meet at White Horse Hill has been cancelled. It is still possible to make a donation to Whizz-kidz online (see link below). A big thank you to all those who have donated already. Our annual festive ride, which again is in aid of Whizz-Kidz, the children's mobility charity (see http://www.whizz-kidz.org.uk/). Guests and other cycling clubs are very welcome to join us at White Horse Hill NT car park (grid ref SU 293866) from 11:00 to 12:00 for mince pies and mulled wine. All proceeds on the day will go to Whizz-Kidz. If you would like to cycle with us, guest riders are most welcome. There will be on-road rides at 1*, 2* and 3* grades and an off-road ride to choose from, leaving Wantage Market Place between 9:30 and 10:00. Further details of the rides will appear under the individual ride entries closer to the date. This is a very popular event, so please arrive in good time for registration, at least 10 minutes before your chosen ride. Afterwards the rides will continue for an optional pub lunch at the Fox in Denchworth. Please contact Di Whidborne to book a place (diana.whidborne@cyclingukwantage.org.uk). There will also be a ride directly back to Wantage. Car parking: If driving in to join rides from Wantage, there is free car parking in the Portway car park (by the Beacon, the former Civic hall) on Sundays, OX12 9BU. See http://beaconwantage.co.uk/contact and scroll to bottom of page for map. If you are unable to cycle, we would still love to see you at White Horse Hill. If driving, please use the road directly up to the NT car park from the cross-roads above Woolstone rather than the narrow Dragon Hill road being used by those cycling. This will be our 21st Mince Pie Ride (with cancellations in 2017 due to adverse weather and the pandemic in 2020). It was started by Abingdon Wheelers in 1990 and we took over the event in 2000 when the previous organisers Val and Jim Worsley moved away from the area. From about 40 riders joining us in the car park in 2000 we now regularly host around 150. It was great to be back in 2021! |

We were delighted that John, Carin, Sally, Susan and David decided to join us for a very enjoyable and sociable walk. The back route into Denchworth, entering the village through the churchyard was new to some. The scenery was all rather beautiful with frost on the fields, hedges and trees and ice on the Childrey Brook.Steve and Mandy were already at the table on arrival, Patrick arrived shortly after having cycled, followed by Robin and Kerry. An excellent, convivial meal ensued. Afterwards, the seven of us on foot retraced our steps in the encroaching gloom, arriving back in Grove to streetlights after 4pm and a round trip of about 4 miles. Thanks everyone for your amiable company. Thank you to Di Whidbourne too for organising the lunch. We were sorry that you were unable to make it. And finally thanks to David for the pics. Hopefully, conditions will be kinder for the MPR next year. | ||

Report:A beautiful clear and frosty morning, but positively freezing! Des was full of the joys having got his new bike, and so we sped out to Charney Bassett and onto Munchies at Southmoor; where we were very grateful for the warmth and the coffee. We then took a little detour around the houses in Southmoor to avoid the flooded and frozen road but emerged just at the flood, thankfully the ice had started to thaw and we proceeded with caution and without incident. Homeward bound we enjoyed the views of a Christmas scene across the vale but did not stop to take photos as it was toooooo cold, and we had a christmas dinner booked at Munchies in Grove. We arrived at Munchies to a set table and awaiting drinks and thoroughly enjoyed our festive lunch. Thanks Des for organising! | ||

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:RIDE CANCELLED - No takers for a cold wet night ride so soon after Christmas... I really can't understand why.[Puzzled emoji] - As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres required and good lights when it gets dark (‘get you home’ lights in Spring/Autumn). We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if we decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Out through Fernham and back via Gainfield. Not a frosty forecast so start time 10.00. 39 km. |

Riders:Chris BaileyDavid Jackson Eddie Little John Tranter Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Heavy rain in the morning did not bode well. However, the ride out to Faringdon was dry, with a somewhat inconvenient headwind. Steph suffered a rear wheel puncture, causing our resident mechanic Karl to don his latex gloves......Coffee was taken at Costa in Faringdon, by which time it really had started to rain. Yours truly decided it was not going to stop and paused briefly to reapply the rain jacket that I had earlier removed! A select few enjoyed further drinks at Costa in Grove. | ||
