3* Saturday Half Day Ride - Swindon Special | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Half day ride (60-70km / 38-45 miles), with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph).A Swindon special ride - having careful avoided Swindon for years, I have recently been exploring and have come up with a new route incorporating the Springline Road, Fox Hill, NCN Route 45 from Chiseldon to Coate Water park in Swindon (including the amazing helter-skelter bridge over the M4), followed by a glorious quiet route out of Swindon to the east where we pick up familiar territory back in the Vale and head for Shrivenham and home. There are a variety of possible coffee / ice cream stops so we will decide on the day, depending on weather. 46 miles / 74km with some climbing in the first half, but a really interesting new route. |
||
Riders:Barry StantonDes Higgs Jenny Gower John Tranter Lisa Footner Paul Smith Terry Penn Riders = 7 Weather:Report:This was a new route I was keen to try out and it was great to gather such a good group to experience it with. I modified the outgoing route to avoid Wantage traffic and the often busy spring-line road towards White Horse Hill, so we took familiar roads across the Vale instead and climbed up at Knighton. We then did follow the spring-line road along to Hinton Parva before tackling the big climb of the day up Fox Hill. It was conquered with style and we soon found ourselves enjoying coffee/breakfast/brunch at the Three Trees cafe in Chiseldon - highly recommended with a new cafe extension and excellent service. We then headed along the very good quality NCN Route 45 path down towards Swindon, enjoying the helter-skelter bridge over the M4 and the views of Coate Water. Dragging Terry away from the Richard Jefferies Museum where he does volunteer work, we then enjoyed the delightful traffic free Route 26 out to Liddington and back out to the Vale and familiar roads. The tailwind then blew us home!Thanks to all for your company - definitely one to do again! | ||

We may have the opportunity to fit this route in later in the summer.A visit to the hidden estate of Pusey (14 miles). We'll stop to visit Pusey church before returning on-road via Gainfield, Charney Bassett and Lyford. Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Our leisurely and sociable Tuesday evening 1* rides are designed specifically with adult newcomers to cycling and youngsters in mind, or those who just want some relaxed and sociable exercise. We cover a distance of 10-15 miles (16-24km) at a gentle pace of 8-10 mph (13-16kph), following quiet country lanes and the occasional easy off-road track. We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |

Report:With storms forecast from 11am I made the decision to change the route and do that planned for Tuesday night, which was cancelled due to rain. Barry decided to stay dry and watch the tour, so it was just David and I. We left just before 9 and headed out to Denchworth, and onto Goosey Baulking and Fernham. At this point rain looked imminent and it was black over Faringdon so we decided to head back via Shellingford, Hatford and Charney Bassett. Oxfordshire Century (100-mile) Ride 2023 | 3* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:8:00 am |
Start Location:Clover Place car park, Eynsham |
Description:Update 27/6 - the route and refreshment stops have now been finalised.The classic annual Century ride organised by Cycling UK Oxfordshire. Challenge yourself to cover 100 miles, but enjoy company and the support of the group on the way. This year's century will start at 8am from the Clover Place car park in Eynsham (Grid Ref SP432094). The route will be the same as that used in 2018 (as per link below). We will head northwards across the ironstone country of North Oxfordshire climbing steadily to the top of the Cotswold escarpment, stopping for coffee at Wyatt's Farm Team Room, Great Rollright (24.5 miles). After the break, the route drops into Warwickshire, heading north along the foot of Edgehill before turning north-westwards and continuing into the Avon valley. Lunch can be taken at the Touchdown cafe at Wellesbourne airfield (50 miles). After some very pleasant rolling countryside in the afternoon, the route climbs back into the Cotswolds, the easy way, through the Evenlode Gap, with a pop-up refreshment stop in Kingham (77.5 miles). The final quarter is predominantly downhill, interrupted by a short haul out of the Evenlode valley before a drop to the Windrush at Swinbrook. The route returns to Eynsham through Minster Lovell, Cogges and South Leigh, hopefully with a tailwind . Total distance just over 100 miles. Estimated finish ~7:15 to 7:30pm This will be a led ride at a steady pace of 12-14 mph. Due to the popularity of this ride, please register with Robin. We may split into 2 or 3 groups depending on numbers. Also, please let Robin know if you have any particular allergies or dietary requirements to help with cake selection. |
||
Report:We always think of our Annual Century ride as four 25 mile rides, interspersed with food and drink. It's a good way to help us get round, and this time each of the four had a distinct character.17 riders gathered under a somewhat mischievous 8am sky in Eynsham for the start. We divided into 8 riders, mostly from the Oxford group, and 9 riders, mostly not, to make the ride easier to manage. John Skevington, with Martin and Pauline Casey (on tandem) led off the first group, and I led off the second group a few minutes later. The start involved crossing the A40 before gaining the quiet of Cuckoo Lane. From there, the route was mostly quiet of traffic - possibly the best of our three regular Century routes, or possibly this was because all the keen drivers were distracted by the Silverstone Grand Prix. My thoughts about the sky were proven after a few miles when a shower began. A few jackets were already on, and a few were added. Then it stopped and some jackets came off again. About halfway through this stage we caught up with the first group "We're taking our clothes off!" shouted John - how long they took over this I'm not sure, but we arrived at the first stop before them. This first stage was the hilliest and rainiest, and tea and cake at Wyatts at Great Rollright was a great relief, particularly with the sun emerging. The second stage was flatter and we gained a tail wind. The countryside was pleasant and everything just breezed along as we chatted and pedalled our way to Wellesbourne Airfield, near Stratford-on-Avon for lunch. Lunch there is fairly basic, but reliable and as substantial as you want it. We had two riders who had not made a Century before - Lisa and Nigel. Lisa had ridden 93 miles, and was in good form, she didn't forsee any problem. Nigel had ridden up to 100k before, so wasn't so sure and had his wife on standby. But at the midway point, he understood that the 3rd checkpoint was just another 25 miles - he could do that. And then the 4th would only be another 25... He was, unfortunately a little bit cheated. The third stop was 28 miles further, it was hilly again, and there was a headwind. The scenery continued to deliver, and the roads remained quiet - but it was distinct that the peloton was also more quiet. We rolled on, sometimes a split emerging, and rejoining, but generally doing the business of covering the miles. At last we arrived at Kingham and the delightful sight of Steve and Lorna Swanton waving to us from the green, where they had arranged a picnic for us. The joy of a stop with no queues, or waiting for orders to be delivered - we just dived in to the supplies of cake, crisps and squash that they had brought! We topped up our bottles, took a photo, but still the second group had not arrived - a little concerning? I was glad to find out later that they arrived about 5 minutes after our first group departed. The final leg was again a bit easier. We had turned out of the wind, got into flatter terrain (with the exception of hills before and after Swinbrook) and we could smell the end of the ride. The final section from South Leigh to Eynsham saw a noticeable picking up of pace on a smoother road with a tail wind. And then we were there! Back in the car park where we had started 10.5 hours before. 9 of us in the first group, and 30 minutes later, another 7, followed shortly by one who had preferred to go at a solo pace. All 17 were very happy with the day, and I think possibly none more so than Nigel who had achieved something that he didn't expect to! | ||

Report:With rain forecast and rattling around the vale it was touch and go as to whether we would go ahead, however with 6 booked on and British weather as it is I decided to go ahead with the option of shortening the planned route. In the absence of other rides Claire Hazel and James Bosely were excited to join us.The very hardy group were 'keen' to go out in spite of the light rain and took the optimistic view that 'at least it was not cold', 'there wasn't too much wind', and once you're wet you cant get wetter'! We headed out of Grove in the rain around the estate towards the aeroplane discussing the joys of being out. We stopped to gather the group, and join the cycle path when Roger reported that James unfortunately had a puncture. Claire made the call for us to crack on as it was raining and went back to support James. Such a shame as both were really up for the ride. So we continued out to the Letcombes and paused at the top of Holborn Hill to discuss Hackpen ot not? The weather was looking clearer ahead and so we went for it, so lucky that light rain was keeping us cool. Once at the top we headed down to Westcott. As we stopped at the spring line, realising that it is indeed possible to get wetter and as the skies darkened we decided to head back via Childrey and Goosey chasing the rain. Thank fully we got back to old Mill Hall having dried out ahead of the downpour. Unfortunately David and I having stopped to chat got caught in it as we headed home and arrive thoroughly soaked! All good fun and thanks to all for your sense of adventure and great company! | ||

Report:A while since one of these rides due to various holidays, weather, etc. so it was good to get back on the Ridgeway and make sure it was still there.And a really nice evening to do it on, great temperature about 20C, and not too windy. The main threat was nettles and for the first 3/4 of the ride I managed to navigate around them quite well! We went up Lark Hill and Bitham Woods (which does need a bit of secateur work) then over the back down Ice Valley and up the other side to Bluebell Woods. A bit further south, turnd left down a great track that I don't think we have a name for, but from the OS Map starts in a wood called 'High Robins' which sounds good to me. It's actually more likely the start of Woolver's Road. Then leading on to 'Twisty Knarly' well known by all on two knobbly tyres. We climbed back to the Ridgeway, and headed back west, deciding as a group to go down at Ginge. This was where democracy let us down (although I'd have gone the same way) - the side routes led into brambles, and the main trail led into a lot of cow parsley which required a careful balance of speed to get through without stalling or having handlebars grabbed. Still, we made it, and then foolishly suffered a side order of prickles on the way to the Ginge bridge before picking up the Icknield Greenway back to Wantage. Don't get the wrong impression - this was excellent fun! | ||

Riders:Andy BelcherDiana Whidborne Geoff Neill John Stamp Lorna Swanton Patrick O'Leary Steve Swanton Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Perfect weather for a cycle ride - sunny but not hot, with a gentle breeze. The route was fairly hilly for a 1* ride but we took it gently, pausing to regroup, to make sure everyone was ready to get into low gear for the 'Bridge of Doom' and the steep incline at Betterton, and just to catch our breath or admire the beautiful view. A few pauses also to negotiate passing walkers, runners, dogs, small children or other cyclists on the tracks. We all enjoyed the run down into Ardington and our stop at the Grocer Chef. John left us to cycle on to Didcot; the rest of the group returned to Grove via Lains Barn, the cycle path on Kingside, North Drive and the busy end-of-term car park at Old Mill Hall. A very enjoyable morning; thanks everyone, for your company. | ||

Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Sociable ride of 24-40 km (15-25 miles) at a pace of 18-20km/h (11-13 mph).Out via Denchworth and Hanney, across Cow Common to Steventon, up the hill and over Featherbed Lane to East Hendred. Then good tracks and lanes to Ardington for coffee at the Grocer's Chef. Back via Charlton. 20 miles / 32km |
||
Report:A perfect sunny day and a light breeze - perfect cycling weather. A good group made easy work of the route, helped by generally polite and careful motorists. Featherbed Lane was closed as part of the build-up to the Truck Festival, but a marshall let us through and as a result it was much less of a rat-run than normal.A very pleasant cafe stop at the Grover's Chef as always and a chance to chat to the 1* gang. Then home via the Kingsgrove development, Charlton and the A338 path. Thanks to all for your company. | ||

Club 30th Anniversary Off- Road Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:1:00 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Cycling UK Wantage marks its 30th Anniversary with a special day of rides, at various levels, all culminating in a celebratory tea and cake stop at Uffington village hall. Both current and past members (and friends) of the club are very welcome to join us. If you are planning to come to the tea, please can we ask you to complete a quick registration here: registration link, so that we have a reasonable feel for the numbers for catering at Uffington.This will be the off-road (2*) ride along the Ridgeway before joining other club members and friends for the Anniversary Tea at Uffington at 3pm. We'll head up to the Ridgeway at Letcombe, and then along to the famous White Horse. From there we'll choose a downhill and ride into Uffington village for the 30th Anniversary celebrations. About 12 miles to Uffington. Knobbly tyres required, but a gravel bike should be ok. Please also pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. The ride will run as long as we have more than a couple of people (and the weather is ok). |
||
Report:Our ride to the 30th Anniversary celebrations would of course take us past the White Horse at Uffington Hill, and we'd get there by The Ridgeway, but which way to climb?Lark Hill would send us the wrong way, and Gramps Hill always feels unnecessarily hard, so I picked Segsbury Hill from Letcombe Bassett as it is inevitably hard, but at least quiet and steady. Four of us rode out from Wantage Market place, and up the hill - being lightly spritzed by mild rain. After the big climb, the undulations of the Ridgeway seemed mild by comparison, and the air was clear so we got great views of the vale. Some of the tracks were a little slippy, but every one stayed rubber side down. A final climb up to Uffington Hill Fort (it wasn't actually a fort, more an encampment), then across the Bridleway to Dragon Hill and down the road descent to Uffington. The brake discs were certainly hot by the bottom of this! We pulled into the village hall at about 20 to 3 for tea, cake and celebrations! After the celebrations, we took a mostly road road home, via Kingston Lisle and Sparsholt, but took the Bridleway from Childrey to Challow. 12.5 miles out, 7.5 miles back and 3 seasons worth of weather. | ||

Report:Well, what a fine occasion to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of our wonderful club! And made very special for our chairman John by the surprise presentation of a plaque and card in recognition of his long and continuing service to the club as chairman for 14 years and membership secretary for 16.The beautiful plaque, crafted by our own Jon Townsin, was made from black walnut inlaid with a sycamore rendition of the Uffington White Horse, an emblem of our club. (A short video on the making of the plaque can be found on Jon’s Facebook page.) The card in the form of a hand-painted map of old West Berkshire, was lovingly drawn, by artist and calligrapher Jane John, another long-standing club member, and was signed by everyone present (and some that couldn’t make it). About 45 club members gathered in the hall after the afternoon’s 4 rides to a wonderful spread of cakes, savouries and fruit provided for us by Chris and Des Higgs. They were ably assisted by Vin and Holly, who kept us well-supplied with tea, coffee and squash. Steve S had prepared a display of club publicity materials and press cuttings going back to the early years of the club, including a collection of photographs taken on rides and events over the years. Interesting to see some much younger faces and remember some of those riders who are no longer with us. Towards the end of the tea, John stood up to say some words to mark the occasion and to thank those who had helped to make the day to run so smoothly. Steve S, a founder member of the club, then filled in some club history – starting from monthly 40-mile rides from Wantage Market Place, the ‘innovation’ of half-day Saturday rides and later of Tuesday Evening rides, designed to make group cycling accessible to all. From the very start the club has had an ethos of welcoming those new to cycling and widening cycling horizons for all. And as John noted, we had realised during the pandemic how important the social side and sense of community was to many of our members. May this long continue. Steve then handed over to Nicole to make the presentation. She honoured John with a brief citation of his involvement with the club, to thank him for all he has done and will continue to do for us, and to present the plaque and card. Delightfully, this was all a genuine surprise. John was visibly moved and said a few words of thanks before posing for a few photographs with his gifts. A moment to treasure and we were all so pleased that we had managed to keep the secret from both John and Carin. It was then time to clear up and make our happy ways home, with the various groups intermingling for the ride back to Grove and Wantage. Thanks to everyone who came along to make this such a special occasion. A big thank you to Chris and Des for the excellent spread and to Steve B for helping at the hall all afternoon. Thank you too to Nicole and Jo for conceiving and co-ordinating the gifts for John, Jon and Jane for their wonderful craftsmanship and to everyone for keeping the secret. May the club and its members enjoy many more years of happy and safe cycling. Here we list those who helped out at the hall and /or made their own way there for the tea. | ||

Club 30th Anniversary: A Ride of 4 White Horses | 3* |

Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:8:30 am |
Start Location:Uffington: Thomas Hughes Memorial Hall |
Description:Cycling UK Wantage marks its 30th Anniversary with a special day of rides, at various levels, all culminating in a celebratory tea and cake stop at Uffington village hall. Both current and past members (and friends) of the club are very welcome to join us.PLEASE NOTE: THE RIDE IS STARTING AT 8.30AM FROM UFFINGTON Please let the ride leader know in advance you wish to join the ride. If you are planning to come to the tea, please can we ask you to complete a quick registration here: registration link, so that we have a reasonable feel for the numbers for catering at Uffington. We start from Uffington and travel through Highworth before a first stop for late breakfast at Cricklade (21.9 miles). We then go through Wootton Bassett before our first sight of a white horse at Broad Town (35 miles). We will then climb up to Hackpen White Horse at 38 miles. Then it's onto Marlborough White Horse which is a small and hard to see one, but we'll make the effort. This will be followed by a cafe stop at Elianes (44 miles). It's then into Lambourn and the gradual climb to Ashbury before the final White Horse - our own near Uffington. Then onto the 30th Anniversary Tea at Uffington memorial hall. This runs from 3-5 and we would hope to be there as soon after 3pm as possible. 68.8 miles (110 km) and 3728 feet (1136m) of climbing. |
||
Report:The aim of the ride was to visit 4 white horses as a way of celebrating 30 years of CUK Wantage. The route was great (thank you Jon Townsin) and we saw the White Horse at Broad Town before ascending the Hackpen one. Then onto Marlborough (the white horse was too hidden to be seen) then returning home via Lambourn and Ashbury. Kudos to Richard for climbing up the Uffington White Horse as well - the rest of us were too tired. We even managed to get back to Uffington for 3pm.It was a hilly route made more difficult by a tough headwind at times - thank you very much to Richard for taking the headwind for me. We also experienced lots of weather - wind, rain, sun, cloud - but luckily it was warm throughout. A new cafe stop at Cricklade is highly recommended - The Cricklade club were efficient and welcoming and the food was great. Thank you to everyone for being a great group to cycle with. | ||

Description:Cycling UK Wantage marks its 30th Anniversary with a special day of rides, at various levels, all culminating in a celebratory tea and cake stop at Uffington village hall. If you are planning to come, please can we ask you to complete a quick registration here: registration link, so that we have a reasonable feel for the numbers on the ride and for catering at Uffington.This will be the 2* ride, cycling around the Vale before joining other club members and friends for the Anniversary Tea at Uffington at 3pm. Our route will take us along the spring line - passing through those villages below the Ridgeway where water seeps out from the chalk rock to form our local streams that feed into the River Ock. The good news is that we follow the base of the ridge and carefully avoid going up it! We will go out on the track from East Challow to Childrey, along to Sparsholt and Westcot, then past the base of White Horse Hill to Ashbury and on to Bishopstone. This marks the western end of the Vale and the watershed between the rivers Ock and Cole. We will drop down to the picturesque village of Bourton and continue to Shrivenham. From there we head back through the Vale to Uffington, arriving at the Village Hall at 3pm just in time for the special tea and cake stop. After the celebrations, we will take the direct route back to Grove via Baulking, Goosey and Denchworth. About 31 miles in total, at a gentle speed of around 12mph. |

Riders:Andrew RimmerBarry Stanton Brian Hipwell Chris Bailey David Jackson Jane John Jenny Gower John Tranter Joy Arthur LeeAnn Norris Mike Bailey Nick Dunton Nicole Pethybridge Roger Postbeschild Roger Turnbull Steve Swanton Susie Turnbull Terry Penn Terry Ryland Riders = 19 Weather:Report:After a beautiful sunny morning, ominous clouds rolled in around 12 bringing a heavy shower. It was still raining lightly as I rode into the car park by OMH but the rain then petered out and the sun appeared briefly as we gathered for the start of our 30th Anniversary 2* ride. So it was cagoules off for the photo call. A great turn-out of 16 riders at the start with 3 to pick up along the way, meant that we split into 3 groups, Roger taking the first as a faster group, me in the middle and John the 3rd. After the recent rains, a slight change of route was made, avoiding any mud on the track from Challow to Childrey by taking the road option via the B-road instead (with a bonus ascent and descent 😉). As showers came and passed over the first few miles, we made several stops to don and then remove rainwear, before eventually we emerged into warming sunshine, blue skies and what became a lovely summer’s afternoon.The spring-line road is always fun to ride with its twists and turns, ups-and-downs and panoramic views: across the Vale, up to the Downs and of course to White Horse Hill. We stopped briefly below the Manger to take in the White Horse, an emblem of our club. Battling a headwind, we were behind schedule by the time we reached Ashbury. A quick consultation confirmed that all were up for completing the full route. Upping the pace, we were soon at Bishopstone and turning downhill into the vale, through pretty Bourton and then right into Shrivenham. As last we had the wind behind us! We made good speed along the B-road to Longcot, and then on to Uffington, catching up with some of the 1*group as we approached the hall, just before 3pm, bang on time. Roger’s group were already tucking into the wonderful spread that awaited us and John’s soon followed (all 3 groups having completed the full route). We were soon tucking in and catching up with other riders. Thanks to Roger and John for leading the other two groups and thanks to all for your company on a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon to celebrate our 30th Anniversary. | ||

5th Saturday Oxford Special | 3* |

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove. A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, only really designated 3* by the total distance (around 85km / 54 miles). We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington to view the house with a shark in the roof and a drop down Headington Hill right into the heart of Oxford for a bit of light tourism / tourist dodging (some Bursar's secrets will be revealed). Then we head north to Wolvercote for lunch at the Plough. A circuit of Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor is followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield. |
||
Report:We had a whole range of conflicting weather forecasts in the build up to this one, and I fear this plus the start of school holidays restricted the numbers somewhat. But - we had a quality group and it was particularly good to welcome Shaun on his longest ever bike ride.All went well, traffic was quiet and the strong tailwind got us to Oxford ahead of schedule, despite Barry suffering a puncture on the rough track across the top of Shotover. Lots of tourists and graduation parties in the centre of Oxford but we managed to struggle through and then enjoyed the improved canal towpath up to Wolvercote and an excellent lunch at The Plough. Once we had conquered Cumnor Hill, we discovered a solid headwind for the 15 miles or so home, but we managed it well between us. Thanks to all for a great day out! | ||
