A few glimpses of the Sun but a bright evening even without.We did have the headwind leg outwards to Denchworth and the seldom cycled Circourt Road and onwards to Childrey. Plenty of shelter from there to the drop to Uffington though. We did the full climb from Uffington using Broad Way and we all climbed Dragon Hill splendidly. After a group photo we dropped down to Woolstone and back to Uffington. We had a lovely tailwind all the way back via Baulking, Goosey, Charney Bassett and Lyford. And a final dash to Grove via Denchworth. All in all a splendid evening's riding | ||

Top lead out man in Frank and we were lucky to have David looking after things at the back, thanks gents.It was so windy at the start I was surprised and pleased to see a respectable 7 heading out into the winds through Goosey ,we quickened up a bit to Shrivenham aided by a young Zappi rider who stayed with us for the duration which was handy, well someone had to give Frank a hand! We all nipped up Ashbury and bombed on to Lambourne to regroup. Every man for himself from Lambourne to the bottom of Hackpen and home. Easy, thanks everyone. 35.5m av 17.5 ish | ||

Description:Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres and good lights required. We are keen to welcome new riders and have spare lights available to borrow if you let me know.Dark, cold and wet - we'll ride in any 2. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if I decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |

Report:Short and sweet, but punctuated by punctures.A nice evening, soon after rain, but apart from puddles the trails were fine. We went out via the usual Crab Hill route and our first puncture was mine - at Lockinge. Quickly fixed, weclimbed the Ridgeway at Betterton for a change. On the way up David Y's back tyre started spurting green goo. A flint had cut a 5mm hole in his tubeless tyre and the sealant couldn't live up to its name. He had a fix kit, but had had problems before, so Allen gave him a tutorial. David had the chance to put these skills into immediate practice when he had a similar hole (back tyre this time) on the way down the other side. The process is slightly complex, but you don't need to remove the wheel so it probably takes about the same time as replacing a tube. From then, the ride was incident free, but fun-pack. We zipped down the back of Betterton and hauled up Ice Valley. Then up past Baron Wantage for a quick run down Jolly Green Giant and then Goddards Brook, Crab Hill and home. | ||

Description:Monthly 60-70km (38-45 miles) afternoon ride, with a tea stop, riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). Likely to visit distant destinations. Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing likely.An old favourite. Heading north for an arc round Witney and dipping our cleats into the Windrush and Evenlode valleys. A mix of small country lanes and some larger roads where we can stretch our legs. A few hills as we flirt with the fringes of the Cotswolds – plus the climb from Tadpole Bridge to Buckland – but nothing serious. Small section of bridle path. Tea stop at Aston Pottery. 78.4km. A great group of riders, which made the leader’s job easy. Nice to see James out on his first ride with the group, ably marshalled by his big sister, Laura. And several less familiar faces were there too: come back soon guys. My computer said average speed 22.8 kph – respectable given the terrain and wind-speed. Oxford Special | 3* |

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:PLEASE NOTE: to try to assess catering, could anyone planning to join this ride contact me to confirm? I don't need a 100% commitment, just wanting to get a feel for it.NB: start at Old Mill Hall, Grove. A re-run of a classic all day Oxford ride, this is a fairly gentle ride, only really designated 3* by the total distance (around 90km / 57 miles). We will go out via Hanney, Steventon & Sutton Courtenay to Long Wittenham, then cross the Thames at Clifton Hampden and go through the Baldons to Garsington and Wheatley. Then a super cunning cut through to Shotover and Headington, past the house with a shark in the roof, down Headington Hill, right into the heart of Oxford for lunch at the Mitre on The High - which happens to be managed by our own Andy Cowan who has a few treats in store! Then we head north to Wolvercote and round Port Meadow to Botley and Cumnor, followed by a gentle run home via Fyfield and Charney Bassett. Easy riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). |

Riders:Andy PixtonJohn Groves John Tranter Joy Arthur Katherine Boyce Mila Yearley Peter Brodie Richard Saunders Roger Postbeschild Riders = 9 Weather:Report:A perfect early summer day, a little bit of cooling breeze and a great group. What more could you ask for? It was great to see John and Peter on their first rides with the club this year and also Joy on her first 3* ride.The ride went according to plan, although the climb up Old Road in Wheatley was harder than I remembered from last time. The rough stuff link to Shotover was worth it for the views and the swooping descent into Headington. The shark was as wacky as ever! Lunch was... amazing! Andy Cowan and the team at the Mitre on the High did us proud - a private room, VIP bike storage and mountains of delicious food. Thanks, Andy! The return leg was good, Cumnor Hill was conquered well and there was the added bonus of a village fete underway in Hinton Waldrist. All in all, a wonderful day's cycling. Thanks for your company, everyone! | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.This ride will be at the HIGH end of the grade but still within it. A change of scenery this week, as we head into the west end of the Vale of White Horse. Out through Goosey to Uffington, across to Fernham and back via Shellingford and Charney Bassett. All flat, but a little more distance - 21 miles. We will also aim to take the average speed up just a little. |

Description:Weekly 1.5 - 2 hours at a riding pace of 20-24km/h (13-15mph). May be hilly.This ride will be at the HIGH end of the grade but still within it. Probable change of plan. As John might not be able to get there in time Nick has agreed to be leader if he doesn't. His route will most likely go up Blowingstone Hill at some point... |
||
Riders:Allen StaceyAndy Pixton Antony Cockerill Karen Froud Katherine Boyce Mike Cooke Nick Dunton Phil Stubbings Riders = 8 Weather:Report:A last-minute change of leader as John Talbot was delayed. Hence we took a different route to the one advertised: out through Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking to Uffington, over Blowingstone and back via Hackpen, the Letcombes, and Wantage. A well-matched group meant we made steady progress, with the obligatory breathers at the top of the hills. My Strava says an average speed of 23.8 kph. On the other hand, it says my maximum speed was 138.2 kph! Well, it did say this should be at the high end of 3* pace. We were plagued by the wind, yet again, this time a nor-easterly which made ascending Hackpen from Lambourne a trial of strength and the following descent a little wobbly. | ||

It was hard to get in a rhythm with a lumpy start and strong winds back so digging deep was the order of the day.We seem to have adopted a young Zappi guy who joined us at Sparshot who with Windmill Schroer (Handy thing to have in the wind)did some good work up front although everyone did a decent turn. The turn of the day though was Nick who brought us all back together into the wind,up the hill out of Lambourn, special thanks from me ,Jarv and Jason ! It's a steep but relatively short hill with great views from the top. We'll then enjoy the descent into Childrey and return to Grove via West Challow (with a short stretch along the A417) and Denchworth. |

Report:A small but select group set off from OMH through Grove and out to the Letcombes via a traffic free route, ready to tackle Holborn Hill. All managed it perfectly and, after admiring the view, set off again to enjoy the decent into Childrey. After saying goodbye to Barbara, we took another bridleway to West Challow, then faced the wind back to Denchworth and Grove.A lovely evening and thanks to everyone for making my first ride leading experience such a pleasure. | ||

Report:Tonight's ride welcomed Phil and Jonty of their first CTC Tuesday Evening Off Road Ride, both of whom were adventurous enough to ride on cyclocross bikes.We rode from OMH out to Wantage, via Crab Hill and then up Lark Hill and onwards through the Bitham Wood to The Ridgeway. From there the route took us eastwards and then down the Ginge singe track, before climbing back up to The Ridgeway again via the S bends. We then headed westwards along The Ridgeway as far as the A338, and took a loop that saw us cross back over the Chain Hill road, before dropping down into Lockinge via Goddard's Brook, and back to Grove via Crab Hill. | ||

Newbury Mini Series - Le Mini | 2* |
---|
Leader:Ursula Hallam |
Start Time:11:00 am |
Start Location:Newbury - Greenham Business Park |
Description:This months Newbury meander takes us in a South Easterly direction mostly still within the North Wessex Downs AONB.***Please Note*** As with all the best rides, there is an offroad section - roughly 2km along the Harrow Way. Starting at Greenham Common Business Park (directions below), we will head out over White Hill and along sections of The Harrow Way to the delightful village of Oakley and Jolly Ollys coffee shop. We can eat in, or take out and sit by the village duck pond if the weather is nice. Returning via Hannington, Kingsclere and the streets of Ecchinswell. 60km with a couple of hills - nothing outrageous though. If anyone fancies a pre-ride run - i.e. the 9am parkrun round Greenham Common - and/or pre-ride breakfast, let me know the week before and we'll see if we can get a group together. Meet at Greenham Business Park (free parking) Driving from the A34, exit on the A339 to Newbury and Follow this route. For satnavs use RG19 6HX. Note that the first entrance to the Business Park is usually closed at the weekend so you will need to use the main entrance from the second roundabout. Cycling from Newbury Town Centre, Follow this route taking the subway under the Burger King roundabout if you prefer and the cycle path over Greenham Common - graveled but suitable for road bikes. |
||
Riders:Andy PixtonDavid Smith Jon Townsin Karen Townsin Katherine Boyce Mavis Rose Ursula Hallam Riders = 7 Weather:Report:Cloudier weekend weather with six riders and a tardily late ride leader saw us setting off at about 11:15, chilled-out 2* style-ee. Heading out through the back streets of Ecchinswell, everyone warmed up a little for the steepest climb of the day at White Hill to the delightful views over Watership Down and beyond. A flatter section quickly saw us at the start of the old Harrow Way off-road morsel which was slightly damper than last time I rode but proved very tranquil and no obstacle to seasoned riders. Continuing through Overton and the quiet green lanes of Hampshire we arrived at the Oakley duck pond and Jolly Ollys ready for double-helpings of cake and tea. Thoroughly refreshed, we then took the gentle climbing direct route to Hannington, its lovely village green and a show of sunshine, before the super descent to the back-side of the White Hill climb and a second viewing of Watership Down. All that left us was the homebound section to Greenham, past the elephant on the roof. Declared hillier than the average 2* – fair do’s – but nothing unmanageable and hey, hills are there to be climbed! Merci beaucoup to everyone for turning out and making it a lovely ride! | ||

Saturday morning off-road ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:Crowmarsh Gifford Primary School. OX10 8EN |
Description:Our monthly off-road ride for those who like their rides bumpy and (sometimes) muddy. Held on the second Saturday of each month, we start from various locations to take in some of the best tracks in the south of the County.This one is based on the classic 'Judge's Ride' and includes the twisty Grim's Ditch singletrack and climbing and descending through Mongewell woods. The ride will be about 20 miles, mostly off-road. The terrain will be rough, so a mountain-bike in good condition and with knobbly tyres is recommended. We aim to finish in time for a late lunch (whether together or heading for home). |
||
Report:Only two of us today, possibly because of the drizzle. This kept going on-and-off through the ride, but never really made us properly wet. We were in the woods a lot of the time and that helped.All-in-all a very nice run with a few good ups and downs. Nick did slide off on one wet chalky bit, but at slow speed into some very soft bushes, so no damage done! | ||

Description:Weekly 1.5 hour rides at a riding pace of 18-20km/h (11-13mph). Not likely to be very hilly.This ride will be at the LOW end of the grade but still within it. This week's ride was planned to be a flat loop out to and back from Uffington. By an amazing coincidence, it turned out to be identical to last week's ride, though intended to be ridden at a slower pace. After discussion it was decided to just ride the route in the reverse direction. So, the plan is to ride out to Uffington via Denchworth, Charney Bassett, Hatford, Shellingford, and Fernham. We'll then return via Baulking, Goosey, and Denchworth. It might be further than the usual 1* ride, but it's nice and flat, and we won't tear round it at high speed. So if you've been contemplating trying a 2* ride, then come along! |
||
Riders:Andy BelcherAndy Pixton Carin Tranter Dave Cox Kerry Tucker Maurice Bawden Sarah Dore Val Smith Riders = 8 Weather:Report:The warmest Tuesday evening of the year so far, saw a surprisingly low turnout. And we didn't manage to entice any 1* riders to try out a 2*. This didn't prevent the eight of us who did ride last week's course, more sedately and in the opposite direction, from enjoying a pleasant steady circuit in the vale.With the wind in our faces on the way out to Uffington we held to the base 2* pace easily. On the return, with the wind at our backs, we were at times nudging the other end of the scale. Thanks to all the sociable souls who came along, and particularly to Andy B for sweeping. | ||

We welcomed some new Tuesday evening 3* riders: Sara, Charlotte and John. It soon became clear that all were natural 3* riders .We bowled along to Uffington, made light work of the hill out of Fernham and swept through Faringdon town centre, a slight stringing out as we recrossed the a420 before ticking Charney off the list. Regular riders,Frank!,I m sure you`ve noticed this is a lower end ride. Our aim will be to get in a good pace but we will ride thinking of the group. For any 3* riders who are undecided, if we got Paul Jarvis round last week,, we can get you round! |

Riders:Andy CowanDavid Smith Jonty Ward Karen Froud Ken Pelton Nick Stokell Phil Ward Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A good one on a beautiful evening tonight apart from my misjudgement as to how busy Oxford would be; well I have only worked there for 20 years!Apart from that a low end flat ride proved a good idea with our first lady rider this year and our first father and son team with young Jonty doing a great job, proving there is no reason to stop him or Karen becoming regulars. I am sure he did his old man proud, well done. We concentrated on our communications as a group well to make sure everyone was happy with the pace which seemed nice and relaxed into the city, where we just hit traffic. Nice as it can be to get the city buzz it did bring progress to a bit of a halt but we were soon on our way up Cumnor and pushing it to the Harley turn. The pace stayed nice and steady until adios to Phil and Jonty in Hanney leaving the rest of us to push home through Denchworth. I did have my garmin off through Oxford but 33 miles at 18.9 seemed just right. Thanks everyone for contributing to a stress free happy ride . | ||

Riders:Alvaro ReyBrian Hipwell Edith Hipwell Lorna Swanton Steve Swanton Vyvyan Hazell Riders = 6 Weather:Report:At last a sunny Tuesday evening after the unsettled and windy weather of May. Good to see Alvaro and Vyv out for their first Tuesday rides of the season.This was a very mellow ride, with plenty of time taken to enjoy the sights of summer and the countryside around us. We admired the roses in Denchworth, relaxed on the picturesque village green in Charney Bassett and gazed into the river Ock from the Ock Bridge. At West Hanney, Brian and Edith decided they would prefer the road and so just 4 of us tackled the track. We found this to be rather less smooth than when Lorna and I last rode it in May, including a new short section of hardcore, which 3 of us decided to walk. We rested at the brow of the track to take in the views all around - I still find this a magical place with the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere (yet so close to Grove). However, the evening was cooling off and it was time to get home. We were back in Grove just before the 2* and 3* groups. Thanks to all for your company on a thoroughly enjoyable evening. | ||

Easy Saturday afternoon ride from Grove | 1* |

Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Monthly 16-32km (10-20 miles) family and social afternoon rides, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs.A repeat of last year's ride to Duxford, the lowest ford on the Thames, but hopefully without the thunderstorm! We'll be heading north (through Longworth and Hinton Waldrist) to Duxford, where we'll stop for a paddle. There is a short climb back into the Vale after visiting the ford, but this is on a very quiet road (cul de sac) which everyone can take at their own pace. We'll stop for a picnic tea on the green by the church in Hinton Waldrist. Please bring something to sit on and refreshments. Round trip of about 20 miles. |

Summer Solstice Ride | 3* |

Leader:Katherine Boyce |
Start Time:3:45 am |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:Long ride from Wantage to see the sunrise on the longest day of the year.A classic bit of Wantage CTC teamwork. Leader down (hope the arm heals quickly Des) a new plan needed, phone lines humming and new plan hatched. We'll get to Hackpen summit in time to see the sun rise before going on to Chisledon for a coffee stop at the 24hr service station that has Costa. Then it's on to Avebury to see if there's any interesting sights remaining after the solstice. If our timing is right we'll make the Tutti Pole cafe in Hungerford for 9am with their legendary full English breakfasts. Then a final hill back up to the ridgeway and home. You'll obviously need lights for the first part of the ride and food to keep you going until breakfast. The ride is about 120km with a fair few climbs. But these will be done at a reasonable pace. With these hills the overall pace is likely to be at the low end of 3*. Please check the website Saturday night because if it's going to be wet Sunday morning I'll cancel the ride - we won't be able to see the sunrise 😀 |

Riders:Andy PixtonChris Rolls Chris Walters John Tranter Katherine Boyce Louis Hall Nick Stokell Phil Ward Riders = 8 Weather:Report:7 of us gathered in the Market Place ready for a 3.45am start. Not sure who was the most bemused: us or those leaving the late night drinking spots of Wantage!A quick trip to the Ridgeway via Hackpen and we were waiting for sunrise before 4.30. It was amazingly busy - not with Solstice waiters but an organised 52 mile Ridgeway walk that had started on Saturday afternoon and was finishing at Barbury Castle. We spotted Chris W's lights coming up from Great Shefford and we all hung around until 4.50 to make absolutely sure that we were not going to get any glimpse of the sun rising, despite a late break in the clouds . Our spirits undampened by the lack of sun, we ventured on through the peace and quite of the early Sunday morning, with the dawn chorus generally being the loudest sounds to be heard. Through Lambourn, Ashbury, Fox Hill, we seemed to arrive quickly at our coffee stop. Who knew that a 24 hour garage on the outskirts of Swindon could produce such good coffee at 6am! A bit of a climb out of Wroughton and into what was for a few of us new territory. We knew we were approaching Avebury because all the laybys were shut and the no parking cones stretched way out of the village. With quite a few strange folk wandering through the village and the Stones packed with solstice revellers we barely paused. A few hairy moments with pedestrians jumping out of hedges and car drivers attempting to overtake on blind bends and we were well into the Marlborough Downs. A stop to allow legs to decramp and those off the front were left wondering where most of us were. Reunited we arrived at Pewsey for an interesting set of paths through and out. Onwards to more familiar territory and Hungerford for breakfast. Most of us had full English in various sizes and managed to cause great confusion with who was having what. With the stop taking longer than expected, a few were starting to run out of time. We said goodbye to Chris W before we reached Great Shefford and Nick and Louis as we started to leave the A338 towards Chain Hill. And then a wonderful swooping decent into Wantage, a cut through to the Market Place and the ride was finished. Over 120km completed before lunch. We saw 3 Wiltshire White Horses and crossed the Ridgeway at least 4 times. A great bunch of riders. In no way could I be said to the be the leader. Everyone took a turn on the front and Chris W had devised a great route that we all really enjoyed. Pictures courtesy of John Tranter can be seen on his facebook page. | ||

We stop regularly to catch our breath, to take in the views and anything that takes our interest along the way. |
