Traffic conditions were nice & light which is always a bonus though we did experience a tuff head wind for part of the ride. It was really nice to see so many fellow cyclists enjoying the good weather. All riders enjoyed a refreshment stop at Carpenters Canteen where we were served excellent coffee & some very tasty freshly baked cakes. The service was excellent & couldn’t fault them at all. We arrived back in Grove for around 01:10pm. All riders managed an average speed of 25kph. Chapeau!!A lovely group to lead & to spend a morning with. Hopefully see you all on another ride very soon. | ||

Report:The weather was thankfully not as forecast and whilst it looked rather wet over the downs by the time we hit Letcombe Regis the skies had cleared and the rain had passed. We took a leisurely ride to the top of Hackpen Hill and then enjoyed the descent into Lambourn. As we turned right to the seven Barrows the wind was behind us as we climbed again to the ridgeway above the Blowing Stone. It was then a glorious down hill to the spring line and a flat ride with a tail wind home and to parsons for a well erned coffe and cake.Thanks for the company! | ||

Off Road Tuesday Evening Ride | 2* |

Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres required and good lights when it gets dark (‘get you home’ lights in Spring/Autumn). We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if we decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:The trails remain in great shape and we headed south - up at Letcombe & Segsbury Hill, all the way south to Fawley*. Then rotating east to Farnborough* (a few nettles on this leg!) and down to Lands End*. Up 'Ice Valley' and down Goddards Brook, which is nice and grippy as long as you are cautious of a few crab apples.A pint or two at the Nelson afterwards to reminisce on this and other rides and plan future ones. * All these have more distant namesakes, but I've only taken my bike to the other Lands End. The others are more appropriate for oil tankers and aircraft. | ||

Report:We set off from OMH. The weather was quite good but the wind got up later in the day. We went to Stanford via Children, Westcot, Kingston Lyle, Baulking Green and onto Stanford. John took some photos of the bad cracks in the road on the road between Kingston Lyle and Baulking Green which have grown worse this summer - be careful as bike tyres will fit in the cracks easily. Coffee was up to the normal good standard. We set off for home via Gainfield crossroads Charney and Denchworth. No problems other than the leader having a bad day! Nice, easy pace through Charney Bassett, Appleton and Cumnor, down the hill to Botley. Then the cunning car-free entry to Oxford via bike tracks and beautiful river sides (suitable for all bikes). After a short sightseeing loop, we take the river path to Iffley, Kennington and back via Sunningwell and Fyfield. Coffee and cake stop at the new Proof Social Bakehouse in Kennington. 40 miles - a longer 2* ride, but easy terrain and an easy pace. Don't miss this one! |

Report:A perfect autumnal morning, glorious sunshine, not much wind - basically perfect conditions for a ride to Oxford. A good group kept together well and all went according to plan. The Proof Social Bakehouse is unusually located on an industrial estate but served great coffee and cakes.Particularly nice to be down on the river watching newly arrived students being put through their paces by the College rowing coaches. Report:Starting to get properly cold, with a recorded temperature of 2C in the appropriately nicknamed 'Ice Valley' and that might be because we didn't hang around long enough for the thermometer in the Garmin to adjust.We did hang around to take some moonlit photos though, with Jupiter making a guest appearance. Our route took up up Lark Hill, down Ice Valley, 80% of the way up the other side before turning left and coming down into West Illsley, then climbing back up the Ridgeway, heading west and riding down at Ginge. Monthly Saturday 1* - Morning Ride to Childrey | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:10:00 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:Please note the change of start time to 10am to allow us to visit Cantorist Farm at Childrey for our refreshment stop,Aiming to catch some autumn colours and expansive views, this will be a ride of two halves, a relatively flat loop around the Vale with the option of a short-cut back to Grove, followed by a more undulating section to Childrey, returning via Wantage. For a change, we'll cycle out to West Hanney using the byway over the railway line and the farm track past the Bradfield Grove grain store. Though pot-holed and stony in places, the tracks have remained dry and give a nice alternative off-road route northwards from Grove. From West Hanney we'll loop round to the villages of Lyford, Charney Bassett and Denchworth. From Denchworth there is the option for a short-cut back to Grove for those that would like the opportunity of a shorter, flatter ride (total distance 11 miles). From Denchworth we'll turn south to cross the railway line over the Circourt Road bridge (with a great view of the Downs). We'll have one short section along the A417 before turning right to West Challow then climb gently to Childrey using a tarmacked bridleway before our refreshment stop. After the break, we'll head back towards Wantage using the partly paved bridleway (with a short potholed section) to East Challow, which gives lovely sweeping views across the Vale. After a short ascent through East Challow, our reward will be a nice long descent into Wantage. We'll turn off at Ham Road and return to Grove along the Denchworth Road making use of the new cyclepath some of the way. Total distance about 16.5 miles, expect to be back in Grove by 12:30. To help gauge numbers, please let me know by text if you plan to come. Monthly 16-32km (10-20miles) family and social afternoon rides on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a tea stop, at a riding pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph). Occasional short or gentle climbs. |
||
Riders:Carin TranterDiana Whidborne Edmund Richards Emily Richards John Tranter Lorna Swanton Patrick O'Leary Roger Postbeschild Steve Swanton Riders = 9 Weather:Report:This was definitely a ride of two halves - a gentle family ride as far as Denchworth and then a 2* ride pace for the more undulating second half. The autumn colours were superb! Lovely to see Edmund and Emily again on their first Saturday outing.We started in bright sunshine but with a strong south-westerly breeze. Despite recent rain, the Cow Lane track was not muddy or greasy and made for a nice alternative escape route from Grove. We stopped for a picture on the farm track to West Hanney, which was lined by glorious maples. The going was easy until we turned towards Lyford into the breeze and then, as the sky clouded over, a few spots of rain. After stopping to don jackets it quickly stopped (of course); the sun soon returned and stayed with us for the rest of the ride. After Charney Bassett, we continued on towards Goosey, still with a nagging headwind, and it came as great relief to turn towards Denchworth with the wind now behind us. John took his leave at this point and at Denchworth Emily and Edmund decided to head back to Grove too, with Roger kindly volunteering to escort them back. The remaining 5 of us then continued as planned on to Childrey, where we enjoyed an excellent early lunch at Cantorist Farm. The Afghan eggs are recommended! We last stopped here on the churches ride and as on that day we made a short detour to St Mary's church, which, delightfully, was open. Once awheel again, we returned to Wantage via the bridleway to East Challow, stopping mid-way to take in the view, and then enjoyed the long descent on Ickleton Road. We returned to Grove via Denchworth Road trying out the new cyclepath alongside the sports fields. Unfortunately, the crossing point by the plane-off-the-stick roundabout at the end of Mably Way leaves a lot to be desired.... Thanks all for your company on a very mellow morning ride. Well done to Edmund and Emily on completing their longest ride so far in the blustery conditions and thanks to John and Roger for sweeping. | ||

Description:RIDE CANCELLED - Sorry - forecast of heavy rain and thunderstorms. - This is a very special opportunity to use tracks, riverside paths and quiet streets to do a 13 mile 'urban safari' around the south and centre of Oxford. This ride really gives a remarkable insight into some hidden corners of this complex city and is mostly traffic free. This is an away-day ride, run at a beginner 1* pace. Parking is in the Redbridge Park and Ride at the southern end of the Abingdon Road (bring 2 pounds in coins or pay by card). Note there is a 2m height restriction on the entrance so let me know in advance if you have bikes on a roof rack for further instructions.We head north through the strange sliver of a suburb known as Grandpont, cross the river on the fascinating Gasworks bridge and then head into the centre of town. A mini-tour of Jericho is followed by the chance to get the insider gossip as we pass through the epicentre of Oxford, under Hertford College's Bridge of Sighs. We then ride down to the river at Folly Bridge where we head along the towpath past the College boathouses, pop up into the lovely Iffley village and Rose Hill and drop back to the river to Sandford, hopefully in time for coffee and cake at the Proof Social Bakehouse We then have a couple of miles back through Kennington before some unexpected underpasses get us back to the start. I'm really pleased with this one - don't miss it! Please let me know in advance if you are joining the ride. 13 miles at a leisurely pace - 10 or 11 mph. |

Off Road Tuesday Evening Ride | 2* |
---|
Leader:Robin Tucker |
Start Time:6:30 pm |
Start Location:WMP |
Description:As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. Off-road ride around local tracks, usually about 15 miles. Knobbly tyres required and good lights when it gets dark (‘get you home’ lights in Spring/Autumn). We are keen to welcome new riders and can make recommendations or have spare lights to borrow if you let me know. Dark, cold and wet - we’ll ride in any two. But please let me know if you are coming so I can tell you if we decide to cancel due to really bad weather. |
||
Report:Another ride with damp trails but dry skies. The trails are mostly fine with a number of puddles to avoid/splash through as you wish. We went up at Letcombe Regis - Castle Hill through Segsbury Castle (hill fort) then east with a couple of 'down and ups', finally descending at Ginge.Willem, late out of work, gets an honorary mention on this ride. He wasn't in time, but through the power of modern technology spent the evening trying to catch up with us, and almost, but not quite making it! | ||

Riders:Carin TranterDiana Whidborne John Tranter Kevin Hazell Patrick O'Leary Susan Holdroyd Tim Waite Riders = 7 Weather:Report:A very good ride out to Woolstone’s pub The White Horse. We had 7 riders and the weather was very much more pleasant than forecast - some of us even felt a bit overdressed on the ride home!The pub provided coffee/tea, cold drinks and yummy chocolate cake. We went out via Denchworth, Goosey and Baulking. We turned right after Baulking village, over the railway bridge and down into Uffington. From Uffington we cycled out to Woolstone, taking the second left turn into the village and the pub. We were meeting the 2* group there and they were there a couple of minutes before us. After refreshments we took the other way out of Woolstone and returned to Uffington. We rode through the village and back on the road past Baulking again and back to Grove via Goosey and Denchworth. A good fun ride! | ||

Riders:Barry EggbyChris Marchant David Bridge Des Higgs Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Steve Swanton Terry Ryland Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Another warm late October day greeted 8 riders. We set off on a longer loop to The White Horse at Woolstone at a determined lick into the wind. Determined, that was, to get to coffee before the 1 star group as the pub had warned us of a slow coffee machine!We were all suitably supplied and slabs of chocolate gateau were provided to those of us still fortunate enough to be allowed such delights! The warm weather caused arm warmers to be discarded for the return trip and the tail wind made this a pleasant easy ride. Coffees and lunch were enjoyed by a few at Munchies on our return. | ||

Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:9:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:As a courtesy to the ride leader, we ask that you pre-book for this ride. All-day touring ride (80-100km / 50-65 miles), lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders. Climbing almost inevitable. This is a pre-bookable ride. To book a place, text your name to the ride leader no earlier than 9:00am on the Sunday before the ride. You will receive confirmation or be advised that the ride is fully booked. A reserve list will be maintained.I am keen to try out a new route - over to Botley, a favourite cut-through to Port Meadow and then up the Oxford Canal on a newly improved towpath surface to Yarnton, followed by a traffic-free lane to Eynsham via Cassington. From there we take the lovely road to Witney via South Leigh - lunch stop at Cogges Farm. We then head for Aston and Faringdon before heading home across the Vale. 60 miles / 96km. |
||
Report:We were blessed with some amazing weather - not expecting to be in shorts at the end of October! It was also a great group which stayed together well. I was pleased with this route - particularly liked the stretch along the Oxford Canal north of Wolvercote. It is a really interesting little corner of the countryside as the canal, the railway and various major trunk routes like the A40 weave across each other. We enjoyed watching a couple in a canal boat navigate a slightly dodgy swing bridge (see photo).Lunch at Cogges Farm was really good and we decided to head for home without a second stop (despite passing tempting cafe options in Aston, Bampton, Clanfield and Faringdon). Thanks to all for a really fun day out. | ||

Riders:Barry StantonDavid Jackson Des Higgs Gerry Jones Jenny Gower John Tranter Karl Blake Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Terry Penn Riders = 10 Report:A mild morning if a little cloudier than forecast! Lovely to have 10 riders out on a Sunday morning, the competition for top slots on the leader board is hotting up! We headed out to Hanney via Denchworth as planned, stopping to put waterproofs on in Debchworth We then rode on to Charney Bassett, by which time the rain had stopped and waterproofs had to be removed. On through Goosey and to the A417 for a short stint before turning right to Childrey. Unfortunately Karl had a puncture as we turned onto the A 417 and he and terry were held up. The rest of us waited for them and after a short delay we decided to break for coffee at Childrey. After a welcome coffee and cake we then prepared for the hill of the day, sadly Karl had another puncture and opted to hang back and make his own way back with Des. The rest of the group continued on through the Letcombes with Terry flying at the front, making the most of the descent into Letcombe Bassett. The sun came out as we made our way home through Wantage and back to Grove where some of us stopped in Parsons for further refreshments and met up with Karl and Des.A lovely mornings ride with great company, thanks to all and to Terry and Des for supporting Karl in his hour of need. | ||
