Oxford Special May Day ride | 3* |
---|
Leader:John Tranter |
Start Time:5:30 am |
Start Location:OMH |
Description:This year May Day falls on a Wednesday, but this doesn't stop the ancient Oxford tradition of the choir singing at sunrise from the tower of Magdalen College. So I am repeating our now traditional slightly bonkers May Day sunrise ride to Oxford and back, hoping that some may still be able to join a midweek version. The bad news is - it starts at 5.30. The good news is this means we can catch the wonderful early morning light on the river and the ancient buildings of Oxford, as well as hopefully getting at least some sense of the occasion. I can't guarantee that we will be able to get anywhere near the Magdalen tower - I suspect the whole city will be going crazy - but it should be an adventure! We head out to Fyfield, under the Tubney tunnel and across to Sunningwell before joining the river by Kennington for a lovely route into town past the College boathouses with views across Christ Church Meadow. Then we will take a look at some of the best buildings Oxford has to offer (including my own St Cross College) before heading out of town along the Oxford Canal to Wolvercote for a big loop around Port Meadow. Finally we conquer Cumnor Hill and head for home. It is just over 40 miles and my plan is to be back in Grove by around 9.30-10. Costa in Grove will be open for post-ride refreshments and facilities. Please let me know in advance if you are joining the ride. |

Riders:Barry StantonJohn Tranter Katherine Boyce Paul Smith Sharon Bedford Simon Wysocki-Jones Riders = 6 Weather:Report:Always amazing that people are willing to get up so early for this slightly wacky ride. Pretty decent weather for this one, although a little cloudy at first so we didn't get to see the sun rise. However we had some moody mist on the river and it got sunnier as the ride went on. We were in time to see the general mayhem around town following the traditional May Day singing from the tower of Magdalen College - morris dancers and green men were much in evidence and we had a chat with a lady with a hunting horn on her way from one church tower to another to blow in the day! Great to bump into Lizzie H as we stopped off at St Cross College before heading up the canal towpath to Port Meadow, conquering Cumnor Hill and heading for home. This was the first midweek version of this ride and we certainly saw a lot more rat running traffic on the lanes. Another lesson is that the cafes were open so next time we will build in a coffee stop. Having said that, Costa in Grove was great for this occasion! Thanks to all for great company and a great ride. | ||

Riders:Andy PixtonBarry Stanton David Jackson Des Higgs Karl Blake Louise Bowers Roger Postbeschild Stephanie Haddrell Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Well, blow me, finally, a spring day that felt like spring! We went via Appleton and Cumnor, up through Old Boar's Hill - passing the usual viewpoint of the Dreaming Spires, and down Bayworth Hill. This is rough at the top, demanding caution but has been surfaced further down. We negotiated Radley Lakes and the riverside route into Abingdon, without having to resort to poking out mud from frames! Abingdon market square was like a continental venue, full of people sat in the sunshine, enjoying coffee from the many cafés around the square. Java Café was well up to the mark. We returned home via the river road and Peep-O-Day Lane, suffering the appalling resurfacing work done through Steventon and the Hanney road. Thanks to Des and Karl for sweeping, a great group and the weather! | ||

Riders:Andy PixtonJan McCabe Jo Little John Tranter Katherine Boyce Richard Kidd Sharon Bedford Yvonne Bird Riders = 8 Report:It is surprising how starting just a little way from Wantage opens the possibilities to visit areas we don't get to very often. I think we all enjoyed cycling somewhere different and were impressed by the great scenery. We made good progress to Chipping Norton - so decided to push on to Cafe de la Post at Chadlington for our first stop. Being a bank holiday Monday the weather forecast was for rain - and we did wonder how soggy we might get. We considered ourselves lucky therefore not to get rain until after our second stop at Aston Pottery. Unfortunately there was then a heavy downpour so we all got somewhat damp. Although it would have been better to stay dry we agreed it didn't distract from what was a lovely day's ride. Thanks to everyone for being a great group. | ||

3* New Forest Weekend | 3* |
---|
Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Lyndhurst |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leader. Riding pace of 12-14mph. There will be hills. This is day 1 of a two day visit to the New Forest. We are making it a weekend away and are staying in Lyndhurst from Friday to Sunday. We usually all meet up Friday evening for a meal at La Pergola, which is close to the ride starting point. It would be possible, however, to travel down early on Saturday and just treat it as a day ride. The ride starts in Lyndhurst and visits Lepe and Beaulieau then skirts past Brockenhurst and along the ornamental drives then loops back round past Cadnum to Lyndhurst. The ride covers a good variety of the beautiful New Forest countryside. Please note the New Forest is not flat! Although there are no really steep hills, there will be continuous climbing throughout the day. We will have a cafe stop in Beaulieu at The Old Bakehouse Tea Rooms and then a lunch stop at The Royal Oak in Fritham. We can then all meet up for an evening meal in Lyndhurst at La Pergola, an Italian restaurant near the starting place, which we will book beforehand. The starting place for both days is the Bolton's Bench car park on the B3056 Lyndhurst to Beaulieu road. When approaching from Lyndhurst village (on the A35 Southampton Road) the B3056 is on the right hand side, opposite the fire station. The car park is immediately on the left. La Pergola is on the A35 just a bit further on, on the left hand side. It has a large car park. Lyndhurst has several small hotels, including the Ormonde House Hotel and The Penny Farthing. There are also some B&B's. We have booked The Ormonde House Hotel for when we stay in May, and can highly recommend it as they are very friendly and helpful, but the area is popular so it would be best to book quickly. I am limiting both days to 12 riders, as any more is too much on these roads and will split into 2 groups for ease of riding. Please contact me if you would like to put your name down. I have set up a Whatsapp group to help co-ordinate everything . I have contact details for nearly everyone but please could you ensure you have downloaded Whatsapp onto your phone. |

Riders:Barry StantonChris Gray Eddie Little Jan McCabe Jo Little John Tranter Joy Arthur Peter Brodie Sharon Bedford Yvonne Bird Riders = 10 Weather:Report:We were lucky enough to have amazing weather - warm, sunny and only a light breeze to help cool us down. The forest was as beautiful as ever - with bluebells, rhododendrons and gorse all in flower. The first part of the day, down to Lepe, wasn't too busy and its always lovely to see the sea. We then had a welcome cafe stop in Beaulieu. Ed left us there as he didn't want to push himself too hard with another ride tomorrow. We enjoyed the Rhinefield ornamental drive and coped with the Bolderwood climb before a welcome lunch break at Fritham. It was then only a few miles back to Lyndhurst, where our good luck deserted us as there was no ice cream van. Thanks to John for leading a second group when it was needed and to Yvonne for taking the headwind for me on a section when I began to flag. Finally, congratulations to Chris for not only doing his first 3* ride since his accident but also his longest one for quite a while. Great to meet Sarah as well. Leader:Jo Little |
Start Time:9:00 am |
Start Location:Lyndhurst |
Description:Please pre-book for this ride by contacting the ride leaderDay 2 of the New Forest weekend. Once we have breakfasted we will meet up for a half day ride, again starting at Bolton's Bench car park in Lyndhurst. This time we'll approach Beaulieu from a different direction and then are changing last year's route by heading a bit further south before a long loop towards the cafe stop at Burley. We then follow the same route as last year with another chance to climb the Bolderwood Ornamental drive before then returning to Lyndhurst. The ride should finish about 12.30pm, allowing plenty of time to return home before the rush hour (hopefully!). Today's ride is lumpier than yesterdays - again the Bolderwood climb is the biggest one but it is a fairly constant up and down for much of the ride. 34 miles |

Riders:Chris GrayEddie Little Jan McCabe Jo Little Joy Arthur Nicole Pethybridge Peter Brodie Yvonne Bird Riders = 8 Weather:Report:Another warm, sunny day meant great cycling conditions. We headed for Beaulieu before taking a different route through small hamlets and little lanes. This led onto the heath where Peter had a puncture. Luckily he is tubeless so it self-sealed and then Joy was able to use her stabby thing and a slug to fix it (technical terms!)The cafe stop at Burley was great as always and we then tackled Bolderwood hill again. I have promised to look at the route for next year and try to avoid this! We again hoped for the ice cream van at Lyndhurst but were disappointed. Thank you to Jan who led a second group whenever the traffic built up. Finally, thank you very much to everyone for being such great company over the weekend. We left Grove with nice weather (although when the sun went in it got quite chilly quickly, but no rain). We went via Denchworth, Goosey, Baulking and Uffington to Shrivenham for a good stop at Bloomfield's where we sat outside (a first time for John and Terry and a repeat from yesterday for David). I then took the ride down the High Street in Watchfield where John reckoned he had never been before. On the return journey we kept up a good pace via Longcot, Shellingford, Hatford, Charney and Denchworth back to Grove.A good ride all round! | ||

1* Saturday Half-Day Ride to Uffington | 1* |
---|
Leader:Steve Swanton |
Start Time:2:00 pm |
Start Location:Wantage Parish Church |
Description:A special themed ride to Uffington to mark the 40th Anniversary on Sunday of the death of the former Poet Laureate and Wantage resident, Sir John Betjeman. As well as living in Wantage (1951-72), the Betjeman's first family home was in Uffington before the war, making the perfect destination for a relaxed themed ride. For a change we will meet outside the parish church in Wantage and pay our respect to Sir John, whose bust stands opposite, outside the museum. We will ride out to Uffington through the springline villages, take refreshments at the Fox & Hounds PH, check out a blue plaque, then return through the vale, finishing by the Betjeman Memorial Park in Wantage. A round trip of just over 18 miles taken at relaxed pace. There may be a few verses along the way too. Our regular social and family ride on the third Saturday of the month, usually with a cafe stop. We cover 16-32km (10-20 miles) at a leisurely pace of 13-16km/h (8-10mph), tackling the occasional hill (nothing too long) and easy off-road track (conditions permitting). Please let the ride leader know if you are planning to come. |

Riders:Alan FisherAngie Fisher Anke Otto Carin Tranter Lorna Swanton Louise Bowers Patrick O'Leary Steve Swanton Riders = 8 Weather:Report:A thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing ride on what turned out to be a lovely sunny afternoon. And personally, it was great to be out on the bike again after the tumble last week.We shifted the start slightly to meet beneath Betjeman's bust outside the museum. With the parish church behind us, it seemed most apt to read his poem Wantage Bells before we set off. We had a quick photo call at the top of Betjeman Lane and then continued to Locks Lane where we stopped beyond the brook to peer up to the Mead, the Betjemans' family home from 1951-72. And before we set off on the ride in earnest there was time for a few verses from On Leaving Wantage, 1972. Anke joined us at East Challow and we continued on through the Springline villages as far as Kingston Lisle before dropping down to Uffington via Fawler Hill. We stopped opposite the church in Uffington, where Betjeman was sometime warden in the 30s to hear the rather maudlin poem Uffington. We circled the village pausing by Garrard's Farmhouse, with its blue plaque, where the Betjemans' lived before the war, then stopped for refreshments at the Fox and Hounds. It was lovely sitting in the garden in the sunshine where a few more verses were shared. Nice also to meet a group of women riders from Winchester CTC on a weekend away in Oxfordshire. Our ride back across the Vale was through fields of buttercups between verges brimming with cow parsley but otherwise was uneventful. Carin and Louise went their separate ways once we reached Grove, but not until Betjeman had had The Last Laugh. The rest of us continued into Wantage to finish at the Betjeman Memorial Park. It was such a lovely evening, everyone was happy to linger and enjoy the park for a while before we went our own ways. Thanks all for your company on what was a memorable memorial ride and a joy to lead. | ||

Monthly 80-100km (50-65 miles) all-day touring ride, lunch and possibly tea stop en route, at a riding pace of 18-22km/h (11-14mph). Not suitable for irregular riders.Moved to a Saturday so not to clash with the flexicare walk which is popular with club members, (especially 3* ride leaders). Change to earlier published route - so not quite so hilly. Out to Carterton taking a meandering route on the way out and a direct route back. First stop at Coleshill. Second stop Lynwood in Bampton (with Aston Pottery as a back up if too busy). Please note 9am start from Beacon |
||
Report:Just a select 4 today and as we are all ride leaders we took the front at different times. Thanks to all for being such a great group. We had a glorious warm and (mostly) sunny ride out to Carterton and back. Route generally worked well - with quiet roads and great views. A consolation for all the wet weather earlier in the year is that everything is looking very green with an abundance of wildflowers. It was busy however around Lechlade and between Brize Norton and Bampton. Unfortunately we met too different drivers who shouted "unpleasantries" at us - but whilst we were annoyed we were determined not to let it spoil our day out. Cafe stops worked well and I am still licking my lips from the cinnamon bun at Blakes. Well done to Chris for completing his first 100k for some time. Great to see you back riding so strongly. | ||

Also good to see Nick Portsmouth out on his first 2* of the season and to be joined by new rider Peter Dalgleish. We headed out on the planned route to Fernham via Goosey and baulking enjoying the sun and a tail wind. We then went into Little Coxwell before crossing the A420 which was as one would expect for a bank holiday weekend crazy. As we made our way to great Coxwell I considered our options and given how busy Lechlade was going to be decide to put plan B into operation, stopping at Coleshill and avoiding Lechlade. All was good, we divided into 3's to go down the hill to allow cars to pass, it was however rather unfortunate that Anke and Peter being unfamiliar with the cafe stop overshot the turn, my appologies to them both. We did however have a lovely stop and the cinnamon buns and coffee were amazing. After coffee we made our way to Buscot and then after a brief stretch on the Lechlade road went onto Radcot, and home via Littleworth, Hatford, Charney Bassett and Denchworth. Description:I think this is the first off-road Sunday ride of the season, so I've chosen a route which is both fun and adaptable (i.e. we can cut it short if necessary). It's 20 miles but with plenty of rolling trails which shouldn't yet be too covered in nettles, although it will probably be muddy thanks to all the rain. I'd be grateful if you could let me know if you intend to ride (my phone is actually 07875 456521) but there are no limits to participants. We should be back in Wantage in time for lunch. |

Great then that Eliane's was open to revive us with drinks and excellent cakes, (service also fast and efficient). There were a few spots of rain around Weston, (just as Karen left us having front loaded the ride by cycling to the start), but otherwise it was dry with a reasonable amount of sunshine - so not bad for a Bank Holiday Monday! | ||

Report:Interesting……VERY wet!!Originally going to be 5 of us, but 2 opted to join the 2* bridging ride, so decision taken for us all to "join" this. Divided into three groups with 4 of us at the back. Due a couple of minor delays, we realised that we were not going to catch the other groups. Then the rain came....... Oh YES! Therefore, we took decision to abandon pursuit of the others and revert to our 1* route...... Rain was getting more intense as be approached and went past Charney Bassett..... all feeling wetter & wetter as the water steadily soaked us through.... Can we get any wetter??? NO! Got to Gainfield and just decided to just turn round - thus avoiding the main roads and any battle with traffic and puddles!! Retraced our watery tracks to Denchworth, where Di (who had planned to do the bridging ride but had ended up with the one star by the unfolding of events!) returned to Grove while the 3 of us descended on the pub for food, drink (and less water!). Met some of the 2*group, a "lone" 3 star rider - and the 2 "off roaders" who were very muddy(!). The rest - no doubt soaked - had all headed home.... Lovely meal and we were rewarded with no more rain back to Grove. ***Due to the effort involved - and that we did the same distance as the 2*, have rebranded this as a 2* ride. Despite the weather - looking back it was "fun". Thanks for all your company - it will be drier next time....(!) | ||
